Jauhar looked the same as when she left it. But will the trees even recognize me now? She had to wonder about it while she wandered through the tall trees. Since leaving Jauhar she had grown so much and she felt completely different from the girl who had once lived in Zena. Become a beast tamer had been a tough decision, but she had yet to regret it. Even in battle the girl felt freer than she ever felt before.
As she looked around, Talisia glanced for her companion. “Are you okay back there?” She teased lightly as she twisted around the trees, “How is Jauhar?” Despite the worries pressing in on her heart, Talisia was trying her best to ease the tension that lingered around them. Even if her twin was out here somewhere it was still nice to finally be back in her second home. Oba had been interesting, but it wasn’t for her. The hot desert sands and the burning sunlight had nothing compared to the lush forest that surrounded them now. Even Zena with its tall mountains and gleaming snows held much more of a place in her heart.
She just hoped that this trip home would prove worthwhile, for both her and Eresin.

Eresin ducked under a branch and climbed over some roots. It wasn't necessarily an easy path Talisia picked, but it certainly was isolated. They hadn't seen life for hours, and Eresin was beginning to wonder when they would see anything, even a forest creature. Although things did seem a bit... too quiet. Perhaps it was all in his head though. Then again, I am a mage... It wasn't unlike him to sense that something was definitely amiss in this part of Jauhar. "I'm doing okay... This place is... very green." He hoped to get a chuckle out of her, for comedic relief. The air was tense with the recent ongoings of Talisia trying to find her twin, and Eresin looking for Nerio. Eresin didn't mind Jauhar, actually, but it was a huge contrast to what he was used to back in Zena. The cold mountain air and light to heavy snowfall, depending on the time of year. Eresin looked at her, stuck his tongue out and smiled. "So, We must be getting close, huh? I kind of miss seeing signs of life." He paused and looked at the nearest tree. "Well, other than this guy here and all of his friends." (201/1600)

“It’s still better than a desert mirage.” Teased Talisia lightly, “And I’m sure once you get to know them the trees will be great confidants. I’ve had my fair share of time with them after all.” The girl glanced back towards Eresin with a small grin. By now she was more used to his goofiness, considering all the time they had spent traveling together, and found that teasing him back could at times be fun.
“Honestly, I should have just stayed on the main trail that the caravans normally take. I just didn’t want trouble so I took that shifter’s advice on this older trail that not many people use.” The girl frowned slightly, “If there’s a clearing up ahead we can make camp for the day and rest up some. I’m actually feeling fatigued and based on how much we’ve been walking lately I would say that Neued should be only a day away.”
At least that was her hope.
They did thankfully find a large enough area for her familiars and belongings, “I’m going to go see if I can find a good source of water while everyone else rests. Alright?” She didn’t know if the mage would want to tag along or not, but she did leave the invitation open as she placed the rest of her belongings down and grabbed a jug. After all of that desert walking water was a precious commodity for her and she was thankful once more to be in such a ‘green’ place.

"Oh, I-I'll go with you." He knew she could probably handle herself, but he just didn't like the idea of leaving her alone. He would feel much more comfortable if she had a familiar with her, but they were all resting. It had been too long since their last break since Eresin told Talisia that he wanted to travel a bit more and take fewer rest stops. It made the journey a bit harder, but he felt it was well worth it, since they were making great progress. That often left everyone tired, however, even Eresin at times. Eresin put Peco next to Silva. "Alright Peco, you go on and protect Silva and the gang for us, okay?" He chuckled at the thought. Peco, didn't respond, though. Being so tired from the journey, he was all tuckered out. Eresin followed Talisia away from their camp. They walked for a bit in search of water. Eresin kept looking around the forest, searching for, well, anything really. There was still this sinking feeling. The air was too still in this area of the forest, and there weren't any signs of the local creatures. He sure as hell didn't like it. Maybe I should say something, but I don't want to be a bother, or paranoid... Still, He was a mage. He had a heightened awareness of certain things, and danger was one of them. "Um..." He started. "Do you have a strange feeling...? Like something isn't right?" (446/1600)

“You sure?” Talisia glanced back towards her companion. She knew that they all were pretty exhausted from their long trip. While she was glad that they were back in Jauhar the girl was especially thankful that they could take a break. Yet, Eresin was always so determined…shaking her head Talisia gave in. “Alright, let’s go then.” It was adorable how he handled his animals. The thought brought a small smile to her features. If she ever acted openly like that then there would go the rough image she tried to hold as a beast tamer. That and Silva would just stare at her like she was an idiot…More than likely.
Talisia frowned at the question Eresin posed, “Something feels strange?” They had walked a bit from camp and the girl had noticed the dead silence. Never had she experienced such a dead feeling in Jauhar before. “How far away are we?” Twisting on her heel the hybrid looked around, “The ground was damp a bit ago so I thought water would be ahead….but it looks like we’ve reached a dead end.” The ground was more rocky here it felt and the trees loomed close together above them.
What was this dark area that they had discovered?
Pursing her lips slightly Talisia’s hand floated down to the whip hanging at her side. Should anything happen then she would be prepared. It was awful though having to fight when they had traveled for so long the past few days. Her weary eyes were already beginning to play tricks with her mind. Was that a shadow that just passed by? “I think you might be right, Eresin.” Whispered Talisia slowly, “Something really doesn’t seem right here…”

