Water Deliveries & The Gruff Guard
After Nkole had run off, back to his camp and back to seeking out hsi missing sister, the rest of Makani's of the walk back from the river was pretty uneventful. It was mostly filled with Makani focusing half his attention on making sure his water barrels didn't tip over and the other half of his attention on making sure he didn't trip over anything. The cargo in the barrels was far too important for him to risk losing, not when it was such a precious thing to have. Going about cleansing water took time, as well as a lot of magical energy, and it was something that not just anyone had the time for given all the patients that were in need of the attention of the various magic users that were staying in Neued. As he walked along he thought about where he should be heading first. The first of barrels would need to go to the healers, the water would be meted out for various uses. Some would be used to clean wounds, some to the patients to drink, and then anything else clean water would be needed for. The second barrel would go to the supply tents so that it people could fill their water skins and drink it.
With as many people as there were in Neued, various injured and refugees from the battle against Oba, water like this was in high demand. It was why Makani wasn't too surprised when someone was suddenly coming over to him. He instantly assumed that it was someone after some water, something that he wouldn't mind sharing with them of course, provided that they didn't touch the water themselves. He had to be careful with, keep it clean and uncontaminated, but when the man spoke up he realized it wasn't what he'd thought it to be. The man wasn't after his water, he was here to chat with him? Oh well, maybe he could put the man to work, "Ah, what? Oh! Yes, I don't mind a chat, though can you do so while helping move these barrels? Any help would be rather useful, these things are kind of heavy and I still need to bring them a good distance yet. The hospital area for one of them and the supply area for the other." He explained to the man that had come to stand before him.
The man gave him a long look, arms crossing over his chest, watching him closely as Makani asked him for his help, before he in turn asked of the blond, "What were you doing a moment ago?" It was a question asked in a tone that said that the guard was most certainly on duty, not letting Makani just come and go as he pleased, not with everything that was going on around here, and not given what he'd seen the blond up to.
Makani tilted his head to one side, "What was I doing? Well, first I brought these barrels down to the river, gather up water. I used my magic to purify it, making it safe for everyone, we already had enough trouble at the moments without dealing with some sort of water born illness." He explained to the man, "After that I helped a guy who got himself all tangled up in some roots. Seems that he is camped somewhere nearby looking for his sister but I can't say I know where she is... oh! I don't think I asked what her name was, did I?" He shook his head, feeling a bit bad about that. If he knew what her name was he could at least keep an ear out for it, let her know her brother was looking for her if Makani came across the girl. Well, if he ran into him again he would be sure to ask he thought to himself with a bit of a smile.
"That was it? No discussion of anything of importance? Telling him what is going on in the village or the like?" He asked, his tone getting a little more demanding. It was a tone that confused Makani a little as he felt that the man was trying to put him on trial for something.
Sighing he said, "I can't say that I did, I mentioned the fires that happened earlier and told him that he should be careful. I mean camping out when there could be Obans about, surely he knows that isn't safe, right?" He didn't much care for the idea himself, "I would rather he come back with him, he'd be better off in the village, he could always start here after all. What if his sister is in the village after all? Though... I suppose that he could have already searched here and come up empty handed? I can't really say thought."
The man was starring at him now, a stare that said he didn't quite buy everything that Makani was saying, one that was hard enough that Makani could feel it, before he asked, "And the man you were chatting with, what did he look like to you?" The fact that he had warned the man of the impending Oban attacks despite what the man looked like. Was this guy so stupid that he didn't understand what an Oban looked like? Reaching forward he grabbed hold of Makani's scarf, dragging him a bit closer, "Do I look like an idiot to you? Do you really think that I buy it that you just happened to warn someone like that about the Obans? I think you're lying, I think that you were..." He trailed off when his own silvery colored eyes met the yellow eyes of the boy in front of him, and saw no light in them. The guard's mind set to whirling before his cheeks started to burn a hot red, "W-Wait... don't tell me that you're...?"
Makani lifted a hand to rest it against the one that had such a tight death grip on his scarf, not wanting the man to risk damaging the precious item, before he saying in a sighing tone, "Blind? Yes, meaning I can't tell you what the man looked like or if you look like an idiot, though I can hazard a guess about the latter." He knew that his magic was helpful, it let him get around in a manner that was almost normal, though with a few hiccups here and there, but really the fact that so few people noticed his condition was a bit surprising to him at times. Normally it would be amusing to him as well but given how rude the guy was being and how much he seemed to be wanting to manhandle Makani it had lost that amusing edge. If anything Makani just wanted to drag some earthen material out of the ground, wrap it around the man's legs, and be on his way but he knew better. The man was a guard of the Neued village and the last thing that he wanted was to get accused of attacking someone with that authority. Instead he'd just casually call him an idiot and leave it at that.
