The pomegranate is a strange fruit with a long history, spanning the human world and that of the Gods. The fruit was first cultivated in the eastern lands of Persia, Iran, cultivated as far as India to southeast Asia to the northeastern parts of Africa. In 1769, the pomegranate was brought to California, where it currently has the highest growth rate along side Arizona.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. Each pomegranate has 600 seeds; the many seeds and the red pulp around them are the edible parts of the fruit, although the pomegranate's sudden popularity has also made the juice from the seeds highly sought after. The fruit itself is covered in a thick red skin, generally growing to be larger than an orange but smaller than a grapefruit. The plant is very hearty, able to withstand drought and chilly weather to about -10°C, making dryer climates with little wetland ideal for growth.

The name "pomegranate" is derived from Latin, translating literally into pomum ("apple") and granatus ("seeded"). The name translation is common in many languages (German: Granatapfel, "seeded apple"). Some say the root of the name lies with the Egyptians and Semitic. In fact, the history of the pomegranate is said to originate from around 1000 BC!

Eating the pomegranate is no easy task, for it can be very messy; the juice is also known to stain, so don't get it on your clothes! The easiest way to procure the seeds is to cut the fruit open with a knife and place it in water, seperating the seeds from the white interior with ease (as the seeds will sink and the extra flesh will float). The seed is sweet, but can range from tangy to sour if the fruit isn't ripe. Not all people use the fruit for its sweet seeds; even today, you can find traditional recipes in the eastern cultures made with a spice from the pomegranate's seeds. For years, countless cultures have used the pomegranate for many purposes, such as making a juice, a wine, a seasoning, mixing a broth, as a marinade, a glaze, and a jam.

The Gods also made use of this humble little fruit. In Greek mythology (and arguably the most well known version), Persephone, the daughter of Demeter (Goddess of Harvest) and Zeus, was abducted into the Underworld by Hades himself to be his wife. Her mother mourned her loss, and thus all green things on earth ceased to grow, and died. Zeus couldn't allow the world to suffer so, and demanded that Hades return Persephone. While the stolen girl neither ate nor drank during her captivity (as any food or drink had in the underworld would bind a person there for eternity), Hades tricked her into eating four pomegranate seeds, thus ensuring that four months out of the year, she would take her throne in the underworld as Queen. This has earned the fruit the name, Food of the Dead.

    Name: Crystal Beckett
Age: Appears to be in her early twenties.
DOB: June 22 - Cusp of Gemini and Cancer
    Height: Approximately 5'6"
Weight: 115 lbs, give or take.
Hair: Raven-wing black, nearly to her waist when straight (naturally curled to her mid-back), although she's rarely ever seen without her signature ringlets (which puts the length at about her collar bone).
Eyes: Steel blue, although they're more grey than blue.
Ethnicity: Crystal is a mix of the Midori equivalent of Irish and French.
Distinguishing features: Other than being slender and borderline dainty, she almost always seems to be wearing a smile.

Personality: Crystal is extremely kind, almost to a fault. She seems to open up a little around her parents, particuarly her father. She is very easy going, mindful of her manners and sweet. She only seems to speak her mind around those she trusts and cares for, otherwise keeping her personal opinions to herself. Unknown to many is how hard she is on herself - she struggles to be more than what is expected of her, although she dosen't always know just what that is. Raised to cater to nobility, she can be painfully prim and proper when the situation calls for it. She is uncanny in her perceptions and is rather intelligent, despite her flowery and carefree appearance. Due to her work and upbringing, she doesn't really know a whole lot of how she's supposed to be, not realizing there's more to herself than working and helping others.

Bio: Crystal comes from generations of Midori's oldest floral family, the Becketts. She was raised as an only child with no hardship or suffering, being a relatively normal young woman despite her awareness of class and social status. From the age of ten, Crystal helped cater floral arrangements and deliveries for noble parties and get togethers; at age sixteen, she was successful in managing the out of store services. Due to a fateful meeting with a young noble in this passed June, the catering services were stopped, although what happened that day is not something she speaks of. The new cafe opening has left her with little work to do, although she often finds enough around home to keep herself busy.

Likes: Singing, music, taking walks, cooking, thoughtful gifts, small animals.
Dislikes: Pants, conflict, spiders, lack of control, soggy veggies, fake floral scents.
Guilty Pleasures: Painting, ceramic work, dancing, touch.

    Family:
Suzanne "Rose" Beckett: Mother - once a noble, but has long since left her title behind.
Samuel Beckett: Father - a well-known poet, although he keeps it quiet.
Melody Beckett: Aunt - works as a seamstress.
Brandon Beckett: Uncle - Samuel's younger brother, a successful cartographer.
Veronica Beckett: Cousin - 5 years old, adores Crystal.
Edward Beckett: Cousin - 8 years old, pretends to be rebellious but adores Crystal.

