Rolling for Alkarai~

x3 Song of Stone!

• 1 - 80: Drops nothing.
• 81 - 100: Item grant Song of Stone - A dark, marble-like fragment of stone, large enough to fill a grown man’s palm and perpetually warm to the touch; it looks as though it were cut from live volcano, though it does not burn. When rubbed, its heat fills a chilled body like a physical stream of energy, capable of nipping back even the fiercest of chills. Though it has no other apparent special properties on its own, its jagged edge on one side and dark ethereal shroud seem to suggest it is born of magic, and might combine with something…

Wasn't sure where Rae would go at night. XP If he spent it with his family, then Mae can just be talking to Darke, and Rae can just meet up with them there. If Rae slept somewhere in the same vicinity as my guys, then Mae can be talking to him. Whichever you prefer. XP

Admittedly, Mae hadn't thought he'd be that impressed by any amount of stars falling from the sky. They were way up there, and he was down on Magesc, so why did they matter? And seeing them hadn't really changed his opinion. Pretty much the only thing he enjoyed about it was that he - Maeron Aredan - had been present for a once-in-a-lifetime event. The novelty of it was worth more than any number of things falling through the sky.

On the other hand, Darke would've loved nothing more than to appreciate the beauty of it. Maybe he would have been able to marvel a bit more if he wasn't painfully concerned about the lad they'd had to share the endeavor with. The Alihora understood that Mae liked and actually appreciated the kid's company. Darke did not. If it was up to him, he would've been perfectly content to enjoy the sight with his Mae. Just his Mae. No one else.

Alas, that was not the case. Like many of the travelers, they'd spent the night on the mountainside, staring up at the sky. Unlike most, Mae had had the comfortable bed of Alihora to sleep on. When the sun creaked up over the horizon, the Orderite boy sleepily opened his eyes and sat up. Mae yawned and stretched, his bones creaking in disapproval from rising too early after a late night. He rubbed a bit of sleep from his eyes with the back of his palm. "Mmm, we're not planning on leaving today, are we?" He asked a bit groggily.

Raemos would have liked to spend more time with his famiily. He'd spent a lot of time at the observatory, and then he and Vona had gone off to have dinner and watch the starts together, giving their parents some privacy. Which, considering the way that Mallew and Sonia had been looking at each other, they needed.

He'd learned a lot about falling star events just for the occasion, and had regurgitated that knowledge to his sister, even though he knew it was probably too wordy and in-depth and history-y for her. She'd been patient with him, and he had definitely enjoyed her company. But he could also tell that she would have liked to have brought her current boy-thing with her and be stargazing with him. Maybe, Raemos had thought uncharitably, instead of her freakish brother...

Probably not, though. Vona was a better sister than that. Still, she left him after a while to go find said boything - he didn't know which one this was. Kyle? Amarin? Samson? There was somewhat of a turnover.

He didn't go back to the Orderite camp, not wanting to interfere with whoever the boy was, or with his parents. He knew how his father felt about him being around large groups of orderites, and he understood. He feared discovery. He'd brought a sleeping bag, and his father had suggested the hybrid camp as a safe place, in a moment of filial concern. Bu Rae hadn't been comfortable with them, so he had slept alone, watching the starfall overhead.

Between the hard stone, unfamiliar location, and being alone, He had not slept very well anyway, but at least brilliant raining nights more than made up for his insomnia. He was also excited about setting out with Maeron, and that didn't help.

Eventually, he gave up and decided to go on his morning walk, perhaps a bit earlier than usual searching for Maeron. The older boy had said that he wouldn't be in the Orderite camp, so Raemos looked along the mountainside, tightening his cloak against the cold dew. Eventually, he recognized, at a distance, the light-feathered bulk of the bonded khehora. He made his way over, adjusting his goggles, making sure they covered his disgustingly empty sockets.

"We were." he said approaching, his smile apologetic, "Or did I get that wrong?"

Mae started at the sound of the other boy's voice, not expecting to hear a response from anyone except Darke. His feathered companion still had his head resting on the ground, but he cracked one sky blue eye open to peer at the approaching intruder. Mae turned to glance at Raemos with no small amount of confusion, wondering who would be up and about at this early time of morning. The sun barely cast its light upon them, and the crags overhead projected dark and looming shadows. But at the sight of the youngster heading toward them, the Orderite grinned. "Morning, Rae." He called amicably. Darke just rolled his eyes in annoyance.