"So... is this interrogation over? I need to get this water to where it's going so that I can hopefully man another trip or two down to the river before it becomes too late or I become to tired. Cleansing water of impurities can be rather draining, magically speaking." He wondered how long it was going to take for the man to find his voice again. He was making these sort of choked sounds in his throat as though he'd swallowed a spitorog whole. Makani would give him a moment more though before he tried to leave, the man still had hold of his scarf after all and it wasn't something that he wanted damaged. It was the only thing that he had left of his first friend, someone he feared he'd never see again, and he wouldn't let some idiot guard ruin it! If he tried Makani would say to hell with it and actually blast the man with some magic no matter what the consequences might be. Luckily for everyone involved it turned out that he wouldn't have to do something as drastic as all of that.
After what felt like an eternity the man's hand eased its hold on Makani's scarf and he released him, saying, "Look kid, I... I will see about finding you a couple guys to escort you to the river and carry the barrels back for you. It's safest for you, for the water everyone needs, and for Neued in general. I get that you are trying to help everyone, apparently even your 'friend' who'd gotten himself tangled up included, but you're a liability as well. We can't have you bumbling about, making friends with every would be spy in the area! So you're going to go about bringing those barrels to where they belong and when you return here I will have your escort waiting." He said, turning on his heel, and went stalking off while muttering, leaving Makani that much more confused then he had been since any of this began.
Once the man was out of ear shot Makani said in a huffing tone, "You were supposed to help move the barrels!" Crossing his arms over his chest for a moment he tried to look stern and upset about it before giving a shrug, "Ah well." Not much he could do he supposed before he continued on his way, mulling over the man's words. What did he mean Makani was a 'liability'? Not to mention what did he mean about 'making friends with would be spies'? The man really was a strange one, he made no sense and he offered no explanation either, but at least he'd gone on his way and was leaving Makani alone. The blond would like to stay mad at the man but he really couldn't, sure the man wasn't helping at present but at least the escort that he'd offered to find would aid him in the next runs that he made to and from the river. Putting up with the weirdo and his ravings turned out to be useful if nothing else, even if his attitude had grated on the blond mage a bit.
It really didn't take all that long for Makani to put his annoyance behind him so that he could return to the more important task at hand that was delivering the water into the right hands. Taking a day off from his normal duties as a healer meant that he had to make sure his time wasn't wasted. He couldn't waste the day just laying around, even if a nap sounded fantastic. No, he would make sure to do something equally as important, even if the day off that he'd been given wasn't a day off at all. How could he take a day off when everyone else was working so hard after all? He knew that he was young and all but that didn't mean he needed to take a day off to play or anything. Once the war was over, once all of his patients were safe, then he would see about taking a day off.
Of course even if the war ended tomorrow he supposed he wouldn't be able to just laze around then either, could he? He still wanted to help Sin'qua with honing her magical talents, there was the troupe to think about, and various other things that he wanted to do. Really, when he thought about it he couldn't say that he wanted a day off. If he were to sit about idly he'd feel as though he was wasting his time and that of everyone around him. Instead he would much rather just continue to help out. With that thought in mind he came to stop in front of the area where the healers were set up, sliding one of the barrels forward so that it would stand beside the near empty one that they already had. He was right to come here first he thought to himself, nodding to one of his fellow healers that he could sense nearby, before he was on his way once more.
The walk from the healer's tent to the supply tent was a happily uneventful one, with Makani just having to stop a couple of times to fill a couple of water flasks for people that stopped him, and soon the second barrel was being dropped off as well. With both of the barrels no longer under his watch he was able to burn a lot less magical energy which took a lot of strain off of him. Stretching out all over the man realized that it was going to be so nice to have his escort. He was going to put them to work for certain, have them move the barrels about so that he wouldn't have to, that way all he had to do was concentrate on the purifying of the water. It would save him so much time and magical energy, meaning that he would be able to get that much more water prepared before night fall! It was something that would likely exhaust his escort but that was what they were there for, to help him out!
