To Be a Hero

Lixes was in a grand mood! He'd been able to actually save someone! First from a spider, then a group of bullies, and then finally from the tree that she'd gotten herself stuck in. It was a grand thing, one that had him flying high at the moment. He wanted to dance around in place... and in fact he did. He bounced a bit, did a bit of a spin, then started forward once more. He just couldn't wait to get back home. He was going to tell everyone about his heroic actions, the most important part being that he'd saved a damsel in distress! It meant that he was doing exactly what he wanted to do, that being to become a hero when he was older!

One heroic act wouldn't make him a hero, not straight away, but it was like taking the first step in the right direction! That meant that he was going to have to do many, many more heroic deeds but still, it was the first step! Who did he want to tell first? A part of him said 'whoever he saw first' but in all honesty it was probably his Alkidike father that he wanted to tell first because it might actually get him to give Lixes one of his old hammers! The idea of finally getting his hands on a hammer, one that he'd been trying to sneak off with every since he was a youngling, was quite exciting to him. So yes, his father first, then Drexl since his older brother had always known about his dream of being hero. Letting him know that he'd actually had a chance to be a hero was something that had him giving a gleeful sound.

"Oh man! I just can't wait!" He said, bouncing along as he went toward home. It was so, so, so very amazing! Turning to look toward Pyre, who was trotting along at his side, he said, "I was great today, huh? I'm glad that at least you were there to see me be a hero!" He reached out a hand, scratching the brightly colored radaku under his chin, giving him a smile. Sure, it wasn't one of his family members per say, but at least someone was there to witness it, right? He knew that the radaku wouldn't be able to sing his praises to the heavens but at least Lixes would know, right? He started forward again, a visible spring in his steps. Here was to hoping that when he got back that those he wanted to talk with first were present so that he could tell them all about it in detail!

As though to tease Lixes a bit upon his arriving home there was... nobody. His parents might have gone out on a walk, his oldest brother might be napping with his mammu, and Drexl... well, if he had to take a guess at it he was probably with Jerami. His brother seemed to have found a 'princess' of his own, which was nice, and at some point he needed to find one of his own. Well, maybe... as a hero he might not want to shackle himself down to one princess, instead maybe he aught to use his power as a hero to save all the damsels? He could be their knight but not their prince, which mean that he'd be able to save them but he wouldn't marry them, right? It was a tempting thought since that meant that he could be able to continue as a hero forever without having to retire as a hero to instead live as a prince. He wanted to wait and do that when he was older, much older.

Once he was older, maybe his parents age, then he might just consider settling down. Until then though he was actually happy with the idea of wandering around with his 'adventure group' getting to do heroic deeds, slay dangerous monsters, and save all of the damsels that he could. Maybe, after all of that, if he were lucky, he'd get a kiss for his troubles from the damsels before he headed off toward his next adventure! It was a dream worth looking into. He just found himself wondering if Drexl was going to want to stay with him since he wouldn't likely want to leave Jerami behind. The idea of being without his big brothers was the one thing that scared Lixes the most after all. He'd already lost his two oldest brothers after all, he didn't want to lose the others as well. At the same time he couldn't exactly be selfish and drag Drexl along with him if he'd found something in Jauhar that he wanted to fight for, right?

A thought that put the slightest damper on his delight over his earlier heroics. Walking into the currently empty house owned by his family he looked around a moment before he went to sit down on the floor, leaning against the wall, watching the door so that he would see the others the moment that they got home. It wouldn't take long, surely? At least he hoped now. As much as Lixes hated to admit it the idea of being alone wasn't one that sat well with him. He knew that heroes weren't supposed to have weaknesses, especially such obvious ones, but he knew that weakness was presently within him. He was afraid to be alone. As such, if Drexl did decide to stay behind with Jerami, he was going to have to find others to join his 'adventure group'. Especially if Arron wasn't able to come along.

