Obligation
Lian never wanted this.
He narrowed his eyes, sky blue irises piercing through the dim lighting of the café. The man lowered his body to the table’s level as the slender cue in his hand smoothly moved between his fingers. A calculating gaze swept across the table to take in the balls’ positions. He straightened back up and moved to the other side of the table before retaking his position. The slow piano music playing in the background didn’t bother. Neither did the occasional coughing and shuffling of glasses. He slid the cue stick back and forth before finally hitting the cue ball with precision. The force propelled it forward until it clinked against a solid red ball, which ricocheted against the wall before cleanly rolling into one of the four corners. Lian circled to the other side of the table while he mulled over his next move. He bent over, but quickly stood up again. His eyes flickered over to the window.
It was dark. He would have to begin patrol soon. Lian’s eyebrows furrowed as the revelation entered his thoughts. Somehow, the student had gotten dragged into some knighthood. A couple months had already passed since his awakening, but things were still unclear to him. One thing was definite though—he was now obligated to run around the city and protect people from the youma that roamed the streets.
Youma was a new term introduced to him upon his awakening. Before this entire knight business, he had already just thought of the unusual creatures to be nameless monsters. At the time, their source and mere existence had perplexed him. Such abominations shouldn’t be feasibly possible, yet here they were filling Destiny City’s streets and terrorizing civilians.
And it was his duty to stop these creatures and the Negaverse.
Lips pressed together tightly as he leaned forward to send another ball into a different corner of the table. It was a noble cause, but when had he ever wished for such responsibilities to be thrust upon him? Never.
He shot the final ball into one of the four pockets and sighed. Lian took a moment to lean on the table before pushing himself upright again. He grabbed a nearby cloth to clean the cue stick before he gingerly placed it in the rack. Then he returned to the pool table to collect the balls and rearranged them back into a triangle for the next player. His fingers gently touched the triangle rack as he stared at the setup with soft eyes. When was the last time he had calmly sped through a game of billiards on his own? Things flew by so quickly or perhaps his lackluster sleep was getting to him. Lian tapped his nails against the rack before reluctantly letting go and paying the employee.
“Thanks.” The employee nodded as Lian stalked out, hands sliding into his pockets as he stepped into the cold night. He shuddered at the chilly weather and grumbled. He was expected to run around sleeveless in these kinds of temperatures? That was just asking too much.
Not that it stopped him from walking into an alley and powering up. He would see this through, stubborn and all.
