Who: Alani, Kaoru & Crystal When: Late October, Mid-Afternoon Where: Farmer's Market Weather: Crisp and clear, taste of Autumn in the air.
Kaoru trembled with glee. The smells, the sights, the sounds! The Scent was thrilled, pulling Crystal through the Farmer's Market, occassionally stopping to point out a rare and exotic fruit or chatter to a merchant about how best to prepare certain meals. Dressed in the favored white gown with a dark red coat, the curly-haired child was a constant moving ball of energy, delighted by the new experience.
Crystal could barely keep up, wearing a soft violet gown with long sleeves, the v-neck warmed by a dark purple scarf, her raven-wing ringlets curling softly around her flushed face. She adored watching Kaoru express her excitement, bouncing around to ask questions and learn everything first hand. The young woman herself had never been quite so interested in things like indian corn and squash, but her daughter was positively captivated. "Kay," she had asked at one point, "what part of the Market is your favorite?"
The child had been silent for a moment, before answering with a dark type of certainty, "The change."
She hadn't understood her daughter's response, but she hadn't had the chance to ask as Kaoru barreled onwards, unexhaustable in her enthusiasm. It was all Crystal could do to keep up!

Alani was currently hovering about the dry goods, fresh ground flour and pure cane sugar... definatly things she needed to restock on. As she scoured quietly over the materials in the grains section she glanced up, green streaked hair shifting in front of her eyes, at the sound of some distant voice that caught her attention briefly.
She saw a child and a woman close behind headed in her direction. Nothing special about this or them, at least that she could see. It was probably just a mother calling out to an errant child. For just a second the tan woman thought she caught the faint, sweet, fruity scent of produce as the wind blew a gentle gust in her direction. She smiled, trying to take a deeper breath to enjoy it but it was quickly gone and she was left with only the faint impression of what it'd been. She reminded herself to go visit a fruit stall when she was finished here.
Alani looked back down, cloth shopping bag held in the crook of her arm as she reached out to lift a sack of oats. "Hmm.. maybe I should make cookies." She spoke to herself.

"This is what you need," Kaoru informed Crystal, stopping a short ways from the woman with green-tipped hair. The child crossed lithe arms, blinking up at the older woman with ruby eyes.
Crystal arched a slender black brow, glancing over the goods. "Do I?" she mused quietly, fingers toying with the edge of her scarf.
The Scent rolled that red stare, as though exasperated. "We used the last of it in those apple tarts. And you said we could make pumpkin pie from scratch, so we need flour for the crust, right?" Kaoru chided the older woman gently, small hand lifting to point at the flour, just in case Crystal didn't know what it was.
A soft sigh was all that answered Kaoru's insistance, a quiet smile on seashell lips as Crystal inclined her head. "I did say that, didn't I?" The porcelain skinned woman rounded the sugar to observe the flour, as though it might tell her which one she needed to take. She had to consider the mess that would be made, and any false starts, added to the fact she had her parents who would want some, and maybe - just maybe - two special lords. Gathering her dress skirts, she kneeled as elegantly as one could, picking out a medium bag with her deft fingers. Goodness, but it was heavy! She never remember flour being so weighted! She stood slowly, the bag in her arms, looking a little more pale than usual. Taking a step back, she almost bumped into the other woman, dominantly grey-blue eyes shifting around with a startled expression. "Oh, excuse me, Miss." On the heels of that, she added politely, "Good day."
Kaoru had watched the flower girl with a very unchild like expression, brow dark and lips pulled into a studious frown. Once Crystal greeted the other woman, however, the expression evaporated in favor of something more befitting of the Scent's age. "You okay mom? Oh, do you know her too? Hi! I'm Kaoru, mommy calls me Kay so I don't mind if you do. And her name is Crystal, please don't call her Lady, that's so weird."
The young woman looked momentarily stricken, cheeks flushing a little at the child's outburst. "I'm sorry, she...she's a little exuberant," she explained to the woman. To Kaoru, she laughed softly, "I haven't met this woman, Kay, but I suppose you're out to change that." Crystal smiled apologetically to the woman, not sure how to explain Kaoru's behavior.
"She has pretty hair like Lord Irene Jewell Sir," the Scent mused out loud.
Crystal blushed a little more, sighing with the infinite patience only a mother can obtain.

