Currently: On the road to Jauhar

Name: Eresin Stage: Stage 3 - Sage Race: Earthling: Ice Gender: Male 3 Base Traits: Quiet, Aloof, Sensitive Personality: Eresin is quiet around strangers. Most of the time he keeps to himself unless he's around people he knows and trusts, which is very few due to his seemingly prickly exterior. His quietness often shoves people away, and he isn't the first to voice his opinion so things that he wants to say often get shoved under the carpet. When people get to know him, his true colors show. Deep down, he's a really goofy and carefree guy.
Unfortunately his quietness makes him seem very aloof and in fact he tends to prefer his solitude to the company of others. Eresin would much rather spend time away from others in favor of doing things on his own, especially when studying magical arts. It’s not that he hates being around others, but being social drains him physically and he finds it much easier to observe from afar rather than participate.
When it comes down to friends and loved ones, he is loving and tries to help whenever he can, making him a great companion for the long road. This sensitivity helps him to connect and to cherish those that he does have, but at the same time helps keep him distant. He is too afraid after all of getting close to another only to lose them.
He is sensitive to the world around him and often can pick up on many things that others cannot. In a way that explains his love of magic as it is something that he can easily work with. To him it is a puzzle to be solved while his body naturally has a talent for it.
Description: Eresin has pale blue skin, almond shaped gold eyes and straight black hair tied in a ponytail (down the middle of his shoulder blades). His expression is usually neutral and indifferent. Body wise he is long and lean, much more slender than muscular. Clothing: Often he is in elegant clothing that is deep blue in color with fur trim. Often he will also have a fur trim cloak with a gold clasp on his shoulder. (Mostly up to the colorist, can feel free to reference this image for a general idea) Accessories: A single gold earring elegantly designed in a bird shape (design similar to this as a loop earring - x). History: Eresin comes from a merchant family who is fairly wealthy. However, in their quest to continue the trade and to keep the stocks flowing his family tends to become preoccupied with work. Both of his parents have a kind nature, but tend to be work-a-holics so as a child Eresin was often accidentally ignored and left to raise himself. Often he would find himself alone and contemplative, always curious and learning more about the world around him while his parents bartered goods. This perhaps better explains why he is so accustomed to being more of a loner since that was how he was raised. He adapted to taking care of himself for the most part while his parents worked in and out of Zena. And when he was younger they would either take him along with them on their trips or leave him in the care of his uncle, Nerio.
It was those weeks when he was alone with his uncle that Eresin loved the most. Unlike his parents who were rational, down to earth people Eresin’s uncle enjoyed living life in a variety of ways. A mage by trade his uncle often would demonstrate his knowledge of the arcane to his nephew and would always tell him stories of his younger years when he traveled all across Zena and even into foreign lands. It may have been a few stretches of the truth here and there to liven up his tales, but Eresin never minded. He loved his uncle and even when Eresin grew older, away from the innocent eyed child he had been, the boy would let his uncle get away with such tales. In a way listening to his uncle’s stories and wisdom was comforting and built a strong bond between the two. Not only that, but Eresin also picked up a love of magic from his uncle that would later be reflected in his own personal talents.
His parents may have been away and busy, but that did not mean they never thought of their child. Rather they cared for him so much that they often brought him home trinkets from their travels. One year it would be a special fruit then the next trip it could be a special piece of material turned into a cloak for him or even the next would be an earring that his mother thought looked lovely for him. It was when Eresin mentioned his uncles stories about Kimfas and how interesting they were to him that his mother took it to heart. Their next trip the merchants came back with a lime green baby kimfa with lavender accents and brilliant blue eyes named Peco. In their place, Peco became a family of sorts to him while he was alone and neither the boy nor kimfa leave each other’s side for long.
Recently his uncle left on some new magical quest while Eresin was left to travel again with his parents. Now that he is older his parents wish to bring him along with him more as they continue to travel across Tendaji with their merchant caravan. While he loves and cherishes his parents Eresin secretly would like to find out about his uncle’s newest whereabouts so that he can meet up with him and learn more about the arcane arts. After all only his uncle truly appreciates magic, and while his parents do not shun mages they would much rather Eresin learn about their trade instead.
He, however, is working on the courage to tell them that what he truly wants may not be in their current interests…

Solo - 1 (Flashback Journey to Oba)
A bag of Kinfa feed fell to the floor. Eresin reached down to the ground and snatched it up as quickly as he could. Too late. “Eresin, you have to be more careful, son. We have to make sure everything is undamaged for the customers.” Eresin’s father was getting on his last nerves. He scowled at his mistake and sighed. This heat sure as hell isn’t helping either. How I would love to be back in the frigid climate of Zena right now. He wiped the sweat from his brow and put the bag of seed on top of the other two bags inside the cart.
