P R P x R E F L E C T I O NNot Your Boyfriend, Baby Didn't know big ole groups of people just scurried about between places doing things they wanted to do, like dancing or singing or what else. Didn't know you could make a whole job and life out of it, neither. Cause it sounds pretty exciting to me. Not that I'm good at that kind of thing, but...
Think of all the places they get to see.
And it feels like they were put in front of me on purpose. Like the gods decided, "Hey, Aki, you're not such a bad kid, and you've been asking for this thing for a while. We're in a good and charitable mood, so if it suits you just fine, you might as well go ahead and jump on that." Dunno if anyone else is as eager for it as I am. Not like anyone in this bunch knows me, or anything, and Kan wants to go home, of course.
But I'm gonna stay. Or try to, anyway. I apparently got a whole lot of people to convince. Kan, for starters, then all of Nika's... old people? His dad and leaders and such, who I'm pretty skeptical about, in all honesty. But I'll end on a hopeful note:

G R O W T H x S O L O A Change in the Wind Was it considered 'imposing' on the troupe if he just decided to tail along behind them without any permission or acceptance? Probably. But this particular group of people didn't seem to terribly mind a very slight, one-person-addition change in plans. As far as Akiyal could tell, they changed courses all the time and did whatever needed to be done to keep the lot of them alive. They were a peculiar bunch, the only group Aki'd ever seen behave in such a way. And also strangely in line with what he'd always thought he'd wanted to do.
For as long as he could remember, all he'd wanted to do was travel. More than that, he wanted to feel free, unhindered by walls, rules, expectations, society, or anything else. He'd wanted to see the world and just let whatever felt right in the moment guide his footsteps. It was a long-term goal, of course, and one he knew full well he wasn't prepared to handle on his own now or even in the near future. If he'd grown up roaming the mountainous Sauti-scape with his mother, it'd probably be different. Unfortunately, he'd grown up with Xilarn, in a very dull and unimpressive village that didn't do much to help aspiring young boys in their plans for a more exciting future.
Akiyal didn't pretend to expect this troupe of dancers was the be-all and end-all answer to his life's dreams, but here he was, presented with the opportunity to come ever-closer to it just the same, and wondering how he dared to proceed with the rest of the morning. It probably wouldn't be a perfect fit. Gods, they probably wouldn't even like him, once given more than the span of a night to get to know him. Never mind that the young Wind boy still had yet to discern what he could actually do for them.
Certainly not dance. His twitch-like, non-rhythmic dance moves were only good for making young Alkidike laugh. So they were at least entertaining. Probably not in the way anyone wanted to see, though.
There were certain other factors that might hinder his progress, as well.
From the shade of one of Tale's tall, yellow-green trees, Aki watched the troupe pack up camp. He couldn't say he knew or fully understood all of theirs practices, yet, but greeting the day early seemed to be among them. Probably just as well, since they had quite a bit to pack and quite a few people to rouse before any of the day's traveling could be done. He wouldn't usually have been awake at this hour, himself, but Kan seemed as eager to move on as any member of the group.
"Hope you got all your crap," the older boy grunted as he slung a pack over his shoulder. Not that Aki knew what all 'crap' he was speaking of, except for what provisions the dancers could spare for two lost teenaged boys trying to get home. Since the vast majority of their things had been stolen in the same raid Kan's mother had disappeared in, they didn't exactly have many supplies to speak of. Which was rather worrisome, for the type of people who wasted time on such things.
Apparently, Kan was expecting an answer. He nudged the toe of his boot to Aki's leg. "Akiyal? Did you hear me? You gonna be ready to leave, or what? I asked around, and these guys say it'd take 'em two, maybe three weeks to travel back to Kesris with a group their size. Say it might only take us a week. Or it would, if we knew where we was going."
Clearly, his friend was not in the highest of spirits. Leaving him here would probably be the least companionable thing he could possibly do. Aki knew that, but it wasn't just Kan's future he was concerned with, at this point.
