User ImageName: Raemos Medrol
Race: Oblivionite
Gender: Male
Class: Mage (Also uses a sword)
Personality:

Raemos has grown into a confident young man, kind but stubborn, mature but sarcastic, and always very uptight and professional. He has a strong desire to prove himself and gives everything his all, whether the task is for a superior, a friend, or for his own satisfaction.

He also overachieves, even when it might not be the best thing to do. He goes out of his way to encounter and neutralize threats. His enemies are not simply fought, they are vanquished. A problem is not simply solved, it is attacked with every mental power he can bring to bear. Even mundane tasks are meticulously and carefully accomplished, and nothing is ever left half-done: it's either do it all or die trying.

Raemos strives for excellence, and often enough, he finds that his energy is not limitless. Frequently, he overworks and tires himself out, pushing his body to its very limits and, sometimes, too far beyond. He takes great pride in this, however, and he wears it with an air of smug superiority. It is the source of his confidence: whatever his flaws, he has done everything to it's fullest, most complete detail, and has – as such – made up for them.

He is a lover of books and especially loves to read fiction stories about tragic heroes and grand adventures – perhaps imagining himself to be such a hero, though he professes (and believes himself) to have only ever wanted to be an ordinary person (an ordinary Orderite person). He also enjoys reading technical and speculative tomes on the nature of Magescan magic, and, being highly religious in his devotions to the Goddess Seren, mythological and religious texts. He is also partial to various other historical, archeological, and naturalistic writings.

His passion, though, lies in his own writing: He likes to write nonfiction observations of the world around him and about his own life, accompanied by sketches, in his journal. He loves to sketch even seemingly ordinary scenes. These are usually for personal appreciation, however – he rarely shows anybody his sketches. In turn, he rarely offers to draw something specific for a person – the idea of drawing for anybody other than himself makes him nervous. His sister is an exception – he often sends sketches in his letters to her and she, in turn, shows her friends.

His sister was the only other child his age while he was growing up, there being nothing but their own property and desert for miles around. Having not grown up around many people other than his immediate family, he can appear to be a bit stilted and awkward, and even shy, when talking to people. He can actually be quite amiable when given the chance, but normally he hides behind the bulwark of officialdom and rank.

Outside of his work as a Guardian, he does not have the requisite confidence of will to go out of his way to initiate a conversation, and is just as happy to be reading a book in a cozy corner alone than to be actively chatting in a large group of friends.

His vocabulary is eloquent, and could perhaps be described as overly so, and he has a tendency to be melodramatic, a trait that comes out in his writing as well as his speech and gestures. Even though in later years he has become a little more snide and dark in thought, he still thinks in terms of grandeur, elegance, romance, awe, and tragedy, and likes to describe things in ways that evoke those powerful emotions. He falls in love with the idea of a thing easily, even if the reality is not nearly as beautiful.

He aspires to be his own ideals of heroism, good, and order. Doing things that he feels are heroic makes him feel good about himself. Unfortunately, though this is slowly becoming less so, his default state of being is still self disgust. He always knew he was different from his family, but he wishes that he had somehow been a tragically crippled and mutated Orderite child. Instead, he is a normal Oblivionite, a child of Soudana, cursed to be away from the very light he loves.

He hates what he is, and actively rejects his racial identity. This can sometimes make him seem delusional, or bizzare. But in his head, he feels he is an Orderite, and, because of his appearance, he has a low opinion of himself and feels that he must excel to overcome his 'foul freakishness.' Growing his wings and tail has not helped him at all. However, in an attempt to find an identity, he has begun to come into his own as a Guardian, taking on the uniform as his self and behaving neutrally and professionally at all times, even off duty.

User ImageRaemo's has never known his real parents, nor does he particularly wish to. He was born to two oblivionite spies who had a proud family history of espionage. Why his father was killed, why his mother fled with him, and why she tattooed and left her infant son in the brushlands of the Malro desert are a mystery, as is where she ended up. Raemos knows none of this, not even a rumor.

The Orderite family he lives with raised him as one of their own, and it is their story that is firmly interlocked with his.

It of course started when Mallew Medrol, an Orderite Barbarian, met Sonia Valis, an aspiring archeologist looking for a bodyguard to accompany her to study the Kawyn Ruins and help to chronicle it's mysteries. Formerly an archer with a crossbow, Sonia had given up the path of the warrior long ago to study the past, and thus needed someone to protect her.

They fell in love during their adventures, married, and hoped to start a family.

Unfortunately, Sonia had a very difficult pregnancy that had the potential to become far worse. Their local healer recommended traveling to lake Tyuafel and using the healing water there. They stayed in the hot springs village, but the lake's healing affects did little to ease the pregnancy, leaving Sonia and her unborn child still in danger. Desperate, the couple left for Aisko to see if Lake Vonafel could help them.

It did, but by this point Sonia was too pregnant to travel safely. They stayed in Aisko until she gave birth to her first daughter, Vonafel, Vona officially and for short, named after the lake that likely saved both her and her mother's life. Vona seemed healthy, and, relieved, they started to travel back to their home in Serenia. They soon discovered that, between the baby and their supplies, they only had enough coin to make it to Eowyn.

Mallew and Sonia decided that they might as well stay on the desert continent, and- though they were not comfortable with the more mixed nature of the port city, did odd jobs in Taliuma until they had enough money to make a way for themselves in the vast desert.

They bought a few Kargoths and desert sheron and started their own ranch out in the desert within view of Tukyere and it's tree, while being far enough away for their Orderite comfort.

