Baby Steps

Leaving the ocean, it was something that he had thought about for some as a young Merkein but it wasn't something that he had dared to do... at least not until he'd gotten old enough, big enough, and confident enough that he felt that he was ready to do so. Of course the moment his head broke the surface and he found himself starring across the expanse of familiar water toward the land he found himself questioning if it were in fact a good idea. Was he ready for this? He'd spoken at length with other members of his tribe about what might be up here, what they felt about going to the surface, and opinions seemed to be split down the middle.

There were those who felt that going to the surface was far too dangerous, there were all manner of creatures up there that were a threat, and as such it was best to stay under the water. Why leave the water and your family to explore a world that you weren't even born into he'd been asked on several occasions. He understood that to a point, he was Merkein, a creature of the sea, and that was where he was meant to be, right? There were others though, those that he considered to be the 'big bads' of the group, who that said that those who went to the surface, were better off. Why? It was because they were the ones that gathered orbs from the various species of dragons that only roamed the land unlike the ocean where only the powerful Peisio were found. Gathering many dragon orbs for ones self allowed a Merkein to become something special! So in the end he found himself debating between what it was that he felt that he should do now that he was here. He could either go forward, leaving the water that he had been swimming in since the day of his birth, or he could return home.

"Hmm... what to do, what to do...?" He mused to himself, blowing bubbles in the surface of the water as he thought it over. He didn't mind staying with his family, he loved the group after all, but at the same time did he want to give up this chance? He knew that it was difficult to leave the water, to gather all the orbs he would need, and one day become a Merkeinian, but did he want that to stop him? If he just thought about the difficulty of it and allowed the difficulty rule him that would just make him appear as a weakling. He couldn't let fear rule over him... which meant that he wold need to go forth. He would face many things that he'd never seen before, meet land dwellers, fight with dragons, gather orbs, and many, many other things... so he felt the strong desire to do exactly that. He wanted to do more, be more, fight, grow strong, make friends, learn new things... if he stayed in the water there would be much that he would miss out on.

Giving a nod of his head he started toward the nearest beach, "I need to go forth from the sea." He told himself, he would go forth, learn all he could, make a name for himself, and on day he would become something spectacular! To leave the water was merely the first step toward greatness and perhaps one day he would be able to find himself standing amongst the 'big bads' as one of their own, someone that was as strong as they were! Smiling all the way the Merkein known as Tallulah left the water, heading up onto the sandy shore, ready to meet his first challenge! Though what it was he couldn't say he was sure yet... but he'd figure it out soon enough he was sure!

A Not Exactly Friendly Chat

Tallulah didn't think that the big, scarred up Diabi was all that too pleased with him and the fact that he had tried to get himself eaten by that dragon. It didn't take all that long either for the other to prove his assumptions correct as the big guy suddenly whirled around to face him, starring down at Tallulah with those glowing red eyes of his, and gave a rather displease growling sound, "A-Ahh... I-I can explain!" He suddenly cried out at the Diabi, as though afraid that if he didn't come up with the right sort of explanation that he was going to end up getting himself eaten or something. He couldn't see this guy as being a sweet and fluffy sort, not with the way that he looked, no this guy was utterly terrifying and it was all that Tallulah could do to keep from trying to run from him. What had he done to deserve this Fate? First he was chased by a mean, hungry dragon, and then his 'savior' turned out to be from the scariest clan out there. He had a moment where he found himself rethinking even having left the ocean. Had he known it would be this scary up here maybe he'd of stayed home for at least a little bit longer.

The Diabi's barbed tail lashed from side to side for a moment before he gave a snorting sound, "You can explain? Explain what?! Why a wimp like you is roaming around Eowyn trying to get turned into dragon chow?" He spat out, what was it with this guy and seeming to just make Eyphah have the overwhelming desire to shake him, "Not to mention that you are... are... Bah, I don't even know what you are but obviously you are some sort of cripple! You shouldn't be Eowyn roaming alone your condition!" This Drakein before him was strange, it didn't have any wings! Surely that alone was enough to make the rest of the clan this one was from want to keep him safe, right? Why were they just letting him roam around on his own in strange and dangerous lands?! Someone like this needed to be kept under lock and key if you asked him, preferably before he got himself or others into trouble.