Akiyal rolled his shoulders, grunted noncommittally, and his gaze flicked away from his long-time friend. "What- ahh... What're we plannin' on doin'? Soon as we're away from here?"
"You know what we're doin,'" Kan grunted impatiently. "We're going straight home. Quick as we can. Yer dad'll be back by the time we get there. We'll tell him what happened. Tell him we got separated from my mom. He'll know what to do. He'll be able to find her. You said yer mutts could track people."
"They can, they can," Aki assured hastily, flicking his hand in Kan's direction as if this was some sort of added reassurance. "But what if my dad wasn't there when he got there?"
If Kan had ever managed to look suspicious, it was now. His voice dropped an octave, eyes narrowing skeptically as if he innately knew something was afoot. He had known Aki for nearing on a decade. Something was always afoot. "Why wouldn't he be," Kan demanded tartly.
Well, Akiyal had never told his father to stay away for a month, so if he wasn't around, it certainly wasn't the young Wind lad's doing. He shrugged. "I'unno." When Kan looked unconvinced, he insisted in a slightly louder tone, "I dunno!" But more onto the point. "But there ain't no reason for us to be there if he ain't neither, get it? Sauti's a long trip in the wrong direction, and if we get attacked on the way, that's kinda it for us, y'know?"
"That's the direction of home. It isn't the 'wrong direction.'"
"Is if you wanna find your mama." Kan's mouth snapped shut, posture slumping, and eyes falling to the ground. Aki waited a few seconds to see if there'd be immediate rebuttal. When none came, he continued. "We lost 'er in Tale, we're in Tale. Why would we leave now? Yeah, we ain't got help, and we dunno what we're doin'-"
"Is that not reason enough?" Kan grunted stiffly.
Admittedly, their attempts to reunite with Janella pre-troupe had not been especially fruitful. The boys were alone, lost, confused, unprotected, constantly starving, and the last time Aki had wandered alone across any region, he'd been six. A repeat of that was not welcome. But this wouldn't be like that because they could get home eventually, and Janella wasn't dead, besides, and he was smarter than he'd been when he was six.
"Might be reason if we didn't have help, but now-" He gestured ahead of them, to where the troupe was quickly finishing up the morning's packing.
Kan sighed. "We had a plan, Akiyal," he murmured. "It'll work best for us if we keep at it..."
It probably was still their best option. They'd made it this far without being attacked, and another week would probably be fine. Raiders wouldn't attack two kids with nothing and them, animals could be outsmarted, and even if Xilarn wasn't home, where he should be, at least the boys would know they were safe and have food and shelter on hand until he did return.
This, unfortunately, was not what Akiyal wanted.
With an exaggerated sigh, the younger male rose to his feet. He dusted the back of his pants and slipped an arm around Kan's shoulders. "You're worried, aren't you?" He questioned, as he gently settled his head against the top of Kan's. "You should be. Your mama's been abducted, and we dunno what happened to her or where she is now. She could be... captured, and I dunno about you, but if I was a bandit, I'd prolly take real special interest in a woman I'd gone out of my way to keep around."
"Akiyal..."
"I'm just saying, the longer we spend tryin' to keep outdated plans working is more time wasted. We have a different option now. A better one. Yeah, we could keep going and try to make it to Sauti, but we dunno how to get there. Could take weeks. And if something in our path got real hungry along the way, there wouldn't be much we could do about it, y'hear? And we wouldn't do no good if we was dead."
He could see hesitant, if not slightly fearful acceptance edging across Kan's face. No option was a perfect option as far as Janella was concerned, but as far as Akiyal's own interests went, this was probably better than the alternative.
The arm looped about Kan's shoulders tightened, and Aki gave the smaller, older boy a reassuring hug-shake. "Let's stay," he reasoned. "We won't have to fear for our lives while we search, won't have to travel alone, won't have to wonder if my dad is even home waiting for us, and we won't have wasted time if he isn't." Kan groaned softly. "Besides, Naeght is just as good a tracker as Gadot. Soon as he's back from letter-deliverin,' we'll have our own protection and be back on track to finding your mama. C'mon, Kan. This is the best way."