Alani blinked, only shifting slightly to avoid the bumping. She held onto the bag she was holding and looked over to the other woman in surprise. Her expression changed quickly, giving a smile of reassurance and waving a hand in the air in a manner of 'now, now'. "Oh, no worries."
The tan island-girl looked down at the child as she spoke energetically. A smile tilted the woman's lips upward as information was pelted at her, and even more when her hair was complimented. When the girl... when Kay was done, Alani laughed. "Pleased to meet you, Kay and Crystal. Now that I know her name I won't have to call her Lady, thank you." She shifted the sack into the crook of her arm and held out her hand to the raven haired, embarassed looking woman. The blush made her look pretty, Alani thought. "My name is Alani Baker."

Crystal smiled abashedly, shifting the bag of flour precariously into the crook of her arm so she could free up one hand. Slender fingers took the offered hand, giving a warm and gentle handshake. "Nice to meet you, Miss Baker. I'm Crystal Beckett, and you've already met my spunky daughter, Kaoru."
No sooner had Crystal released Alani's hand, did Kaoru snake inbetween the women and offer another tiny hand to shake. "Oh wow so hey! You didn't know her mom? How cool, we made friends! Are you gonna make pie too? I like to cook, especially with fruits! The apple pie was fun, it reminded me of Amahte!" The child was grinning from ear to ear, curls bouncing in enthusiasm, the scent of pomegranate wafting gingerly through the air. The woman seemed much nicer than some of the other people the duo had met, and Kaoru was happy to meet someone who wasn't so afronted at the idea of kindness.
"Child! Do you breathe?" Crystal laughed as her daughter carried on again.
Ruby eyes rolled again, huffing at Crystal. "Well YEAH mom, I do!" Kaoru giggled and took a deep breath, holding it for a moment; it was truly just a few heartbeats before the Scent burst into another fit of giggles, darting behind the older woman's gown and peeking out from behind it.
The young woman stared in shock as the child hid behind her, balancing the flour in both of her arms again. Her grip felt weak today. "What? Are you being shy? What's gotten into you?" Crystal laughed softly, her melodious voice a little quieter than her normal clear self.
Kaoru simply smiled and watched Alani with curiosity, intelligence in those lidded eyes.

Alani couldn't help but give a light snort of laughter as the little girl carried on and on, chattering happily. She took the small hand and gave it a dainty shake, and then the kid was skittering off to hide behind her mothers dress.
Ah.. there was that scent of fruit again.. was that pomegranate? Alani hadn't thought it had much of a smell unless cut open. Perhaps someone was having a snack? "No.. I think I'm going to make some oatmeal cookies. I can't really cook.. but I can bake. There's a difference.. baking is more of a science.. add so much of this, add so much of that. Making sure it tastes good is easy. Cooking though." She shook her head, two-toned hair flying about her head, and for a moment giving the faint impression of a pinapple come to life. "That's all talent. I'm not so good at it."
She looked back at Crystal with a warm smile. "Are you shopping today?" Alani immediatly wanted to hit herself for a question with such an obviouse answer, but it was the only small talk she could think to make.

The young woman chuckled softly. "My dear Kay here is quite the cook. She doesn't have much of a sweet tooth, lucky for me, but she does like those fruit treats." At Alani's question, her smile warmed, giving a delicate lift and drop of her shoulders in a shrug. "I hadn't intended to - merely to get some fresh air, although Kaoru decided to take a romp through the market." Grey eyes shifted down to the child, who was now clinging to her leg while watching Alani, "And here we are."
Kaoru glanced up at Crystal, then back to Alani, smiling sheepishly. "I like this time of year," the child said, partially in defense. "Everything is so pretty and the change is so nice. And the food! The food is best this time now. I guess everyone suddenly knows how to bake or cook because it's all so good!" A wide grin formed on fleshy lips, a giggle spilling from that playful face.
"She eats quite a bit after she's been running around. I've been learning how to cook large amounts during these spry days." She winked at Kaoru, who looked quite horrified.
"I'm not a pig," the Scent sulked indignantly.
