Chitons are small to large, primitive marine mollusks in the class Polyplacophora. There are 900 to 1,000 extant species of chitons in the class, which was formerly known as Amphineura. These mollusks are also sometimes commonly known as sea cradles or "coat-of-mail shells".
Chitons have a shell which is composed of eight separate shell plates or valves. These plates overlap somewhat at the front and back edges, and yet the plates articulate well with one another. Because of this, although the plates provide good protection for impacts from above, they nonetheless permit the chiton to flex upward when needed for locomotion over uneven surfaces, and also the animal can slowly curl up into a ball when it is dislodged from the underlying surface. The shell plates are surrounded by a structure known as a girdle.
Chitons live worldwide, in cold water and in the tropics on hard surfaces such as on or under rocks, or in rock crevices. Some species live quite high in the intertidal zone and are exposed to the air and light for long periods. Others live subtidally.
A chiton creeps along slowly on a muscular foot, and can cling to rocks very powerfully, like a limpet. Chitons eat algae, bryozoans, diatoms and sometimes bacteria by scraping the rocky substrate with their well-developed radula.
Chiton magninficus is a species of edible chiton, a marine mollusk, a polyplacophoran in the family Chitonidae, the typical chitons. Chiton magnificus' distribution ranges from the Galapagos Islands at the equator to Cape Horn at 55 S. It is found intertidally.

Other Form: When submerged in water, his legs fuse into a pale teal-green tail that holds the same iridescent sheen as spilled oil. His upper body stays the same, save six stripes that appear on his waist (three on either side). He does not appear to have gills, so one is lead to assume that his lungs somehow adapt.

Henri and Isabella live in a tiny Keeper's house just in front of the lighthouse itself. It is accessible only from a dirt path that runs from the road and up the small hill. Upon entering the house, one is immediately within the kitchen, which holds sprawling counters, a deep sink, a refrigerator, an oven, a microwave, a pull-out trash bin, and the only telephone in the house. Just beyond that is the dining room (or more so the little set of table and chairs) and the living room area with couch, armchair, television, and bookcase.
To the top left is Isabella's room with her simple bed, dresser, and toy chest. Below that is Henri's room (which is even more empty) with a queen-sized bed and a stout chest of drawers. Beside Henri's bedroom at the front of the house is the windowless bathroom which has a combination shower/bath tub and a toilet and sink with mirror.
The lighthouse behind the home is very simple, as lighthouses go. It is one
of the few manually maintained ones still in existence (although now all
Henri has to do is turn it on at night and off in the morning). It is tall and
white, striped black and perched on low rock structure lapped by water.
Within, it is nothing but a spiral staircase with a single empty room at the
top. Another staircase leads from there to the top of the lighthouse, where
the electric light can be turned on and off.
