"I'm tired, Kan," Aki griped stiffly, lumbering along behind his smaller friend as Kan shoved his way through thinning Tale foliage.
Three days after the raid and no one was in any higher spirits. Kan's distress was at least understandable. While Akiyal had managed to convince him that his mother wasn't dead, the other Wind boy was still single-minded in his focus to catch up with the bandits and find her. Aki would've preferred not to. However, since he wasn't near as familiar with the land as Kan, had no hope of reading a map or the stars, and hadn't ever trusted his survival skills on his own, he was forced to stay by his friend's side. Even if he was tired, dirty, hungry, in excruciating pain from his yet-to-be-healed broken wrist, irritable, and lost, at least he wasn't any of that and also alone.
It was doable, if not favorable. "Shut up, Akiyal," Kan spat back as he trudged along. Aki rolled his eyes. Not favorable in a lot of ways apparently, and he wanted to comment such that this would be a more enjoyable experience for both of them if Kan would try and be a little more personable. But he didn't, because the boy ahead of him stopped. Kan glanced back toward Akiyal. "Do you smell that?"
His first impulse was to say 'no,' nothing seemed out of the ordinary to him. Instead he leaned forward, resting as much of his weight against Kan's back and inhaled. "Fire?" He questioned. As he caught the vague aroma of smokey meat scent. "Food. And-" If they quieted and stopped aggressively breaking any greenery in their path, he could actually hear the soft, rolling hum of chater some several yards away. "People," he concluded at last.
"A camp," Kan agreed, grabbing the front of Akiyal's shirt and yanking him along. "Let's go."

After Nikaio’s troupe had spent some time in Jauhar, most of which Nika had spent practicing the moves he’d learned from Kalli, they had decided to head back to Tale. The trip back was more exciting than the trip from, as Nika couldn’t wait to try his dance moves the next time the troupe set up a show. Which would be in Tale. When they reached their destination, the sky was already turning dark. And without a town or village in sight, they decided to make camp for the night. With the help of all those able, it didn’t take long for them to set up and settling in. Food was hunted for by a few older men and the fire was started up for when they came back. Nika had slipped on his dancing clothes, determined to get a dance in that night. Gathering up a couple of other dances, they quickly agreed, eager to dance around the fire that night. Once the hunters returned and the meat was cooking, Nika and two others began to show off their dance moves. As the music began to filter through the night, Nika glanced between his two dance partners and grinned. “Shall we?” he said as the took their place. It didn’t take very long before Nikaio was lost in the music and letting his body lead itself in the dance.

His first impression upon seeing a conglomeration of strange people around a campfire in the middle of nowhere? They were a bunch of weirdos. Akiyal wasn't especially familiar with how people in Tale lived, but it didn't exactly surprise him to find a tribe of- his gaze flicked around to all manner of races he'd probably only seen a handful of times in his life- refugees? From the wars past? Living out here because they didn't feel safe anywhere else? No, it didn't seem surprising. And none of them looked especially depressed.
Just a few inches ahead of him, standing in the fire-flickering shadows cast by a large tree, Kan hesitated. He shot Aki a wary gaze. "Y'know, I don't think people that live out in the wilderness are especially fond of being intruded upon by strangers..." He grumbled quietly.
Akiyal just shrugged. "Said I was hungry, and look," he pointed toward the fire, where three of the group had taken to dancing. Aki grinned. "They seem happy enough to me. Besides, I-" He moved just barely to rub at his injured wrist and winced, regretting that choice all but immediately. "It's either this or keep wandering around in the dark til something less capable of people-speech finds us."
It was a reasonably compelling argument, so the two boys found themselves edging out of the trees and closer to the fire.

Nika had absolutely adored the way Kalli had moved. He had watched and learned from her and in such a short amount of time. He had even remembered her tip about her clothing and jewelry making music. It hadn’t taken him long to seek out the supplies he had needed to create his own clinky jewelry. Wearing them tonight wasn’t necessary but Nika had slipped them on anyway, right before the trio had begun to dance. Kalli had been absolutely right. The soft clink of the metal lended an extra something to his dance. When Nika swirled around, and as the music started to die down he thought he’d caught a glance of something moving off in the distance. He blinked, dance cut short as two figures emerged from the shadows and into the light of the fire. He quickly grabbed hold of one of the others who’d been dancing with him and whispered, “Look, over there.” Nika’s lips pursed together as the music stopped all together and, one by one, everyone’s attention moved from the three of them and over to the two newcomers. Nika’s father, closest to where the two men had come out of the trees, stood and spoke first. “We don’t want any trouble. We’re only here for the night. We’d appreciate it if you kept on moving, hm?”

