Let Go

Gabriel was pretty sure he was making more out of Des’s attitude than was actually there. Or, well, he was desperate to think that was what he was doing.

Because if it wasn’t him making a mountain out of a molehill, then Des, despite his assurances that they’d never broken up and that he wanted to give Gabriel a second chance and that they were just taking things slow, didn’t love him anymore. It wasn’t too far of a jump, as far as he was concerned, certainly not as far as the ones he made in the conspiracy theories and tales of alien sightings he practically lived for.

To him, it really was simple. No matter what Des said, it was the subtle things, the little clues that to Gabriel were like blaring neon signs saying “I don’t actually want to be with you.”

It was in how he spoke - even though Gabriel had never stopped calling Des “Starshine,” Des’s affectionate nickname for him of “Angel”, the nickname he’d used even before they started dating, the one he’d later explained was practically code for “love,” was gone. Probably for the better, anyway, Gabriel had never deserved to be set up on a pedestal as someone’s precious angel, and he certainly didn’t now.

Every “I love you” was met with “I know,” which might’ve been cute if he were Han Solo, but in this case - it seemed a way to avoid “I love you, too,” because that would be a lie.

When they were Natron and Fangite, despite his warnings Fangite had always been playful, flirty, physical, even more than Des himself - and that, too, was gone. Patrols were awkward and businesslike, bad enough that he was considering telling Fangite to simply patrol on his own and call if he needed help, even though before he had delighted in every minute spent with his boyfriend.

And after what he’d done, after he’d kissed someone else, what seemed more likely? That Des would accept it and forgive him, or that Des would want him gone?

The latter, as far as he was concerned.

After all, everyone left him in the end. He really needed to just accept that was how it was going to be.

That didn’t make it hurt less. He could feel Des pulling away, and as much as he wanted to reach out, to pull him back, he was afraid to. Afraid he no longer had a right to. Alex had assumed with no further evidence that Des had dumped him for what he’d done. He had too. Honestly, it genuinely puzzled him that Des hadn’t - but maybe Des was worried about him; not loving him anymore didn’t necessarily mean not caring, after all, and perhaps Des was worried that losing him would end with Gabriel doing something stupid.

Not that he needed help doing stupid s**t.

In the end, Gabriel supposed, he would have to accept it - accept that Des didn’t love him anymore - and let him go, because clearly Des wasn’t going to do it himself.

He would just have to beat down the selfish, awful part of him that wanted to take whatever he could get, because all he wanted, really, was to see Des happy, to see him smiling and laughing and in love the way he’d been when they first got together.

Gabriel couldn’t make him feel that way anymore, so it was time to let go and let him find someone who could.

Last Will and Testament

It had been six months. Six months since his parents were murdered, and Gabriel had yet to sort through their things.

Technically, it had only been four since the investigation ended, he was cleared, and his inheritance was allowed to go through, but either way, it had bene a very long time. And now, he was speaking to his parents’ lawyer again, the one who had drawn up their wills, in order to draw up his own.

“Are you sure I can’t just leave everything to Des? I mean, people leave all their stuff to their cat, my boyfriend shouldn't be that much harder.” He pointed out.

“The lack of a formal arrangement between the two of you...complicates things,” the lawyer explained. He was a pudgy, older man, with white hair and thick glasses - an old family friend, for years and years. He had known Gabriel ever since he was born, practically, and had remained in contact with him even after his parents threw him out.

“I don’t know if either of us is ready for that, yet,” he said, and it seemed silly as soon as he said it - here he was, contemplating his own mortality, and he was worried about proposing? It still seemed too large a step, all things considered. Something to file away for later, if there was a later.

“Aren’t you a little young to be writing a will anyway? You’re only nineteen,” the lawyer said. Gabriel exhaled.

Sure, that was perfectly true. Most nineteen-year-olds weren’t thinking about what would happen if they died. But with everything going on, particularly given that he’d nearly lost his leg to foolishness and infection recently and he still wasn’t a hundred percent - death seemed all too real a possibility.

“I’ve confronted my own mortality a couple of times, lately. That crazy girl who killed my parents? She almost killed me, too. And...there’s been some other things. I know it's a little grim, but I’d rather be prepared,” he said, and he sighed. “You’ve always been a good friend, Mr. Bantam, and I know you’re just looking out for me - but this feels like something I have to do.”

“I’m sorry to hear that,” Bantam replied. There was a moment of silence, and then the lawyer reached into his desk and pulled out a piece of paper and a pen. “If you want to write a simple will, we can do that. You write it here, sign it, and I’ll notarize it as a witness. That should do. It’s not airtight, but there isn’t really anyone to dispute it.”

“Sounds good,” Gabriel said.

I, Gabriel Blake, he wrote, thinking of ever will he’d ever read in a book or heard on TV, being of sound mind and body, - for some value of sound, he thought to himself - do hereby bequeath all my worldly possessions and monetary assets to Desmond Winchester in the event of my death or disappearance for a period of longer than four months.

Because if they never found his body, Des should get his stuff anyway.

He signed it, and pushed it over to Mr. Bantam, who also added a signature.

“I’ll make a copy,” he said, and he did so, “and you can take that with you, and I’ll keep the original here, in my safe, so if it ever becomes necessary - God forbid - it will be easily accessible.”

“That sounds good,” Gabriel said, standing up and accepting the paper.

He walked out of the office with it still clenched in his fist, feeling at least a little bit reassured.

At least if he died, things were taken care of.

When he got back to the firehouse, it was quiet - a rare thing. Des, he supposed, was out buying art supplies, or something.

For a few moments, he sat on the couch, staring at the paper in his hand - carefully folded into thirds. Then, he sighed and dropped it on the coffee table. He’d deal with it later.

For now, he would curl up in bed, and use Des’s scent in his pillows as a comforting substitute for actually curling up in his arms until his boyfriend actually got home.