There was a long moment where Tallulah just starred at him before he shook his head, barring his teeth, giving the best growl he could muster despite being so afraid of the big Diabi. His courage seemed to falter there though and as he tried to speak up again it just came out as a stuttering mess, "I-I am not a wimp! Nor am g-gonna be d-dragon chow!" He cried out, alright, maybe that wasn't true. He couldn't say that he was feeling all that brave at the moment, if anything he was feeling nothing more then the desire to go hide somewhere. What came next though had him starring at the Diabi, his mouth agape, before he gave a hiss, "C-Cripple?! I am not a cripple! What are you talking about?" He hissed out, not sure where that had come from but he wasn't going to stand for being made out to be some sort of weak body wimp! He had his pride and no matter how shaken up he was at the moment he wouldn't let this mean b*****d take that from him.

"Not cripple? Look at you! You don't have any wings! Or maybe you haven't noticed that? Are you so sheltered as to think that is normal?" Eyphah demanded, wondering if this one had gotten a blow to the head while he was out roaming the hot sands of Eowyn. Given how he was acting he wouldn't doubt such a thing had occurred.

Tallulah shook his head from side to side then said, "O-Of course I don't have wings! I am Merkein you idiot! None of us have wings, we have gills and fins!" He said, lifting up on his back legs so that he could point with the front ones. Of course the moment the words left his mouth he realized all manner of things wrong with them. First off he'd called the scary Drakein an 'idiot' which likely wouldn't go over well, one of of that he'd told him about Merkein as though the Diabi should know about them. Given how few knew about them maybe acting as though the Diabi should know about them was rude? He was just a little riled up over this guy thinking that he was a cripple just because he had no wings. None of his people had wings so there was absolutely nothing wrong with them! They were just different was all!

Another long silenced dragged out between them before Eyphah was suddenly circling around Tallulah like a predator hunting prey, inspecting every last inch of him as though seeing hi for the first time. After what felt like an eternity to Tallulah the Diabi suddenly... chuckled? Lifting up on his back legs as well Eyphah gave Tallulah a pat on the head, "A Merkein, eh? Never heard of you... but I think for the moment maybe it would be best if you stuck by me. I have a feeling that if I let you go that you are gonna get yourself killed in an instant." He said, not sure why he was suddenly feeling so charitable, maybe it was because he found himself face to face with something so new and different? He'd never seen nor heard of a Merkein before, found himself wanting nothing more then to learn more about them, see how tough they were, and try to train this softy to keep him from dying. Would be a shame if something so rare was killed due to an overabundance of stupidity.

Settling down so that he was sitting the Diabi then announced, "My name is Eyphah and from now on I am your teacher." Words said with such confidence and strength that Tallulah could only nod his head stutter out, "I-I'm... I'm T-Tallulah..."

The Gaili Orbs

It had been a couple days since Eyphah had picked Tallulah up and he was basically treating the Merkein as his pet project. It seemed as though the idea of getting to train someone else was exciting to the big Diabi though personally Tallulah couldn't help but to wonder if perhaps the Diabi was just slacking off on his own training. It wasn't something that he would dare to suggest though because he was more then certain that it would just get him into a world of trouble with his new 'teacher'. Best that he just follow along after him, keep his mouth shut, and do as he was told to do so that he had a better chance of making it through this adventure in learning.

"Alright, so first off the biggest problem is that the Kiandri aren't a 'starter' dragon." Eyphah was saying, turning to look over at the Merkein, looking him over, taking in what weapons he had and what he didn't have that Eyphah did. This one seemed a lot... softer, didn't he? It would make things a lot more difficult for him in the long run but maybe he'd be able to figure it out given time and a chance to test himself against others? The lack of a barb on his tail, a lack of scythe claws, a lack of lots of spines and such, it really did make him wonder what it was that this one was going to be good at... though he wondered, would he able the sort that used magic? Eyphah found the idea of using those powers a bit on the dull side, instead wanting to be in there and fight in a hands on manner. Still... if that was what this one was going to be good at then at least there was hope for Tallulah.