Eresin examined a nearby tree. It was covered in white web, but there was something else about it... It semed to almost shimmer as he approached it. It's wet? but it hasn't rained in a while in these parts... Eresin couldn't help but feel a sense of foreboding. The liquid covering the web was scentless, and was almost like water to the touch. He dared not to taste it.
At that moment, Eresin heard a screeching sound from above him, and almost upon him and Talisia were 8 Menzuri. Eresin jumped aside, causing the beast to miss its bite lunge. He raised his staff and shot shards of ice at it, impaling it to the tree. As the other seven descended and landed on the ground in front of them, Eresin said to Talisia. "Hm... A whole nest of them. Are you ready?"
He jumped aside as three of them proceeded to lunge after him. He couldn't find an opening to counterattack, as their assault was relentless. They were hungry, that was for sure. I don't intend on being spider food though... He continued to dodge their lunges and found himself back to back with a tree. He gasped and circled around it, as one of the beasts crashed into the tree. That was his opportunity to strike back. He shot more Ice shards at them, hitting two of the three that were chasing him.
"Just one left." He said, almost as if he were taunting it. It fled up the tree and into the tree branches above, disappearing from view. as it moved from tree to tree, it made the whole tree tops rustle, making it hard for Eresin to tell where exactly it was. He looked around, trying to spot any sign of the beast, when suddenly the rustling stopped. All was silent, save for the scuffle of Talisia fighting the other beasts. That's right. I have to help her! He ran to go fight with her, keeping an ear out for the beast that ran away. I guess it ran off... He thought when he didn't hear anything pursuing him.

She had heard about strange creatures that lived in the darker parts of Jauhar. Yet, Talisia was not prepared for the eight legged crystal creatures that spat toxic fumes at her. “Were we supposed to be prepared?” She called back? A tight feeling surrounded her chest, especially as the ice shards spiked one of the creatures against a tree. That was right – her companion was a mage. Honestly it was the first time that she had seen Eresin use aggressive magic and so Talisia found herself momentarily distracted.
That momentary distraction nearly cost her as one of the Menzuri darted past – one of its crystal legs nicking her arm and drawing a fine trail of blood. Wincing, Talisia raised her whip and smacked it against another which had been coming closer. She didn’t have her familiars nearby, but it wasn’t like the girl was helpless. After all she had trained on her own and fought many battles on her own before this. She would have to focus and ignore the magic being cast next to her. This was no time to be afraid of her own companion!
Gritting her teeth Talisia moved forward and started to help Eresin by keeping the other Menzuri at bay. Those that tried to get near the mage found themselves sharply yanked away by a strong leather whip. Tally was also thankful that she had bought new leather boots and leather clothing to replace the light desert silks she had grown accustomed too. Certainly they kept her warmer during battle, but her movements were freer and her skin far more protected. The boots also allowed her to get in solid kicks which would inflict far more pain than the dainty laced sandals from before.
I just hope these don’t get ruined since I just bought them. The random thought was slightly amusing as she dove forward and kicked a straggler away from her companion. Oh no you don’t! There was something in the back of her mind, however. A warning that she had heard from some elders before she left Jauhar. There was something far worse than physical pain when it came to these strange creatures….or was she simply overthinking things? No, there had to be something…
Not that it should matter, most of the Menzuri laid on the ground or had limped away from the area. For once Talisia had to be thankful that she had a bit of magic on her side. Simple attacks probably wouldn’t have been as effective against the crystal beasts. It was scary to think of how dangerous the menzuri could be – anyone could easily walk past one should it remain still in the trees. From a distance it could be any other crystal growing throughout the forests of Jauhar.
Just like…a darting image caught her attention and the girl pushed past Eresin as he turned to her. “Eresin!” The Menzuri that had darted in the trees earlier was back with a vengeance, but it was Talisia who got the brunt of the strange attacker. Wincing, Talisia flung the menzuri from her arm but already her vision was dancing with glimmering lights. What was this? Flinging her arms out Talisia tried to push away the phantom visions that darted throughout the area.
Hallucinations?
Hadn’t they warned her of such things?
Wincing, Talisia tried to move but swayed – almost as if she were being pulled underwater. She knew it wasn’t real, but everything just kept changing around her. It was hard to keep up. Meanwhile the last Menzuri moved forward as if to finish off its prey.

