Lunch today was on the beach, the early spring weather demanding that the candidates be ushered outside to eat in the warm breezes. The smell of salt air and the not too hot sand beneath their feet was supposed to do wonders for their appetites according to the Candidatemaster who had shuffled them out by barking orders and pointing dramatically. Tiepet was amongst the Candidates who had been asked to carry some of the food out so her arms were loaded the moment she walked onto the uneven surface, the sand making her sway unhappily as she tried to get to her destination.
Around her the chatter of voices made her feel a bit nervous as she moved, their tones so very different from the sounds she preferred to surround herself with, but there wasn't much she could do except try not to topple over with her load.

The fresh air, the gentle breeze, the light, the sight of dragons... Kelos smiled to herself as she made her way towards the tables, a massive platter of bread rolls in hand. It was a glorious day, and all the beautiful ladies looked so much more beautiful under natural light with their perfect hair ruffled into disarry by the light wind...
The only trouble was that by the time she'd set down her big platter of bread, most of the girls she would have liked to sit beside and offer to serve already had companions. Such was life, however, this was only a very small trial and she would endure it without complaint, that was the kind of person she was.
Sighing only internally, Kelos found herself a space on a bench and waited for some food to be passed her way.

Okay finally! The dishes had been set out, the drinks had been gathered to be poured and everyone was seated to be served. Setting up had been a lot easier then Tiepet had thought it would be, and she was even praised for how efficient she had been in carrying and placing everything, but now came the hard part. She would have to find a place to sit amongst the others in order to share a meal with them.
It shouldn't have been such a daunting task, but Tiepet was acting like someone had asked her to run a marathon and then slay a wild feline or something. She'd been with most of these people for two years, so why was it so troubling to still sit amongst them? She figured though eventually she'd have to bite the bullet and just...sit. She couldn't very well eat standing up after all.
So that was that, and without even thinking (or asking) Tiepet sat herself down next to a young woman who'd been glancing about. Surely she wouldn't mind...right?
" . . . "
Tie bobbed her head in greeting, not wanting to seem rude.

...Well, not exactly an ideal dining companion. Nature had given her a fairly pretty face, but the girl was a bit grimy and smelt somewhat of sweat. Still, that was no reason to be rude to her, it was just a reason not to bother flirting. Kelos gave the blonde a smile as she took a bread roll and passed the platter along. "A lovely evening, isn't it?" she commented, feeling she ought to engage the girl in conversation, as it didn't look as if anyone else was going to. "I know you're a candidate of course," she went on, "but I'm afraid I have no idea what your name is. Mine's Kelos, I've been here about half a turn now." Some light easy chatter over dinner was no trouble at all to her, and the grubby girl might be grateful to be noticed and addressed. Perhaps the attention might even make her want to pay a bit more attention to personal hygiene.

"I...I'm Tie. Tiepet. It's a pleasure, and ye..yes. The we-we-weather is nice out."
Tie nearly shrank into her seat as the woman next to her started talking to her. Of course it was no surprise, people tended to speak to those who sat next to them out of common courtesy or naturally friendly natures. Her fingers fiddled on the table before her as she waited her turn to get at the foods, knowing that it would be best for her to pick last - she wasn't a picky eater and could/would eat anything people left behind. Such was the curse of coming from a large extended family.
"I...I was bor-r-n here at the W-w-wweyr. Been a Candidate for a-about two turns."
Sort of her own choice on that, but she doubted this Kelos person really cared. The woman was quite pretty and quite clean, a stark change to the dirt that was Tie. She didn't feel ashamed though, being slightly dirty and smelling of sweat was her trade and craft, so therefore her pride and joy.
"W...where did you come from?"

