Zerynthia

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Nicknames: Zeri
Race: 1/2 Wind 1/4 Water 1/4 Fire
Gender: Female
Parents: Jhin & Kyril
Siblings: Anahita, Zota, Cyrus, Sylas, & Ezili

Personality: Effervescent, Deceptive, Bewitching

Zerynthia is a born magician in the traditional sense. She adores card tricks, has been known to make coins disappear, and has a knack for keeping the room lively even if she messes up (which is often, thanks to youth and inexperience). Like many a soul born in the later generations of a large family, she thrives on the attention her 'grand performances' bring her and seeks to better her craft with each show. Challenging groups bring a challenge that makes the deal all the more exciting and Zerynthia can really have some fun!

Behind an aggressively exuberant exterior lies a sharp mind ready to pick apart her crowd. She's taken all the lessons her family has taught her to heart (albeit in her own unique way) and once she's found her target Zeri is quick to act. Sometimes it's a simple show to cover for Ezili's actions, and sometimes it's street performances designed to bring in money for her own pockets.

Fun Facts
-has a stash of flash powder she bought from a Belrean merchant
-wears nine coins on a gold chain for good luck

History

Zerynthia was born as the fifth child in Kyril and Jhin's ever expanding family. As an infant she was hale and hearty, rarely falling ill, and as such has developed an iron constitution. Growing up as part of a larger family has given her a sort of skewed view of the world; meaning she's never really met anyone she considers a stranger. Despite multiple warnings from parents, relatives and older siblings alike she's always sought to bring everyone into her fold, which has led to a sort of 'magical' childhood.

Growth Blurb: Zerynthia has always suffered from an inflated ego, and now that she's truly manifested magic of her own it's only grown! She's more determined than ever to make her mark on the world as the greatest performer so she's gone to Oba to train in the Capital.

Physical Description: Outfit inspo - xXx with the color palette closer to her youngling stage. Feel free to tweak with it though (I'm thinking sunrise colors, honestly)

Longer hair with a few accessories to go along with her outfit. I'd also like for her to have some kind of cat eye eyeliner and a darker lip

Prentice Solo 1

Zerynthia looked out across the land and was nearly at peace until a pair of arms grabbed her from behind. Instead of screaming the teenager squealed as she eagerly fell back into a warm embrace. “What are you doing Toril?! We’re going to get caught!” She laughed and tried to turn around only to be held tighter. Strong arms encased her smaller frame and a sharp jaw laid itself on her collar. “Are you trying to get on Papa’s bad side?”

“If it means spending more time with you then I’ll take the punishment.” Toril murmured against her hair. The taller hybrid was content just holding onto her, but unfortunately, she wasn’t happy to be contained. When Zerynthia made another move to turn around Toril snorted, “Just stand still for a second and enjoy the view.”

“Then you stand up front and I’ll get behind you. I don’t like it when I can’t see you.”

“If you did that you wouldn’t see anything. You’re too short.”

Zerynthia puffed up her cheeks and turned her head as if she were going to bite his nose, only to have Toril laugh at her. Begrudgingly he let her go, but not without sneaking in a quick kiss.

Toril was, without a doubt, one of the most handsome men Zerynthia had ever seen. The moment he’d been brought in to train as a ranger after living his life on the streets of Joria she knew they would be close. Toril was tall and stout, with features that made him blocky to some but to her it just gave him a solid attractiveness that went missing with some of the lither recruits. His golden hair and lighter skin spoke of a Sauti heritage, but his eyes were a shining purple, like a Belrean. She hadn’t yet gotten to see his crystals because of his clothing, so she had to wonder if they were pink like her Papa’s or green.

His ears were pointed as well, and she’d been begging him for weeks to let her pierce them. Toril would look stunning with a little lightning bolt just next to the tip.

“If anyone catches you skipping training you’ll be in trouble.” She teased, but already her hands were reaching out to wrap around his thick waist. The boy may have been a year younger than her, but already he was so much bigger. Zerynthia wondered if maybe there wasn’t some Aishan in his blood, like her Uncle Sol, or even some mammu ancestry. Wouldn’t that be something; if he grew giant tusks one day and his nose grew down to his toes?