Vona grew into a tall, strong, fresh-faced and beautiful Orderite girl, and, at an early age, decided she, like her mother, would deviate from the path of a warrior and become a tailor. Sonia spent her time collecting the odd artifact from the desert and taking care of the ranch, and Mallew spent his time both there and out in the wilderness, killing dragons and bringing home materials. And, of course, spending time with his wife.

Sonia was not very fertile and, because of the painful and dangerous nature of her previous pregnancy, this was all fine and good with her (and with Mallew). It was hard enough raising one child. They hadn't thought about raising two.

But when she became pregnant again, she was delighted, as was Vona. Mallew was wary, since they were still sinking money into their ranch and paying creditors had little way to properly afford both a future for their children and another visit to a healing lake.

The pregnancy, though, seemed to go well, and Mallew began to relax. Sonia began preparing a new room for the new baby, and Vona (then 6) began making baby clothes and a blanket for her new sibling – her first major cloth work project. The pregnancy went exceptionally well, so it was a surprise that, when Sonia went into labor and delivered, the baby- a boy- was stillborn.

Sonia took ill with a malady that was both in her body and her soul and was bedridden. Vona was to stay at her side and take care of her. It was Mallew who had the burden of burying his own unborn son. The unnamed child was buried near the garden, a single slab of small flat stone as a marker.

A dark cloud seemed to hang over the house, with Vona being the least affected, as she hadn't quite understood what had happened. Sonia was ill, and Mallew was occupying himself with as much busywork around the ranch as possible to distract himself from his own pain.

It was Vona who, one morning not a few days after the horrible event, found the Oblivionite baby while foraging in the brushlands. The young boy was barely a few months old, maybe not even that, and his parents were nowhere in sight. When Vona showed her mother her little dark blue find, her mother's depression broke and she took the baby into her arms, nursing him.

Mallew came home to find that, within the day, his daughter and wife had adopted an Oblivionite baby as their own. He wasn't sure what to think about that- he was not fond of the soulless ones, and had even fought against them in skirmishes in the past. His wife and daughter were clearly happy, though, so he tried to accept it as best he could for their sake. The awkwardness of it all vanished surprisingly quickly as their 'son' filled the void that the unnamed unborn baby boy had left.

They gave him the name they would have given their son, and raised him as if he was their blood and species. It did help that Raemos was a sweet boy- gentle, soft spoken, well mannered, and helpful- everything they had ever wanted in their child. As soon as he could stand on his own, he was working by his family's side on the ranch. He never thought of himself as anything other than one of them. Of course, he knew he was different- he had no eyes, was darker colored, and couldn't summon wings to fly, but it had never occurred to him that he wasn't their blood.

His sister and him were close and had a bond of rivalry and friendship that was stronger than steel. When he was 7 and deemed mature enough to handle the grown up tasks on the ranch on his own, his parents decided that they had enough money to take Vona to Ashen city and get her apprenticed as a tailor there. It was not often that they thought of their son as an Oblivionite, but it became a major sticking point. He wanted to go with them, and Vona wanted him along too for support, but their parents said no- he would not be safe on Ashen City's streets, though they couldn't bring themselves to explain it to either child. They had pretended he was an Orderite for so long - even in Tukyere, that city of exiles, hybrids, and freaks - that they almost believed it themselves and breaking the fantasy would be too much for them to handle. Instead, they left him on the ranch to take care of it on his own.

A month later- the fastest they could schedule coming back- they arrived to find their ranch well taken care of and a very upset Raemos waiting for them. He had wanted to go very badly- not even the souvenirs that they had bought for him were enough to soothe his loneliness and frustration.

Vona, too, was upset. A rebellious and naïve 13 year old, she wanted her brother to visit her. They corresponded often, and she cleverly figured out, to some extent, a way to make his visit work. Together, they plotted a crafty ruse. The next time his parents took a trip- later that year- Raemos managed to hire someone from Tukyere – with his sister's advice, of course - to take care of the ranch, and slipped away. He disguised himself with bandages and goggles and bought passage on a ship. His sister met him outside of the city and escorted him in, claiming he was her crippled and disfigured younger brother.

They had a blast going around the town, and Vona thought that it would be a great surprise to bring him back to her dorm and show her parents how smart she was.
Their reaction was not what she had intended. They freaked out and Vona's mother quickly got her and Rae out of the city and onto a transport for Eowyn. Mallew explained things to Vona, and Sonia explained things to Raemos. It was a traumatic experience for all of them.

Raemos had put them all in danger unknowingly, and they felt he deserved to know the truth: that he was not an Orderite as they were, but a pure-blooded Oblivionite. Though they still loved him very much, he was never to pull a stunt like that because he could get them all killed.

That he was an Oblivionite was a surprise to him but was also, in a way, not. It made sense in an unfortunate way- He had always known he was different. While on the one hand it was better than being a cripple, it was also worse: he saw Oblivionites from an Orderite point of view, as dangerous soulless objects, and it was hard to comprehend that he was such a creature. They told him what they knew about Oblivionites, but he refused to believe it entirely. To be one would mean that he was evil and soulless, and he did not want to think that he had no soul inside of him, and would never have an afterlife with them. On some level, he knew it was true, but he continued to pretend that he was an Orderite child, adopting the disguise nearly full time.

Though Vona understood the situation now and was horrified at what she had almost done, she still wanted to see her brother, and her parents wanted to make her happy. After heated discussion, they decided that there was a way to compromise - the main part of Serenia was not nearly as dangerous as the capital, especially in the country. Sonia was relieved at this decision- she wanted to take her son on archeological explorations and teach him some of her skills. In light of this rude awakening, his father decided that the boy needed to defend himself and started giving him weapon training.

