Durza was in the middle of posting a new episode in one of his gaming commentaries, he was a bit of an internet celebrity in the gaming community. It was something he'd started up when he figured he might get enough money out of his job to keep up his apartment.
When the lights all went out, the video had just finished uploading. He figured he would have to get the landlord to fix the electricity or he'd never find out how many views it was getting. The whole building was dark... and so was the one out Durza's window. He frowned and moved to step out onto the porch, grabbing the railing as he looked out. The whole block was out of electricity, maybe even the city.
He was on the third floor, not too far of a drop but one that might knock him off his feet were he to try jumping. There were noises coming from the hall, people chatting. He opened his door to ask them if they knew what was going on. The group, a pair of girls, had their bags packed and looked like they were trying to run from something. One of them had torn fabric tied about their arm. They hurried into his apartment, babbling about monsters and getting him to lock his door.
The girls seem nice enough, even if they think its the end of the world. The two convince him to go along with them. Packing items and med kits into Durza's backpack. They figured he was the strongest of them and could manage the weight.
Something was moving out in the hall and by the looks of it, the girls didn't want him opening the door. They decided to take the time to introduce themselves now rather than later, as they might be running in a panic sooner than expected. The bandaged girl went by the name of May and her companion and sister was Lily. Lily pointed out that there was a tree outside Durza's porch that they might manage to jump to. Durza took a few steps and got a running jump, catching onto the nearby tree instead of letting himself fall all the way to the ground. Once he was sure the tree held his weight, he waved to the girls.
May was looking a little pale at this point, but it wasn't anything to worry about, right? Lily was about to make the jump, taking steps back for her running start, when May lunged at her. Durza was stunned by what he witnessed going on. He tried to get back to the girls but Lily screamed at him to go, telling him her number in the building and to go there, that she'd be fine. He didn't want to leave her, but she urged him to go.
He got to her room and picked the lock in time to avoid some unsavory people shambling along. He was on the third floor again now, but mayhem had started and he wasn't about to leave without Lily. How could everything go wrong in just one day?