Giving a little rumble in his throat he continued, "Serenia, we should go to Serenia. There you can fight those worthless Ysali. Nothing really worth fighting, not for me at least, but they would be good fodder to throw you against." He said, grinning then as he thought about pushing Tallulah into a fight against those stupid green skins. He nodded again, "Yes... that is what we will do! We will go... there and... hm... do you smell that?" He asked, seeming to forget what they were talking about as he caught the scent of something in the air, the heavy scent of... carrion? His tail set to wagging behind him and he looked rather pleased over the scent and suddenly training Tallulah was all but forgotten, "Come on, smells like there is something tasty to be had not far from here." He said, suddenly racing ahead.

Tallulah looked there for a moment, head cocked to one side, confusion in his eyes, before he rushed after him as quickly as he could. He wasn't sure what was so great about carrion but if Eyphah wanted to find it he couldn't do anything about it. Best that he stick with him since it seemed that he had a plan about training... at least one that would come into play when the Diabi wasn't as distracted as he seemed to be at the moment.

Up ahead of him there was a cry of delight from Eyphah, one that had Tallulah pushing himself to run that much faster after his self proclaimed teacher, wondering what it was that had him so excited. As he finally reached the Diabi's side, his chest heaving from the exertion, he looked up at him, "W-What... what is it? S-Some good c-carrion?" He asked in a wheezing tone of voice before looking in front of him. As he took in what was there his eyes went wide and he lifted his head to look from side to side, "Ahh... what the..." It looked as though there was one damn impressive and violent battle here. The sand was a mess, stained red with blood, a few massive rocks looked as though they had been up ended, the ground was all shifted oddly, and there were a couple bodies that belonged to the two legs... laying near to those bodies was something even more interesting too, orbs. Blinking a couple times he turned to look over at Eyphah in a wide eyed manner, "They... they were fighting dragons?"

Eyphah nodded, trotting forward to poke at one of the orbs before scooping it up, looking it over, then grinned, "Hello beautiful, I haven't seen one of your kind around here before." He purred, sniffing at the orb before smirking, "I think it belongs to one of those rare Gaili guys that are supposed to live in this area. Horrible powerful dragons, never seen one before but it seems like these two fools thought to take them on." He said, tossing one of the orbs to Tallulah, deciding to keep the other one for himself, "Their loss, our gain, keep a tight hold on that one, you don't want to lose it." He said before he leaned over, grabbing hold of one of the two-legs in his jaws, "Grab the other, they are dinner tonight." He said around the one in his mouth.

Tallulah starred down at the other two-legs in an uncertain manner, never having eaten one of them before, but did as he was told and grabbed hold of it by the leg. He didn't want to starve and they were already dead so it wasn't as though he'd killed them, right? It would be a waste to just leave them to rot he told himself, moving to follow along after Eyphah, "So... after dinner, then Serenia?" He asked around the leg in his mouth.

Eyphah paused, chuckled around the meat in his mouth, then nodded, having forgotten all about that for a moment there, "Yeah, dinner, some rest tonight, then we make our way to Serenia so you can start your battle training. I think that even someone like you can hold your own there." He said, as though that were what he was planning all along. No reason to let Tallulah know that the free orb and the free meat had caused him to momentarily forget about all that. He knew what he was doing after all... for real.

To Ayr We Go!

The two Drakein had settled down for the night in the deep forest of Serenia, with Tallulah happily purring over the trio of green orbs that he had been able to obtain during his battles. Three orbs! Three beautiful, wonderful, glittering orbs, orbs that were going to help him to get stronger one day! He couldn't help but to wag his tail and smile at Eyphah, "Aren't they great, Eyphah? I was thinking of maybe trying to get some more of them when the sun rises." He chirped happily, his tail wagging behind him. He wanted more them after all, lots more! It seemed as though it were kind of an addictive hobby once he started and Tallulah wanted nothing more to get as many of the pretty orbs as Eyphah said that he had gathered thus far. The Diabi made it seem as though he was going to need to gather a whole mountain of them, something that was a little intimidating to Tallulah but surely he could do it, right? He nodded at the thought before he set to tapping a the tip of his claw against one of the orbs in a happy manner.

