I think I Made a Mistake Alistair prided himself on being able to hide his emotions, to put on a mask and act. It had gotten him through a year of dealing with a horrifically intense crush - and crush no longer felt like the right word. He was in love with Lance Greyson, and it was killing him. He couldn't even act anymore - his depression was probably obvious to everyone around him. How was he supposed to act, though? He'd made an awful mistake.
He had made it home from DestinyCon exhausted, battered, and heartbroken. He had conveyed his feelings in the most obvious way possible, finally - and, well.
It hadn't gone well.
Lance hadn't rejected him - not in those words - but how else was he supposed to interpret "we'll talk about this later"? And worse, more confusing, after that Lance had acted no different than usual. He'd held onto his hand, protected him - which was horribly, unfairly cute and endearing and everything that made him love Lance - even said he didn't want to lose him.
And yet all that was just...Lance. At least he knew the blond didn't hate him now, which was better than he'd always feared.
He'd done no better than noncommittal answers about the convention - it had been fun, but everything changed when the youma attacked, and he was sure his parents would very soon be seeing that mess on the news - and then slipped off upstairs to hide in his room. All he wanted was to be alone with his thoughts. His misery, more properly.
He hated not knowing. "We'll talk about it later" was the worst response Lance could have given him, because the not knowing was eating him up inside.
He slid off the wig, the props, the jacket - and marveled at how well Cait's construction had held up. There were some dings, but for the most part it was solid. Remarkable, really, and a nice distraction from sad thoughts.
He was somewhat annoyed with himself, all things considered. He wasn't usually one to mope and sulk, but then he had never been rejected before. Not by someone he was serious about. And not in such an awful, confusing way.
He flopped facedown on his bed, groaning quietly. He wanted to think differently, to hope that maybe Lance wasn't actually turning him down - that he really did just want to think about what happened - but that was worse, because he could only seem to come up with worst-case scenarios. Lance was trying to figure out how to turn him down. Probably more awful, Lance was trying to decide if he should pretend to return Alistair's feelings to make him feel better. (No, that wasn't Lance, he wouldn't do that.)
Certainly Lance could just have been confused, and that stung too, because if he didn't feel anything after a year, or didn't know what he felt...that was as good as turning him down, wasn't it?
He wished Lance had acquiesced to his desperate request to forget it ever happened. It would be so much easier that way, if they could pretend nothing was different.
Except, well, everything was.
