Rayale sat down heavily and leaned against the wall, an mug of Klah in one hand and a hot roll in the other, taking a breather between chores.
"Oof..." He sighed, wearily, wiggling his toes wearily. "I've discovered the secret..." He informed one of the flits that dogged him, and Rikk and Skyborne twittered in a mockery of answering him. "...They don't really bring us here to Impress. They bring us here to do the chores... Shards I miss the boat."
Was it normal to get a little homesick? The Hatching was looming out there, there were eggs still on the sand, and he wanted to be out on a boat watching Shipfish in their wake.

Oh dear. Sovann was almost required to respond to that, wasn't he? Even though it had clearly not been directed at him. Shards I miss the boat. ... Sovann did not miss the boats that he had sailed, not really... though he did miss the water, and the ship fish. "Not quite used to the land yet, are you?" He didn't so much as bother to apologize for intruding on a private moment. After all, he'd been fairly close by when the lad had spoken and in the midst of one of those chores. "Do they now? There are certainly enough Candidates to keep the Weyr in clean clothes, fresh food, and all of that for years to come, aren't there?" They would never have to bother themselves to change the glows either, would they? He grinned slightly, leaning against the counter with his own mug of klah.

Rayale straightened with an embarrassed flush, which briefly scattered the two blue flits, who both settled to stare at them from a high perch.
"Oh I uh...Land's fine. It's just so... I know we're on an Island but I feel like I'm going to forget what the sea looks like. I know it's a days walk, but, try and get a day around here." He sighed, feeling like a bit of a whiner for saying it, but he did. "You're probably right though." he laughed. "Must be nice. Of course I suppose they need all the spare time to keep their dragons cleaned and oiled. They're so big! I keep imagining they do it in their sleep." He joked. "Sorry. Didn't mean to complain like an old lady."

Hunnhh... this one was almost as easily flustered as he was, wasn't he? Sovann shook his head, the grin firmly in place. "Don't you mean like an old wherry?" he teased, taking a long sip from his mug of klah. "Aye, I know what you mean. I'm far more used to feeling the sea air on my face than kicking about in a stuffy old cave. There's nothing wrong with missing it." The grin broadened, and he quirked an eyebrow at Rayale. "My name's Sovann, and my folks are fishermen and the like, so I think I know something of the pangs you're having. Granted, I don't miss that part of it so much." He was really enjoying the opportunity to branch out, to experience new things, but he could sympathize with the man. "I doubt that you'll ever forget what the sea looks like. You've got those blues don't you?" Oh, he was definitely teasing.

Rayale ducked his head sheepishly and grinned in agreement. "Yeah I guess you're right. They're at least as much trouble as the sea." He admitted. "Two blue flits, how was that for a piece of luck though. Maybe I should figure someone's trying to tell me something. I'm Rayale, I think it's pretty obvious I was training on a fishing boat." He admitted. "I kinda loved it, though I could hardly pass this up. If I don't impress though, it's definitely back to the boat. I can't change glows for the rest of my life and not go mad."
PostPosted: Sat Apr 25, 2009 1:56 pm

"Oh I'd say that it's fairly obvious," Sovann agreed, nodding to Rayale. "I'm Sovann, and my folks gave me as much training as they could manage. I'm not much for fish and all of that, but that's because fishing requires, hmm, patience." Something that he had so little of, after all. "If they had me changing glows, I'd be right there with you, but y'see they've got me helping out the cook, and that's decent work." He could not for a moment imagine spending his days on menial tasks that he didn't enjoy. "Maybe someone is trying to tell you something, at that. Really, how often does a man Impress two blues, eh?" Not often, of course.

"Well after the hatching, maybe we'll know." He laughed. "Probably not though. It would be too unlikely. If he did manage to impress a dragon, though, and it was a blue, he'd -never- live it down. "I'm not terribly good in the kitchen... I might have broken some plates..." He admitted, rubbing the back of his neck. "...I can cook alright but doesn't do anyone much good if there's nothing left to put the food on. Guess it's not for everyone though, there's a lot of patience and a lot of team work."
PostPosted: Sat Apr 25, 2009 2:13 pm

"That's not how I think of cooking at all," Sovann commented, stretching slightly to reach the klah pot to top off his all but empty mug. "Y'see, with cooking there's always something you're doing, you know? So if you've got idle hands like mine, it doesn't take much for them to be kept busy in the kitchen." Now that was an amusing thought. ... What if the lad Impressed a blue dragon? What then? Grinning from ear to ear, the seaholder quirked an eyebrow at his fellow Candidate. "You know, if you Impressed a blue dragon you'd have a full set. Wouldn't that be something?" He was not aware that his thoughts ran on similar lines to the other's, and he didn't bother hiding how much the idea amused him. "That would be some luck. And you know something? I've broken my fair share of dishes. They haven't forbade me from working in the kitchens yet."

