The booth was small, but it wasn't easy to overlook - set up right near the Kitchen Cavern, with loud banners proclaiming "Itch Fix!", "Fight the Lice!" "Cheap and Effective!" The stand was small and sloppy - just a few wooden crates pushed together, really, and draped with a blanket - but a number of small leather satchels were proudly displayed, advertised as single doses available for half a mark. The product itself was sold in small leather satchels. It was a gooey mess of a liquid, but smelled alarmingly good - sweet, like klah, with some spices and a distinct medicine smell. Beneath the rest of the display, a smaller sign suggested; "Alternative cure: half-price haircuts".

The two boys manning it couldn't have stood as prouder examples of each cure option, the trader Okassis with his shaved head (if only he'd heard about this cure sooner!), and the junior Weyrling S`van with his hair intact, itch-free. Attracting attention along with them was the young brown Galliath, and the three of them made quite a ruckus in peddling their goods out to the crowds.

***

It was a little later in the afternoon than Okassis had wanted, but he'd had to run lap after lap after lap today, and had wound up getting his free time later than usual because of it. Tired as he was, though, there was no way that he would delay the grand opening of their lice cure stand - or, just as bad, let S'van try and run it on his own. It wasn't that he didn't trust his friend, of course!... but S'van was a seaholder, and Okassis was a trader. It didn't take much to realize whose talents were most necessary to this enterprise.

"Bugged by bugs? Itched by insects?" Okassis boomed out, his voice projecting easily over the Weyr. "Stop scratching your scalp! We've got your cure right here, folks. Half a mark gets you sleep at night again! Don't let those smarmy buggers pitch camp on your skull? Fight back with our 100% Guaranteed and Effective, Itch Fix!"

Oh yeah. He was in his element now, for sure!
PostPosted: Sun May 10, 2009 1:36 pm

S'van, who was demonstrating the cure by his mere lice-free presence alone, stood there with Galliath and Okassis, a broad grin on his face. "Step right up and try Itch Fix! If you've got lice, you'll like our price!" The weyrling's long braid was displayed proudly over his shoulder to demonstrate the effectiveness of the advertised product. "Long hair? Don't despair! Our cure is guaranteed to work for even the thickest of manes." It had successfully gotten rid of S'van's lice and kept him louse-free since he had started using it, so he felt confident in recommendation. "Half a mark for twice the relief!" Galliath, delighted to be the subject of such open interest, pranced about and crooned excitedly, managing to keep from toppling any of their displays over.

GAAALLLIIIIATTTTTTTHHHHHH!

The voice was unmistakable in its enthusiasm and its simple and pure loudness. What was also unmistakable was that there was a bright green dragonet running hazardously towards Okassis' and S'van's display. It could have been a disaster, if her victim had been the display and not her friend. Miith skidded to a halt, though lost her balance and slid into Galliath's side anyways. But she was crooning happily at having found her friend. Really, she had just heard S'van's voice and knew that Galliath would be somewhere close by.

Do you want to play? she asked the brown wistfully, for now her bonded nowhere in sight, so she knew she might be able to get away with some of her more rambunctious games. Miith straightened herself, carefully pulling her wings into her side to make sure she didn't topple anything over. E'si would not be pleased if she went about breaking things again. He wouldn't let her climb onto his bed before they went to sleep because he was afraid she'd break it.

She craned her neck, noting S'van, and once he was noted... well, she wanted some attention too. Miith pressed her head against the Weyrling's chest, nudging him impatiently. She wanted to be scratched, of course, at least before E'si came and told her to quiet down!

"No."

Whhhhhaaaat? All she had to do was turn her gaze to the side a little to see her bonded, who was glowering at her in such a way that she knew he loved her.

"Whatever you're thinking, no." E'si grumbled softly, a hand impatiently shoving his bangs back from his face as he approached S'van and Okassis. "...Eh, sorry." He didn't seem to much care about the product they were trying to sell, really, though Faranth knows he could overhear them with how loud they were screeching. It was horrendous advertising, he believed, but he kept that to himself. "Miith heard you." he said quickly to S'van, as if that would thoroughly explain her sudden and eager appearance.

Why, Kyllae had just been meandering around, looking for something to do, when, far off, she heard a familiar voice. Hm...who was that? She paused in her walking, her head tilting a little to the side as her mind did sommersaults trying to remember. She knew a lot of people. But...this voice stood out...oh wait! She instantly broke into a grin. She recognized it after all!