“They’ll know who to blame.” Toril wrapped his arms around her once more, though this time in a much looser hold so he could keep an eye on Zeri. “Are you supposed to be training too? Or do you just make a habit of wasting time?”

“I wasn’t wasting my time. I was waiting for a handsome Prince to show himself even though I knew he wasn’t supposed to.” It wasn’t as if her parents didn’t approve of Toril coming around. He was a respectable young man with good intentions and even though his background couldn’t be proven he’d shown great promise in the community. Still, there was the matter of their youth and the responsibilities he was supposed to be upholding. Toril wanted to help; he’d said so hundreds, if not thousands, of times. He wanted to give back to the group that had given him shelter and she believed him.

Who knew that the greatest distraction he would face would come in the form of a wild slip of a girl?

Toril gave her a final kiss on the forehead before stepping back, even when she tried to hold on. “Come on, there’s something I want to show you.”

Quirking a brow, Zerynthia accepted the hand he held out to her and followed. At seventeen she couldn’t imagine anything beyond that moment. The way the wind smelled as they walked through tall grasses, the feel of his calloused fingers wrapped around her own or the sight of Toril’s curls licking the nape of his neck. He was the first relationship she’d ever had and even though she’d been told by older women that young love was fleeting to her this felt real. To Zerynthia Toril was her world and it didn’t matter to her if they were sneaking off somewhere they shouldn’t. There was no need for chaperones, for watchful eyes or check ins…What did any of that matter when they were both fully capable and completely in love?

He led her down a little gorge to a smaller stream held within. While the descent took a fair amount of time, Toril was around to help the ‘delicate’ Zerynthia when she ‘tripped’. Of course, she could have scaled down the path just fine on her own; that wasn’t the point. She wanted to feel encased by his strong, muscled arms and at one point he ever so graciously offered to carry her.

“Toril?”

“Hmm?”

“Tell me again why you picked me and not my sisters.” Zerynthia said it in a sing song voice and when he turned his world-weary eyes back to her the hybrid’s smile just grew. She knew it was a cheeky request, and honestly, she didn’t care.

This time he surprised her. “…You stink less.”

“Toril!” Zerynthia reached out to smack him and he just laughed.

“Sorry, sorry! I meant your eyes are less cross-!” When she reached out again he dodged and just kept laughing. “What do you want me to say that I haven’t said before?”

“Stop saying it like it’s a burden.” Zerynthia huffed. “I just want to hear why you like me. Zota’s prettier, Ana is better with a bow and Ezili-“

“Isn’t you, Zeri. Zota’s gorgeous, but her eyes don’t light up like yours do when you’ve got someone in your trap. Ana is talented, but she can’t mix black powder and Ezili is fast but what good is that without a distraction?” Toril lifted her hand and kissed the back of it. “You let me pick you. Stop giving me credit here. If you didn’t want me I wouldn’t be anywhere near you and we both know that.”

Well, he was right about that. From their vantage points Zerynthia was taller than him and for that moment, as she stood atop a stone, she felt that power. If she didn’t want Toril she could either run him off or let her siblings do it. Parents aside her family could be a whirlwind and she had no doubt they would make his life hell. Lucky for him she adored Toril and in that moment Zerynthia leapt from the rock into his waiting arms.

They stayed like that for a moment, locked in their embrace, until Toril inevitably started walking with his sweetheart in his arms. What he brought her too was something she hadn’t hadn’t seen before. Of course, the stone was something she and Ezili had walked past many times before, but now that it had cracked she could see it was full of crystals! And they were a glorious mixture of purples, just like Toril’s eyes.

She tapped his arm until he sat her down and Zerynthia bent closer to the rock to see its inside. “When did you find this?”

“Yesterday. We were investigating some rumors about bandits when we passed through, and I begged the others not to tell anyone. I wanted to make sure you saw it first.” When she turned to look at him Toril’s cheeks were a warm pink and he looked so pleased with himself.