His friend did not seem fully, completely convinced, and Akiyal couldn't blame him that. They still didn't know this troupe especially well, never mind how they'd handle an impromptu addition, but Kan wasn't about to travel across Tale alone. Not without Aki. Of course he felt unreasonably pressured, but he didn't have much choice, otherwise.
"Fine," he mumbled. "But as soon as Naeght comes back, we're back on our own, got it."
"You bet!" Akiyal agreed amicably, tousling his friend's hair. "I wouldn't have it any other way."x x Results: Akiyal has never been especially blessed with opportunity when his long-term goals are concerned. He has always said how much he wanted adventure, always complained about feeling trapped, and never been as grateful as he ought to be for his second chance at life. As far as planning and strategy are concerned, he's not particularly talented at that, either. In a very rare moment of ingenuity, Aki decides to take matters into his own hands.
After spending a single night with a troupe of traveling dancers, it occurs to him that this is where the real adventure begins. Never mind his best friend's personal troubles of losing his mother and needing to return home. Never mind his father's very inevitable frustrations concerning where Aki is and why he isn't home when he said he'd be. As is becoming apparent, Akiyal's own desires come first. He manipulates his friend Kan into thinking that their best course of action is to stay with the dancers until his mother can be found. For Aki, this means a taste of the freedom he's craved for his entire life. Word Count: 1567

W O R L D x E V E N T x R E F L E C T I O NMysterious Wreckage He left me...
After everything we've done and as far as we've come, Kan actually left me. How does that seem fair? Where does he think he's gonna go? Back to mommy? She ain't at home. Prolly not even looking for him, neither. He just went and mucked up our adventure for nothing in return. Loser, diparse, ungrateful- Why does he think he's got somewhere else to be? I don't understand it.
But, I ain't about to feel bad about it. He left me cause he didn't care. I don't care about him, neither, and I don't need Kan around to enjoy myself. He was ruining my mood, anyway. Hope he don't ever need me again though, cause I sure won't be there.
In the meantime, there's enough around to make for some interesting things... I'm not going home, and I dunno the troupe so well, yet, but I'm learning. I'm not worried. Results: +5 Growth Points; Kan abandons Aki. Word Count: 816 JR Word Count: 153

W O R L D x E V E N T x R E F L E C T I O NCreepy Crawlers I came to Zena with the troupe, but I ended up on my own again. I dunno what it is with people, but they ain't very loyal, are they? My dad hasn't come after me, Kan left me, and now with the troupe... I guess I wasn't of enough use to them to merit keeping me around. But I don't care! I thought it'd be travel and adventure, and I'd get to see some cute girls dance, but it's always chores with these people!
So I decided I didn't want to work and they decided I best be on my way. Sometimes things happen like that, and now I'm hanging out alone in the cold... Since there's not much better to do (and I'd like to get paid), I decided to take up this old dude on his offer to help hunt some kinda funny creature in the mountains.
He was alright. Had a kinfa that could keep up with Naeght, at least, so he wasn't slowing me down. We didn't get to know each other too well, 'sides that he don't mind a lil competition, and neither do I. Think his name was Callum. Either way, the creature we were after turned out to be not much, just a freezing serpent on its last legs of life. There wasn't any of that 'glory' in finding it like he said there'd be!
So I told him he could just owe me one, this time. We'll see if we meet again. Results: +5 Growth Points; Akiyal meets Callum. PRP Posts: 8 JR Word Count: 250

I'm not a huge fan of doing what other people tell me just because they say so. As it turns out, I don't really care who "says so" or what they say, and big group gatherings like this are probably just full of people 'saying so.' But... I was in Zena, anyway, and there was enough excitement going on in such a group that I had to at least check it out and see what was going on.