It had been a particularly hot day in Vers, and it was about time that the temperatures were hot and dry. Making the stop here helped resupply their kinfa food, while grabbing extra in order to take to their next destination to sell it; Oba. I hope we leave soon… Though I’ve heard Oba’s climate is much hotter than this. At least this place has wildlife and rain sometimes… Eresin looked at his kinfa, Peco, sleeping in their cart. “Hey, that’s no fair!” Peco cooed at him and rolled over. Heh, you lazy guy… He continued to help his father load clay pottery filled with water, healing salves, medicine and other assortments of useful liquids into their cart. When they finished, Eresin jumped in the back and tied everything down. Then they closed the back door to the cart and started their journey to Oba. Phew… I guess I’ll join you in your nap, Peco… He wanted to stay awake and enjoy the ride, but he just couldn’t keep his eyelids from staying shut. The hay in the cart seemed so much more comfortable after a long day of work. Why fight it? He drifted asleep after a few minutes.
Eresin woke up to a loud thunk as he found himself tossed up a short distance and landed back in the hay. Welp. That’s one way to wake up. He sat up and looked around. Everything seemed to be safely tied down, save for one leather bound book. It was a dull brown color, with no title and very strange markings etched into the front and back cover. Strange… I don’t remember keeping a book like this for sale… As he touched the clasp that held the book shut, he felt a tingle run through his fingers and up his hand. It felt familiar, like he had felt this sensation before. Could this be my uncle’s?
Just as Eresin was about to undo the clasp on the book, he felt the cart come to a halt and heard his father call his name. Eresin cursed under his breath and tucked the book underneath the hay. He rounded the side of the wagon and saw his father crouched by one of the wheels and a broken wheel piece. “Help me out with this, son?”
“Sure, dad.” As they went through the motions of replacing the broken wheel, Eresin couldn’t help but think about the book he had found. My uncle’s book looked like that. It was a book about magic and power, but at the same time he told me it was very dangerous if not used properly. He couldn’t help but think, why was it in his possession? Did his parent’s know about it? Was it even the same book? Well, only one way to find out. He thought about asking his parents about the book, but decided that he would peek inside it first to see if it was even the book of magic his Uncle had. After wrapping up with the repairs, he retreated back to his hay pile and sifted through it. Once again, as he touched the clasp of the book, his hands almost shook. Without hesitation, he pushed the button to open the clasp and opened the front cover. There were no words on the first page, but there was a folded piece of paper with Eresin’s name on it. Eresin froze and kept looking at the note, which was sliding down the book with each little bump as their cart kept on its way. This looks like my uncle’s handwriting… He reached for the note, but as his hand approached it, he paused. What could it say? He had spent so much time thinking of finding his uncle….and now it seemed his uncle was wanting something from him. Why else would there be a note?
He forced himself to stop hesitating and grabbed the letter. He had been wanting clues to find Nerio. Perhaps this was exactly what he was needing. Alright time to see what you want, Uncle. Eresin unfolded the letter and started to read.
“Eresin,
You may not read this until you’re much older, but your parents mean well. They don’t want you to be exposed to me any longer for they don’t want you to walk the path of a mage. They wish to keep you safe and live the merchant’s life, but I know the signs all too well. It isn’t the life for you. You have much potential as a mage and a natural affinity for it. You are the kind to seek knowledge for the sake of knowledge, and not out of greed. I know one day you will make an excellent mage. In the meantime, I have hidden the book of sorcery amongst your things. When you are ready, it well lead you to me, so we may hone your abilities. Keep it safe. Also, do not hold a grudge towards your parents for keeping you from your destiny. They love you very much, but when the time comes, as with all children, you will find your calling. I will see you hopefully soon.
-Your Uncle, Nerio”
Eresin smiled and folded up the letter, gently tucked it away into the front cover where he found it, and sealed the book. He looked for a spot all the way on the top of his book shelf, near the back of the cart where he kept his keepsakes, and placed it there. I’ll look for you soon, Uncle. I just need an opportunity.

Solo 2 – (Wait or search?)
