Just her luck really...to be paired up with this dimglow of a 'candidate' for this chore...it wasn't even that difficult of a chore, I mean she'd given herself the harder part, the actual calculating, all the hold brat had to do was shift things outside once they were counted so they wouldn't get confused....but she couldn't even do that right.
Seriously sometimes Anya wondered how people in holds ever got anything done, brainless as they seemed to be and running a hand (carefully) through her - as always - beautifully done up hair she huffed in irritation. "You can't lay them out like that you numbweed, you'll block the path" She told the other girl with a roll of her eyes to express just how stupid she thought the need to explain that really was. She was being so very patient with this girl but honestly!
Mercy for her part was getting rather tired of Anya's kindly voiced but completely obvious insults and eyed the sacks and crates...they looked just fine to her and while she was trying to stay cheerful - chores went by so much smoother with a good mindset - it was getting difficult when she was sweating like a herdbeast staggering about carrying heavy sacks while Anya merely posed and tisked and made notes remaining completely mess free while tossing out insults and clearly thinking she was pulling her own weight "There's plenty of room for people to get by" She stated with a sigh before plastering a cheerful look on her face..."But I guess if you want me to move them...again.."

Having got up extra early in order to complete her chores before lessons, then attended said lessons and eaten lunch, Kleos was strolling towards the Weyr's exit with a free afternoon ahead of her, and her flying straps slung over one shoulder. It was a good thing too; the stress of the decision her partner would soon be making weighed heavily on her, so a chance to kick back and relax with her beloved was exactly what she needed...
Her progress was suddenly impeded, however, by a pair of candidates and a lot of crates and sacks. The young rider had just started to scowl when she noticed that both offending parties were rather pretty young ladies. One of them, the darker-haired, she was sure she remembered from her candidacy, but she wasn't so certain about the girl with vaguely ruddy brown hair. Well, either way, it would be rude of her to just move on without offering assistance.
"Good afternoon to you ladies," she said with a smile and a slight bow that made her weyrling rank knots swing gently. "I hope you will pardon my intrusion," she went on, "but it seems to me as though you could use a little assistance."
"Mine," Moriath addressed her rider in a faintly reproachful tone of voice, "I thought we were to go flying. They are females, I am sure they will manage whatever it is they are doing."
"We will my love," Kleos assured her lifemate, "and I am certain they could, eventually, but it seems as though the task is heavy going. They aren't as strong as me, it's only right I should help them."
"Oh, very well," the large crimson sighed, "I can wait a little while, the sun is pleasant."
Kleos smiled slightly, and gave a slighter nod. "Thank you my dear, I appreciate it." She would not have liked being forced to pass up the opportunity to help this pair of pretty ladies out in the least!

Anya's eyes narrowed slightly and she was about to give Mercy a suitable response when they were interrupted. Anya only took a quick glance - long enough to notice the start of a scowl on the other girls face before turning back to Mercy and motioning to Kelo's "There you see...you've blocked the path, just as I said you would" She harped at Mercy "If you had just done it like I told you too we would have been done by now" She added in a smug tone before turning back to the latest arrival, intending to further teach Mercy a lesson by apologizing to Kleos for the other girls terrible lack of sense.
But then she got a better look at the girl, Anya put a good deal of effort into knowing who was who in the Weyr, if not personally then at least by the most important feature to her mind - weather they were hold or Weyr born. Kleos if she recalled correctly was holdborn - but had impressed, to a crimson no less a thought which made her scowl in her own right. Imagine a crimson wasting herself on someone born outside the Weyr, Anya assumed the dragon simply hadn't had much of a choice and had 'settled' for a good match but not a great one. "Hello Rider, we're fine thanks." She stated shortly "Mercy just needs to learn she can't slack off like she did back home, Weyr standards are so much higher the holds" She stated primly before turning back to make a motion at Mercy telling her to get a move on.
Mercy winced inwardly when Kleo's approached, not because she didn't like her - she barely knew her really but did recall that she had impressed to rather pretty crimson - but because she knew Anya would be nasty about proving her point. Anya Mercy thought liked to use being 'helpful' as an excuse to boss people around. She wasn't even sure just what it was that had set the other girl off in the first place. Perhaps she was just ill tempered. While Anya was 'politely' telling the rider to take a hike Mercy offered a smile and mouthed an apologetic 'sorry' to Kleos while the others back was turned.
"I personally would love some assistance" She beamed at Kleos while rolling her eyes slightly at Anya, it would be nice she thought if the person who was supposed to be helping her actually was instead of flouncing about making tabulations and calling her part done. By the irritated look on Anya's face however Mercy doubted that her last comment had won her any points with her snappy chore partner. It was going to be a long day.