Lifting a hand he scratched it against his chin before giving a sigh. The road of a hero was tough, huh? Something that he'd known for a while, but he couldn't let it hold him back. The biggest killer of heroes was fear after all and he couldn't let that take him not now, not when he'd just gotten his first taste of being a real hero. He would stand tall no matter what and he'd be ready for anything that came his way! Before he was off battling giant beasts and saving all the damsels though he'd focus his energy on the present. He would overcome the suddenly lonely feelings that were flooding him and he would survive until one or more of his family members got home so he could tell them all about his day.

Turning his mind away from the bad and to the good he decided to do his best to focus on that, as well as the girl he'd help instead of the deafening silence around him. It was strange how quiet the house could actually be when nobody was home, which made him look forward to their return all that much more. Giving a bit of a sigh he pushed to his feet and trotted over to the door of the house and sat down cross legged there, starring out the door for any signs of his family members. Once someone got back he would be able to chat it up with them he thought to himself, one ear giving a little twitch as he looked from side to side.

He kind of hoped that it was Drexl that came back first because then he could not only tell his brother about what happened but he could drag him along to train with him. Drexl was big and strong even if he didn't act like it, meaning that he would be the best one to train with! He'd also make a good hero himself once they were older. He'd be an awesome, though far more modest, hero and the two of them could work together to save everyone! Though Drexl didn't really need to save damsels since he already had one, but still. It would be fun!

A Little Misstep

Lixes was currently hanging upside down from a tree branch, starring at a flyer that he'd found while he was wandering around the village today. It was one that spoke of a tournament that was to be held in Oba. It was something that had him starring at it for a long moment before he ended it up sort of dismissing it in his mind. He knew without even asking his parents that he would never be allowed to go to something like this. He knew what his dad's thoughts on the Obans were, knew that the an didn't like them, didn't trust them, and because of that he knew that there was no way that they would be allowed to go to the tournament. To be honest he didn't really think that he was ready for such a thing anyway, not while he was still without a hammer. He really needed to talk his parents into it, getting them to understand that he was old enough to have a weapon of his own, that he was ready to train with it, and ready to take on the mantle of a hero! He'd proved that he was ready for it... well, the hero part at least.

Sitting up on the branch he folded up the flyer, tucking it into his pocket. Since he knew that he wasn't going to be allowed to go to the tournament there really wasn't any reason for him to worry over it, was there? It was a shame but it really wasn't something that he'd held any illusions about when it came to actually going to Oba. Was it held anywhere else then maybe they would have gone as a family but given that wasn't the case he wouldn't really fret over it. Here was to hoping the next time a tournament was held that he was older, armed, and that it wasn't located in a place where his parents wouldn't allow... so any where but Oba, Zena, and likely the poisoned island. Any other place and they might actually be able to go!

Giving a bit of a grin he started across his perched, hopping from branch to branch before he started toward home. As he went, wandering along the branches in a manner that showed he wasn't bee lining it for home, he found himself wondering if he would have a better chance at getting a hammer of his own if he were able to get Drexl to come with him. What if they asked at the same time? He could ask for his hammer and Drexl could ask for his weapon of choice that he'd wield once he became a rider. Surely if the both of them appealed to their parents at the same time then it would be more likely that they would listen the request, right? It was a plan that sounded pretty good to him, though he'd have to run it by his big brother once he caught up with him. It just felt like that would be the way to go since appealing to their parents one at a time made it a lot easier for them to say no.

Pausing in place he turned to looked down at he saw someone rushing passed with what looked to be a rather good sized maglardilla chasing along after them. It was a sight that had his eyes going wide, realizing that he'd seen this sort of thing before. Wasn't this the exact same situation in which they had met Jerami so many years ago? He too had been chased by a dangerous maglardilla and would have been eaten if the 'adventure group' hadn't stepped in saved him. Sure, at the time, the group consisted of himself and Drexl, but still, it was an effective group because they'd been able to rescue someone. This time though it seemed as though he was going to have to do this on his own. A shame as he enjoyed Drexl's aid when it came to his heroism but one couldn't call themselves a hero if they backed down from all challenges that was laid out before them. He had to do this on his own, he had to save that person from the insect that chased him!