Turns out there's some kinda danger underfoot. Bug monsters or dark magic wielders, or something like that, anyway. I'm not really scared of horror stories, so it seemed like nothing at first...
I got to meet up with Callum again! I guess old people don't got much better to do than scope out all the weird things going on in the world. Specially since when we last met, he was checking out weird monsters too. It's good that he was there, though... Even if I'm ot scared of no stories or no bugs, by the end of the meeting... Something happened. That thing came outta nowhere and stole a person! Just plucked 'em right up and was gone. I ain't scared of stories, but that wasn't a story. Saw it with my eyes, and I got family too, y'know? It'd be nice to make sure everyone was alright...
Since it's dangerous to go alone, I called in that favor I told Callum he owed me. He's gonna escort me back to Kesris, to see if anyone's there and if everyone is alright...Results: +14 Meta Points; Akiyal enlists the aid of a new friend. META Posts: 14 JR Word Count: 260

D E V E L O P M E N T A L x S O L O From the South Sauti was his home. Akiyal didn’t think he could rationally disagree with that sentiment, no matter how much wanderlust he held in his heart. It was true that he’d never wanted a sedentary lifestyle. He didn’t want to live in a box with his family, see the same sights every day, and keep up with the same menial chores that the farming village of Kesris required. That may have been where he’d been raised, and the tiny town was technically in Sauti, but he’d been born in open air to a woman whose soul was as fickle as a summer breeze. It was all of Sauti that was his home, all of Sauti that should’ve been his to traipse across.
But somehow crossing the border south out of Zena didn’t feel like coming home. It felt like expanding into a whole new territory. Which, admittedly, why shouldn’t it? He’d been kept in Kesris his whole life, and this was maybe the third time he would have even come to the border town of Liem. Not that there was usually any reason to at all. Liem was small (though not as small as Kesris) and seemed to be little more than a means to get Sautian goods to Zena and vice versa.
It seemed as though all of Sauti’s towns were small and uninteresting.
Why had he ever thought differently? It had always felt like once he managed to get out of Kesris, there would be more excitement, more to see, more to do. Maybe there was, just… not in town. Sautians clearly weren’t meant to live in villages. Akiyal wouldn’t have come to this one at all, except that there was apparently a peculiarly unexpected and dangerous excitement in the world that had led people to gather.
If he hadn’t already been in Zena with the troupe, he wouldn’t have known about it at all. Which might have been for the best. ‘Ignorance is bliss,’ and all that nonsense. Instead, he’d hitched himself to a new traveling companion in Callum, and the older man was kind enough to escort him south to Kesris, Aki’s home, where he expected his family to be… Traveling in pairs was supposed to keep the new threat at bay (though Aki doubted that, considering a sizable crowd hadn’t been enough of a deterrent to even one bug monster), and the Wind boy did enjoy the companionship of others.
He still wasn’t sure how he felt about returning home.
Whenever Akiyal’s thoughts first touched on it, his first impulse was to groan. He didn’t want to go back. What if he was stuck there again? What if his father was angry that he’d fled? Kan and Janella could be there, and he could hardly even stand to face them- Kan had abandoned him after they’d agreed to continue on with the troupe. He didn’t want to see them. He didn’t want to see anyone. But the situation was different now than it had been when he’d last seen Xilarn or anyone else. When Aki took a moment to process his thoughts, he was resigned to the knowledge that this had to be how it was. It would ease everyone’s mood to know where the rest of the family was. Kan and Janella may not live in the same house as Akiyal and his father, but Janella had been as much as a secondary parent as Kan had been a sibling. Xilarn surely agreed.
But if he thought about it too long, he lapsed from exasperation to resignation to anxiety. Any one of them might have been taken. They’d all gone their own ways, all been alone at some point for who even knew how long. And the last thing Akiyal had said to Kan, ’I don’t need you.’ The last thing he’d said to his father, ’I’ll leave you.’ And the last thing he’d said to Janella- He didn’t even know. But she’d actually gone missing. That was why he and Kan had set out together… To find Janella.
