Painted Moose

After more than a single week spent in the Zenan snows, Akiyal was finally starting to understand how much he hated this place. Once the novelty of new wore off, Zena was just a cold, bleak, sad little splodge of mountains right at the tip of the world. Anyone who claimed to like the place was a moron, and anyone who hated themselves enough to live here... Well, they probably didn't need a teenage boy to point out their life's mistakes.

The day found Aki once again shirking his already meager responsibilities. Yeah, yeah, the troupe leaders told him all about how they were a 'family' and how he was expected to contribute more to the group's welfare, but Akiyal wasn't especially interested in all that.

Not that Zena offered much to occupy himself with, either.

Just a lot of rocks and grey sky and snow seeping through his boots. What an abysmal place. Fortunately, the dancers were always keen on sticking close to town, and even if this town wasn't the most amusing place, it at least sported a little wooden pub that housed a fire right in the main room. And warmth was something Aki could get behind.

As he entered the premises, he found that he wasn't the only one after such things.

Callum had long since grown accustomed to the frigid north. He tromped through the snow like a true Zenan, even though he had only lived here during the length of his children's lives. Although he preferred warmer climates, where one could get by with wearing much less clothing, this place had a charm of it's own.

Mostly because it wasn't Oba, but he was biased.

Today he was settled in the great room of a cozy little inn, contemplating his next move. He had promised Nimueh that he wouldn't chase anymore strange creatures, and yet, the rumors had given him enough curiosity to edge around the promise he'd made to his lover.

He would go, just not alone. Surely that would make Nimueh happy?

Happy with this decision, Callum knocked his stein on the table top, calling a sort of silence in the room around him. After explaining who he was and what he was planning to do, he looked around the room with an expectant sort of smile, "So, whose interested? I don't expect anyone to do this for free; I can pay."

What did Zenan's even eat? He knew he wanted something hot and that didn't consist of dried meat and grains, but... Aki peered around at the other inn-goers, trying to scope out what precisely they were eating and finding that he wasn't too thrilled with the prospects. Maybe just a warm drink instead, something with a little burn to it that his father would no doubt disapprove of. It wasn't too early for that, was it? Sometimes the rules for this type of thing escaped him.

By the time he'd summoned a barmaid and had his drink in hand, the rest of the room had gone silent, save for an earthling man that looked just barely normal enough to be trusted. If it was any other day, he likely would've blown the man off. Usually Aki didn't feel pressed to find work.

But as it turned out, hunting sounded better than his usual chores, and there was the off-chance it would yield something edible (though he tried not to get his hopes up for that). He wasn't afraid, he was looking for adventure, and... Well, he did like the sound of getting paid. And since there weren't a great many others leaping at the chance to go out into the cold on a stranger's whim. Y'know, what the hey? Aki didn't have much to lose.

Drink in hand, Aki sidled up to the older man and slid into a seat across from him, grinning in what he hoped was more of a friendly than creepy way. "Sounds like we're in the same boat. Need somethin' to do, lookin' for a little excitement. I'm in."

Though why anyone would want to take a dumb blond teenager anywhere with them...

It didn't take long at all for Callum to be joined by a promising looking youth. He smiled back to the boy, hoping to keep the interaction as friendly and chipper as possible. "Wonderful. My name is Callum, and I'm ready to leave out any time you are. I would prefer to go as soon as possible, but I understand if you need time to prepare."

Maybe it was the drink in his veins that gave his body the warmth and pep it needed to think this was a good plan. Whatever the reason Callum was happy and ready to take on the challenge at hand.

Besides, this teenager looked hearty enough to give their prey a run for it's coin.

Callum. Now that they were closer, Akiyal took a moment to fully scrutinize his company. From a distance, he would've thought the man a pureblood, with pale skin and silver-blond hair and misty-crystal colored eyes. But no. Nearer the traits, and his ears, obviously weren't of Aki's own native ancestry. He drummed his fingers on the tabletop and wondered if he ought to feel any sense of distaste for the fact that a hybrid would be so bold as to bring so much attention to itself in public.

However... Well, the man wasn't young, and not especially unattractive, despite probably being closer to his father's age than Aki's own. Wasn't there some saying somewhere? 'Fortune favors the bold.' No fear or hesitance, and no nonsense.

Aki decided he liked him.

"Ah, I don't got nothin' to prepare," Aki replied with a shrug. "Already came out this far, and the weather ain't unbearable yet. Plus, I ain't a scared of no animals. I think we'll be alright. So, you wanna go now, ya said?" Oh, right, and since the man had given his name... "And I'm Aki. Good to hunt with you. Sir," he added as an afterthought.