Turning on her heel she practically floated back, taking a turn to flit down the hallway. "Okassis!" she yelled, breaking into a half fun to close the distance. She came to a stop a few feet away, staring at his shaved head, but her grin never faltered. "My my, the bugs have had their way with you, haven't they?" she laughed, teasing, but not to be cruel. "But don't worry, you look handsome, even without that pretty hair of yours." She took a moment to glance over the wares for the first time, smirking. Smart thinking, selling this stuff. There were plenty of people desperate to remove the little bugs without having to shave their hair. Kyllae didn't care whether she had to cut her hair, although she would like to keep it intact. Thankfully, she hadn't been unfortunate enough to get lice...yet anyways.

Seeming to notice the others for the first time, she gave a little curtsey, fingers teasing at the ends of her skirt. Her eyes lingered on the gorgeous brown for a moment, and his green playmate, and then on the other two boys. "I'm Kyllae," she offered them, with a playful wink; though her main focus was still on Okassis. She hadn't yet forgotten their fun at the hatching feast. Hopefully his two friends would prove as fun?

Without his pretty hair? Okassis had started grinning the moment he saw Kyllae - how could he not? He hadn't been so drunk at the Feast to remember its highlight! But he had apparently been so drunk that he thought he'd cut his hair long before that Feast....

Ah, but it hardly mattered. Kyllae had said it, after all - he was handsome enough, with or without a crest of blond to validate it!

"Thought I'd see you again somewhere!" greeted the trader, turning to his partner-in-crime. "This's my buddy S'van. He's a seaholder, y'know - you two ought to get along," he confidently predicted.

"But hey, talking about those bugs - you wouldn't happen to know anybody that's got a scratching problem, would you?"

Awww! S'van's eyes softened when the little green dragonet came crashing into Galliath, and pressed her head against him, reaching out to scratch her. She was utterly adorable-- again. Miith, Galliath's apparent best friend and sole dragonet confidant, was the sweetest green that he had ever met. Of course, that had something to do with the fact that she was the only green dragonet that he had met, and that she tended to favor him by extension to her relationship with his dragon. Melting just a little, the brownrider scratched Miith's eye ridges, a smile on his lips. He paused mid-scratch when E'si arrived, however, and glanced up. "No what?" Blinking, he tried to figure out if the greenrider objected to his touching of the little creature. "Oh. She wanted to play?" In his head, Galliath was complaining about being unable to play with his friend, so that was probably it. Miith, why can't you play? I want to play! the little brown protested, terribly disappointed. "Ha! I'm not surprised that she did, at that. We are rather loud, aren't we?"

His pleasant greeting-- which he hadn't quite gotten around to making, in point of fact-- was interrupted by the arrival of an entirely unfamiliar young lady. An unfamiliar young lady that made S'van bristle a little with how very playful and ... almost flirtatious? she was being towards Okassis. The weyrling's lips firmed into a thin white line, and he had to remind himself that he needed to share Kas. Then, to his utter astonishment, she not only greeted them, but she also winked. Fluttery, fluttery young woman. She had to be hold-bred, she just had to. ... Didn't she? Seaholder girls weren't that... flighty, were they? Reaching with his free hand to absently pat Galliath's curved neck, he made an effort to reassure the dragonet that he would get the opportunity to play later. Now was just a bad time. "Err... Hullo." That feels good! Do that more! I like that. S'van, who was trying to decide how to take the sudden appearance of girl didn't say anything in response.

"Yeah, and I at least want her to learn that playing is for outside... and does not consist of chasing Galliath down the halls hazardously." He reached over, fondly stroking the top of her head, as if to soothe the truth that she was no longer going to be allowed to play indoors. Besides, soon she was going to get too big to get away with playing inside, and he'd rather break it to her now rather than later. Still, it didn't seem to make his dragonet particularly happy, though she hummed her pleasure at the attention he lavished upon her. Really, how could he not love Miith? The green was absolutely darling around people she liked (and so long as there weren't any girls nearby - and yet he still found her dislike of her own gender somewhat cute as well). "Well, I'm certain you'll attract attention with the noise you're making," he remarked lightly, pretty sure he wouldn't emphasis on what he personally thought of the noise.

Because you are busy and Mine says I will have to be oiled soon. Maybe once I'm done being oiled I will play! There was likely no force in the world that would prevent Miith from playing with Galliath. It could be held off, but not prevented. Miith turned her head, lightly buffeting against Galliath's shoulder to reassure him that without a doubt they would be able to play together. But, the arrival of Kyllae marked the beginning of what was going to be a very un-adorable Miith.