That just made her heart skip a beat. “This is amazing Toril. “

“Do you want to bring it back? I can carry half a rock, I don’t think I could do the whole thing though…”

“Oh, would you?!”

Now that he was faced with carrying a huge stone back to the village, up a gorge or disappointing his girlfriend a myriad of emotions crossed Toril’s face. She knew she’d trapped him, but did Zerynthia let up? Not in the least. It was too fun watching him squirm.

“Uhm, well, if I go back for some rope I can probably pull it up and…maybe I could get some help…”

“It’s okay if you can’t. I’m sure Mama knows a spell that can raise it up or maybe one of the other rangers can help carry it.” She reached out to put her hand over his and gave it a squeeze. “Really, it’s okay; I’m just happy that you showed it to me.”

“No, no, it’s alright! I’ve got it. I’ll get it up to you.”

Zerynthia grinned and leaned close to give him a proper kiss. “I’ll help; I know I look scrawny, but I can at least clear the way.” And most of that was just going to entail pulling brush out of his way, but honestly, at least he wouldn’t get smacked by foliage on his way up.

Class Choice - Mage [Sorcerer]

In the dead of night Zerynthia sat across from an unlit candle and took a deep, steadying breath. Please, please, please… All she’d ever wanted in her entire life was magic. Her mother had the gift and while she didn’t use it in nearly as extravagant a fashion as some of the others she’d seen Zerynthia knew she could. Kyril’s magic had to have passed onto one of her children, so why hadn’t it gone to her? Why was she so broken that she couldn’t make a single flame flicker?

What books hadn’t she read? In the evenings when she wasn’t with her siblings, in between her shows and shenanigans, Zerynthia was working so hard. Every single day was spent with some kind of magical training and yet…nothing. She’d never been able to cast a spell nor was she able to light a single, insignificant candle.

The Great and Mighty Zerynthia was nothing more than a charlatan.

A sob ripped through her, but instead of letting it out Zerynthia buried her head against her legs. She pulled them close to her chest, wrapping her arms around her skinny limbs as tears pulled though her. She wanted so badly to be as great as the showmen of Oba, as her grandmother who could command a room with the flick of her hip, and this…this was supposed to be her path. Everyone in her family had their own talents and if she couldn’t add up as a ranger then surely she could at least be something great.

How many times had she shot a bow only to hit a tree instead? Zerynthia had the agility, she had the speed and the drive, but she’d never been able to mastery archery. She wasn’t strong enough to hold back the bow string for long nor was she able to pinpoint the target from yards away. Compared to her siblings she was a dud. And wasn’t that what was getting to her?

”Eh, you get one in every litter. You always have the showrunners and then there’s the dud.”

When she heard the breeding talking about his prized Perzi all those years ago Zerynthia had let it pass. He was talking about beasts, not people, but then why had it stuck with her? Why now after all these years did that one comment rise again to the front of her mind?

You should just be a pig farmer. It’ll be harder to disappoint them.
For a time she’d thought about being a Ranger, like her father and older sister, but it never really fit. Zerynthia just couldn’t keep up. She was a tiny, petite thing with arms the size of sticks and a mouth louder than a beating heart. In passing she’d been told that she was just in the way when she trained and now, more than any other time, she believed it.

Spirits why was she so stupid?! Why had she believed that she could have made a name for herself when there wasn’t a single spectacular thing about her. Black powder? Anyone could use that! A few sparks, some fancy costumes, a smile…And who was she compared to her siblings? Just a copy of Zota, who was already the golden child of their family. Toril loves you. How long would that last? How long would it take for him to see her for who she really was, a hapless wretch whose skills amounted to washing floors and causing distractions for her better, more capable siblings? She was good at smooth talking and diversions; all wonderful traits for a wash maid.
When Zerynthia opened her eyes the room was dark around her. Were it not for her sister sleeping close by she would have screamed. Just once she wanted to see a flame. Even if it wasn’t a big one she would have settled for a spark or a flicker.

