If Okassis and Sovann were going to pull off their stunt, they would need spectators and taste testers. Now, Sovann knew that Kas had ways of getting around, methods to his madness. He had connections, that Sovann was sure of. Okassis always had connections. Traders managed that kind of thing instinctively, making contacts wherever they went. They had to, or else they'd be markless traders. Still, he couldn't leave everything up to his buddy, so Sovann strode out of the barracks looking for a hapless soul to involve in their trickery. His idle wandering eventually took him to the lake where the dragons bathed, and he paused to enjoy the sight. He'd never actually seen a dragon bathing before, though he'd heard tell that dragons liked the sea water as much as they liked any other water. Had he been lucky before, he might've chanced upon one bathing by the shore back at home, but he hadn't been lucky. Oh, he had been lucky in other respects, but not that one. Hmm. Who exactly could he reel in this time?

The newcomer wasn't the only one who'd never seen a dragon taking a bath before. Jiriar was finding himself quite engrossed with the process. He'd bathed all sorts of beasts before, but they paled in comparison to the girth of one of the flying defenders of Pern! He'd seen almost all shades and sizes of dragons today, having found himself a shady little spot to sprawl out against, his back situated up against a moss-covered rock. It was easy enough to miss the young man approaching the lake when there were dragons frolicking in the lake, but Jiriar twisted his head anyway with a flick of his long bangs. A new face--not that that was an oddity, considering where he was.

"Hoy." He'd call out lightly, his tone light and hazel eyes friendly. "You come here to watch the dragons too?" Even if he hadn't, who cared? It was an easy way to start up a conversation. "Never quite seen anything so big before 'n my life..." A low, appreciative whistle would slip from him as he again glanced out across the lake, shaking his head slowly.

Hazel eyes, hmm? Sovann grinned. The lanky candidate had eyes much like his own! That appealed to the youngster's vanity, and he approached the apparently talkative young man. "Oh sure, I came here to watch the dragons, but that wasn't all. I'm looking for someone or someones to help me and a buddy of mine out. We're having a contest with this girl, y'see, and we need folks to test out the klah we're making when the contest happens. I was wondering if anyone else would have the same idea as me, to come see the dragons bathing, and if so, if they wanted in. ... So, do you? Want in, I mean?" Without so much as exchanging names, Sovann was already asking favors of his new acquaintance. That was his way, of course, but it was absolutely ridiculous. "Yeah, aren't they just enormous?" he said dramatically, waving his arms to indicate length. "I've never seen anything so big, either."

"Oh?" Jiriar said idly, amused by the other's forwardness. A contest, did he say? And klah? "Can't pass up an opportunity, mm? Though, I'll say this; if this is your way of poisoning off every other Candidate you can find, I salute you for the cleverness." His eyes flashed, amused, and Jiriar rose to his feet slowly, idly swiping off his leathers. "Never heard of a klah making contest. Shards, don't even think I know how to make klah." Not well, anyway. He'd been assuming the man was a Candidate as well, considering his age and... well, the fact that he had enough free time to be recruiting people for this competition of his!

"Downright beastly." He agreed amiably, seeming to catch himself and holding out a strong, calloused hand towards the other. "I'm Jiriar, by the way. Hopefully not the late Jiriar after this thing of yours. What brought all of this on, anyway?" Came the amused drawl, and another lazy grin tugged at his lips.

"Well not poison, unless someone really doesn't like klah, but it's definitely not going to be poisonous. Besides, if I did plan on poisoning it, do you think I'd tell you so?" Sovann bantered, amused by the amiable way in which the (if he gauged him correctly) somewhat older candidate was taking his approach. He took Jiriar's hand, and shook it heartily, his own hand calloused and covered in tiny scars. "My name's Sovann, and I am a candidate as well, just like you guessed." Oh Shells, that would've been a grand idea. Of course, he was pretty sure the dragons wouldn't have approved, and would make sure that he didn't end up Impressing, ever. "Oh, well, you see my friend and I were heading down to the Lower Caverns, when we came across this girl. We got to talking, and she mentioned how she's great at making klah, and we couldn't resist. Just had to offer up some competition, you know?" He grinned, definitely enjoying the chance to be social, and to be doing something that did not involving fish.

"Of course not. Don't want to startle the beasts before you've got them in the dragon's pen, mm?" He chuckled, eyes half-lidded as he studied the other a bit more closely. Seemed to be an eager sort, the kind that made sure things were interesting. Interesting was good. "Pleasure then, Sovann, and I'm glad to hear it. Makes for one more live body between me and a raging dragonet, mm?" He grinned slyly, but in a friendly way that implied he was teasing. "Ah-hah, and so you're rounding up judges of sorts? Well no wonder. Again, if it finally gives me a good reason to ignore my chores, I'd be happy to help." Jiriar shook his head with amusement--he didn't even want to think about changing anymore glows...

"It'll be tomorrow in the morning, so I'm not sure how many chores you'll be getting out of, but who knows? There might be enough of a stir about it that the schedule's disrupted for part of the day." That of course was what he was hoping for. If they really rustled up a crowd, the contest would be even more fun. There was also a chance that he and Okassis would be kicked out of the Weyr on their rumps by the time that all was said and done, but he was hoping that the Candidatemaster had some hint of a sense of humor. "Oh sure, it's the raging dragonets you're worried about. Of course. It'll be my pleasure to act as a living shield." Grinning conspiratorially, he cocked his head to the side. "And you're right, I wouldn't want to startle the beasts... not so soon in the game, anyway."