The dragonet's eyes narrowed with immediate dislike as soon as she noticed the girl approaching them. It wasn't that she disliked Kyllae on a personal basis, but on the basis that she quite simply was the only acceptable female in the entire Weyr, and the rest could go sit with the wherries. Tell her to go away! Miith whined to her bonded, and while she was one of the dragons who were more comfortable talking to other weyrfolk, she outright refused to have anything to do with the girl approaching. She stood up, giving a pointed glare to the approaching girl, and made her way behind the display so she wouldn't have to see nor deal with the creature. Miith curled up behind S'van, trusting her rider to take care of the 'situation'.

E'si let out a strained sigh, light blue eyes dull with vague annoyance. He probably would have excused himself quickly and taken Miith with him, but the girl was already there and introducing herself to him... and wait. A brow arched high upon his forehead as the girl curtsied. CURTSIED. Like she was trying to sharding impress a wife-less (or not, it didn't particularly matter with some girls) lord holder. Then came the wink, and he had to cover his mouth to keep the first words on his lips from slipping out. He truly had no problem with playful girls, if they were his kind of attractive. But she wasn't his type, and thus he let himself be as annoyed as he should be when he wasn't trying to get laid. E'si never proclaimed to be the nicest of people in the Weyr, rather, quite the opposite.

He removed his hand from his lips that were now curled down into an unpleasant and disapproving frown. "Hmm, must be a hold girl with how willingly she'd lift up her skirts for the first interested party..." he pretended to muse to himself, glancing back to S'van as if he'd never noticed Kyllae in the first place. If he was going to gain a reputation for being mean, he might as well enforce it.

((Sorry Arrie, totally didn't realize Okassis might've had his hair cut before the feast, apologies for the miss-write sweatdrop ))

Kyllae made a mental note to tone it down. Okassis was fine and fun, but these other two boys...what was wrong, hadn't they seen a girl before? She raised a single skeptical eyebrow, but quickly shook it off. Whatever. She did realize at this point that she came on a bit strong. Maybe they were just a little hard to get close too. Fine. But they couldn't introduce themselves? Really? Whatever. She would give them time. They were friends with Okassis? She would give them a second chance.

Snide comments? As if. She wouldn't let something like that get to her. She laughed, smiling happily as ever. "The only BOY who's ever seen me skirtless was Argentina, and he's a Dolphin," Kyllae returned playfully, which was true enough. It wasn't like Argentina had really cared if she'd bathed in the water. And hold bred? Please. She was from a southern Cot hold. If you could even call it that. Couldn't they tell of her origins from her accent? Maybe not, there didn't seem to be many Southerners here, or maybe her accent wasn't as procouned as she thought? Either way, it was irrelevant. And flirty as she was...Kyllae was still ultimately reserved with her body. Not that she told the boys that. It was a lot easier to make friends if she was a little more...forward. It now seemed that the same strategy that worked on Okassis would not work on his companions though.

She leaned against the display, folding her arms as she looked over the strange concoction. No, she didn't have lice. But she could think of some fun she could have with some stuff like this. It smelled good, but rather strong. Haanyath would absolutely hate the smell. That was all Kyllae needed to know.

She pretended to look thoughtful, biting her lip a little before turning back to Okassis. "Well...I could think of quite a few good uses for something like this," she acknowledged, twirling a pale lock around a finger. But...I'm not sure if I happen to have a half mark on me, would you, perhaps...be willing to barter?" Kyllae asked, watching Okassis carefully. If his friend didn't like her, he was unlikely to negotiate. But Okassis...well, she would have to see with him.

((No problem, I was just too lazy/braindead to work it out OOC, so I kept things moving IC. XD))

Okassis seemed equally perplexed about the reception Kyllae had gotten. He had no clue who the dimglow with the green was, but mentally had awarded him the title Mr. Scowly-Face already; but why was S'van being so tight-lipped? Was there some sort of big seaholder vs. Southern thing he'd somehow never heard about, or was this just another expression of his friend's awkwardness around girls?

"Kyllae's got some good stories to tell," the trader confided quietly to his friend, certain of what might loosen the brownrider up, "you ought to swap a few."