Without a second thought on the matter Lixes went rushing forward as quickly as he could along the branches. As he ran his mismatched eyes scanned the area below him, seeking out the one that he was trying to rescue. It was weird, wasn't it? How mean the maglardilla were. They were so pretty with their bright colors and interesting patterns but were always chasing people! They needed to learn to behave. It took a moment to find them but once he did he put on a boost of speed, jumping down the branches, and landed easily between the Shifter and the maglardilla. Once there he turned to face the creature, lifting his fists, and declared, "Alright, bug! You won't be eating this poor Shifter today!" A declaration that caused the bug to slide to a halt. It stood there before Lixes, starring at him for a long moment before it started to chitter at him in a rather annoyed manner. The creature took a step forward, which had Lixes instantly preparing himself the battle ahead. He would take care of the maglardilla thus proving to everyone that he was a hero! He'd save this Shifter just as he'd saved the youngling girl not all that long ago! Soon he'd be the best up incoming hero in all of Andile!

Before Lixes could take a step forward toward his insect foe to commence the great battle against it he was suddenly being thumped on the head by the fist of the Shifter behind him, something that caused Lixes to whirl around, "Hey! What are you doing? I'm trying to save you!" He sounded quite surprised and hurt that the damsel, or whatever the male version of a damsel, had hit him for his efforts! Why would he do that? Didn't he know that he was just supposed to stand there and wait to be rescued? Lixes was playing the part of the hero and the Shifter was playing the part of the damsel, meaning it was the damsel's job to stand back and wait for Lixes to finish everything! Geez!

The young man glared at Lixes, lifting his hands up into a stance looking as though he were ready to get into a fist fight with the Lixes before he snapped, "Talis would never eat me you braid dead idiot! She's my familiar! How dare you just assume that she's trying to make a snack out of me! You don't even know her!" The look on the Shifter's face wasn't a very pleased one, was it? Instead it was one that said that he was ready to punch Lixes again at any moment if it meant keeping the blond from picking on the maglardilla anymore then he already had in the short time since Lixes jumped between the Shifter and his pet. Something that left Lixes for a moment lost for words.

Still wearing a startled look on his face Lixes turned so he could give the beast a long glance before looking back at the young man once more. Wait, wait... so people could have maglardilla as pets? Here he'd only thought that they were pests or ingredients for different sorts of stews and stir frys. He'd never met a pet worthy one... but then again the only one that he'd ever run across that wasn't already cooked up was the one that had tried to eat Jerami. As such his opinion on them was a bit weighted toward one side, wasn't it? He hadn't even considered for a moment that it might be anything more then a monster on the prowl. Giving a bit of a sigh he said, "I... am... sorry. I didn't know... it kinda looked as though it were chasing you so... I just thought... you know, you needed rescued!"

The words seemed to rile the Shifter up a bit more, "I don't need rescued by some wanna be hero! I'm fine on my own so just screw off, weirdo! Come on, Talis, let's get going before his stupid rubs off on us." The creature gave another chittering sound before the pair were rushing off one more, with the Shifter leading and the bug following along behind at his heels. They were soon out of sight given the cluster of trees they were in making it easy to vanish, leaving Lixes all alone.

The blond stood there, thrown a bit off kilter by the Shifter's words. Damn it, he was neither a 'wanna be hero' or a 'weirdo' thank you very much! He was a hero in training... which meant that he was bound to make mistakes from time to time. This was just a learning experience! One that told him that he had to think a little harder when it came to such situations. He would need to learn to better assess things and read his perceived enemies to make sure that they were just that, enemies. This time around he had been in the wrong but the Shifter really didn't have to be so prickly about it! Jeez... he could have at least been happy that Lixes was willing to protect him instead of getting so mad!

Giving a little huffing sound he whirled around on his heel, heading toward home again. He wouldn't let this one stumble stop him! He would continue forward toward his goal of being a hero no matter what. All heroes were sure to make mistakes from time to time. He just wouldn't tell his family about this mistake since he was likely to never live it down. Not to mention that there was a chance that his trying to save someone from their own pet might keep his parents from letting him have a hammer. Best that he kept it to himself and just did his best to learn from the rather awkward situation instead.