As Vona made friends and progressed in her studies, she started accumulating friends and clients with country homes that she and her brother could use to visit each other. Things returned to a normal, happy, family life... sort of.

As Raemos matured on the ranch, he started to become aware of friction between himself and his father. With puberty impending and a desire for independence of a sort growing, Raemos started to take initiative. He did more work around the ranch, and he started to go on adventures that his father would not entirely have approved of, including archeological expeditions with his mother. One such adventure involved a young Khehora by the name of Jijikko, who he and his mother took to Taliuma. It was an experience he would not forget.

Nor would he forget the bright day in Serenia when, tasked to deliver a package on Vona's behalf, he was ambushed by Aedaun dragons who sought to utterly destroy them. He cast his first spell – a tome taught crippling miasma spell – and met two powerful feral khehora, a bonded khehora, and an Orderite Adept named Maeron Aredan. Maeron quickly became Raemos's hero with his adept swordplay and his confidence. They built up a friendship of sorts.

Experience made Raemos somewhat stronger, and he tried his own hand at hunting dragons on a later visit to Serenia, going after the smaller Ysali this time. After a brutal and tiring fight, he returned to find that, while he felt like he was more mature and responsible, his father's attitude was unchanged.

Slightly disheartened, Raemos returned to Eowyn, having made plans with Maeron for a future visit to the contident of Ayr. At the Taliuma coast, he met a large Khehora named Grrel, who he eventually hid in his family's barn. He had hoped to talk to her further, maybe learn more about the Khehora. However, an unexpected visitor caused him to delay his plans.

His mother's brother, Argos Valis of the Guardians, arrived to investigate what had happened to his sister. He found Raemos to be not only more than he had bargained for, but also very interesting. The next day, Raemos and his uncle went out hunting – a bonding experience, where Raemos showed himself to be capable and potentially very powerful. Argos left after tending to Raemos's wounds, but he left with a promise – he would vouch for Raemos if he joined the Guardians.

Raemos hadn't thought of doing that until his uncle had brought it up, but when he thought about it further, he knew. That was what he would do.

The next day, he was able to talk to the khehora in the barn, and she told him about the horrors of the Bond as they hunted the Kiandri dragons around the property. He vowed never to bond willingly to a khehora – aided of course by the fact that the khehora was rather big, toothy, and ferocious.

That day, though, he first started to use magic at will without a book. It was strange, feeling this darkness inside of him but, as it rampaged out of him and destroyed three dragons with one fell swoop, it felt right.

A few months later, he was back in Serenia, exploring the countriside before finding transport to Ayr to meet up with Maeron for some kind of wilderness hunt. Raemos was excited about hunting with his friend and role model, and whiled away his stay inbetween in Serenia as patiently as he could.

It was a fairly active stay: He wrote a letter to Aevah Avi, which he never intended to send and allowed to be shredded, he went on a hunt with his father and improved their relationship, expanded his knowledge of plant life, and met a very strange Khehora and discussed philosophy with her over lunch.

Finally, though, it was time to go to Ayr. The whole family went initially to view a beautiful nighttime display of falling stars, which awed Raemos with it's glory. The next day was the start of his and Maeron's adventure, which went well enough. However, Raemos's use of magic broke his sword, and he was left wondering if the sword was really his path.

Back at the ranch, Raemos's father surprised him with a visit from the renowned peddler, Arick Skyforge, who offered Raemos a choice of weapons. After some deliberation, Raemos chose the scepter and the path of the mage.

After an argument with his father, Mallew seemed to be at terms with the idea. That night, though, at dinner, he proposed an ultimatum: Raemos would move out on his next birthday. Despite Sonia's protests, Mallew did not relent.

On Raemos's 14th birthday, he left the ranch he called home and met up with his uncle Argos to travel to the Guardian HQ in Tukyere. Once there, he passed several trials and was made a member of the guild.

He soon realized that he had found his calling amidst the regimented order and heroism of the guild. He was sent on missions and he happily worked with others, followed orders, and grew to love his job. He even made friends of many sorts, including hybrids and Oblivionites, the sort of people who had made him uneasy only a short time before.

He also got to know Tukyere – its diverse people, its amazing market, and a gorgeous enchantress with a khehora mate, whos brother was his commanding officer. He began to feel more comfortable with life and himself, and decided this was good.

On a protection mission on Serenia, he met a young Orderite named Sueno and befriended her, acting as her personal guardian during the great dragon debacle. Unfortunately, he was called away by a family emergency – his father had been gravely injured by mysterious stone people that had been trespassing on their ranch.

He immediately made transport to Taliuma and met up with his sister. He secured a healer for his father – not a small feat due to the frequency of the attacks. He learned that the stone people were called the Mara, and were creations of Aevah Avi that had turned on their master and all other magescans. He soon got a good look at them himself, as he fought his way through the desert, his sister and various supplies in tow, to reach his home. Fortunately, a powerful orderite barbarian named Kadryn helped out, and he and his sister and his kargoth were able to make it home alive and mostly in once piece.

Sonia was very happy to have her children home, but Mallews condition was indeed deteriorating. As Raemos patrolled the property, stopped some Kargoth stampedes, and destroyed more of the rock monsters, a dark cloud of fear hung over the ranch, lifted only by the promised arrival of the healer, who saved Mallew's life.

It soon became clear that the whole area was in danger from the rock men, whose numbers were growing. Sonia, knowing of other ranches in the area, goes with Raemos to start helping them evacuate. They get attacked, and some of Raemos's guardian colleagues – a ysali healer named Rasha Kelom, an Oblivionite mage named Talon Sterben, and his sister Selza Sterben, a warrior and also Raemos's good friend.