"I guess I was pretty impressive about it then." He grinned, and then laughed. "Full set? I think it would start all kind of rumors about what people impress and if it relates to Flits." He tilted his head slightly and watched Sovan, noting how interested he seemed to be in cooking. "I guess I never really thought it was that intersting. I just feel big and clumsy and very awkward."
PostPosted: Sat Apr 25, 2009 2:36 pm

"Tell you one thing, Rayale was it? You'd be shardin' good at turning the spit. There's all kinds of tasks in the kitchen that don't require a soft touch, if you take my meaning. Could use someone hauling goods from stores, too. Not everything in the kitchen needs hands like mine." Sovann held up a hand to demonstrate, and while it was somewhat scarred and as rough as ever a seaman's hand, the fingers were slim and long, good for dealing with the sort of fare that the Weyr subsisted off of. They were strong enough as well, of course. There was no fisherman worth his salt who didn't have a fierce grip. "Oh, it's fair interesting, at least to me. There's all kinds of spices that need mixing, and you've got to pay attention to what you're doing, and all. I'm leaning all about what goes good with redfruit, for instance, and anything that isn't fish. Learned that at home."

"Well that I'd probably be able to do." He admitted, still sheepish. "I guess there really really is a lot to remember. "How do you keep track of all the difference spices anyway? I mean it's a bit different than saying "Oh well we can take this on ship but not this cause it'll go bad..."
PostPosted: Sat Apr 25, 2009 3:40 pm

"Well, y'see, they've got different smells, right? And food that's done right has a certain taste to it. So, so long as I know what it's supposed to be like, I can just add in the right spices. 'Course that doesn't work for everyone. They've got recipes and such to help you learn the right way to prepare different meals." Recipes, however, weren't much help to Sovann. Oh, he could read them fine, it was just the portions that were difficult. He was a lot better at figuring things out on his own than he was at puzzling them out from someone's written notes. "Also, usually the rule is 'less is more'. Spices are expensive, even in the Weyr."

Rayale considered this, frowning thunderously as he added this information to what he already knew. "Make's sense. I mean around here salt has to be the easiest to get. We're right on the sea, just takes time to get it from the sea-water, but not everything goes with it." He tilted his head cockily and added. "Bet you can't tie all the knots I can though. Or fix a fishing net.... Not that any of that's been doing me a lot of good." He slumped his shoulders again and grinned in a lopsided fashion as his breif flash of pride flickered.
PostPosted: Sat Apr 25, 2009 5:30 pm

"Oh you're on about the knots." Sovann laughed, in his element already with a challenge on the table. "'Course you know, I learned how to do that kind of thing at home. I can fix nets with the best of 'em... not that I'd want to. Never really enjoyed all of that. That doesn't mean my ma and da didn't expect it of me." He grinned and nudged Rayale slightly. "What'd you say we put that to the test, hmm? We can find out who is more proficient at tying knots, maybe ease some of that homesickness of yours? You're not lonesome for the sea, are you?" Oh he sure asked a lot of questions, but he was enjoying himself! He liked making friends, even friends whose interests were so different from his own. Besides which, he was absolutely incapable of resisting a good challenge.

Having felt so awkward for so long, Rayale caught himself grinning in spite of himself at the challenge. "You're on!" He burst out, an surprise outburst from the otherwise shy young man. Although he was uncomfortable and awkward among strangers, he enjoyed the chance to open up, especially when he didn't feel like he was being judged, though often enough he was imagining the judgement he thought people were heaping on him. "...I am a bit. But it'll be fine." He admitted, grinning awkwardly again. He had an expressive face that lit up or darkened at every flicker of emotion.
"Weren't you part of the Klah-competion by the way? I didn't make it, but I heard all kinds of talk about it."