“Help me,” Her whispered voice quivered as she held out her hand. Zerynthia bit her lower lip and reached for the wick of her candle. “Help me. Help. Me..” As her voice took on a desperate edge so too grew her anger. Over and over Zerynthia repeated the words until it became a mantra. Her eyes darkened as despair turned to an ugly sludge within. Why shouldn’t she have it? She’d done the work; she deserved it! IT WAS HERS TO HAVE!

“HELP ME!” Zerynthia shrieked and all at once the candle exploded. A great column of flame erupted from the small, wax stick and the room glowed as bright as day. With a terrified scream, Zerynthia leapt up from her spot on the floor and ran to her sister. It worked! IT WORKED. But as excited as she was Zerynthia was terrified. This fire was out of control and while it was content for the moment consuming her curtains it would spread any minute, taking over the whole house and her family along with it-

“MOTHER! FATHER!”

Spirits be damned, but it was beautiful. Zerynthia’s entire body shook as she took in the sight. Her hair billowed around her shoulders like the flame itself and for a moment there was a wild, manic smile that crossed her face. It was brilliant. Tears dried as soon as they touched her cheeks, but she didn’t care. Finally, finally she had it and now-

Zerynthia held out her hand and screamed, “STOP.” Her body pulled the flame, willing it to calm and once the door to their room burst open so too did the flame die out.

Prentice Solo 2

“You look awfully proud for someone who set their house on fire.” Toril knocked his shoulder against Zerynthia’s and leaned over to look into her eyes. Last night had been absolutely wild and while she was currently at home, trying to process it all, Toril had dropped by. At first she’d debated telling him to go home for a while, but having her boyfriend close by steadied her nerves.

“I did it,” She murmured and when he furrowed his brow, Zerynthia spoke up, “I did it Toril. That fire didn’t happen because of black powder or another candle. I did it with magic.”

“Zeri, you’ve always had magic,” He gave a little laugh and reached for her hand only to have her pull away.

“It happened.” Her voice had an edge to it now and when she looked up at him there was a feralness to Zerynthia. She’d always had a sense of mysticism to her, though in the theatrical sense rather than an aethereal connection. Now there was a spark in her eyes that hadn’t been there before and it was growing. “I could have burned it to the ground if I wanted to, but when I told it to stop it did.”

“…From what I heard it stopped for a minute, but when you were questioned about the fire it started again.” Toril supplied cautiously. He’d been warned about being near her right now. She was fragile at best; definitely a little frayed around the edges and raw. “Zeri that’s not safe. I know how much you’ve wanted this, but you need to-“

“What I need is for you to support me instead of putting up another barrier. Why is it so hard for you to be happy for me, Toril? That’s all I need.” It was like no one in her life could see how truly amazing this was. She would replace the curtains and the wall in time. Magic, though…that was the bigger picture here! Everything in her life was starting to make sense except for the very people who claimed to love her. “Maybe you should just go home.”

“…Is that what you really want?”

For a moment the two teenagers looked at each other and she didn’t know what she saw. The same easy going, lovable boy was replaced with the hardened Ranger he was becoming. He was accessing her; she knew the look, she’d seen her father do it before and to have those eyes turned on her clenched it. No matter what he said Toril couldn’t trust her anymore so Zerynthia nodded her head.

“I’m going to Oba soon. I’ll become a better sorcerous in the Capital than I ever will here and I can’t let that slip away.” But I can let you go. It hurt, spirits letting him go burned, but when Toril walked away from Zerynthia for the last time she felt an odd sense of freedom. He didn’t understand and he never would. Toril wasn’t the type to see things in shades of grey which made him a better worker than a thinker. That’s what their dynamic was. So when she started to shift he just…didn’t fit anymore.

She was going to make it worth it. All of this inner turmoil and grief couldn’t outweigh the elation she felt at having magic at her fingertips. Even when Zerynthia raised her hand a bubble of flame spread across the skin of her palm and she felt it’s power. She didn’t need Toril; he was only going to hold her back. If she’d stayed with him she would have stayed in one place for the rest of her life when what she wanted most was to travel. The world needed to know Zerynthia and they would.

Spirits would they ever.