Of course, whatever Okassis had imagined about finding some common thread between his friend and his newly favorable acquaintance was lost the moment that word, barter, came into play. He broke away from S'van as quick as a canine at the call of its master - "Well, the price doesn't go much above the cost of materials," he answered immediately, with such a well-practiced tongue that it was impossible to tell how much of an exaggeration that was, "but I'm sure we could work something out. What did you have in mind?"
PostPosted: Tue May 12, 2009 4:50 pm

Kyllae enjoyed Okassis enthusiasm. It made it easier to enjoy herself and to ignore his less than enthusiastic friends. Shells, even the little green seemed to be put off by her! Whatever. If they didn't like her...there wasn't much she could do. There was no telling with some people. Okassis seemed genuinely interested in the idea of selling off his profit. Despite her somewhat rural upbringing, she did know at least a little about how this haggling thing worked. And besides, Kyllae really liked money. Almost as much as she liked parties and wine. It was in her interest to at least conserve it a little.

She realized Okassis had the advantage. It was his job to sell things to people. He had experience. The only things Kyllae could think of immediately off the bat that she had were the fact that she was a girl, something Okassis seemed interested in, and the fact that they knew each other. Whether either of those would be any help remained to be seen.

She crossed her legs, knowing how to accentuate not only their shape but their length. "Well, you know, I'm getting this for my cousin, you see, and by selling it cheaper to me, you're not only helping me out, but the entire Weyr. You see, my cousin is impressed to Haanyath, who's practically a giant, foul tempered wher. And surely you know how nasty whers can be?" That part wasn't that much of a stretch. Haanyath certainly looked the part of a wher. All muscular and almost grotesque, she wasn't very pretty. And she was nasty as all get-out. Why, by helping T'ka with lice, Kyllae might help to alleviate just a little of Haanyath's foul mood. What a service that would be!

"And, you know, I wanna stay pretty myself. It's not as easy to do if I were to lose my hair though. So, you know...I was thinking, maybe three doses for a mark?" she offered with a shrug, looking nonplussed. It seemed fair enough to her. The last one bag?...well...Haanyath wouldn't know what hit her.

S'van was somewhat at a loss for how to respond. The presence of a very self aware flirtatious girl made him highly uncomfortable. More so because she was directing that flirtation squarely at his best friend, whom he had never pictured in that way. Granted, he had seen other girls flirt with him before, he just had never been brought into the flirting really. It was quite a new, somewhat odd experience. Glancing from Okassis to E'si, he tried to decide how to best respond. Is she the nice girl, mine? Galliath asked cheerfully, bouncing over to play with Miith, whose attempt at hiding he was utterly oblivious to. S'van reached out a steadying hand to keep the dragonet from toppling over the display.

Shifting uneasily, the weyrling drew himself up somewhat. "Stories like... what exactly?" He glanced at the girl, trying for a friendly smile, though it fell somewhat short. "What kind of stories do you have, then?" Okassis seemed determined to get him involved in the conversation, and he had never gone out of his way to disappoint his friend. He was not going to start now. "Must be something... you've got sort of an unfamiliar accent." He'd never met a Southerner before, for all of his time at a seahold. Given that he had not been involved in any actual cross continental sailing trips, that was not much of a surprise. A small hold like his own would not have come into contact with such exotic types. ... Exotic was pushing it really, but it was true that he was now meeting folks who were far, far different than he was used to.

It was a mistake to acknowledge E'si in any way when he seemed bent on speaking his opinion. His blue eyes brightened with malicious pleasure at the information she fed him, information that would flawlessly be turned back against her. No one was stepping in on his little display of hate, no one was holding him back, and so he let the words slip from his lips with an easy, unmistakable grace of someone who's had practice with such a thing many times before. He inclined his head towards Kyllae, blissfully unaware of Okassis and S'van. Teasing his lower lip between white teeth he seemed to consider a response, though it was already formulated in his head, spinning excitedly and waiting for its moment to be put into words. His fingers tapped against the display briefly, and with a smile he leaned forward.

"I do feel sorry for Argentina, one, he had to see you indecently; and two, you abandoned him." His teeth showed now in his smile, and it took a minimal amount of effort to keep the happy purr from his voice. "I guess it's an easy thing for a girl like you to do, to pick up and leave all the friends who had grown attached to you. I don't quite think you're the kind of girl to care about anyone other than yourself, and I pity the dimglow who makes the mistake of befriending you." He shrugged easily and leaned back against the display. "But, I guess that's not important, really. You're going to start a wondeful new life here, make plenty of friends who don't truly care for you... and then when you get old and still don't Impress, you can go back home where just maybe Argentina is waiting for you. Likely not, since you abandoned him and all, but one can always hope!"

Done now with his little assault, he turned to face S'van. He didn't have the sort of friendship with S'van that Okassis did, but he considered them to be friendly enough together. "I think I might buy some. Tell me about it," he urged the other Weyrling, hoping that it would be enough of a distraction to keep him from going off at Kyllae again...