    To Kaoru

    To Crystal

.°. A Beautifully Crafted Hairclip - "Atop the clip itself rests a small, polished silver crescent moon that glitters slightly. Dangling from the moon on chains of miniature diamonds are tiny, clear orbs. Each of them are approximately the same size, but all just a bit smaller than the moon. It's obvious that they are the stars to the moon and the diamond chains are the beams of moonlight that could easily be woven around small locks of hair. The stars are most curious though, as the orbs are clear! Didn't most people represent stars with glimmering diamonds or golden foil?"

There's pixie dust in the orbs! When Crystal wears it, the pixie dust glow like genuine stars in the sky. Worn only for Qadir, otherwise kept in a silk ribbon, tucked by her bosom.

.º. An Ornate Ring "A silver ring with an Arabic script language engraved around its band and with a single black stone set upon it. It’s clearly very old, but its polishing job makes it glint as if it had just been bought from a very expensive store. The black gem holds hints of blue shifting through it and on either side are tiny cut diamonds. The whole thing is small and dainty." A gift from Qadir, found on the other side of the world; Arabic reads "Eternally Bound"; worn on her right ring finger or on a chain as a necklace.

.º. A Silver Bracelet - "A plain silver bracelet, but there are four of them wrapped about each other and like the other things [Qadir had] given to her, they have a bit of an older feel about them." A gift from Qadir, found in the sands of his homeland; worn on her right wrist.

.º. A Gown of Royal Purple - "A soft purple dress with a full skirt and deep purple silk layered under it. White lace flowers are woven atop the bust and there are other white lace flowers along the edge of the dress. It is fairly nice, but it isn't so over the top that she couldn't wear it on days that she just felt like dressing up." A birthday gift from Qadir.

.°. An Elaborate Jacket - Described as "looking most expensive and well prepared for special occasions." Irene had Crystal hold his coat at one point, and forgot it; when she tried to return it later, he insisted she keep it.

Two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a lot of flowers.

The house that the Beckett's built is constructed of sturdy wood, treated yearly for weather effects.
The front porch leads into a modest foyer, with a sitting room angled on the right side and a hallway
on the left. The sitting room is archaic, with old pictures and artifacts from Becketts passed; it is adorned
with several bookcases and overstuffed armchairs that have been well loved and used. The hallway
first leads into Kaoru's room with a bathroom inset; further down is Crystal's room and bathroom.
Across the hall from the bedrooms is a single door that remains locked almost at all times.

Beyond the foyer is the dining room, complete with old oak table and matching chairs.
There is no wall to seperate the dining room from the living room beyond it, which is simply
compiled of a love seat and two stuffed chairs with a coffee table between them. The highlight
of the living room is the stone fireplace, beside which is a door leading to the back patio. To
the right of the dining room is a half wall that seperates it from the kitchen, which is the most
modern room in the house. Solid wood counters, cabinets and an island to boot.

The house is gated with a white fence and a plethora of flowers.

The Gilded Lily is an old fashioned shop that is mostly hidden by the display of flowers. The cool air inside not only keeps the flowers from wilting and turning brown, but it circulates the air so the scent isn't overwhelming when walking inside. There's a large counter in the back of the room, presumably where one rings up their purchases; otherwise, there's a single large table in the middle of the room and the walls are decorated with rows upon rows of cabinets, although every surface is taken with wild blooms of rainbow. Every color in the spectrum is represented, starting with white near the door - predominantly lilys, as the namesake of the store - shifting towards yellow, orange and earthy colors as one moved to the left, and strange blue, purple and almost black hues towards the right, meeting at the bulk of the red flowers towards the main counter.

The cafe, while new, is a stylish little modern place for ordinary and noble folk alike to come and have a taste of homemade goodness. You can find anything from sweets to deli goods, cold and hot drinks of every kind. Wooden tables are set up throughout the room, with the main counter being towards the connecting door between the cafe and flower store.

I do not love you as if you were salt-rose, or topaz,
or the arrow of carnations the fire shoots off.
I love you as certain dark things are to be loved,
in secret, between the shadow and the soul.

I love you as the plant that never blooms
but carries in itself the light of hidden flowers;
thanks to your love a certain solid fragrance,
risen from the earth, lives darkly in my body.

I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where.
I love you straightforwardly, without complexities or pride;
so I love you because I know no other way

than this: where I does not exist, nor you,
so close that your hand on my chest is my hand,
so close that your eyes close as I fall asleep.