The last thing he did for his friends and family could not be to leave them behind. If his mind clung too adamantly to what ‘might’ have happened, he could work himself into such a panic that he almost couldn’t breathe. When he was sitting inside the inn he and Callum had taken up residence in for the night, it was like sitting in a box, and the sensation of suffocation was too much.
It led him outside.
The air here tasted like winter. Liem may not be in the heart of the mountains, or even in the snowy region at all, but the northern winds still had such a crispness to them that breathing too deeply stung the back of his throat. The scent of firewood was in the air, and the townsfolk dressed in wooly layers. As much as Akiyal preferred summer, he didn’t hate winter, so if not for being such a woefully boring place, Liem might not have been so bad.
Naeght seemed to enjoy it. Akiyal’s raptrix had a bit more dignity than his father’s did (or so Xilarn told his own pet in a cooing baby voice), but the playful flick and tease of the wind must have inspired some excitement in him. He wasn’t the hyper or chattery sort, but he didn’t need to be to know there was some sort of pleasantness in his demeanor. It was in the flutter of his feathers, the high hike of his paws as he trotted, and in the way his snout stuck close over Aki’s shoulder as they walked- near, so that whatever they undertook, they may do so together. Excitement- no, anticipation.
Bwoof. With Naeght’s maw so close, the vibration of the sound brushed over Akiyal’s ear. His raptrix did not often have much to say, and usually what came from him were only warnings, low growls and discontented rumbles. But this sound was a clear one, a single note, high enough to travel a distance farther away than Akiyal’s ear. It was a bit too close, really, and quiet dignity or not, the raptrix still smelled like a mutt.
”Can you gimme some space, or what?” Aki griped, knocking his elbow into Naeght’s chest and nudging backward as he stepped away from the encroaching canine. ”Weirdo,” he accused with a terse scoff. The raptrix’s tail flicked. His head cocked. And then-
Yarf, yarf! Yyyyarf!
Akiyal’s lips twisted into a confused frown. That sound definitely hadn’t come from Naeght. So what had come from his beast only a few moments prior certainly hadn’t been a warning, or rather, not a warning of danger. But one of greeting. Despite Aki’s nudging, Naeght stepped forward, trotting past him with a flutter and caress of wings to Aki’s shoulders that was gentle enough to almost be something like an apology. He stepped around the Wind boy and move toward the yipping. In the next second, a great mound of tawny fur appeared from behind the stone corner of a house. It promptly pelted forward and charged them, chittering the whole way.
Rather, it ran for Naeght, but Gadot and Akiyal had never been on the best of terms. Even on simple letter delivery missions, the fluttery pup tended to deposit what he came to deposit and back out as quickly as possible. But he was always pleased to see Naeght.
Akiyal wasn’t sure if seeing Gadot was good news or bad. He hadn’t received word from his father in some time, so having Xilarn’s animal companion in front of him could mean practically anything: that he was well but concerned for his son’s whereabouts, that he’d been separated from Gadot and was now actually alone, that he wasn’t well at all and his beast had needed to come and find Aki as a means of support. Which was even the preferable option here? Akiyal couldn’t say, and since Gadot couldn’t speak for himself, Aki set to searching for scroll cases or tucked bits of parchment.
The beast wasn’t wearing a collar, nor the side satchel that he sometimes carried when Xilarn sent him on a message delivery. He didn’t seem to be wearing anything besides the small tag around his ankle. Immediately, Akiyal’s thoughts shifted to the worst. This is how Gadot would come to him if he’d had to do so unexpectedly and without preparation. Aki dipped to the ground, and reached to unfasten the tag from the raptrix’s paw.
He’d barely touched it when a shout distracted him. “Hey, you! Boy, you better get away from there!” A woman turned the corner Gadot had just emerged from. She strode forward with an air of confidence and bossy expectancy that Akiyal didn’t often see. With her sun-kissed caramel skin, deep brown hair, and, most notably in the moment, a scowl… Clearly not of this land. An Oban woman. “Stupid beast,” she complained as she approached, waving her arms in front of her as if shooing something, though Akiyal couldn’t tell if it was meant for him or the mutt.