...Nope.

He visibly winced at her 'bartering', because honestly, no one would agree to such a ridiculous idea. With an exasperated expression, he turned his head to her. "You'd have a better chance bribing him with your body, but I'm sharding sure that it's not even worth one dose."

Galliath get her to go away! Mine is not doing so good a job... Miith complained at her clutchbrother, and even his playful antics weren't enough to get her to come out from hiding behind S'van, though she occassionally lifted her head to send glares at the 'girl' that was ruining her fun. Impatiently she nudged S'van, as if that would push him into action as well. The other boy clearly wasn't going to help her, though, since he seemed to like talking to that girl.

Miiinnneeeee...

"I'm trying, Miith," E'si responded with a soft sigh.

A mark for three? Immediately, one of Okassis's eyebrows shot up. He might think the girl was pretty and fun to talk to, but that wasn't enough to make a dimglow out of him?

"Really now? And just a moment ago, weren't you telling me you didn't have a half-mark to your name?" the trader asked in a teasing voice, though his eyes narrowed shrewdly. "I think I could offer you three for a mark and a quarter, if you're feeling a bit pinched in the wal--"

That was about as far as he got, before he caught sound of E'si's mocking and instigating voice. His brow creased, and he shot a gruff glare at the greenrider. Who the hell did that guy think he was, getting in the middle of Okassis's business and talking to his lady friend like that?! He had half a mind to scruff the fardler by the back of the shirt and shove him off on his way - but for his turning to S'van with the mind of business, in fact, Okassis might have been only too happy to.

"... Maybe a mark and a quarter, if you'll forgive the fact I didn't beat the deadglow bloody for you," Okassis amended snidely.

((Krysin, I love E'si! I wish people would snap at Kyllae like that more often xD heart ))

Chuckling, Kyllae dug around in her pocket, producing a mark and a quarter. "No apologies needed. I wouldn't want you to waste your time, or anything." she held out her hand for him to take the money. True, maybe she did have a little more money than she let on. Seeing as she and Argentina had been such good friends, he was always eager to alert her if he became aware of a flit nest somewhere on the beach. Needless to say, Kyllae could usally sell these off for a good price. She wasn't hurting for money.

She couldn't be bothered responding to the rider of the moody green. Maybe he just liked boys better than girls? There seemed to be quite a handful of people like that at the Weyr. He had struck a little bit of a nerve, with the whole abandoning Argentina part, and she might have lashed out with physical violence a month or two ago. But recently, she'd come to terms with herself. In one of her rare moments of free time, Kyllae'd persuaded her cousin, and Haanyath, with a bit of monetary exchange to take her back to visit Southern. The trip was secret, less than a candlemark long. But it'd been...nice. She'd met up with Argentina, apologized to him. It...made her feel better. And Argentina had given her a good bit of advice. No, E'si was right. She had left him. Left everyone there. But no one had said it would be easy, to make the sacrifice to be a Dragonman. Or Woman. Everyone made sacrifices coming here. Did he assume it was only she had that had to make that difficult choice? Even a Weyrbrat stood to lose something by becoming a candidate. No, really, it was a good thing. She should be thanking E'si for this little bit of self reflection. And why, by golly, she would! She offered the boy a quick smile, though he obviously wouldn't know why, before turning to S'van.

Stories! Kyllae was good at stories. And she had quite a lot of them. "By the queen's egg have I got stories!" she laughed, eyes sparkling with excitement. Turning a little so he could see the side of her right leg, she ran a finger down the numerous scar marks, arranged in a semi circle pattern. "I've got a particularly good one about a nasty Water-snake, if you'd ever care to hear it," she offered.

Grimacing, S'van looked over the scar. Well, he had opened himself up to that, hadn't he? With a slightly pained look, he quirked an eyebrow. "Water-snakes... always the most fun. Run into a lot of those, do you?" Did he want to hear her story? Did he really have a choice at this point? "Just a moment. I need to talk with this fellow here, but then you can tell all of us your story." Cringe. Oh Faranth, Okassis was looking ready to deck E'si. This... was distinctly uncomfortable. Anxiously, S'van glanced between his two friends, utterly unsure of what to do next. ... Selling the product was important. Okassis would have to agree with that, wouldn't he? How do I make her leave? More importantly, how did Galliath do so without accidentally hurting her? "Erm, well... it worked for me in a candlemark. You leave it in your hair, and it kills the lice. Then you wash it out, see?" He tried an awkward, clumsy smile. Why was everyone so tense?