It might be best for him to learn about what sorts of beasts within Jauhar actually made good familiars to start. If he knew that then he knew which ones might actually be familiars, not predators, when it came to saving others. The tough part when it came to that though was the fact that sometimes people had familiars from outside of Jauhar. Jerami was a good example since his kinfa came from Tale and Lixes's brother had a mammu which came from Zena. That meant, what? That he would need to familiarize himself with familiars from every area of Tendaji? That sounded like a rather intimidating task to under take but if it kept him from being embarrassed like that again maybe it was a good idea?

This was one time that he was actually glad that he didn't have his hammer yet. What would have happened if he'd of smashed the maglardilla instead of just diving between the Shifter and beast? He would likely have then gotten himself beaten to a pulp in turn by that rather aggressive Shifter. Lixes supposed that he was in the wrong for trying to save the young man from his pet but he didn't have to be such a jerk about it. Didn't he know that Lixes was doing his best? Apparently his best meant nothing at the moment he thought to himself, giving a little snort.

There was a part of Lixes that wanted to be mad at the guy, though it was hard to do. Hard to be mad when he was in the wrong... but so was the Shifter. He could have at least explained the situation without being so mean about it! Giving shake of his head he quickened his pace. He wanted to get home quickly, to find Drexl, so that he could talk to him. He was the one he felt that he should share the situation with without getting picked on. Maybe he would be able to tell him why the prickly Shifter was being such a jerk? Or maybe the guy was just in a mood?

Drexl was smart, he should be able to help him out. It would have to be talked about in secret though. He didn't want his parents to learn that he was making a fool of himself. He wanted a weapon in his hands sooner then later and he was sure this mess would make him look too childish for his hammer. Best that he only sought advice from Drexl he thought himself, smiling as the house came into view, and moved to hurry inside to seek out his brother.

Growth Solo: To Be a Hero

(( On patrol looking for heroic things to do Lixes finds himself faced with a rather heated situation between several Shifters and an Oban, all around his age. He does his best to help out the underdog though he ends up bit on the bruised up side. In the end, when things are looking up for the sides he was helping he decides that discretion is the better part of valor and retreats before he ends up beaten to a pulp. ))

Lixes was doing what he found to be a lot of fun, that being hanging upside down from a tree branches watching others as they went about their business. He felt that, as a hero in the making, he should be keeping an eye out of anyone that might need his aid. It was a slow day though... the best that he'd been able to do as far as his 'hero work' was to save a youngling from a spitorog that had somehow cornered her. The weird thing had puffed up in a huge ball when he poked at it, remaining as such as he carried it off. After depositing it in the forest he returned to get a flower from the little youngling who then ran off to play with some others around her age. It had been fun but he didn't exactly see saving someone from a frog as being on the same level as true heroics... or was it? He supposed it depended on what the victims thought, huh? He'd saved her from the frog that was tormenting her after all so he was a hero to the youngling, right? Still, it definitely was no battle again a beast of legend of anything, but it was still something.

After he started to swing a bit, a measure to alleviate boredom, he turned to look toward teh side a he heard some voices calling out. He couldn't really make out what they were saying but it seemed as though it was getting louder and louder, drawing his attention. Shifting so that he was sitting up right on his perch he watched as a group came running into sight and his eyes went a bit wide. It looked as though it were a group of Shifters, around his age, three boys and a girl, chasing after a single boy, around the same age, who was... Oban? Lixes leaned forward, nearly falling off of his perch, in an attempt to watch. He was for a moment struck with awe, having never seen an Oban before. His Earthling father, Rilind, hated them... he didn't want his children, his husband, or himself, anywhere near them. As such he felt as though this were a rare chance to see something that he wasn't supposed to see and he was amazed!