Callum, as a general rule, tried not to let the opinions of others sway his moods. The patrons of this particular tavern were acquainted well enough with the hybrid that his exuberant nature was passed off as the 'norm'. Many of the other patrons continued on with their drink, happy enough to pass him on to another this cold, Zenan day.

So, since Akiyal hadn't yet commented on his strange appearance, to Callum that was as good as saying 'you're weird, but that's okay'. "Excellent." The swordsman removed several coins from his bag and placed them onto the table; enough to cover the boy's tab as well as his own. He slipped off the bench seat, adjusting his clothing as he went, the array of jewelry placed about his person making several little 'chiming' noises as he moved.

"Tell me, Aki, how opposed are you to flying?"

As Callum moved toward the door, Aki's face split into a grin. He tromped after, and a loud, scoffing 'tccchhh' of a sound left him at the older man's question. "Opposed?" Akiyal retorted, smirking. "Can't say I am. Prolly been at it longer than you have, anyway," he jibed, poking a finger against Callum's shoulder. It was one of the very few things he had plenty experience with. He'd been flying with his father practically forever. Only since he was a kid, to say the least! Although, given the number of years that separated he and the hybrid, Akiyal decided not to bet that Cal didn't have just as much.

Once outside, Aki's crystal gaze flicked about for his beastie. 'His' inasmuch as that Naeght was by his side in this moment, though his loyalties seemed... shaky at best, though maybe that was just where one dumb Wind boy was concerned. When Akiyal whistled, the raptrix lifted his head from where he lay against the face of the building, stared at him for a long moment, then rose to a stand, looking far more dignified than Xilarn's raptrix ever had.

As the creature approached them, Aki tsked and swished his hips to one side. "This is Naeght. And I bet you can imagine how much flying practice he's got. I ain't scared of heights or whipping wind or falling or any of that. Guess if I was worried about something, it'd be leaving you behind in the dust."

"Oh I highly doubt that." Callum chuckled. This pup didn't have nearly enough years under his belt to make a claim like that, especially not around a man whose father had raised Kinfa. The skies had called out to him as often as his father would allow the boy to tag along, and once his own kinfa had grown enough it turned into the only method of travel for Callum.

He wasn't surprised to see the raptrix; it was a popular enough mount for the northerner's, but it was still a sight to behold, never the less. Callum whistled thrice, in a specific pattern, and waited. A loud, crunching sound came from the rooftop and he heard a loud, piercing 'caw'. "Impressive. What about a game, then? Whoever can find the beast first will get the 'glory' of bringing it in? We'll both help one another capture it though; I'm sure it will be defensive in an unfamiliar territory."

A dark, avian shadow consumed the ground around Callum and grew in girth before a large, pink shape landed behind him in the snow. Faulina spread her large, black tipped wings with another shrieking caw before tucking them to her sides. She looked malicious; as if the pink itself were camouflage for her darker side. "This is Faulina. She's spoiled, but she's worth it."

Akiyal clucked his tongue thoughtfully, smoothing his fingers through the thick fur of Naeght's neck as he eyed his new adversary. "'Glory,' huh?" He hummed as a fully-grown kinfa crunched into the ground at Callum's size. It was a massive creature, and certainly looked fiercer than his own rather stern-looking raptrix. "'Glory' don't sound like much of anything I can show off to anyone else, but I guess it'll do."

His own mount dipped into a crouch, and Aki slung a leg over Naeght's shoulders to settle himself and tugged lightly on his fur to guide him closer to Cal's side. "I'll take you on. Just don't be mad when you lose, or anything. These snows are Naeght's home turf. Something as summer-bred as a kinfa? You don't stand no chance." With a smirk and a wave of farewell, Aki gave his raptrix an encouraging nudge, and the beast kicked off.

To be fair, though, he didn't really know what he was looking for... Something 'different,' though since he wasn't a Zenan native, that could be just about any of the wildlife.

But surely he would just know it when he saw it, if they made it that far. Even though snow, wind, and cold didn't bother Naeght, Akiyal was somewhat less accustomed to the blusteryness of it all, particularly once up in the air, where everything felt even colder and the wind whipped a little harder. Naeght may be a predator who could hunt in these lands, but Aki didn't even know where to begin guiding him or how he'd spot anything 'different' from so far up in the air. Even on a good day, anything three feet in front of him was incredibly blurry... His beast would have to sort it on his own.