Whistling to himself Makani headed back toward where the gruff guard from earlier told Makani to meet him. Much to his delight he was soon introduced to a pair of strapping young guards who were more then happy to help. Giving a smile Makani said, "Alright, the first thing we are going to do then is fetch some barrels that we are going to fill with water, as many as you two think you can move between now and night fall, the more water we get the happier the people will be." He told them, clapping his heads together with delight before he led the way to where the empty barrels were kept. This was going to be great!

Aftermath
The war was over. At least that was what Makani was hearing, that people were working on writing up negotiations with those from Oban, and that the hostilities and the fighting would cease. Better words he'd never heard before as he realized that meant that there would be no new patients appearing before him that were in need of his help. No more terrible wounds, no more of the scent of blood, and no more sensing with his magic as someone passed away. He would be able to finish up here, with the patients that he still had, and he wouldn't find waves more of them coming in. It was a huge relief, knowing that after this the only wounds that he would have to deal with her simple things, like that time that he'd had to deal with Gyuri and Borra after the Borra had accidentally given the big guy a headbutt. It would be, nice. Once he was done with the patients that he had he knew what he wanted to do first, he wanted to get a nice, long nap.
At least if he was lucky enough to get one, knowing Eira she would probably want to head out the moment that things were declared safe enough to do so. He would need to be prepared for that he supposed, knowing that at any moment his sister could come into the tent demanding that they leave. Tilting his head he listened in on those around him for a moment before his attention went back to the patient that he was working with. There was still a lot to do, wounds that needed to be treated, people that needed taken care of, he couldn't just leave them like this. As he worked, using his magic to stitch up what he'd guess was a sword wound from how it felt to him, he wondered if Biroki were around helping to heal the injured as well. It was a while ago but he'd enjoyed working with him, he was good at what he did. It made sense though since he was older then Makani was, with more power and a higher rank, so of course he'd be good at his job. What about Sin'qua? Was she around too? Maybe, but then again if she was present he was sure that she would end up coming over to where he was eventually.
If she wasn't here though she might have already been waylaid by Eira, meaning the two might be discussing where they were going next. Eira seemed to differ to Sin'qua on some matters even if she was stubborn when it came to other ones. Truth be told he was kind of curious where they would be going himself. All he knew for certain was it wouldn't be Jauhar, Eira couldn't stand the place due to the muggy weather. So maybe somewhere else in Tale? Perhaps they would head back to Sauti or Zena, either place might be nice to visit, but he couldn't really say for certain. Even after all the years that he had known his older sister he still couldn't really tell how her mind worked. She had been changing too over the years, the biggest change being Sin'qua, the fact that his sister had a female friend now was something he'd never thought he'd see... so to speak.
"Alright, the bleeding has stopped and your wound is stitched back together. I would still suggest that you don't strain it though, alright? Magical healing is something quite miraculous but it's not the end all, be all. If you stress the wound it could very well tear and you will be right back in here. So try to take some time to rest now that you can." He told the man was working with, giving him a smile as he got up and headed out. He hoped that the guy took his advice instead of going out to celebrate too hard. He'd rather not have to fix him up again just because he drank too much and fell over.
Another patient soon replaced the one that he had been working on, and he couldn't say he was surprised. Sure, the war itself might be over but the after math of it was far from done. Giving the man a nod Makani lifted his hands, moving them from side to side, getting a feel for the wounds that he had, a bit more serious then the last patient. He had a couple of breaks, something that would be better dealt with by putting the limbs in a cast, but he could take care of the still bleeding wounds that he had, "I will take care of your most immediate needs, stop your bleeding, but then you will move to another healer who will see about making a cast for your arm and your leg. You have a break in each and it's something that will take time to heal." Putting on a cast was something he still needed to learn to do. It wasn't something that was easy for one without sight to do but he felt with a lot of practice that he might he able to do it through touch or through magical means. It would be something to think about trying to learn when he had some down time.
His task for the patient in front of him was simple enough, a quick healing session and then the man was being moved to those who would look over the arm and leg and then see to it that he was given a couple casts. His wounds were bound of be painful for some time to time as he waited for the bones to come back together but he would make it. The same couldn't be said for a patient that was nearby. He could hear the people that were milling about him, trying to stop the bleeding, to keep him alive, but his energy was so weak. It came as no surprise to Makani when someone called it moments later. It was something that had him sighing a little to himself. If it wasn't for the fact that he used his magic to sense what was around him, who was around him, and what condition his patients were in he might very well wrap his magic more tightly around himself. There were things a person just didn't want to sense, which was another thing that he looked forward to when he was able to return to just working Eira's troupe.