The crickets were chirping quite loudly during a cool night in Oba. The streets were silent and the wind didn’t blow through the buildings like it did sometimes. When blew just the right speed, not too fast and not too slow, a whistling sound could be heard emitting from the alleyways and in between buildings. Probably because of how they were designed, but not tonight. No, tonight, everything was still and the only noise was the cacophony of crickets. Eresin rolled over onto his back, eyes wide open. Augh! Why can’t I sleep?!It was more of a rhetorical question. He had too much on his mind to even think about sleeping that night. Earlier in the day he met a hybrid named Talisia, whom he remembered meeting before. Even earlier than that, on his journey to Oba, he found the very book of magic that his uncle had. Mysteriously in his possession, opened it and found a note from his uncle, telling Eresin to find his uncle when he was ready. “But how will I find you, Uncle Nerio?” His Uncle never gave him the location to find him, or even a clue as to his whereabouts. The only thing that I have is the book. Maybe there is a hint inside there?
Eresin sat up and got out of his sleeping mat. He walked over to his chest in his tent and turned the lamp on. He moved the lamp over to his small table and then opened his chest. He moved some of his keepsakes over and uncovered the book his uncle left him, being careful not to make too much noise. Wouldn’t want a grumpy kinfa, would we? He took a deep breath and moved his hand towards the book, only to hesitate at the strange feeling in his stomach. What if his family caught him with this? He started to think that maybe he shouldn’t open the book now. He figured tomorrow night would probably be better. He put the book back in its spot in the chest, covered it with the items that were on it before and closed the chest. He put the lamp out and crawled back onto his sleeping mat. Yes, surely tomorrow I will have the courage to look inside. Perhaps I will see Talisia again as well. With that thought, he thought about meeting her again until he fell asleep.
He awoke in the morning to Peco sitting on his forehead and squawking. As he sat up, he saw a note in Peco’s mouth. He opened it and read. “You’ve been working too hard lately, son. Have the day to yourself and relax. -Dad” He chuckled. “Well looks like we get to do whatever, Peco. What should we do?” Peco cooed and tilted his head. There is always the book… He looked towards his chest. Alright then, I get a whole day to get to know what is inside that book. Again, he retrieved the book from the chest and placed it on the table. As his hand reached to undo the clasp, Eresin took a breath. Here goes nothing. He opened the front cover to the first page. The symbols were strange, but slightly familiar. Hadn’t he seen this book as a youngling?
Runes….there’s so many runes.
As he flipped back to the first page and thought for a moment, he noticed something odd about the pages. Why would one of the pages stick out a little too far? Almost like it wasn’t naturally a part of the book…another note? This time as he read, Eresin had a small smile. Figures.
I hope you’ve been studying this well. Continue reading and find the hidden pockets of information I have placed especially for you. If it has been five months since you left Zena, then I know you should be on the same path. Instead of Matori, perhaps think of Jauhar. I hear it’s lovely this time of year.
If one was to ever consider learning magic from an uncle…that is.
Everything was starting to make sense. The book of magic would only be intriguing to Eresin and only he would be the one to ever consider reading it. What better place then to hide some secret notes? Of course it would be Nerio. Eresin recognized the handwriting and that definitely was Nerio’s. Perhaps he could finally find a way to see his uncle again. Ink and pen. I need to find some ink and a pen! Quickly he scrambled to his feet, startling Peco in the process. “Sorry, Peco, I’ll be right back really quick! Stay here until I’m back!” Eresin didn’t even bother putting regular clothes on. He bolted out of his tent and into his parent’s. Where do they keep it…? He looked around the neat and tidy tent. He spotted an inkwell and feather pen. He grabbed them both and bolted back to his tent. He had to jolt down these directions just in case! His uncle was a smart man. Instead of spelling out the directions he had left dots throughout the book to create his own map. Looks like a good way to encourage studying. Eresin shook his head as he tried to rearrange the strange symbols on paper. Jauhar….would it be like this?
As he read another note appeared. Almost as if it were an afterthought.
Are you certain you want to risk this? You have a merchant’s life easily lined up for you. My sister was always so hopeful you would…
“No, I don’t wish to stay a merchant any longer. I want to learn more about magic and being a mage from you. I don’t mind travelling, but being a merchant isn’t for me. I want to explore and adventure!” He did feel a moment of guilt. How was he going to tell his parents? His mother especially was always emotional when it came to the topic and he hated breaking her heart. Eresin felt torn between duty and destiny. Yet he didn’t feel right being a merchant, the idea just felt wrong. He could feel things, sense things…something inside of him stirred at the thought. I can’t stay here.