...She wasn't sure what to make of that. She didn't feel any loyalty to or love for the Hold she had come from, but the insinuation that holders were lazy still reflected upon her, and... Well, it was still where she had come from even if she had left it behind without a twinge of regret. Had Anya not been a pretty girl, Kleos probably would have yelled her between and back there and then. As she was a pretty girl however, she managed to keep hold of her temper. She was sure the candidate hadn't meant to insult her honor... At least the other one was being polite and amiable.
"Good lady, I can assure you that standards in Holds are as high as they are here," she said eventually with a slightly tight smile. "It is a very different culture to a Weyr, but it is not a slack and lazy one I assure you... In any case, if all of us work together we can have this sorted out in no time." So saying, she flashed a charming smile to Mercy - who she felt she now liked more than the other girl - and hefted two heavy sacks with relative ease. "Now then," she said as she settled them over her shoulders, "where are we moving all of this to?"
As she spoke, a small pale blue flitt popped out of between and came into land on one of her sacks with an excited cheep; what was she doing? What were the sacks? She was so lovely, oh he did love her very very much!
As the blue continued to send affection her way, Kleos chuckled fondly. "Forgive the interruption," she said with a jerk of her head towards the flitt, "this is Ice, he'll be no trouble, he just likes to be close to me."

The expression on Anya's face at Kleo's remark made it pretty clear that she thought it was a bunch of herdbeast doo and when the other girl easily picked up two sacks her head bobbed a bit as though that explained it completely - Kleo's had obviously been some sort of menial laborer in the holds. Such people were pretty dim and clearly lacked the intelligence to see just how lackluster their habits really were. Can't really blame them for such ill breeding now could she? "I can see how one might think that" Was her return comment, stated in a voice indicating she was clearly humoring her more then anything else.
Anya was going to get them both in trouble if she kept on with this temper of her's Mercy thought to herself - eventually she'd insult the wrong person and find herself on her butt. It was somewhat disappointing that the rider hadn't done so - but then again that would just be lowering themselves to her standards now wouldn't it? considering that Mercy went to butt in before Anya had a second to say anything more - which by the glint in her eye she was certainly considering doing "Well I inadvertently blocked the path I'm afraid, just need to shift them a bit so we don't trouble anyone else trying to walk by" She told Kleo's pausing suddenly as the flit appeared to admire him "He's beautiful" She told the rider truthfully and really couldn't keep all of her wistfulness from her voice. Someday she'd have a flit she told herself mentally. Someday.
Anya rolled her eyes slightly - it was probably a flit from her hold, stupid and inbred or something "it's not like you haven't see flit's before1" She snapped at Mercy "All your doing now is chattering and holding her up longer"

As the nicer girl commented on Ice, and the rude one snipped back, Kleos remained silent, trying to get a handle on her temper. Although she did not snap out right away at the humoring tones, it was clear from the light in her eyes and the tension in her jaw that she was Not Impressed. An angry bugle from the weyrbowl reinforced this, although of course the candidates had no way of being sure that it was Kleos' bondmate calling out. The sudden flash of orange in Ice's eyes, however, could not be missed.
"Allow me to give you a little advice, candidate," Kleos said through clenched teeth once she felt sure that she wouldn't just lash out and flatten the discourteous little wench. "It is unwise to speak in such tones to somebody you know nothing of, no matter what their rank may be; it speaks of poor breeding, poor manners, and low intelligence. It is especially unwise to speak in that manner to somebody who outranks you. I am not an unreasonable woman - if I were you would have felt my hand across your cheek by now - but let me assure you, if you continue to patronize me, to insult my honor, I shall see to it that the candidatemaster hears how you treat dragonriders and punishes you accordingly."
"With such a slow and rude attitude," growled Moriath t o her rider, "I would almost have thought her a male. I suppose it just goes to show that not all of our sex live up to their potential."
"Sadly," Kleos replied, her eyes still fixed upon the infuriating little wretch, "such a waste of a lovely face; a perfect redfruit, with maggots writhing in its heart." None of this, however, was the fault of the other candidate. Giving the rude girl one last contemptuous glance, Kleos turned a kinder gaze onto Mercy. "Do not trouble yourself about it," she said with a nod, moving the two sacks out of the way and setting them down before returning for a crate, "it seems that you're not getting any help with this task. It is sad to see a lack of work ethic in somebody who thinks to Impress a dragon. Perhaps she hopes that somebody else will shovel the dung and chop the meat if she does." Surely no dragon would be interested in that rude, bigoted maggot.
"A blue might be dim enough," Moriath suggested, shifting restlessly in her sunny spot, "but it would have to be a very dull blue indeed." She had often thought that a male dragon should not choose a female rider, but never before had she thought that for the sake of the male. How dare anyone insult Hers? That was an insult to them both, and it would not be borne.