With another loud yawn, Mae pushed himself to his feet, dusting off any pebbles and debris from his pants that had attached to him during the night. While Darke huffed and brooded for a few extra minutes, the Orderite strode over to his friend. "The festival is over, so I bet everyone is leaving today." Glancing around, Mae noticed that many of those who'd spent the night closer to the stars had already packed and departed, leaving the cliff more sparse than when he'd fallen asleep. A few stranglers still remained snoozing nearby, but even the laziest of them seemed to be rousing with the morning light.

Mae shrugged. "Once everyone is gone, we'll have a much easier time exploring the mountains. We could hang around for a while, just to see what it's like up here without all kinds of other people around."

"Likely so." said Raemos, peering carefully down the cliff face to watch a few travellers leaving the valley even as they spoke, "A few left last night. I suppose they had places to be, but it was a shame: They missed some of the better parts of the starfall. Right at the end, like a Grande Finale..." he drew away from the tantalizing danger of the edge, "Although, I could argue that it hasn't quite ended yet. There are a few stray falling stars, or whatever they are. Just not..." he smiled, "Festival level."

He turned back to Maeron and saluted. "Up to you, sir!" he said, half amiably, half serious, "We could leave before, or we could leave after, or during. Your choice, sir. I will follow your lead." And, honestly, following aside, Raemos didn't have a preference either way. He could understand trying to catch up to a few people and say goodbye (His family was travelling with a group that his father would rather he not meet, and he had said goodbye to them the night before) or potentially guard them in dangerous areas. He could also understand waiting, waking up, eating, and then going off into the ever-windy silence of Ayr.

Again. Up to Mae, the big, strong, Adept.

Mae looked up at the sky, squinting past the glaring light of the sun. Even if there were stars still falling, it seemed unlikely that anyone would be able to see them in the encroaching daytime, with the sun's rays beaming straight at them. Wasn't Ayr usually cloudy, anyway? Two clear days in a row... Clear enough to see stars. That had to be strange, right? He shrugged. He didn't care, either way. The stars could fall and people could gawk at them all they wanted. He was sure it was the same show every time it happened, anyway. And if Ayr wanted to break ranks and be sunny, more power to it.

The Orderite glanced off in the other direction, toward the path that led down toward the merchant stalls. Of all people, the merchants were probably the ones doing all the packing right now, since they probably had the most to load. Still, if there was any chance of finding breakfast down there... "Let's go see if we can scrabble up a snack. I don't think Ayr is going anywhere." He patted his companion on the back, and with a loud sigh, Darke rose to all fours, stretched out his limbs like a cat, then licked his maw. He shook out his feathers, then made a point of shooting Rae a grumpy, annoyed look before trotting off down the path.

Raemos laughed. "Wouldn't that be interesting" he said, following along politely after Darke - who still disliked him, it seemed - "If these mountains suddenly... moved." It would also be terrifying, but in that way that Raemos would want to see it for himself. Literally moving mountains?

If he had eyes, he would have rolled them. He was hungry and his mind wandered of its will to strange places when he had not eaten. He would rather it wander under his control. Moving mountains. What a thought.

He looked around at the merchant's tents, sniffing at the air. The smell of flatcakes reached his nose and he brightened hopefully. He hadn't had them or their like in a long time, not since his mother had tried to make them for him and Vona. His mother was not a bad cook, and even though the flat bready buttery doughy creations had seemed a bit brown and burnt, and maybe a bit dry, he had loved them.

He searched the slowly disappearing tents before he found them. "Ah!" he said, pointing, "There." A lone cook made flatcakes, setting them beside him to sell. Also next to him was some fruit jam.

As he noticed this, the smell of frying meat reached his nose. Bacon?! his mouth watered. There were probably other meats nearby too. Perfect!

Raemos liked breakfast - it was a good time of morning for him. And he saw no reason why he couldn't have a decent one before going off on grand hunting adventures.

That is.