He'd keep the troupe, as well as the rather easy work it came with, in mind as he continued to work on patient after patient. There were those who would live, those that would take time to recover, and those that would pass. It was something that was difficult to deal with but it was the natural order of things. The more patients that he tended to the closer he got to being done and the closer he got to that nap he wanted so badly. Resting up physically, mentally, and magically would be nice and allow him to prepared for whatever the troupe was doing next. He just hoped that it was a lot more mundane, or at least as mundane as troupe work could be, not wanting to be a combat medic ever again if he could help it.

Regaining Control
It was a little odd, to have lost complete and total control of his magic in the manner that he had... and he was a very lucky man that it was Sin'qua and not Eira that had found him after his power had escaped from him. He'd been so afraid in that moment, unable to grasp his magic, unable to 'see' in the manner that he was so used to seeing, and he'd just been struck down. There was a moment where it felt as though everything had been lost, everything had been broken, and then there was Sin'qua to help him out. If she hadn't been there to help him calm down he wasn't sure what would have happened or where he would have ended up. In those moments of blindness he'd felt so awful, as though the only thing that he'd wanted to was to curl up into a ball and just sob. She'd been there for him, had saved him from that, and helped him to get his magic back under control.
Stepping forward, moving away from where the others were, he lifted his hands up to gather magic to swirl above them. Now, a day after his magic had gotten away from him, he seemed to have his control back and he knew that it was because of Sin'qua. The question then became how it was supposed to thank her for such a thing. There wasn't a present in the world that would really equal what she'd done for him. Heck, not only had she saved him and helped him to get everything back into order but she'd also helped him to clean up the mess that he'd made. It was something that was extra kind, especially for Sin'qua who could be quite terse and lacking in tack most times. What she'd done for him though showed him that she did have a kind heart, it was just something that she hid from people, Eira especially. A good thing though since she needed to be strong enough to argue with Eira.
Allowing the magic in his hands to be released in a little flurry of wind he gave a smile, "Excellent." It was all working the right way, so he couldn't say that he was too worried about that now. What he did worry about was that he always ran the risk of allowing such a thing to happen a second time. He would need to practice his magic more though, to make sure that he had better control even though he always had a bit of power flowing around him at all times. It was that flow of magic that allowed him to 'see' after all. The only time that such power wasn't swirling around his form was when he was asleep. During those times Makani was at his most vulnerable because he was completely blind then... but the moment that he woke up the flow of power started anew. It was for that reason that he was so scared when he had zero control of his power, which wasn't something he wanted to allow to happen again.
"I need to find a way to thank Sin'qua." He murmured to himself, starting forward, gathering more power to himself, this time sending out a simple water spell, followed by a wind spell, and finally a spell that caused the earth to shift a bit in front of him. He still had access to all of his spells, which was nice to see. So he was able to do all of the things that he did before, he just did so knowing that he had lost control before... and worse, he knew full well why he'd lost control. He done so because he'd lost something else even more important, that being Lusala.
Giving a gentle sigh his hands went to where his scarf was located, tied firmly around his waist. It was too warm in Sauti to wear it in the intended manner but using it as a sash allowed him to keep it with him at all times. He was protecting it even more fiercely then usual, with it being the last physical tie that he had to his friend. How he wished that he'd know Lusala was in trouble, how he wished that he'd been able to use his magic to save the man. He knew that he could wish all day for such a thing and it wasn't going to come true though. Lusala was gone and it was something that he would need to come to terms with, something that he would eventually overcome, though it was going to take time to get to that point. Sin'qua told him as much. It hurt now, but he had other people that loved and cherished him, it was those words that were going to help him through the process that was grieving for his lost friend. He needed to keep striving forward and one day he would be able to look back on Lusala and thing only of the good things, all without his heart feeling as though it was going to break in the process.
Shaking his head rapidly he forced himself to focus again on his magic, having felt it waver a bit around him. He wouldn't allow it to go crazy on him again. He'd been lucky last time, it had been his things and his things alone that had gotten messed up. He could have hurt someone and that wasn't something that he could allow to happen again. He had to get his magic back under control, make sure that it was once more flowing around him like a gentle stream instead of a raging river. To do so he would need to work with it, make sure that he was able to return to doing all of the same things that he'd done before the new of Lusala. Not only would he make sure that he could do all those things again but he'd make sure that he did them without incident. Surely his friend wouldn't want him to break down after all.