Almost as if his decision were to be expected, Eresin continued on into another hidden note towards the end of the pages…
“ Then you’ve decided? Excellent. I am currently on my way to Jauhar. They love you and wish to see you flourish into the best you can be. I’m sure they will understand. As far as my exact location, the book should guide you. Use the symbols as a map. This is your first lesson, unlocking the mind. I believe you can find me if you truly wish. Until I see you, Eresin. Take care.”
Eresin let out a hefty sigh and sat back. Well that’s a relief. All that’s left is to find a way to tell my parents and travel to Jauhar. Piece of cake, right? If only it were that easy. He would find it hard to travel alone, even though he knew how to get to most settlements, it was still dangerous to travel alone.Well, I’ll find someone to travel with. For the time being, I need to work up the courage to talk to mom and dad… He closed the book and tucked it away safely into his chest. He pet Peco and started brainstorming on how to go about the tasks he needed to accomplish.
In this quest, Eresin is forced is to make a decision when confronted about Talisia, confirming his desire to protect her, giving him a reason to become a mage. He also realizes the dangers of travelling and that it won't always be fun and games.
The market buzzed yet again in Oba. The sun was high and blazing in the sky with no clouds what so ever. It was really hot and dry, making the crowd of people in the marketplace seem much hotter. It was hard for anyone to focus in this kind of heat, especially someone from Zena who was used to the frigid temperatures and snowy landscapes. Eresin had too much on his mind to sort through, and the Oba’s heat certainly wasn’t helping think, let alone tend to his usual routine of manning his parent’s stall while they were away. He leaned on the stall counter, waiting for the next customer to show up, while trying to figure out what to do with his life. Like a broken record, his conversation with Talisia kept repeating itself in his head, about the dangers, about him needing to be able to hold his own in a fight. The fact that she was a hybrid and that he wants to travel with her will bring a dangerous crowd. Regardless of the sheltered life he lived, these were facts of the real world. Would he be able to fight? What if Talisia was in danger? What then? Would he continue to hide? If she got hurt, I’d never forgive myself… But I have no idea how to fight. I can’t use magic either, I really don’t know how.
His thoughts were interrupted by a skinny tall man pounding on the counter with the bottom of his fist rather roughly. Eresin was startled at the sudden noise and flinched. He looked up, unamused, and cocked an eyebrow at the stranger. The man laughed and said to a slightly shorter, but stockier man next to him, “Bart, this one’s a bit jumpy, eh?” They both laughed at Eresin and pointed at him. The sudden laughter didn’t seem to bother the crowd.
Slightly flustered, Eresin cleared his throat and asked, “Can I help you?” They stopped short in their laughter, and their faces instantly went into a serious composure. The shorter man called Bart leaned forward into Eresin’s face. “Maybe you can pipsqueak. See, me an’ my buddy Grim are out lookin’ for a certain someone. Someone who happened to be here at this very stall the other day, chattin’ with you.”
Grim butted in, “Bart, quit beatin’ around the bush. We’re lookin’ for a hybrid girl. We saw her head this way the other day. She had skin like yours, white hair and two different colored eyes. You know her?”
Well, this escalated quickly… Eresin’s mind started racing. These thugs were looking for Talisia? Why? They can’t possibly want anything good, and most likely are going to harm her in some way. Eresin then made the connection. They were the ones she got into a tussle with and she ended up barely walking away from it.
“Are you deaf, boy?!” Grim shouted and slammed on the counter with his fist again, making Eresin flinch slightly once more. Eresin could tell they were getting impatient, and he had to somehow diffuse the situation, fast. It was also oddly quiet in the marketplace, and using his peripherals, Eresin noticed that the streets had cleared up. What the…?
“I don’t know what you’re talking about, sir. I’ve seen many people here during my time in Oba. Even if I did see her, I wouldn’t remember her or where she went after.”
Bart put both his hands on the counter, which made Eresin step back. “Oh we’ll make you remember, kid.” Eresin knew in his gut, he was definitely in for some trouble. What the hell am I supposed to do now? There’s no talking my way out of this mess… Frantically he tried to think of something, but before he even had time to formulate a plan, Bart and Grim were already hopping the counter. Bart grabbed Eresin’s shirt by the collar and shook him a bit. “I’m not going to ask again, punk. Where’s the hybrid?! Don’t make me mess up your pretty little face!”
“I told you, I have no idea what you’re talking about!”