If Maeron was stopping here.
"Sir? Here?"

Mae blinked and glanced over his shoulder at Rae in confusion. "Erm, yeah. I guess it would be." He shrugged. But... Mae bet that if a bunch of powerful Gaili got together, they could move any mountains they wanted to! Maybe to protect them from a flood or an earthquake or-

'Don't encourage him!' Darke hissed in annoyance, sending an icy blue glare straight through the Orderite's skull and into the inner workings of his mind. 'He's obviously messed up enough without you making it worse! I say we should just leave him and forget we ever saw him. He's suspicious, Mae! Don't you think?'

The fuchsia-haired boy just couldn't understand Darke's utter fixation on his hatred of this boy. Even seeing into the Alihora's thoughts yielded nothing but suspicions and hesitant inklings. No proof of anything! It was clear enough that Rae wasn't dangerous or evil. Just... different. Mae shook his head. 'If you'd take the time to be nice to him, I think you'd find that you liked him too. Just try and be good. And keep your thoughts to yourself if you're going to be so negative, yeesh!'

Darke's scowl only deepened. He huffed and turned his nose up at the two-leggers to show his displeasure before trouncing ahead and into the thinning number of stalls.

Mae shrugged and continued along at Rae's side. Darke wouldn't wander far. And whether he liked it or not, his thoughts and emotions still brushed against his Bonded's. Mae doubted he'd even get out of shouting range before he turned back. So instead of focusing on the Aiskala's raging emotions, he instead followed Rae to the source of a particularly tasty and inviting smell. Living out in the woods alone usually meant that Mae was in charge of breakfast. While he occasionally had the urge to prepare an actual meal, usually he just had cereal while Darke hunted. Having someone else prepare food was a real treat. So... maybe he could splurge a little on a tasty meal. Mae grinned. "Yeah, let's dig in!"

Raemos was happy to pay for his share, and mae's as well, using his skills at bartering, honed over many market visits, to get them a good price. He smiled, satisfied as he managed to get them both large and delicious pancake breakfasts for an affordable price. Really, it wasn't much lower, but the point was not how much he actually paid, it was how much he would have paid. This price was fine. The other price was not.

This skill would really impress Maeron, he thought. He really wanted to impress the older boy, and make sure they stayed friends. Friends were, he had discovered, nice. He was sure that large plates of pancakes were a good bribe... though... Mae was already his friend?

The large plate of pancakes, though, couldn't hurt anything.

Raemos frowned, his good mood delayed, as Darke huffed, stuck hi snose up at them, and left their presence. Was the Khehora upset? Rae could see no reason why that would be so...

"Is something the matter...?" he asked, his gaze following Darke with concern. "Is he allright?"

He's probably just off getting his own meal thought Raemos Not an issue But he was still worried...

'You're really going to pass up pancakes?' Mae shot through the Bond as he took his first bite. He hummed in satisfaction, passing the delectably sweet and welcome flavor through the link he shared with his Alihora. Darke would only get an inkling of it, of course, but that was enough to make his mouth water. "Hm?" he blinked as he heard Rae's voice, and turned to face the younger lad. "Oh, he's fine. He's just, er.. grouchy in the morning." Or something like that. Mae grinned and sheepishly rubbed the back of his neck.

"Anyway, thanks for this! We could've paid for our own. You really didn't have to!" Mae said, beaming at his friend. he probably had more of a stable income than Rae, but he decided not to bring it up.

He was about to finish off one of the delicious treats when he heard the flutter of wings. he smirked to himself and ignored the sound to the best of his ability. 'Finally seeing things my way, huh? I knew you couldn't resist-'

'Mae!'

Something heavy landed next to him. Something that Mae didn't have to even see to realize it wasn't Darke. He leaped up and moved away, dropping his plate of pancakes and diving to block Rae as the monstrous-sized alkara began to peck at the remains. Maeron blinked in surprise as two other large birds soon followed it. They had to be the largest alkarai he'd ever seen. Certainly large enough to hold their own against the few humans that remained in the mountains. The smell of strange food must have drawn them. Mae turned to the younger boy near him. "Rae, we have to be certain they don't attack anyone else for food or sport or whatever. Are you with me on this?"