A thought that was struck from his thoughts as he heard the Shifter girl yelling at the rest of Shifters to 'just knock it off' but her words were ignored as one of them grabbed hold of the Oban, dragging him backwards, spun him around, and delivered a rather powerful punch to the Oban boy's face. It caused Lixes to go wide eyed, his mouth dropping open, "What in the name of Aisha?" He murmured, starting to scramble down the branches of the tree toward where the others were. Two of the Shifters didn't seem to be in on the fight per say but they definitely weren't helping, they kept catching hold of the Oban to shove him back into the fray after each punch while the girl did her best to try to get them to stop. It was like nothing Lixes had ever seen before.

Making his way closer Lixes was finally able to hear what was being said. The girl wanted them to 'leave him alone', the aggressive male was raging about the 'Oban scum staying away from his twin sister', while the other two weren't saying much other then telling the girl to 'stay out of it' and that she should have chosen a 'worthy boyfriend'. It was something that shocked him a bit because of the implications, they were going after the guy because he was dating his sister? Was it just because he was Oban? He knew that there were a lot of people that didn't like them, his father included, but surely this young man hadn't even been born during the time of war, right? He knew that he was born after all of that himself and they had to be the same age. They were picking on him for no reason! Lixes knew full well that if his father found out what he was doing that the man wouldn't be all that happy with him but he didn't care! A hero couldn't discriminate, he couldn't just let this slide because he was Oban and Obans were the 'bad guys' or something stupid like that! Even if he was grounded forever after this he was going to help!

A moment after this thought went through his head he tackled one of the two 'helpers' at the knees, the two of them going down into a heap. Doing so caused all hell to break loose though as the girl gave a shriek and jumped on the back of her brother, pulling on his hair, and the Oban started to rush forward, knocking the second 'helper' out of his way as he tried to get to the girl hanging off his aggressor. Lixes sat up right, opening his mouth to try to say something that might help... only to get punched in the midsection by the one he'd tackled. Yeah... he probably deserved that. Coughing and gasping for a breath he rolled to the side, one arm wrapped around his middle. He pushed himself up to his feet... and got another a couple more punches in the middle and face, all blows that he knew he deserved for getting in the way he but didn't care.

Lifting his arms up to block he glanced toward the others, watching as one Oban tussled with the second 'helper' and the Shifter girl continued her assault on her brother. It seemed that, despite being a girl, she wasn't having any of her brother and his 'stupid friends' as she called them. Turning his head to one side to spit out some blood he looked at the one before him and said, "You really shouldn't do this! There is no reason to beat him up because he's Oban! That's just stupid, the war is over!" He said, defending the attacks coming his way the best that he could, not exactly well versed in hand to hand fights. It was apparently something he needed to get better at if he was going to be a hero.

The fight was causing him to get pushed backwards, finding himself tripping over a couple roots, barely able to stay up on his feet. There was an awful grunting sound that ripped through the air suddenly, causing everyone to give pause, all of them turning toward the sound... and all of them seemed to wince as they saw the source of the sound. It would seem that the very unimpressed Shifter girl had decided the best way to deal with her brother was to hit him where it really counted. It was something that all the guys, no matter what side they were on, sympathized with. The girl whirled around, hands on her hips, as he looked the others over, eyes narrowing on the lock of them, "Poi, Shaen, the two of you are completely morons for helping my moron of a brother! What I do in my free time is up to e! If you don't back off I will unman you as well!" Words that had the two of them scrambling backwards, hands hovering protectively in front of that particular part of their anatomy.

She turned again, pointing at the Oban, "If I didn't love you I'd hit you, Thym!" She said, giving a shake of her head, and finally she rounded on Lixes. The girl gave him a long look, one that was annoyed, "We didn't need your help, I could have handled it on my own! It's not the first time I've deal with these morons that think I need protecting... but... thanks I supposed." With that she grabbed hold of the Oban by his hand, dragging him off.

Lixes watched her go, glanced around at the other three Shifters, and held up his hands, "Ahhh... no hard feelings!" With that he whirled around on his heel and rushed off in the other direction, not about to risk getting into a three on one fight. He was a hero, sure, but he wasn't a fool.