Pausing in his glee he lifted his head up to look away from the trio of orbs and over to Eyphah instead, starring at him for a moment before he spoke up, "You know... there was that 'very important' thing that you were going to tell me about..." He reminded Eyphah, watching the Diabi instead of just gazing at the pretty orbs that he'd gathered so far. He was still curious as to what it was that Eyphah was thinking about so hard. What was the 'very important' thing that he was planning on telling about and when was it that he going to be telling him it? Soon he hoped, it was starting to drive him crazy with curiosity he thought to himself.

Eyphah grinned a bit as the Peisio purred over his orbs before he was suddenly questioning him, something that caused the dark colored Drakein to perk up some before he glanced toward the North, "I know that you are wanting to fight for more Ysali orbs, I understand since they are pretty, but I think that maybe we should move on toward a new land and new prey. You did well enough against the Ysali but we don't want you to grow complacent or lazy. There are other dragons out there, ones that are stronger then the weakling Ysali, and the ones called the 'Ayrala' are the ones you should hunt next." He told him, not at all surprised by the look of shock that was on the features of the Merkein. He could tell instantly from that expression that he was likely thinking that they were going to stick around Serenia much longer but he didn't see any point. Given how quickly it was that Tallulah was able to take down the Ysali, even after his initial desire to run away from them at least, the Diabi knew sticking around would be a waste of time. He needed to continue to fight stronger and stronger opponents after all, it was the only way that he would get stronger himself. Sitting around Serenia too long would make him get far too comfortable, something he wouldn't allow!

"So... Ayrala dragons then..." Tallulah murmured, not sure what he thought about the idea about moving on so quickly. He wasn't sure that he was really that good at fighting yet, not nearly as good as Eyphah seemed to think that he was. What if it was just luck that had allowed him to defeat the Ysali dragons? What if he wasn't ready to go to Ayr yet? He couldn't help but to fret a bit, not wanting to get too ahead of himself since that might cause him to get hurt or killed or something... but looking at Eyphah, at the confidence that he had about him, he felt that he maybe he should trust him? Surely if things started to go too badly then he would jump in... right? At least he sure hoped so. Eyphah didn't seem the sort that would just let him get eaten... alright, so then he could do this he told himself despite the fact that he felt almost dizzy from nervousness at the moment.

Shifting himself so that his head was resting on the ground, his nose between a couple of his orbs, he starred up at Eyphah, "So... when are we leaving then?" He asked, tail lashing slowly from side to side as he waited for what he was almost certain would be a time frame that was far too soon for his living. He felt as though they were racing toward the finish line and already he was starting to feel a bit as though he were out of breath... but he wanted to catch up to his teacher one day so he supposed he couldn't slack off, could he? Besides, Eyphah didn't seem the sort that would allow someone to go against one of his ideas.

"In the morning. For now we are gonna rest, sleep off our dinner, and then be on our way when the sun rises." He said as he flopped over onto one side lazily, giving Tallulah a glance through one glowing eye before he said, "You will be fine. This is how we toughen you up! Soon enough you will be defeating dragons left and right in your sleep with a pile of orbs in your lair." He said in a reassuring manner. With that he closed his eyes and was snoozing away, seeming as though he hadn't a care in the world. He seemed to have all the confidence in the world in the plan he'd laid out and Tallulah knew that for the time trusting Eyphah was probably his best bet.

Sure, it intimidated him a little knowing that he was going to be jumping to a whole other species of dragons in a whole new land so soon but... he could do this. He would have to keep telling himself that over and over like a mantra to get himself to believe it but surely it was the truth. He was sure that this was something that Eyphah himself had done, right? He'd fought the Ysali, the Ayrala, and the Kiandri as well as others he didn't even know about. His was the lead that Tallulah had to follow! Following someone strong, learning from him, it would in turn make Tallulah strong! With this in mind he let his eyes close, drew in some steadying breaths, and willed himself to sleep. Today would be a big, busy day, and he didn't want to be groggy since that would prove to make everything more difficult. A good night's sleep was a must in this situation and he meant to get just that.