Grim chuckled. “Wrong answer, kid.” Bart threw Eresin across the stall into the back room, busting the door wide open. Eresin groaned from the pain, his heads spinning. Ouch… I’m going to be feeling this in the morning… As Eresin started to get up he felt around to get some footing as he reached up, his hand met one of the walking sticks his parents had for sale. He grabbed it as he stood up and readied himself. This was the moment that would tip the scales and make him fight. He knew that he might not make it out of this, but he had to try. I’m already chest deep in trouble. Besides… There’s no rewards if you don’t risk anything.
“Hey, Bart, he wants to fight us!” The duo laughed at him as Eresin took up a fighting stance. Suddenly Grim stopped laughing and charged at Eresin. Eresin managed to dodge him, making Grim crash into the shelves in the storage area. He swung the walking stick at Bart, but missed, and Bart retaliated with a few quick jabs. Eresin was able to block a few, but one lucky one nailed him right in his cheek, causing him to reel back from the blow. Bart then smirked at Eresin as he looked behind him. Grim had recovered already and found himself a large plank, ready to swing it. Eresin, quick to react, ducked as Grim swung it horizontally. With a loud “Crack!” the wood plank met Bart’s face, knocking him to the ground. There was a moment of shock, and a pause in the fighting.
“Bart, you okay?” Bart didn’t respond, and Eresin used this opportunity to make a move against Grim. He was already low, so Eresin used the walking stick for a sweeping blow, knocking Grim to the ground. Then, Eresin knocked Grim out by hitting him in the head with as much force as he could put into his downward swing. Eresin’s swing was so hard, the walking stick snapped in two on impact.
He did it. He was a little roughed up, but he actually cleverly won his first fight. He groaned and panted as he started coming down from the adrenaline rush, and the pain started to set in. He sat down and looked around to see the whole stall was a mess from the fighting. Man, when my parents get back, I’m going to have to explain everything… Including my plans to leave them… Speaking of which, as soon as he finished that thought, the door opened to the stall.
“Eresin we’re ba- Oh goodness!” Eresin’s mother exclaimed. “What happened here? Did someone try to rob the store? Are you hurt?” She rushed to his side and embraced him on the ground.
Eresin’s father grunted and said, “Well by the looks of it, Eresin handled himself very well once again.” Eresin gently pushed his mother away and stood up. He found it difficult to find a way to even start explaining. I have to start somehow… “Mom, Dad, there’s something I need to talk to you about…”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Eresin’s father sat back in his chair and corssed his arms, and Eresin’s mother buried her face in her hands. With the thugs tied up and still unconscious, there was nothing for the family to worry about, save for the fact that Eresin pretty much just told them everything, from his plans to find his uncle and become a mage, to his plans in travelling with a girl he just met, and that the thugs were here to find her. He also told them that he was aware of the dangers that would entail, let alone travelling with a hybrid. He made it clear though that he didn’t care, and that she wasn’t just some random stranger. He also made it clear that she could be trusted, and would prove to be one of the best companions he could have, next to Peco of course.
“Is there nothing we can do to change your mind, son?” His father asked.
“We can’t let him go, it’s too dangerous out there!” His mother cried.
“I’ve made up my mind. There’s nothing that can hold me back. All I’m asking is that you please let me go. I don’t want this to be any harder than it has to be.” Eresin looked his dad straight in the eye.
“Well…” Eresin’s dad paused. “Since you’ve proven you can take care of yourself, then… Go.”
“What? No!” Eresin’s mother protested and ran out of the stall towards their tents.
Eresin frowned. “Eresin, don’t worry. I’ll take care of her. For now, just pack your things and be on your way. Just promise me you’ll visit sometime. You know our trade routes.” He stood up and hugged Eresin. “Just know that no matter what happens, you will always have a home with us.” He smiled and left the stall.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Eresin shouldered his pouch filled with some food and herbal poultices, grabbed a staff his father gave him, and held Peco close. “Well, I guess that’s it then…” Peco cooed and rubbed up against Eresin. “Yeah, buddy, I’ll be fine.” He wiped a tear from his eye. Now, to go find Talisia. He started to make his way towards the outskirts of the city to find Talisia’s camp.

Finding a Spot
Training with Nerio wasn’t the worst experience in the world and fighting with Kian wasn’t the best at the same time. The older mage would rail on him until he felt like his own limbs were about to pop off. Is he trying to help me grow or is he just trying to send me to the spirits early? Grumped Eresin after a rather tough match. Everything hurt, his back ached from being thrown to the ground and his arms felt like jelly. Could he even move them in a wiggle? Eresin stared down before trying one more time. Barely.