Either way, he scowled back.
”Why don’t you back offa bossing me around?” He snapped. Weirdo, foul-tempered lady coming up on him and thinking she could tall him to not touch his beast! Whether Gadot liked him or not, the dumb raptrix was still his… His family and all.
The woman squinted at him, miffed, but didn’t immediately launch into an argument. She looked at him with piercing red eyes, gaze scraping from his face to his fingers where they touched at Gadot’s tag, to the dopey tan raptrix with his tongue lolling out of his mouth and his tail flapping, and then up once more to Naeght, standing close at Gadot’s side with their flank’s brushing and head tilted close. Her attention went back to Akiyal. “What’s your name, boy?”
She sounded suspicious, but no longer overwhelmingly bossy.
Somehow, that made Akiyal more wary. He’d been to Oba and had had opportunity to meet its people… It turned out he didn’t really get along too well with most desert-dwellers. His father’s family had been insistent that a dirty Wind boy was a sorry excuse for a son. They were too proud to muddy up their lineage like that- and how dare Xilarn give their name to windling scum? If they’d had their way someone like Aki would grow to be a servant and nothing else- But they hadn’t had their way, and Akiyal knew that Xilarn had been just as offended. He knew because of course his father hadn’t said nothing. When he was riled, he was aggressive and mean, and he’d of course told his parents they were ridiculous traditional fools and that he didn’t need or want anything from them-
Aki swallowed. All of these thoughts flicked through his mind in the matter of an instant. He’d blamed his father for exposing him to those people and felt a prickly distrust for Obans as a result… Xilarn had defended him, though, and Aki had told him to stay away from him.
It wasn’t his dad’s fault, of course, and that thought came to him so strikingly in the moment that he liked at this woman, that he hardly thought of not answering, and when he did, it was quiet. Filled with some kind of confusion and remorse mixture that tasted like salt. “It’s… Akiyal,” he murmured.
His gaze had fallen to the ground, but the sound she made, an inhale and- squeal? made him turn sharply back to her in time to see a wide smile break out across her face. “Akiyal!” She repeated. And then, most unexpectedly, she was before him, with her arms around his neck, and- gods she was short. “I’m so happy to have found you! I was worried I might not be able to, and Xilarn would be so disappointed. I don’t think he ever would’ve spoken to me again if I hadn’t been able to bring you back… Oh.” While her hands stayed on his shoulders, she leaned back enough to scrutinize him. “My name is Ahdaia. I’ve been looking for you.”x x Results: Akiyal meets up with his aunt Ahdaia for the first time. Word Count: 2027

W O R L D x E V E N T x R E F L E C T I O NStrange Weather I still don't think I like her. She's my aunt, to some degree, I guess, but liking her, liking any of my dad's family is just... real hard. Maybe she and all other Obans are 'once you get to know them' sort of people, but getting to that point is a road of frustration? I still get the sensation she thinks she's better than most everyone she meets in Sauti, and she's got a real familiar 'I know better than you' attitude, so that's pretty annoying...
But she's family, or I guess she's trying to work her way up to that standard, and the 'trying' part is more than any of my dad's other relatives have done, so it must count for something. I dunno what brought her here exactly, but I guess she managed to convince my dad she wanted to do something to help, and he must want me home pretty badly, even though he isn't there, himself.
I don't think Ahdaia would make all this up, so if she hasn't, then she's already put in a lot of effort: leaving Oba to find him, traveling across the countries to find me, getting me home, and staying here away from her own children to make sure I hang around long enough to see my old man...
I was on my way after the Dretch thing, anyway, so she really doesn't need to bother, but still... I wonder how long it'll be before he's here...Results: +5 Growth Points; Sauti is getting a lot of rain. Word Count: 879 JR Word Count: 246