Akiyal might have laughed, but the first snort-huff of amusement that left him earned him a jab of Kan's elbow into his ribs. But really, Kan should laugh too. He didn't know what kind of trouble these people were expecting from two teenage boys, but since they did clearly expect it and felt the need to vocalize how little of their presence was wanted, he had to assume none of them were especially proficient in dealing with troublesome boys. And he also had to wonder if they'd had similar instances with being raided as he had.
Kan held up his hands with a tiny shake of his head as he looked to the man that spoke to them. "That's... just it. We're not lookin' for trouble, either. In fact, we're," He rubbed the back of his neck and glanced to the ground, "in a spot, ourselves. We don't live around here and we got separated from my mother a few days ago and haven't found her, and- Well, you haven't seen anyone like that asking around, have you?"
Unfortunately, Kan and Akiyal didn't have the same priorities. "We're not real interested in navigatin' the trees on our own, and I'm starving-"
"Aki," Kan hissed in warning.
A warning that went ignored. "Ya'll look like you're having a good time, and since we're here and got noplace else to be, can we join you?"

Nikaio watched the interaction between the two strangers and his father. At the mention of them getting separated from the one’s mother, Nika’s heart stuttered and sank. He knew those feelings all too well. And though they were old feelings, from when he was little, they were definitely ones he would never forget. Nikaio found his body moving forward of it’s own volition. When he reached his father, he put a hand on his shoulder and leaned up to talk to him. “C’mon, they can’t be much older than me, if that. Wouldn’t you want someone to take care of me if I were lost?” Those words earned a frown from his father and a small huff. Nika knew he had hit a chord with his old man and grinned when his father agreed to let the two boys join them. “It’s too bad you came when you did. A little earlier and you’d have seen me dancing.” Nika grinned at the two as he motioned them forward and pointed to an empty log by the fire. “But you showed up just in time for food, at least. There’s plenty to go around.”

Was it strange that he was slightly put-off by the thought that these people intendedto turn away two teenaged boys because they...? Well, he didn't know why they would. Maybe this traveling bunch was just deeply suspicious of anyone they met in the later hours of the day, regardless of age or aptitude. And though Akiyal's first instinct was to argue the point, he found he didn't have to because some younger man blue-skinned and dark-haired, stepped forward to talk some since into the older man. This was about as much as Aki could make out. More specific features weren't exactly super noticeable from this close a range.
Aki's crystal gaze slipped up the young man's figure, then back down, and he let out a soft, amused grunt as his lips quirked into a grin. He decided he didn't need to concern himself with the fact that he might not have been allowed to stay.
"Well, y'know, we might have been hanging back for just long enough," he chuckled, with an extraordinarily necessary flick of his tongue across his bottom lip.
Kan was less impressed. He gave a tiny frown and a dip of his head toward the older Water male. "Thank you for your hospitality," he murmured.

Nikaio raised an eyebrow as he watched one of the strangers look him up and down and then settle back down onto his face. At his words, Nika couldn’t help but grin. “Maybe ya can get a better show some other time. If ya stick around that is.” At his father’s grunt, Nika blinked and glanced towards the older man. Nika hummed and placed his hands behind his back and turned to join his dance partners, and the rest of the troupe, around the fire. The instant he was back with the group, his female dance partner leaned in and began whispering and asking about the two newcomers. Nika couldn’t help but chuckle at her enthusiasm and obvious lusty interest. He indulged her, however, not being one to oppose some nice, juicy gossip. Nika’s father nodded at the other boy as his son disappeared off back with the troupe. “It is no problem. My son, pain as he is sometimes, is right. I could only hope that someone would care for him if he were to be out on his own and lost or separated from us. Come, join us. You’re welcome to spend the night at our camp and the journey with us when we pack up, if it pleases you. As long as you don’t cause trouble, we can escort you to the next village or city.”

How long did they plan on staying? Akiyal scratched his nail against his cheek and glanced skyward. Probably not long, if Kan's mental state was any indication. Poor boy had a goal and side trips were not welcome. And to be fair, Aki wasn't especially interested in traveling around with a bunch of- his eyes trailed after the Water boy as he moved to take up a perch next to some ladies in equally... intriguing attire- dancers, apparently. He grinned, and fisted the fingers of his good hand in the back of Kan's shirt before tugging him toward the fire.
The older boy had just enough time to assure the troupe's leader (presumably) that they wouldn't cause an issue if they could help it, before he was pulled to Aki's side. "You could have a little patience, and maybe an ounce more respect, and-"
He cut off with a muted grunt as Akiyal twisted and shoved him toward one of Water-boy's female friends. Aki himself decided to start somewhere that he'd already had a conversation going. He leaned in close to his new friend and quirked him a pearly-toothed smile. "Y'know, pretty boy, I don't think I quite caught your name."