Eresin kept running towards the area where they first started fighting. I'm sure she's okay. She can handle herself... It was then that he heard rustling in the treetops above him. He caught a quick glimpse of a shadow moving extremely fast above him towards the same direction he was running. No! I have to beat him there. He couldn't run any faster though. That was the downside to being a mage. Much of their prowess was in their mental and magic abilities, whereas their physical abilities lacked conditioning and endurance, though they can be agile and light on their feet.
Eresin's legs were already getting tired, and he even felt like he would collapse at any moment, his heart beating hard in his chest, and he was huffing from being out of breath. He heard Talisia call out his name and thought, I'm almost there... Hang on, Talisia! His legs felt heavier with each step, his feet meeting the ground with louder and louder thumps. If I don't collapse entirely before I get there...
Finally he reached the clearing and saw a few of the beasts on the ground, not moving, and Talisia and the remaining spider facing each other. she had a scrape on her arm, and seemed to be wobbling. Could it be...? All of a sudden, it clicked. The liquid on the web he saw earlier was some kind of poison. That would mean I have to help her back to camp as quickly as possible! He looked at the beast, ready to lunge. But not before dealing with this guy first...
Eresin ran once more towards Talisia, and at the same moment, it lunged after her. "No you don't!" In a fit of rage, Eresin used his shoulder with all his force and momentum to body the beast away from its path towards Talisia, and slammed it into the nearest tree. He jumped backwards, and readied his staff. As the beast rose, He used his basic mage spell to try to strike it, but it scambled out of the way just in time. This one seems much more clever than the other beasts...
There was a pause on the battlefield. They circled each other, waiting for the other to make a move. To Eresin's surprise, it screeched and spat a a fluid at him like a projectile. Eresin barely had enough time to react, but he was able to sidestep the attack. Slightly off balance, he almost fell, and then the beast took the opportunity to strike. It lunged after him and pushed him with its front legs, trying to knock him down and pin him to the ground. Eresin managed to pull up his staff and hold the attack at bay, preventing him from being pinned, or even falling to the floor. The beats's legs seem to grip his staff, and it tried to pry it away from him while trying to bite him with its mandibles, dripping with the poison it just tried to spit at him.
Eresin was growing increasingly frustrated with the beast. “Get off!” At the last word, he yanked the staff left, then right, and managed to pry it from the beast’s legs, then with as much force as possible, he bashed the beasts head with it, pushing it to the side, against another tree. Eresin then pointed the staff at it and used his ice spell to impale it. He took a few gasps as all the running and fighting finally caught up with him and the adrenaline started to die down. He and Talisia triumphed over their encounter. Oh, right! Talisia needs to be treated. He got up and ran to her. He saw her holding herself up against a tree, and rushed over. He grabbed her shoulders and looked her in the eye. “Talisia? Talisia! Are you alright?!”

Everything was spinning. While Eresin was fighting the last of the crystal beasts, Talisia found that her world was strangely moving. First it was all in slow motion and then the next second it was going in super speed. Her head pounding the girl reached out for anything to grab. Feeling something like slime she let out a sharp gasp before focusing. It wasn’t slimy waters; it wasn’t blood – it was just a tree. She had to keep repeating that everything was normal and that this was all a bad dream…images continued to swirl around her – her past, her present, some strange dancing creatures…all of it was so peculiar.
Yet, she could almost imagine that Eresin was fighting before her.
Actually he was wasn’t he? Hadn’t that been what put her in such a strange state? Wincing Talisia swayed forward as Eresin dealt his final blow to the menzuri. Was it truly over now? Out of all the beast battles she had ever fought Talisia felt as if this one had been the hardest. It’ll only get harder from here on out. The thought surprised her. Had everything been so simple before this? The stronger you become the more dangerous the foes that will challenge you. Talisia shook her head against the phantom images. Who even were these people?
Still, in her half-drugged state the girl found herself falling forward with her arms wrapping around Eresin. “Good job.” She whispered, her breath tickling his neck as she fell forward. I need a good rest after all of this now. Smiling faintly at the fact that they had survived, Talisia closed her eyes and allowed her world to fade into a comfortable darkness.

He looked at her wide-eyed after her compliment. "Thanks..." he replied as he held her up. As she passed out, he looked for signs of deadly toxins, but couldn't find any. He used a heal spell on her arm after laying her down on the ground, and chuckled in relief as her wound closed. "I guess you just need rest now... Phew." He sat there for a moment and looked around. "What a mess... Guess I'll have to carry you back to camp." As he moved to put his hand behind her head, he moved a fluffy white lock of hair from her face. She's so serene... He thought. He shook his head, blushed, and picked her up gently, and started to walk.
He walked for a bit through the forest towards camp. Even though she was asleep, he talked out loud as if she weren't. "I... I'm glad you're okay... I don't know what I would have done if... If you got seriously injured... I guess... I've grown to care for you much more than how we started out... Perhaps one day..." He trailed off as he approached the camp. He went over to her bedroll and gently laid her down. As he looked around, He saw all their beast friends still asleep. Guess I'll get the water on my own. Ah, well... He looked back at Talisia. Sweet dreams, Tali.