Callum gave into a little snorting laugh as he swung his legs up onto Faulina's back. She made no move to make it any easier on him; with her back tilted upwards the man had to hold onto the saddle's pommel the entire time he situated himself. There were straps to hold his legs in, of course, but mounting solo and trying to do so was far too much hassle. Besides, he'd only added those onto the saddle because his husband worried so mu-

Ah, yes, better to not think about that.

Faulina snapped at Akiyal, and might have nipped in had Callum not tugged her reigns in time. "Summer bred or not, she's lived in Zena far longer than you or your pup." Callum squeezed the saddle between his thighs, gave Faulina a little nudge with his knees and within seconds they were airborne. The aerial ascent always dropped his stomach to the floor below, but once they were high enough for her to level out Callum was always reminded of why he loved to fly. Every bit of jewelry he owned fluttered and smacked against his exposed skin, reminding him exactly why his in-laws called him crazy for wearing sheer materials in the north.

"They said it was closer to the pond, scaring mammu."
He tried calling out over the wind.

A 'pup' was what he'd called Naeght. Aki squinted ahead into the wind, grinning in spite of the cold and his blurry surroundings. His raptrix was more feral than tamed, older than his father's twenty-year-old mount, though by how much was still undetermined, and had lived with them in Sauti only sparingly, when it pleased him to do so. There was no telling with any degree of certainty how long his beast had lived in Zena, but even if it was less than the time Callum's bird had spent here, there was no substituting the innate gifts nature blessed a raptrix with over a kinfa for the climate of its homeland.

Akiyal didn't hear Callum's call over the loud rush of air all around him, and certainly had no hope of seeing him as any more than a brightly colored smudge against an endless blue sky, but Naeght descended on his own accord some handful of moments later amidst a flat and unbroken expanse of ice.

As Aki gazed out over it, he couldn't help but wish he had some sort of skill of his own- any skill, with tracking or taming or capturing. His crystal gaze narrowed in that way it did when he was looking for something well beyond the scope of his vision, and he huffed. "Well I can't see nothing," he complained as he folded his arms over his chest. "So if there's something here, you're on your own," he informed his beast.

There was no way of telling if Faulina descended on her own accord, or simply because she saw the shifts in Akiyal's raptrix. She stayed silent for the most part; beating her vibrant wings against the harsh, northern wind. Callum could see the mammu from here, and while he could see the great, lumbering beasts moving beneath them he didn't see anything out of the ordinary-

Until a few gave a loud, trumpeted cry before running. They didn't move far from the water, but just enough to get away from whatever it was that spooked them. He nudged Faulina to dip further down, though not by much. At this height he still couldn't see exactly what the danger was. Surely if it was large enough to scare the mammu then he should have been able to see something?

And yet....he did. It just wasn't what he had expected.

A dark, moving....stick? Clinging to some warm, sunbaked stones. What the hell...?

Akiyal tipped his head back, far enough that he could see the pink of Faulina's feathers hovering in the air some space ahead of and above him- and not much else, save for the sky at her back. The wind boy refocused his attention on the task at hand. Mounds of ice, a crystal lake, some lumbering shapes not so far off in the distance... And then noise from what were apparently mammu ahead. Akiyal's excitement piqued instantly, and as if sensing some newfound purpose, Naeght galloped forward.

The silence of a disciplined predator wasn't to last, because as they neared what Aki now realized was a herd, his raptrix started barking. Not the high, sharp sounds sounds of communication to a comrade, but the low, rumbling and reverberating warning sounds meant to signal something unknown.

The beast's pace slowed, his head dipped, and the muted growling continued.

It took Akiyal what he strongly suspected was too many seconds beyond acceptable to realize that there was something besides mammu near. He'd known his vision was poor. It was something his father had kept him repeatedly informed of everytime he'd ask something like, 'Can't you see? It's just there!' or 'It's right in front of you, Akiyal. Open your eyes. Dummy.' But it never quite dawned on Aki to accept this as a truth. he couldn't quite conceive of what better vision might look like, and it was only when Naeght's nose was very nearly close to touching the foreign creature did Aki take note of it at all.

And then, "What's that s'posed to be," he demanded, squinting hard at the thin, serpentine-like body and feeling something very similar to frustration about coming out here for a tiny little reptile. 'Scaring mammu,' indeed.

He shot a glower up toward the figure of Callum's bird. "This little thing ain't really what you're lookin' for, is it?" Because if all Cal wanted was a wiggly little tube of flesh, he really needn't have traveled so far...