Talisia had thankfully given him some medical herbs which he chewed on slowly while reading over more tomes. So if he concentrated hard enough on his ice magic then perhaps the next step would be to try this spell…Eresin rolled his head on his shoulders in frustration. It seemed that meditation and studying were his biggest strengths, but being on the battlefield continued to show him a different reality. Would he ever get better? I would hope so. Eresin frowned before feeling a peck on his shoulder, “Hm?”
Peco cooed at the boy before hopping up and down on a clawed foot, “Pec?” It tilted its head almost as if studying the mage for something. Still, it was strange watching how the baby kinfa was slowly starting to grow as the months passed. No more could Eresin simply carry him on his back and even the satchel was starting to get to become too small for the growing familiar. Soon enough Eresin would be expecting to see Peco truly flying through the skies. He just didn’t know if he would have the guts to ride it. I suppose we’ll see when the time comes. Just the mere thoughts of heights made him shake his head. It was fine as long as he didn’t fall, right? But if he fell then things would be different. Obviously.
“I’m fine, promise.” Reaching into his pouch Eresin brought out some treats for the kinfa who greedily gulped them down, “Or maybe that was what you wanted this whole time?” He chuckled as he patted his familiar’s bright green head, “Come on. You’ll never be able to fly if you keep stuffing yourself on treats.” Just like he would never be able to get stronger unless he tried more and more and more. Eresin rubbed a hand along his forehead. Was it just him or were the runes in this tome starting to blend into one? Perhaps it was time to just take a walk for a bit.
Stretching his legs did sound like a rather nice idea. Nodding at his decision, Eresin clasped the tome shut tightly and grabbed his staff. Let’s see what Jahaur has in store for us today. Would it be a wild pack of radaku, an angry Alkidike, or more strangers at the market? Eresin teased himself though a feeling of dread did remain. Since the menzuri incident he had learned to be more wary of dangerous creatures. Even with magic at his side he didn’t want to take any risks. Especially if he was by himself.
So the mage made certain to not walk in any dangerous paths. Instead he decided to trail up north of the campsite so that he could explore the area where the trees were less clustered and there was more hilly terrain. A meditation spot would be a great find. He could definitely use a place outside of the camp where others continued to walk. Nerio had a few mages that came in and out of the area since they enjoyed training with him and taking notes. Scholars the bunch of them Kian would grump before going on his own way. For some reason Eresin had noticed that the other mage wasn’t too fond of the other apprentices and sages. I guess he would rather be at taverns with a pretty face than listening to old men talk. The thought was enough to make Eresin shake his head with faint amusement. Was he an old man for enjoying those conversations? Probably.
As his mind continued to swirl with thoughts Eresin kept walking. Up and over bigger roots and through thick brush. While shifters preferred the tree tops the mage didn’t mind trying to navigate the forest floor. Here though it was becoming less of a jungle and more of an open area. That was due to being on the verge of the borders of Jahaur and Tale. Nerio, after all, had never intended to go too far into the rainforests so it was fairly easy to get around the area. I don’t want to go too far out. So turning on his heel Eresin began to walk back when he noticed a youngling who was crouched alongside of the road.
“Oh, can I help you?” He reached out to touch the boy’s shoulder as he continued sobbing.
“No-no.” The shifter boy shook his head quickly, “I just uh…had a dust in my eye.”
“You sure?” Eresin raised a brow, “I don’t mind helping you.”
“Then.” The boy pouted before a young girl popped up from the trees.
“No cheatin!” She frowned towards the stranger, “He always sobs like that to try and get me out of hidin’.” She flushed lightly, “I guess it worked though cause here I am.”
The boy had already bolted towards her and attached a firm grip to her arm, “Hah!”
“Oh.” Eresin just blinked at the two of them, “Then you were playing a game?”
“Yep.” The boy grinned, “She hates it when I find her so she picks awfully good spots but I always manage to trick her out of it!”
“You’re awful.” The girl pouted, “Next time I’ll hide in the waterfall…”
“I’m sorry, waterfall?” Eresin found himself asking, “Would it be okay if I could see it?” A waterfall sounded nice surprisingly. Could that be a lead for him to find a spot for meditation? It would be nice to let nature just fall around him in such a relaxing manner as well.
“You wanna hide?” The girl blinked towards the man, “No offense mister but you seem rather old for such a game.”
“Haha, no.” Eresin held out his hands, “I just need a place to relax and it would be nice if it was hard to find.”