Mercy decided rather quickly that the best course of action in this case was just to avert her gaze and not get involved when the rider decided to knock Anya down a peg or two - not that she wasn't grateful, dragons knew the girl deserved it - but appearing to take any sort of pleasure in it would just make her life miserable later. She still had to be around Anya from time to time and she was certain that if Anya was angered enough she'd make it her personal mission to take it out on Mercy. She just seemed the type.
And when the dragon roared - though she couldn't be sure just which dragon it was - Mercy had glanced upwards as though half expecting to see a furious beast blink into existence above them. It would be a sad ending if she got squashed because of Anya's big mouth now wouldn't it? Still she couldn't help but give a small smile at Kleo's comments as she helped moved the sacks and crates out of the way, ducking her head and picking up a crate to move herself so Anya wouldn't see it. "maybe you should check the Tally's again?" She suggested in a mild and she hoped non-confrontational voice to Anya, hoping that the other girl would take the excuse and disappear back into the room before saying something else foolish
Anya's eyes bulged slightly when Kleo's poke - thought not in worry or fear which might have been wise, but in anger and likely she would have said something in return if the rider hadn't threatened going to speak with the candidate master. How dare she assume Anya wouldn't take care of her own dragon. Just because she didn't want to move crates or thought the holds were full of lazy ignorant people? Which by the way the rider was just proving completely!
But she was thankfully smart enough to keep her mouth shut, snapping her head in Mercy's direction when the other girl spoke, was that a half hidden smile on her face? "Thats the smartest thing you've said all day" She snarled at the other candidate before stalking back into the room.
Blowing out a relieved breath as Anya left Mercy dropped her crate beside the others and gave the rider an apologetic look "Sorry about that..." Though really it wasn't her responsibility to apologize, not that Anya ever would. "Hope she hasn't wreaked your day or anything, that would just make her pleased with herself" She added with a sigh "don't know why she has such a chip on her shoulder"

"Not at all, I assure you," Kleos flashed Mercy a bright smile and shook her head as the obtuse candidate stomped off, "it would take a great deal more than one ignorant girl-brat to upset me... As to what her reasons are," the rider shrugged, "I care not; let her keep her attitude if it suits her, she will not get far in life with it. Still," she nodded decisively, "let's get the rest of this moved out of the way... I was just on my way to see my Moriath when I spotted you two; if you have no more chores for the time being, would you like to come and see her?"
Yes, she had to admit she loved showing off her beloved crimson, but many candidates would leap at the chance to get up close to any dragon, especially one so lovely as Moriath.
"I should be happy to meet her," Moriath told her rider as she settled herself down again with a flick of her tail and a rustle of her wings. "She seems a nice, sensible girl. I do hope that she Impresses, and Impresses a female. It would be such a shame for a blue, or a black, or silver to claim her."

Mercy was glad to hear that this little incident hadn't ruined the rider's day, imagine being the person responsible for that - well partly responsible, Anya would have been at fault too but regardless earning the ire of a Dragonrider was not high on her list of 'things I want to do today'.
"I expect not" Mercy agreed as she hauled over another crate "Though it's kind of a shame to go through life being that cranky all the time, Maybe she'll come around someday" She added hopefully, always trying to look on the positive side of things. Of course any more thoughts of Anya flew completely out of her mind at Kleo's next words, it seemed the day was certainly taking a positive spin for her and she beamed at Kleos "I would absolutely love to meet Moriath" She told her, in her mind Mercy could recall the crimson's hatching...it had been her first time standing and the memory was still quite vivid "She was lovely when she hatched, I imagine she's only gotten prettier as she's grown"