They evacuate the Oblivionite family living on the ranch, and rode out back to the Medrol ranch. Other ranches were evacuated and soon the Medrols took their animals and joined them in a long caravan protected by guardians and fighters.

Raemos, in investigating a dragon threat, was ambushed by a diamond mara and nearly killed, only saved by his father. He awoke back in Tukyere, being tended by the Guardians. Soon, he was released and back on duty and, within minutes, had to protect the city from a Maran invasion.

Given a battlefield promotion and troops he knew well, he set about defending the town and bringing in refugees to the relative safety of the city walls. One such refugee was Junjie Moana, and his young daughter Keona.

With Junjie's assistance, they were able to take back the battlefield and end the fight. Because of Raemos's age and inexperience, his rank was called into question. Although not quite demoted, he was put on a probationary apprenticeship for a year to Corporal Talon Sterben, who had – over the course of his time with the Guardians – become a rival of Raemos' because of their differing religious views.

Feeling upset and cheated of his rightful rank, Raemos set out to prove he deserved it. He strove for greater and greater excellence, going above and beyond wherever he could. Even when his duties took him to Soldul – the land of his enemies – he behaved with as much professionalism as he could. It was a struggle, as his ideology conflicted with the people around him, but he soon realized that not all Oblivionites were soulless automatons bent on destruction – some were, very simply, the kind of ordinary folk that he saw every day in the town, and in the countryside of Serenia.

From that realization – and from a legend he heard about the soul-trapping powers of the Soldulan lake – he formed a new ideology about the Oblivionite race: That they could be saved. Not their army or the ones in the city, and certainly not the ones that followed Lord Draco, the avatar of Soudana... but the ordinary folk, the ones who had no other path available to them, whos only crime was that they were born to darkened blood and cursed to be robbed of their souls.

This opinion matured during his first tour there, and came into its own afterwards as Raemos was finally promoted to the rank of Corporal. It was during this time that he became romantically involved with his Orderite guildmate Cearlan Verhaan.

His life normalized – missions to protect caravans, clear out dragons and monsters, and generally Guardian things. He was happy – life was going well. Unfortunately, the romance was souring because of Cearlan's twin vices of jealousy and promiscuity, and Raemos found himself avoiding his lover while on duty. He regretted that later, when Cearlan was killed by a bandit, and he had to tell Cearlan's sister the news. She was devastated, and Raemos took time off to comfort her and help her with her job as an enchantress as her pregnancy progressed. He would have liked to hunt down the bandit but, alas, he could not.

After her half-khehora children were born, Raemos's life normalized again. He was sent on another tour of duty to Soldul to help repair a lakeside town damaged by the Mara, and into the mountains of the expanse to deal with dragon problems. He protected ships crossing to Serenia, and even met the famous Peisio scholar Esmeralda Voporian. He grew into a staid young man, but this uptightness had two main exceptions: his close friend, Selza Sterben, and his love life.

Raemos became promiscuous himself, not particularly minding in who's bedchambers he ended up in, so long as it was off duty and not harming anything official. To his surprise, one of his former lovers – an Oblivionite – ended up engaged to Selza. Although he couldn't help but be happy for her, he also started to wonder if there would be anybody for a freak like him. He doubted it.

He was promoted Sergent at around age 20, and it was around this time that his parents decided that they had had enough of trying to ranch with everybody else's sheron in the outskirts of Tukyere. Raemos accompanied them on their return to the old ranch, and stayed there with his friends. While there he suddenly became very ill and it was soon revealed that his wings and tail – his heritage as an Oblivionite – were coming in. It was a hard growth, and during this time, a mysterious Oblivionite woman came a calling. It was the middle of a sandstorm, so of course – being decent folk – they let her in. She helped tend to him, and whispered lullabys in his ear as he writhed in pain and eventually slept. She was not there when he awoke, and he was forced to deal with the new appendages that had sprouted from him – apprendages that marked him as the other, as not a part of his family.

Eventually, he decided that he had to leave, that he no longer belonged at the ranch. Despite Sonia's protests to the contrary, he left for the Guild HQ earlier than he intended...

Currently:
Having grown into an Oblivionite body, Raemos has to deal with the fact that he is not what he thinks he is, and get over himself enough to keep going. Fortunately he has a job to do, one that supports his needs, but where will that job take him? Only time will tell!

User ImageThoughts on the Great Engagement:
Raemos is a devout Serenite - ironically enough, he is more devout than many modern Orderites: he prays three times a day when possible and owns three different versions of her holy texts. No matter how much his body and magic insist that he is a pureblooded Oblivionite, his devotion is to the goddess of light and her people. With the psychology of an Orderite and the body of an Oblivionite, he is never completely at home among either people. He has managed thus far to mitigate his conflicted identity by simply delving into being a Guardian, and he is that first and foremost. To him, the uniform is more than mere cloth – it is an identity, a job, and a sacred duty that he must fullfill. Only when he is in uniform, on duty, is he ever completely comfortable with himself and what he feels he is.

As such, he always acts in a way that he considers to be “Guardian-like” and has a deep respect and professional appreciation for his guildmates, regardless of race... for in the guild, they are all the same.

Thoughts on the Races:

Orderites:
Raemos still thinks of Orderites as 'his' people, and he loves them. In fact, he idolizes them for what they, Lady Avi, and their goddess represent – Light and life and hope. Though he has seen that Orderites are capable of as much evil as anybody else, he still sees them as better, and he is generally favorable towards them, even when they might not be so towards him. They are his ideal, what he always strives for.