"I'm going to miss you." He murmured before starting forward once more, calling forth more magical spells, as his training continued.

News of War
A new day, a new battle he thought to himself as he listened to what those around him were saying. It seemed that when a battle was struck up between what people were calling the 'zealots' of the Alkidike tribe. Some people were on their way to join the battle, some were bedding down in the inn because it was a fairly peaceful place, while others were going the opposite direction of the rest. The inn was a good middle ground where everyone was welcome therefore in times of war it was obvious that it was going to be a popular place for all of those reasons and more. It was why Eira wanted to set up an inn in the first place, to have at least one place in the world where things could be peaceful no matter what else was going on. It was a dream that he could believe in, he knew what it was like after all, losing someone that he cared about to war. Here in this place at least such things were always kept at a distance.
Personally Makani had no interest in the war. He had been through his fair share of battles, mostly tending to others, healing as many as he could, but it was something he couldn't do again. It was something he knew sounded selfish but after that last war, the one against the Obans, he'd ended up a broken husk of a man. He had been elbow deep in blood for far too long, dealt with the wounded far too long, and lost far too many patients. He didn't think that it was something that he'd be able to do again... though if people were to come to him, seeking aid, that he could do. He just couldn't take another war. It was a frightening thing then that the battle was threatening to be as close to them as it was. The fact that the zealots were coming to Sauti, it made his heart hurt just thinking about it.
Lifting a hand he rubbed it against his face, drawing in a deep breath, before he let it out slowly. He couldn't let himself spiral. He wasn't going to be forced to fight after all and only if injured people came to the inn would he have to heal them. He wasn't about to beg Chi not to have that happen of course, he wasn't a monster, but he wasn't going to seek out the medical tent again if he could help it. It was the sort of line that he didn't really want to be walking because it knew that it made him feel bad. He didn't want to seem as though he was holding back when it came to his healing abilities but he also didn't want to run off to try to save everyone again when he knew how such an endeavor would end.
As he heard more chatter from his left side this time, this time it was about the firebirds of Sauti, and that apparently one of the lead zealots was after them. Now that wasn't something he liked the sound of. Did that mean that someone was hunting the firebirds? Didn't they know that such creatures were rare and beautiful? That hunting them was a horrible thing to do? Not to mention that if anyone were to hurt them that they might get banned from the inn since his sister seemed to be so fond of them. Any time there was even a whisper that they might be around she hurried outside to look up at the sky, hoping to get a glimpse of the birds. He didn't exactly understand it himself, not able to see them from a distance after all, but if he were to get close enough he might be able to sense their energy. At least then he might understand them, which would make the birds far more interesting to him. He would never hunt the creatures but if he could 'meet' one of them, that could be interesting.
His attention was captured again, this time in front of the table that he was sitting at. Two men talking about how the forces were going to gather at the border. There were some who were determined to make sure the zealots didn't even enter Sauti. A claim that actually put him at ease, glad to hear that the warriors would be making their stand at the border. That meant that they would be keeping the danger far from the inn. The last thing he wanted was for the troupe or any of their guests to be put in the line of fire. All he had to figure out where exactly they were setting up, it would make him feel better knowing exactly how far they were to the inn, because that would tell him the odds of someone coming from the battlefield looking for healing.
Pushing to his feet the blond sage stretched out all over before he allowed his magic to flow around his feet, giving him a feel for the lay out around him, as well as where everyone was standing. Once he knew where everything was located he gave a smile, turned, and moved toward where the bar was located. He knew that it was almost his turn to entertain people, meaning that he would be using a lot of magical energy. He only did it from time to time since he didn't want to waste all of his magical energy being the 'amazing blind mage' that entertained others. He'd rather stick with jobs that didn't have him at the center of attention, but such a show fro time to time was alright. If it entertained the masses, especially given the closeness of the war, then he was alright with it.
Leaning against the bar he asked for a glass of water from his sister who was working the bar tonight. Once he had it in hand he turned around, leaning with his back against the bar, and was listened to the sounds of the voice against him as he drank from his mug. He would be sure to take in as much conversation as he could before it was time for him to put on a show. The more he knew the better, it allowed him to be better prepared for the future after all.