Perhaps she would change. It was possible. If she did, of course, it would be her duty to forgive the girl her past transgressions. It might not be easy to set aside grudges but sometimes the right thing was difficult, that didn't mean you didn't do it all the same. "I hope she sees the error of her ways," Kleos said with a nod as she continued to shift boxes and sacks, "it would improve her life, and the lives of everyone around her too." Ice whistled his agreement to this; he didn't have a clue what was being discussed, but whatever Kleos was saying was clearly correct.
Before too long everything was shifted out of the way, and Kleos straightened up with a contented sigh, dusting off her hands. "Well, that's that done," she nodded, "now for a little pleasure, eh?" Grinning at Mercy, the young rider set off towards the weyrbowl and her lifemate. Once they were out in the open Kleos' grin broadened; Moriath was coming down to meet them.
"Please give my greetings to your new friend," Moriath rumbled deep in her chest as she padded towards the pair, "and tell her that I hope she Impresses soon."
"Moriath greets you," Kleos passed on obediently, reaching up to stroke her dragon's face tenderly, "and she wishes you the very best of luck at the next hatching."

Mercy was relieved when all the crates and sacks had been shifted out of the way - she didn't mind hard work, but that didn't mean she was glad when it was over and she could relax again either. Besides any chore done with Anya was worth celebrating when it was finished. Of course she wouldn't have finished nearly as quickly if it hadn't been for Kleos. "Thank you again...for all the help" She told the other girl as they headed towards the weyrbowl.
And then the crimson was joining them and my she'd grown large since her hatching. Large and beautiful and Mercy felt both extremely privileged and somewhat self conscious with the Crimsons message, she bowed her head respectfully to the dragon before answering "Greetings Moriath..and thank you for your well wishes, I'll remember them when I'm on the sands next"

Kleos planted a kiss on her lifemate's muzzle before turning to shoot Mercy another smile. "It was my pleasure, I assure you; I do hate to see anyone left sturggling." Especially a lovely lady. What might suit her? Something elegant, perhaps a lovely green, or maybe a very delicate crimson... Maybe a male, but probably not. A lady for a lady, and if a strong protector was needed she herself was more than happy to fill the role.
"I shouldn't think it will be long now until our young Queen rises," Kleos went on with a nod (Moriath rumbled her agreement), "so with luck you will be on the sands again before the turn is out." Was Innari ready for her gold's madien flight? She hoped so... She certainly wasn't ready for Moriath's. Shards. Don't think about that. It would happen, there was nothing she could do, so best to put it out of her mind.
"I was thinking of giving Moriath a little oiling," the crimsonrider said after a short pause, "would you care to give me a hand?"

Mercy smiled "Well..there are some people I might be a bit less inclined to help out" She joked using her fingers to indicate a very small distance "But for the most part I agree" She continued hough she knew quite well she'd probably even stop and help out anyone who needed it...maybe just not a quickly when it came to some people.
"It doesn't seem like it's been that long, but it really has, hasn't it?" Mercy mused "I expected time to drag by while I waited for my next chance to impress..but it really hasn't, guess thats what happens when your kept busy" She remarked with a smile, a flutter of excitement flitted through her at the thought - if they were right..and she was pretty willing to take Moriath and Kleos judgement on that then, well she could impress and be flying herself in the near future.
Aware that she was on the verge of letting her hopes on that subject run away from her Mercy brought her focus back to Kleos and Moriath "Well you helped me with my chores, it's only fair I help you with something in return" She told the other rider "Although I think helping with Moriath far far outweighs moving some sacks about in the enjoyment category"

"Well," Kleos chuckled, waving temporary goodbye to Moriath and motioning Mercy to follow her in the direction of the oil stores, "consider this a reward for being so patient with that other girl, eh?" Time certainly had flown. It seemed like only yesterday that Moriath had hatched out the size of a green, and so sickly weak. Now she stood as tall as a brown, and she was built like one too. Much though she might be full of power and endurance rather than speed and agility, to Kleos she was she the most elegant and ladylike dragon around. That was just how it went; your dragon was always the best.
"Her patience will be rewarded," Moriath rumbled deep in her chest as she watched the pair depart, "I am sure a wonderful female dragon will find her before too long. Perhaps even a crimson." That would be nice. More crimsons in the world was always good, and the young girl certainly seemed good-hearted enough to deserve to bond to the greatest of colours. Still, she knew very well that only time would tell that. The dragons decided, in the end, and humans just had to put up with that. She did like it when they put up with it with good grace.