Plots and Plans

It appear as though it was that time again, time to leave from one continent to another, moving one from sort of dragon to the next, and much to Tallulah's surprised it seemed as though they were heading back to Eowyn. That was the sandy world where everything had started, where Tallulah and Eyphah had met for the first time, and he supposed that it made sense that they were going back. It seemed as though they were training so that Tallulah would get strong enough be able to fight on his own in such a place instead of just running, and it would seem as though Eyphah felt he was ready. It was a little intimidating, to think that soon enough he was going to be there, fighting the very dragons that he'd been running away from what felt like only a short time ago. Lifting his head up he glanced over at where Eyphah was laying, at the opening to the cave, keeping an eye out for any Ayrala that might come seeking revenge. Both Tallulah and Eyphah himself in the past had hunted the silvery dragons and they couldn't be certain that they wouldn't come after them in the night. The Diabi was being cautious, something that Tallulah was grateful for, but he didn't want to leave it all on his shoulders.

Creeping forward quietly he laid down next to the big Diabi, giving him the best smile that he could conjuor up at the moment, then looked out of the cave toward the direction of the ocean. He couldn't hear it over the strong winds that seemed to always be blowing across Ayr but at least he could see it he thought to himself, "How are you doing? Any sign of danger?" He asked in a hushed tone of voice, not wanting to draw attention if the dragons hadn't noticed them already. This cave had served them well and the last thing he wanted was to make the Ayrala aware of it. It might very well serve someone else in the future after all, he'd rather it remain a safe haven for anyone who might want to use it.

The Diabi gave a great yawn before turning to look over at Tallulah, giving him a sharp toothed smile, "They wouldn't dare com here, it would far too dangerous for them, and they know their lives and orbs would be forfeit if they were dumb enough to try it." He said, tail lashing slowly from side to side. If you asked him it would be rather exciting, not to mention fun, if the dragons actually thought to attack them head on. They wouldn't though, would they? They would take the cowardly route, would skulk around, wait for their chance, wait for an opening. From there they would then attack the moment that they thought Eyphah and Tallulah had dropped their guard. It was because these dragons were far to weak to fight in the same way that Eyphah preferred to fight, not to mention they were too weak to face off against them any longer, "Once the sun rises what little threat there is will disappear completely and we can be on our way toward greener pastures... so to speak." He added, chuckling over the fact that he had referred to Eowyn of all places as 'greener pastures'. It was obvious he found his own joke quite amusing.

There was a long moment where Tallulah starred at Eyphah as he laughed at his own jokes, before he gave a bit of a smile, "You really are an odd one, aren't you Eyphah?" He asked in a teasing manner. The Diabi was beyond strange, just look at his eating habits after all, but the Merkein couldn't help but to like him regardless. Eyphah had done far too much in the past for Tallulah to ever want to turn on him. Even if he was Diabi, something that had gotten a bad reputation from all the stories he heard when he was little, he'd stick around for as long as he was allowed to do so. Eyphah was his best friend on land after all, as well as his teacher. He saw no reason at the moment to part ways with him. The moment that he thought that Eyphah spoke up, saying something that Tallulah never expected him say...

"Once we get back to Eowyn I think that a hunt is in order, not a solo one like you have been going on recently but instead we will be going out of this one together. I am getting rusty and my claws ache to rend some flesh. Best to get that out of my system so that I can continue to train you to the best of my ability." While the Diabi knew that Tallulah was gaining ground fast, might even end up as strong as him one day soon, he wasn't going to say that out loud. Best that the Merkein continued to think Eyphah all powerful. It was how he liked it, it helped to stroke the Diabi's ego like nothing else could, and he refused to give up that particular feeling any time soon, even if it meant doing a lot of hunting when they returned home so that he could stay ahead of Tallulah. It might seem silly to others but to Eyphah it was quite important.

"Hunting together? Really? Do you think I am ready for that?" The Merkein asked, then started to wag his tail happily, smiling away, "I should see about getting some rest then, that was we can head out at dawn, get to Eowyn quickly, and start out hunting!" His voice was a cheerful one now, one that had the Diabi grinning. It seemed that both of them were pleased at the moment, though for different reasons, and Tallulah was soon going to curl up in the darker part of the cave, wanting to rest up and ready himself for the long swim to Eowyn. As he did that Eyphah was back to guard duty, more determined then ever to keep Tallulah safe since the other guy amused and pleased him so much.