Oblivionites:
His body may be that of an Oblivionite, but he refuses to consider himself as 'one of them'. He does not hate them overall, however: he believes that there is a potential for good in each of them and that they simply must be shown the way. He believes that the ordinary country folk of Soldul, and the people he sees in the guild hall, are proof that there is hope for them.

However, he has no sympathy or love for Lord Draco, his dark city, or his army. They have fallen too far, and have done little, he feels, for their own people. These Oblivionites, he hates – they have become brutal war machines, little more than tools of their goddess, and though his duties as a Guardian prevent him from taking action against them, he hates them for the evil he feels they represent...

Dovaa:
Raemos is very neutral about the dragon people. He has no opinion of them for good or ill. They are, and they are not him.

He has many friends among them in the guild, and he appreciates their unique abilities.

Hybrids:
Raemos is very accustomed to hybrids, having been stationed in Tukyere for many years now. His mindset is, he has recognized, very much like a hybrid: his mind does not match his body. In Tukyere he is a freak among freaks, but his pure blood sets him apart and gives him uncomfortable stares. Still, he is perfectly fine with hybrids, though he is slightly uncomfortable around those with Oblivionite blood, especially if they have hollow eyes. In fact, many of the people who command him, befriend him, and who are under his command themselves are hybrids, and he has never had a problem with them.

Dragons:
Dragons are wild beasts that need to be hunted to keep them away from civilians. They are ferocious and dangerous. He doesn't take particular joy in killing them, but they are a menace that must be kept in check. All dragons really are to him are wild animals to either keep away from or kill: Not good or evil, not fun, and not sport.

Khehora:
Raemos has a deep respect for khehora, too much so to ever intentionally bond with one. He considers them to be noble, sentient beasts – both dangerous and intelligent. He is happy to converse with one, but he is also all right with fighting them when necessary.

Home:
Raemos's home is with the Guardians in Tukyere. He bunks there in the barracks, and has his own item chest and inventory.

The Medrol ranch out in the Malro desert, where his mother and father live, is a rough and tumble place able to support Kargoth, Sheron, and Kugel.

It is near enough to Tukyere and Taliuma to get help if needed. The family's house itself is a pleasant enough, if small, cottage.

Raemos's sister Vona lives in an apartment in Ashen City where she apprenticed (and now works as) a tailor. Its not bad, usually slightly messy but pleasantly furnished with a decent view of the street below.

User ImagePositive:

Grrel, Kiandri Khehorian: Grrel is a Khehora that Raemos has befriended. When he was young, she told him of the slavery of the bond, and he has never forgotten that. He has sworn never to take a bond. He hasn't seen her in a very long time and, when he remembers (which is every time he sees a khehora egg or a bonded), he hopes she is well...

Samael, Gaili Khehorian: Samael was one of the Khehora that rescued Raemos from the Aedaun dragons. Raemos got to witness this newly ascended Khehorian's vast control of earth magic. Raemos has since forgotton him.

Maeron Aredan, Orderite Warrior Expert (Guardian Corporal): An Orderite that Raemos looks up to, and even fawns over. His obvious skill and confidence (or swelled head) have made Raemos in awe of the older boy and follow him around like a puppy.

Lithian Bhvardis, Peisio Master: A Peisio Dovaa that Raemos met along with Jijikko in the Taliuma market. Although he was older, Raemos hoped that he had made his first friend close to his age, since they were both polite and shared interests in magic and enchanting, even if he was a bit turned off by the boy's easy wealth. Unfortunately, he hasn't had a chance to see him again, and has mostly forgotten the Dovaa, except for the occasional wondering about what he might be doing now.

Esmeralda Voporian, Peisio Dovaa Scholar Expert: A Peisio dovaa that Raemos met while guarding a ship during its passage to Serenia. He would have died if she hadn't pulled him out of the ocean, and he was very grateful to her.

Celieda Verhaan, Ayrala Dovaa/Orderite Enchanter (NPC): The stunningly beautiful hybrid sister of Cearlan Verhaan, Celieda is a renowned enchantress in Tukyere. She is a generally good person, but she also knows the power that her looks have on others. She is mated to the khehorian Isitar Naluuth and is fairly settled.

Neutral:

Jijikko, Gaili Khehora: Jijikko is a young Khehora that Raemos met on the edge of the ranch and later went shopping with and hasn't seen since.

Darke Frost, Bonded Aiskala Alikhora: Maeron's bonded. Appears to be wary of Raemos, for reasons Raemos cannot ascertain.

Kadryn Naokes Hornwood, Orderite Barbarian Master: An Orderite barbarian that saved him and Vona from a Mara attack, which was very nice of her to do...

Isitar Naluuth, Firani Khehorian (NPC): Isitar is a big, brash, khehorian who, though prone to jealousy, is surprisingly not often angry...

Cera Naluuth, Firani Khehora/1/4 Orderite/Dovaa child (NPC): Celieda and Isitar's daughter, Cera was named for her uncle Cearlan to honor his memory. An inquisitive toddler, she and her little claws are always into everything, fiddling with anything she can pick ...

Rena Naluuth, Firani Khehora/1/4 Orderite/Dovaa child (NPC): Celieda and Isitar's daughter, Rena was named after Raemos to represent the lost hope that her mother had that Cearlan would settle down with Rae. Rena is about as inquisitive and rambunctious as her sister, and especially likes to gnaw on things...

Negative:

Suluksati, Aedaun Khehorian: Suluksati was one of the Khehora that rescued Raemos from the Aedaun dragons. She was the first to step in, protecting him from their initial ambush. Later, they met and had an enlightening philosophical discussion. Unfortunately, despite their friendship, when next they met, she attacked and mauled him. He would not want to see her dead, but Raemos knows that she is a wild animal, and if he meets her again... he will do what he must.