Nikaio’s conversation with his female dance partner had subsided the instant the two new strangers had started making their way over to them. She was way too busy eying them both to pay any mind to whatever Nika had to say. He huffed and turned his attention to his male counterpart and grinned as he easily picked up on a conversation with him. That was until he felt the unmistakable movement of the log he was sitting on and raised an eyebrow as he glanced over to the stranger that had checked him out. “Mmm, perhaps because I didn’t give it to you.” With his body closer to the other matori boy’s arm, he felt him tense at the intrusion and heard the small huff and could only imagine the pout the boy’s lips were making. This mental image managed to distract Nika for just a moment before he regained composure. “Seeing as how you and your friend are the intruders, don’t you think you owe us your name first?”

That other boy, pretty-boy's male friend, managed to look decidedly unenthused by Akiyal's presence. Which was, of course, complete and utter nonsense. There was plenty of him to go around. Aki tried not to laugh as he stepped around in front of the log. Something about pouty teenaged boys seemed ever-so-slightly intriguing. So he grinned and slid (quite unceremoniously actually) onto the bench, and managed to wedge himself in between the two male dancers in their pretty, shimmery, jingling clothes.
"'Intruder' is kind of a mean-sounding word, ain't it? Makes it sound like you think I'll do something nasty to ya." He tipped his head and winked at Mister Pouty before turning his attention back to his original target.
All these Water boys kind of looked exactly the same to him though. He squinted.
"Anyways, if you insist on gettin' to know me first, the name's Akiyal. And I'd think I've caught a bit of luck 'intruding' on you, as it was. Could've been wandering out in the woods all night with the bugs and serpents, so thanks for your input back there."

Nika couldn’t help but let a little snort of a laugh escape his lips. He really did like feeling wanted like that. It was even better when the other party was jealous. Things were a lot more fun, afterwards, when that happened. When the stranger spoke, though, Nika blinked and glanced away from his friend. He’d almost forgotten that he had sat down. “Nikaio,’ he said, in response to the boy giving him his name. “And it’s no problem.” Nika shrugged as he spoke. “My father sometimes forgets that, at one point, we were the wanderers that were looking for a little help. Were it not for this trope, I’m not sure how far we would have gotten. Though I understand his need and want to be cautious. You can never be too careful at times.” Nika excused himself for a moment and fetched them all three something to drink, sinking back down in his former spot and handing over the cups. “So you’re looking for your friend’s mom, hm?”

What exactly was he interrupting between these two little fishies for these facial expressions, anyway? Miffed and annoyed from one and then relatively clear amusement from the other. Akiyal decided the second path was the most appropriate to take. He grinned, and shot the look first to one boy, then to the other; Nikaio, as his name apparently was. "Good to meet you, then, Nikaio, I guess," Aki replied with a shrug. The circumstances could've been more favorable.
Crystal eyes narrowed at pretty-boy's further commentary, though Aki managed to hold his tongue while Nika stood, departed, and then returned with drinks to pass around.
He took the offered cup, then felt an immediate need to inform his new companion, "We aren't wanderers. Makes it sound like I don't got someplace to be, and I do. I have a home and a dad and such, just got a little turned around on my way back." And also nailed with some unexpected happenstance. He sighed and shook his head. "Yeah, I guess we are. Dunno how much luck we'll have there, but-" He knew he ought to be more considerate of Kan's feelings. Akiyal was familiar with the feelings of losing a parent. Still, the immediacy of the trouble was lost on him.
"I'm not too worried. It'll work out."

Nikaio took a swig of his drink and then shook his head. “I didn’t mean anything by it. You can have a place to go back to and still be a wanderer. It’s great you have someone to go back to, though.” Nika took another drink before sitting his cup aside and grinning. “Though being a wanderer is kind of cool to. Ya get to meet all kinds of people and see many different places. Have some fun here and there.” Silence fell between them for a bit as Nika stared off into the fire. He sighed before speaking up again. “I do hope you’re able to find her. For now, though…” Nika’s words trailed off as more noise began to ripple out from those closer to the fire. “Looks like the food is ready,” he said on a grin.

He was deeply skeptical of whatever substance was actually in this cup. Akiyal sniffed at the liquid warily, then shot a glance around fish boy and toward Kan. Unfortunately, the sight of the other Wind male offered Aki no additional knowledge. He set the cup aside, on the ground near his feet and gave a roll of his shoulders. Truth be told, he'd never been especially content at home.
These current circumstances weren't ideal, no (he flexed is arm, and a burn shot from his sprained wrist up the length of it. Never mind the dirty, lost, hungry, and mostly alone bits), but he'd always fancied the idea of roaming and exploring. He hadn't had that type of freedom since he was a toddler, years and years ago now. So even if he didn't remember it in explicit detail, it still felt like something he wanted. Something he'd always wanted, and something he couldn't have with his stationary family.
Kan wouldn't be pleased if he mentioned any such thing now.
Akiyal hummed. It was something he'd need to address soon, but perhaps after a quick snack and maybe sleep. "Alright," he chirped, glancing from Nikaio toward the fire. "I could definitely use a bite. Ya'll don't eat a buncha weird stuff, right?"
