[Zerynthia]
The storm that rolled through made for a rough day of performances. Zerynthia sat on a bench in the tavern, her costume as bright as it ever was, with the rain pelting down outside. She’d been told explicitly before that her particular ‘talents’ weren’t welcome inside the Tavern halls so all she could do was watch someone else perform instead.
Sighing, the teenager held up her hand to get a passing server’s attention and got nothing but weird looks instead. Even they hate me. With a groan, the teenager slumped head first onto the table.

[Selim]
Unlike Zerynthia, Selim had managed to make a fine go of it. Indoor entertainment was his forte and he’d been able to make enough so that their little group could afford a few nights at the local inn. Now that their funds could be spent on supplies instead he was keen on celebrating he just…had to find Cyril first. Where did he get off to? Drinks and snacks in hand, he turned to survey the area but came up mostly empty.
He did see a rather brightly dressed teenager and well…she looked like she needed some cheering up. “Mind if I sit with you? I’ve got some extra if you want a bite.”

Zerynthia rolled her head against the table and peered up at the stranger sitting across from her. She’d never seen a yaeli before, much less a hybrid, but she knew the look from descriptions. Pushing herself back up to sit, she nodded and reached out for a piece of fruit. “It’s fine; you can sit here. Not like you’ve got many other options,” She groused and gave a general motion to the tavern. Many of the seats were full of people escaping the rain and most of them were by thicker, sweatier workers straight from their respective farms.

“Yeah, I’m not about to get involved in that.” With as thin as he was Selim knew he’d end up squished between a bunch of sweaty windlings and he could think of better ways to go. When she reached across the table for a drink, then hesitated, Selim quickly said, “It’s ale so maybe we should get you some water? You look a little young for it.” Or was she old enough to drink? Furrowing his brow, he held the drink back just in case. He wasn’t about to have her parent’s run him down for letting their daughter get by with things she shouldn’t.

Zerynthia huffed and with a roll of her eyes she raised her hand again. “See? It’s not like it matters. No one’s going to sto-“
“Hey there, what can I help you with?”
Her eyes widened, but when the teen looked over to their waitress she noticed her looking at Selim instead of her. Of course she would; he was the ‘big spender’ here, hadn’t yet started harassing the staff, and he was good looking. So, Zerynthia just lowered her hand with a few grumbled curse words.

Oh, so the attention was on him then? Selim looked across the table to the put out hybrid before him, but instead bringing attention to her he ordered a few glasses of water. Once the serving maid walked off he couldn’t help propping an elbow onto the table to lean forward. “So, what was that about? She wouldn’t even look at you. The only time a server outright ignores a customer is when you’ve done something really bad.” She was just a little slip of a girl; what kind of things could she have done to make such a hardened impression?

“The last time I was here I may have set the stage on fire.” She tossed a thumb over her shoulder toward a very darkened, charred, ‘recently repaired’ platform. With the windows closed inside of the tavern it was harder for the smell of burnt wood to escape and even the bards who were playing atop it were careful not to touch the wood. “I didn’t mean to do it though; sometimes accidents happen when you perform and they just didn’t know how to roll with it.” Of course when she was finishing up those words their server came back and with a harsh look she sat the cups down infront of them. “You caught my hair on fire, Zerynthia.”
“You look better without it,” She shrugged unapologetically and grinned when the older woman walked away.

All throughout that little exchange Selim kept his mouth shut. When she motioned toward the stage he leaned over just enough to get a look and then smartly focused on his drink when the waitress came back around. A boom of thunder shook the building around them, causing a round of surprised gasps from the surrounding patrons, before once again the bard’s music drowned them out.
“So…what kind of performance’s do you do? Are you a fire dancer?” He was basing his assumption on not only the costume she wore, but the damage left in it’s wake.

“I’m the Great and Mighty Zerynthia!” She held her hands up with a boisterous flourish and even when it caught the eye of several nearby patrons Zeri didn’t seem to care. The girl had never been shy, nor was she about to learn manners in public. “Sometimes my acts have dancing in them, but mostly it’s just fantastical displays to take your mind into the wilds of fantasy.”[/b] How much of it was a sales pitch and where the actual truth began was vague even for her. “Magic is a beautiful thing and I think more people should have fun with it instead of wasting it on books.”

Oh this is a whole ordeal. When Selim sat down next to the teenager he hadn't expected this much personality, but he should have, given her choice of costume. The entire persona was a bit much for him, though she seemed to enjoy herself. That's what makes a good showman. She had a presence, if nothing else.
"Well, Zerynthia, from one performer to another I think you're onto something." He reached over for a bite of food, only to have his hand snatched.

She put both of her hands on top of his and leaned across the table, heedless of how her efforts were disrupting the snacks he was trying so hard to eat. "Do you really mean it? What kind of work do you do? Are you hiring?" If he was some kind of scout then he might have connections! Maybe this was her big break and she could get out of working at these little rick shaw taverns.

Her hands were like claws holding him in place! Whenever Selim gave a tug Zerynthia just held on tighter and he inhaled shakily. This was far from the dejected girl he'd met only moments prior. "I'm a contortionist with a troupe in Belrea." He gulped and tugged once more, only succeeding in getting a piece of cheese caught between his arm and the table. "I'm not hiring because I don't run the troupe, but maybe you could start there? Or just go to a bigger city in general?"

A bigger city..."I've thought about it dozens of times before, but it's hard enough to travel, let alone live somewhere new." It took so much for her to visit her grandparents in the South, so if she wanted to move there it would be an ordeal! Where would she stay? Would it be with family or on her own? She could go to a different country like Belrea, but Oba would just be easier.
After far too long Zerynthia let go of Selim's hand and settled back onto her bench. "Do you really think it would help if I tried? I'm serious; give me any kind of information you have."

The hybrid rubbed his wrist and pulled his hands toward his lap. As much as he would like to finish off his food he was terrified to reach out like that again. Better play it safe and keep his limbs hidden. "I do. Bigger cities will draw bigger crowds and you're more likely to get spotted by someone who knows the business. If you're wanting to make fantastical performances then you'll need someone with money to back you up and you won't find that here."
If she just wanted to perform at the tavern every other night it wouldn't be a big deal, but to make a living she would need to go where the rich were.

The more he talked the more Zerynthia's reality started to sink in. If she really wanted to make her name big then she would have to leave home, even if it was to stay with extended family. Could she do that? She loved her family more than anything and her father's people needed able bodies to help with the cause. Leaving for a selfish reason felt like turning her back on him completely and yet...Spirits, was it tempting.
"Were you ever conflicted? On becoming a performer?"