Detraeus Doryu, Oblivionite Archer Expert: The bandit that killed Cearlan, Raemos would love to hunt him down. Alas, he doesn't know the man's name, or have the time to spare, so he satisfies himself with knowing that the bandit was just another Oblivionite, one too far gone to save...

Family:

Mallew Medrol, Orderite Barbarian Adult (NPC): Father. Raemos looks up to him and wants to be a powerful and just warrior like him some day. The man has (barely) swallowed his pride and his prejudice and raised Raemos like his own son, and Raemos is willing to repay the debt a thousand times over. Of course, there are times when Mallew wonders if he shouldn't have killed the little oblivionite infant, or if what he is doing is right- then he remembers the looks on his wife and daughter's faces when they found Rae, and he knows he made the right choice.

Sonia Valis, Orderite Archaeologist Adult (NPC): Mother. Raemos loves her and has always hung onto her stories of times gone by. She has given him a passion for exploration and a capacity for compassion that, hopefully, will serve him well. She is a woman of energy and passion, only just now fully returned after the ordeals of pregnancy.

Vona Medrol, Orderite Tailor Adult (NPC): Sister. Vona is 6 years older than Rae and works as a tailor in Ashen City. She is very social has, over the years she's been there, made quite a few social connections and is starting to build a client base. She has the potential to at least be a part of something successful. Rae adores her, and she him. She passes on updates on his progress to Aevah Avi without his knowledge, and has – of late – become very worried about him and his safety.

Fellow Guardians:

Argos Valis, Orderite Warrior Adult (NPC, Guardian Freelancer): A member of the Guardians and Sonia Valis's older brother, Argos has taken a special interest in his nephew, seeing him as a possible recruit. Raemos is, initially, wary of the man, but he appears to actually be pretty decent.

Nohr Miris, Aiskala Dovaa/Orderite Warrior Adult (NPC, Guardian Captain): Nohr Miris is a woman that demands respect. Closer to her Dovaa side, she is able to pass as a fullblood, and is very sensitive to being called a hybrid. There is talk that she may be promoted to Lieutenant soon, and it is generally agreed that few deserve it more.

Cearlan Verhaan, Orderite Warrior Adult (NPC, Guardian Sargent): Cearlan Verhaan was born on Serenia, but when his father fell in love with a dovaa woman, they left for Tukyere. Cearlan couldn't care either way. He is gorgeous, like his half sister, and he knows it and has a reputation as somewhat of a playboy. Despite this and his carefree nature, he has managed to rise in ranks and even took Raemos as a lover. Unfortunately, he died in a bandit attack...

Selza Sterben, Oblivionite Warrior Adult (NPC, Guardian Sargent): Selza and her brother Talon were Taliuma raised and orphaned when their parents, both mercenaries, died in a skirmish. After they were sent to family in Soldul, Selza reacted by becoming very cheerful, perhaps excessively so. Even now, it is hard to phase her.
She followed her brother into the Guardians and soon found that working with Talon was aggravating as hell. She is a genially-regarded member of the Guardians and a good friend of Raemos'. She is to be married soon to another Oblivionite of the Guardians.

Talon Sterben, Oblivionite Mage Adult (NPC, Guardian Sargent): Selza and her brother Talon were Taliuma raised and orphaned when their parents, both mercenaries, died in a skirmish. After they were sent to family in Soldul, Talon reacted by becoming heavily religious, worshipping Soudana to an extreme. He prays more than any Oblivionite they know, and he chose the path of a Mage purely out of devotion. He joined the Guardians because he felt in tune with their values, despite them being an Orderite founded guild. He loathes Raemos for his Serenite ways, and wishes his sister wouldn't keep such company.

Rasha Kelom, Ysali Dovaa Adult (NPC, Guardian Specialist): Rasha Kelom is a laid-back Ysali healer who has a pet Lryu that he adores. He provides and produces medicines for his troop and is generally not a front-line fighter. Most think he's a little strange.

Maever Sola, Orderite Mage (NPC, Guardian Private): Maever Sola is of good Serenian peasant stock, from a rich tradition of farming. She chose to enter the Guardians as a mage to attempt to get more to her name than that, and her transfer to the Tukyere branch is anything but pleasant to her. She wants power and ability, but isn't particularly capable of getting either. Whether she rises in the ranks or remains a grunt is up for question, however, since she definitely tries. Sort of.

Rama Sogrof, Kiandri Dovaa/Orderite Archer (NPC, Guardian Private): Rama almost passed for a Dovaa, and even lived in the Plane for a time, but as he grew older, his hair lightened to a very un-dovaa color and he was picked on a lot. Soon, the truth of his mother's liason with an Ordeite became known, and they were exiled. Rama is energetic – perhaps a little too much so – and paranoid enough to be considered 'twitchy'. Fortunately, he is able to keep himself under control and not hurt anybody, and has figured out how to make his arrows quite powerful. It is very clear, though, that he is not leader material, and this is just fine with him.

Nagmir Pattan, Oblivionite Mage/Orderite Barbarian (NPC, Guardian Private): With Nagmir Pattan, it is hard to tell what he is. His muddy skin could easily be Dovaa, and his colorful hair could easily mark him as part Orderite. He has no wings to summon, but he has the gleaming sockets of an Oblivionite.
The product of an Oblivionite mother and an Orderite father, he was shuffled between them for a long time, each one not wanting to deal with the abomination they had produced. Eventually, he was sent to an orphanage and, to escape that life, joined the Guardians. Generally shy and unassuming, he is a fairly pleasant young man, happy to offer help to an ally in need.