“Oh, “The girl pouted, “I suppose so then.”
“Thanks,” Eresin grinned, “I can show you some more hiding techniques if you like. I used to be a pro at hiding games you know.”
“Oh?” Her gaze glimmered while the boy pouted next to her, “That would be great! But let me show you the place first mister and you can teach me…I mean us there.” She glanced towards the boy who perked up, “But make sure I get the best one okay?” She added on quietly before leading the way.
Following them Eresin could only smile. He remembered being that age once. Even Kian had played games with him back in those days.
I’ll hide you find me, okay?
Sure Ciaran! On the count of ten…
Go, go!
Laughing both boys would run before going about in circles trying to find each other.
Now that was a happy memory. Smiling Eresin made certain to try and focus on some of the trees so that he could mark a path to this waterfall. Coming out of the forest he had to appreciate the view. The water was clear and made a nice rushing noise as it porued into the stream below. Behind it too was a shadow…was that a cave? “A cave?” He found himself repeating his own thoughts as the girl nodded.
“Yup! I liked to hide there before he found out about it.” She glared towards the boy before pointing to some rocks, “You climb them and there you are.” She twisted to look towards Eresin, “Is that good enough for you to teach me…I mean us of course some tricks?”
“Hmm…I suppose so.” Eresin winked playfully before stretching out his hands, “So you see when you crouch down like this behind a tree you have to make certain that they start on one side and then slowly you move so that they never realize that you’ve been following them the whole time….”
As the children left to go play their games Eresin continued to scope out the area. With the cave in there he could hide some tomes and other supplies. It would be a great place to just rest as well as meditate. I suppose then that this will do just fine. Eresin smiled as he reached out a hand towards the cool waters. This he definitely could and would work with. He just hoped the extra time and patience would pay off for him in the end. Only time would tell, but there was one thing for certain. He was definitely determined to get this magic training all the attention it deserved so that one day he could be the one giving Kian a good busted backside. The thought was enough to make Eresin laugh before he went to go and try to meditate on his magic.

Thoughts
Eresin sat in the camp while looking through old letters and journals. “Oh, look.” He glanced through one notebook before holding a page up towards Peco, “This was when I first began all the training. So many notes.” The mage shook his head with a small smile, “I guess I have gotten better after all.” Even Kian was finding it hard to dodge some battles. Eresin still wasn’t at the stage where he could just dash in and recklessly throw magic around like his companion, but still he was getting there. Not that Kian would call it reckless of course. The thought made Eresin just roll his eyes before reaching over to ruffle the feathers of the baby kinfa perched nearby.
Still, there was something that bothered him. Talisia. Just the mere thought of the girl made Eresin’s cheeks flush a nice shade of purple. They had been living together and interacting so much lately that he was only feeling more certain of something. That something being of course that he was having emotions for the hybrid. Stubborn and wild to a fault, with a preference for creatures over earthlings, Talisia had managed to haunt him. Since he had saved her from menzuri Eresin had truly started to realize. It wasn’t just respect that he had for his childhood friend’s sister, but it was something more. Ugh. Eresin shook his head. Did he really really like her that much? “No way. I’m…” He glanced towards Peco who seemingly was staring him down, “Okay, I do like her!” But how did he confess? When did he confess? Would he ever confess? It was those questions that made the mage roll back into his bedroll with a groan. This was just silly. He was silly.
“Training. Focus on training.” Repeating the mantra in his head Eresin headed towards the waterfall that he enjoyed meditating under. It was a quiet place and a good area to just relax and focus. The waters rushing down over the rocks could easily make his mind be at ease while the isolation was good for keeping out unwanted company. Too bad it didn’t keep out the company in his thoughts. Flushing lightly Eresin continued to keep thinking about things rather than concentrating on his magic. When had he started to truly like her?
Or rather when had it become awkward from liking her? Since they had traveled together it wasn’t the first time that he had seen her mostly naked so that wouldn’t have been it. Though the thought did force him to pinch the bridge of his nose tightly. Stop, just stooooop. Then she had tried cooking a few times, he had ended up helping her so it felt almost like they were…Nope, nooooooope. And then when she had helped take care of him after a few injuries while training the touch of her fingers had left a lingering warmth. That warmth he continued to enjoy while adding to his ‘injury’ list. What am I a child going back and forth with little injuries to have them kissed? Now kissing was another topic that made his breath hitch. Could he even dare try that one day? Oh she would kill me. There was no way that he wanted on the bad side of Talisia! One look from her could send a grown man running, well at least if they were smart enough. As intimidating as Kian attempted to be it truly was Talisia that could send shudders down Eresin’s spine. Yet, at the same time she was such a good healer and had a gentle spirit. As long as you don’t piss her off.