"I hail from Namor Hold," Kelos replied, sighing internally as she realised this might well be a difficult conversation. She could deal with shy and retiring ladies of course but... Well, this Tie girl was no lady. Still, it would be wrong of her not to make the effort just because she didn't find her attractive. She might make a good friend if she could be persuaded to come out of her shell, and goodness knew she could with with a few more of those.
Right, effort time then. "Do you have a craft?" she quizzed as the question popped into her head. "I never learned one myself, my parents wouldn't let me, but I was always drawn to the idea of either being a Harper or a Runner." Drinks were coming down their way now, and Kelos managed to get hold of a pitcher of juice which she proffered to Tiepet. "Would you like some of this? I think it might be the stuff I saw being pressed at around lunchtime."

"Namor Hold?"
She had never heard of it. The questioning tone in her voice was more than enough indication.
"I'm a Beastcrafter, though I specialize in herding. My family is part of the group that raises the bovines, ovines, caprines, and various other beasts up on the cliffs. I...spend most of my days there, helping them out."
Tiepet probably shouldn't have admitted that she actually spent more time shirking her duties and staying with her parents then doing Candidate chores that were required of her, but it's not like this person she was speaking to probably cared. No one really cared for the Timid Shepherd, but that suited her needs just fine. It left her alone with the animals she loved, and it also gave her time to do...stuff. Whatever that happened to be at the time.
"Drin...drinks, yes please. I would much like something to drink. Did you know the meat we are eating we raised? I know these animals."
Not exactly dinner conversation either.

...Lovely. Kleos poured juice for the other girl, her smile becoming glassy for a moment. It wasn't the subject matter itself so much as the fact that she had no idea of how to react to it. Was Tipet proud of the fact that they were eating the beasts she'd raised, or was she upset? Had the animal currently making beautifully savoury scents from her plate had a name? Oh shards.
"Well... It seems as though you and your family raise them well," Kleos went on eventually, deciding that she might as well compliment the quality of the beasts. "I've not had any yet, but I was around the kitchen last night when it was brought in from being hung; good looking flesh." Her parents had seen to it that she knew what a nice bit of meat looked like, they had after all been under the assumption that one day she would be going to market and choosing the cuts which she would serve to her husband and army of children that even. Wishful thinking on their part, but at least that knowledge was serving her well here.

Tie's face blushed slightly, clearly pleased to hear someone else praising the animals that she and her family took great pains to raise. It didn't bother her in the slightest that they were eating an animal she may have helped lamb - it was there for food after all, and hardly anything else. The ovines and the like for breeding were always in a separate pen anyway, and she spent most of her time away from the slaughter stock.
"I...I hope you enjoy it then. It makes me happy when...people eat our animals - like...like I have a purpose in the Weyr, you know? I have no...no craft, and am...well..."
She wanted to say 'generally useless' but that might have been a bit much on her part. Instead she kept to herself on that last bit, just smiling as she thanked for having her cup filled and she looked at the spread before her. It all looked so good, she loved the idea of eating now!

Of course. It must be nice to have a tangible purpose around the place, to have people praise your work. She herself might be a good person doing good things, but as a candidate without a craft she was really quite limited. She would just have to hope she Impressed, she supposed; once she was a rider there was a lot more that she could do.
"Well, for the ultimate test," Kleos smiled slightly at Tiepet, speared a piece of meat and raised it to her lips. A moment later she made a noise of approval and smiled over at the shy, dirty, but apparently rather sweet herder. "It's simply wonderful," she assured the girl once she'd finished her mouthful. "My compliments to you and to your family." Even if she couldn't do anything big right now, at least she could befiend this nervous little thing. She might not get credit for it but she would know she was doing a good thing and who knew, if she could get Tiepet to come out of her shell a little she might find herself with a good friend in return. It was certainly worth hoping for.

Tiepet was going to reply, she really was, but the sound of a horn coming from the cliffs caught her attention and she was quickly on her feet. With something akin to a mumbled apology she started off and away from the group, completely ignoring any calls that may have come after her.
The horns meant it was the start of lambing! Hurray!