Mielia Sensira, Orderite Archer (NPC, Guardian Private): Mielia is from rural Serenian stock. Her parents, both ranchers, decided to move to Eowyn and set up a Sheron and Dalak ranch there. She joined the Guardians after witnessing members of the Guild fight off Khehora raiders. Although originally in the Taliuma branch, she was transferred to Tukyere when that branch suffered losses while protecting the Hybrid city from bandits, and has found that she is quite at home there. Mielia is prejudiced towards hybrids and the other races, but it is more ignorance than actual feeling: She simply doesn't know much about them. The only race she dislikes enough to be termed 'hate' is the Khehora, and then that is only because they are violent animals to her.

Apago Skywing, Gaili Dovaa (NPC, Guardian Private): Apago was always mistaken for a boy, and still is to this day, but she is very much female. Her family has a huge tradition of joining the Guardians, and she was happy to follow suit. Although not particularly ambitious, Apago wants to make a name for herself in the Guardians. Cheerful and a bit silly, Apago is a popular, if sarcastic, battlemate.

Perylight Somal, (¼) Firani Dovaa/Orderite Warrior (NPC, Guardian Private): A second generation Hybrid, Perylight grew up in Tukyere and has seen the outside persecution of his city firsthand. He joined the Guardians to help protect his home and family, and is of the belief that nobody else is as dedicated as he is. Bitter and complaining and quick to chastise others, Perylight fails to see his own faults and has few friends.

Tomes:
Crippling Miasma (Dark)
    Lafahz Gaolem
The caster's hands or weapon briefly expel a thick fog that settles on the opponent causing them to drop 1 damage tier (50 to 25 or 25 to 10, etc) on their next successful hit. Can be used twice per battle.

    ENG Cost: 25

Shadow Puppet (Dark)
    Illithir Darikkum

This tome instructs the user in manipulating their own shadow. Though the shadow is incapable of doing harm or grasping anything physical, the spell can be used for either amusement or a tactical advantage on a stealth mission.

    Notes:
Adept Stage: Manipulate only your own shadow.
Expert Stage: Learn to manipulate up to three additional shadows simultaneously, including your own.

Levitation (Astral)
    Fupanonai

Levitation is quite a useful skill for the peoples of Magesc. This tome contains a handy guide to mastering the art.

Chapter 1 covers basic control and offers tips on how to handle objects as heavy as a small sized canine (10lbs or 4.5kg). Chapter two expands a caster's skills allowing them more finesse and the ability to control multiple objects at a time as well as heavier things than before (200lbs or 90kg). Chapter 3 covers how to magically support the levitating of massive and unwieldy objects like horses, logs, and boulders (840lbs or 381kg).

    ENG Cost: 10, 25, 40

Reflection Shield (Astral)
    Lufunay Maau

This short manual teaches the user how to create a solid shield of magic which reflects all incoming magical or physical damage once. Once cast, the shield remains up until a successful attack connects and the spell cannot be cast again that battle. Damage returned to attacker is their original damage. Opponent's block/ward do not apply.

In a multiple vs one situation reflection shield will only reflect the attack of the first opponent to land a hit, all other successful opponent's hits that round will land as normal.

Can be used in RP's to summon a shiny shield.

    ENG Cost: 40

Seeing Double (Light)
    Xiofu

Create a somewhat blurry illusion made of light partially over your body making there appear to be two connected versions of you. Lowers enemy accuracy by 10 points for two turns. Can only be used once per encounter. (Cannot be stacked with 'Blinding Light')

Can be used in RP's out of combat as well.

    ENG Cost: 25

Basic Conjuration (Conjuration)
    Webilu Luonilu
A basic conjuration spell. This is a must-have before any other conjuration book. One must first master the basics before moving forward with more difficult incantations. This conjuration spell brings forth a small familiar whom looks adorable and is killed by a single damaging attack. This creature does nothing to aid you in battle and is specifically meant to bring joy and happiness (as well as a basic understanding of conjuration magic) to the caster and their allies.

    ENG Cost: 10

Skills:

Pressure
Raemos' magic is very easily solidifiable, and so many of his spell uses of magic take the form of crushing forces. He likes to shape this magic into fanciful forms, such as feathered wings, claws, or maws.

Shadow Grab
Raemos's magic, because of its solidifiable nature, is very sticky. He can connect his magic and shadow to other shadows and use that to move people or objects. It is best used to bring things together, not apart, as the magic wants to be with itself.

Transmute Slash
Because of Raemos's intensive studies in magic and his obsession with wanting to understand the light magic denied to him, he has figured out how to extend the power, reach, and effectiveness of his light-enchanted sword with his own magic. Using his wand and sword in conjunction with each other, he can use his magic to project the sword's magic out in an arc that he can literally fire off as a ranged weapon. He cannot do this too many times without letting the sword 'rest', otherwise the enchantment on it will be destroyed.

Enchanted Goggles: Raemos, though he does not need his disguise any more, still carries magic goggles because they are very useful for keeping things out of his eye sockets.

Zephyr Cape: Made by Raemos's sister, this cape is fine, white, and beautiful. Raemos wears it whenever he can, and it goes well with his uniform.

Shimmering Pearl Plate: A gift from Aevah Avi, sent in honor of his Mara kills, Raemos treasures this armor as if it was his child, and takes ridiculously good care of it.

Arm and Feet Wraps: A holdover from the days when Raemos wrapped himself in bandages to hide his skin, the wraps protect his arms and shins from damage and attacks.

Gaurdian Uniform: Raemos is very fond of his blue-and-white Guild uniform, and wears it with pride.