“Ugh.” Here he was yet again zoning out during training to instead imagine Talisia. Shaking his head Eresin leaned back on the smooth rock so that the water could hit his face.
“Trying to wash yourself away?” Called out a teasing voice.
“Uncle!” Eresin sat up quickly and opened his eyes to stare at the other ice earthling, “What are you doing here?”
“Checking on you. Kian may be off for a bit, but that doesn’t mean you can slack.” The older sorcerer quirked an eyebrow towards his nephew, “Are you finding it easy to focus out here?”
“Ah…yes. Mostly that is.”
“Mostly?”
“I mean yes, totally.” Eresin glanced away before peeking back to Nerio, “Hey, uncle. Why did you never settle down?”
“What a random question.”
“Well, I was just curious! Mother had father, but you never had anyone that they spoke of.”
“Why do you have settling down on the mind?”
“N-no!’ Eresin shook his head before pointing a finger at the other man accusingly, “Stop trying to distract me. I’m asking about you!”
“Fine, fine.” Nerio raised his hands in surrender before jumping rocks so that he could stand next to his nephew, “I did have someone a long time ago, but it may surprise you.”
“Go ahead.”
“Irya, she was a wind earthling who loved to sing.” Nerio smirked at his nephew’s amazement, “Back in my day it was even more rare to find hybrids or to love another race. Obviously things didn’t work out, but that was because we were separated by a force greater than anyone in Tendaji.”
“What do you mean?” Eresin’s brow was furrowed as he stared at his uncle.
“Death, my nephew.” Nerio shook his head sadly, “We met when we were young as you know your grandfather was all about the trading business. We managed to find a path into Sauti and were partners there. I of course hated trading so I would go about my own way. One day I happened upon a beautiful girl who had a voice like a spirit. I was so entranced that I even tripped over my feet at our first meeting.” He chuckled, “Of course she wouldn’t let me forget that for days. But eventually I managed to woo her despite my short comings of a first impression.”
“How so?”
“I showed her the world of magic and gave her a beauty in life never seen before.” Nerio smiled sadly, “Flowers and ice crystals turned into flowers she loved those the best. Unfortunately, our families never approved of our relationship, but we did try to elope once. Probably part of the reason your mother thinks I’m an awful influence, but in the end our families won. She had been sickly this whole time you see. Her sickness ended up taking her away as an illness took over her body after trying to live with me in Zena.”
“Uncle I’m so sorry…”
“Nothing you can blame yourself for. Still, I promised her that she would be my one and only. Even though she tried to twist my arm into loving another I could never see anyone but her.” Nerio sighed before glancing over at Eresin, “So if you’re wishing to woo a certain hybrid I can teach you how to make ice roses. I’m sure even she would like such a gift.”
“M-me? Woo someone?” Eresin almost jumped off the rock, “I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’m too busy focusing on my studies for such silliness.” It was folly, right? He had to focus and train or he would never even get to the same level as other mages he had met. All those years being forced into trade rather than magical studies had truly stunted him. But at least he had talent and was starting to catch up. At least he hoped so.
“Don’t lie. Even a stranger can see how you gaze after her.” Teased Nerio as he stood up. “Shame I would love to see how your crystal roses look in comparison to mine, but I suppose if you don’t want to accept that you have feelings-”
“Show me then.” Eresin stood as he splashed through the stream after his uncle, “If you don’t think it’ll be a problem to my studies then show me…I want to be able to do something. Even if I don’t like her, because I’m not admitting I do, I still want to show her something beautiful. She’s so scared of magic all the time and I want to show her something different. So please, uncle.”
Nerio smiled, “Fine.” With that he opened his hands and with a breath ice mist formed into a delicate looking flower, “Irya was more fond of wildflowers than roses. So the actual flower is up to you.”
“Wow.” Eresin reached out and cupped the delicate thing in his hands. It was sturdy like crystal, but he was afraid that if he moved too quickly the thing would dissipate there in his hands. Would she like it? Could he even manage it? Determination shone in his gaze as he glanced towards his uncle, “I suppose our training is going to be more flowery today.” He joked lightly before reaching out with his own staff. It may take a few tries, but he was definitely going to try this and give her a gift!
Not simply because he liked her, but because he wanted her to see that there truly was beauty in magic.