Enchanted Light Sword: Despite being a dark mage, Raemos loves the light. Being able to attack with a sword enchanted with its magic is the next best thing.

Imprinted Wand: The intricately carved ivory tusk-like weapon is still awkward in Raemos's hands, but he is beginning to love it, bit by bit, for the power it provides.

Spellbook: Raemos carries a spellbook to remind himself of his various magical tricks and the tomes he's learned thus far. It is very neatly written and informative.

Journal and writing supplies: Raemos writes and draws in his journal frequently, recording his life and its events carefully. Occasionally, he might show off the drawings inside, but never the entries.

Letter Supplies: Raemos writes frequent letters home, and always has a few envelopes ready to be sent.

Survival supplies: Water, rations, money... things no desert traveller could go without.

[] Raemos and Maeron have an epic arc upcoming, including a battle, an adventure, and such.

[] Raemos needs someone to ship him with. Though promiscuous, i would like him to settle down with someone eventually. Preferably at least partially Orderite. Friends-with-benefits relationships also welcome!

[] Battles!

[] Guardian stuff! Any excuse to be a hero!

A funny Story about Silx - Solo 1028 words

Raemos lay in his bed, aching a little from the fight of the day. He hadn't realized it but, between being knocked down by the Silx and tripped by the dragon, he'd actually banged himself up pretty bad. His poor arm was an achy mess of misery, but he'd live. His brain was going though- he couldn't sleep. He had to- simply had to- get his thoughts out on paper, as his mother had taught him to.
He picked up his writing table and his pen- a gift from his mother for his birthday, his paper- also a gift, and some envelopes- bought in the city on his last trip.
His mother had always told him to keep a journal, but he preferred letters. They were so dynamic, so alive, and it was a way to talk to his sister. He wrote one every day or therabouts, and sometimes he sent them, sometimes he didn't. Sometimes, he just kept them in an old box and brought them with him when he visited her. He wished she would write more often, but Raemos knew that Vona was busy becoming a proper adult with a job and all. He understood, and was grateful for whatever time and love she spared her little insignificant freak of a brother.
He stretched his aching arm and his slightly scraped hand and began to write the letter for the day.

Today I saw a dragon. Dad says its a ysali, and that was why it was able to wrap plants around us. He said it was a lucky thing that I wasn't poisoned! I think so too. I wouldn't want to be poisoned!

That maybe wasn't the way to start it, but Raemos couldn't think of another way to do it. The dragon was the most important part of the day, after all. He sighed.

Oh Vona. I'm totally useless sometimes! I took care of the ranch all by myself for a month, so why could I not take care of a nest of Silx? I swear, Vona, I'm just clumsy. I'll never be as good as father. He still says he'll train me though, even after I failed to catch the dragon and the silx. Actually, its kind of a funny story. If it amuses you, I'll at least have been of some use!

That was true, now that he thought about it. He'd have to write the story out extra funny. Then the whole thing wouldn't have been a complete failure! Just... mostly a failure.

So a few silx got into the barn and were nibbling away at the food supply. You know how dad's always busy with the big things, especially the things I can't do because I can't fly, right? Well, Marco, the big bull- you remember him? Was sick and needed treatment, so he had me take care of the silx in the barn. There were a whole bunch of them, Vona! I tried to kill them, but I ended up chasing and getting chased and oh it was a mess! I was running around and waving my sword like a stick and they were dodging it with nary a thought! I swear, Vona, they were laughing at me.
Anyway, they got me onto that big beam and lured me out into the middle and then they pounced! Now that I think about it, I don't even know how they got me up there... They're clever little critters, aren't they, Silx? They must have worked me over there bit by bit... Anyway, I guess they were playing with me, when I toppled over and fell! Thankfully dad was there to catch me. But can you imagine how ridiculous I looked? A boy of 11, waving arounn a sword, and then landing in dad's arms like some wee babe. I probably was covered with hay too!

Raemos grinned. That should have her laughing a little. He remembered pretending to use hay as a wig while she looked on laughing. Was that only a few years ago? It felt like an eternity ago!

And then we got to the dragon.
See, I was out earlier fetching a runaway calf, when it was set upon and, probably, eaten by a dragon! Have you ever seen a dragon before Vona? I've not! It was scary, with sharp teeth and claws.
Well, dad and I went out to take it down, but we didn't manage it... it used its magic and got away. I thought you might be interested in some of the grass it used, though!

Raemos took out one of the magically twisted knots of grass from the brush at the little oasis, the plants intertwined far more intricately than nature or his own hands would allow. He'd cut it as a souvenir, and he had just realized that it would be a great thing to send along with the letter. He tucked it into the envelope so he wouldn't forget.

I'm sending some to you here. I hope it keeps! Maybe you'll come up with a new design from it! Then you'll be famous! Wouldn't that be excellent?
You shouldn't worry either, I know you are now but you shouldn't. Dad and I are allright. He says I did just fine for a new apprentice, and that we'll keep trying to make sure we've run it off properly.

We're hoping to visit you soon. What would you like me to bring you when we're next there?

Love, you'r adoring brother, Raemos.

He signed the letter, dated it, and slipped it into the envelope and the box. Whether he sent it or not depended on whether he remembered when the courier came by. Sometimes, he didn't.

Mind at ease, he put away his writing things, shuttered his lantern, and went to bed, wondering what the new day would bring....
Perhaps some form of silx extermination? He owed those furry little imps a prank of his own! He smiled, almost playfully. He didn't have to kill them, just trap them and remove them. He'd just have to see what tomorrow would bring, and hope that it was success in some way.
