It had been Leon's treat - a day out at the zoo to cheer his baby sister up. Selena had loved days like this when she was younger, dragging her older brothers around the zoo to see the lions and tigers and elephants and everything! Having one older brother would have been enough - but twins? It was a dream come true for the attention-seeking youngest Adams child. Unfortunately, the situation wasn't quite the same as when she had been younger. Theo was in Miami with his beautiful fiancee, and as for her parents...well, they were gone. But Leon was here, and he'd treated her to lunch and an ice cream before he'd suddenly been called away to work.

His job as a night guard was only temporary, to raise funds for his travel adventures. She'd be sad when he was gone, although the thought of having her own apartment was one she was thoroughly interested in. Of course, she wouldn't be getting the apartment they were in now - she was saving up for her own, and keeping an eye and/or ear out for possible roommates.

Opting to stay at the zoo while her brother rushed off to cover a shift had been a good choice, Selena mused to herself. She strolled past an enclosure full of tamarins, a smile twitching the corners of her mouth as she watched the small primates hop from one tree to another, clambering along ropes and climbing frames and other various interactive stimuli they'd been provided with. She'd dressed for the weather - wooly grey cable tights with a pair of simple striped shorts and a thick wooly jumper. She pulled her scarf a little tighter around her neck, shivering as a breeze blew past. She should probably be heading home soon.

He tried not to visit the zoo too often, but sometimes Lian couldn’t resist the temptation to drive over and purchase a single ticket. While his friends didn’t mind his peculiar habit of suddenly disappearing to the zoo, they often nagged him to bring them along. He probably should have, but he didn’t. Lian never did. He was a bit on the loner side, but some time away from his rowdy classmates and friends was often needed for him to stay sane. His breath came out in fleeting clouds of white when he arrived Saturday morning, hands gently tugging at the maroon scarf neatly wrapped around his neck. As he walked through the pathways, he briefly noticed the lack of people, but the observation didn’t come as shocking to him. For most people, Lian assumed they preferred watching animals in the spring or summer rather than in the winter. There were some things that could only be seen in the winter, however. It was their lost, he supposed.

He pulled his dark coat even tighter around himself when he eventually settled at the exhibit for tamarins. Long fingers drummed against the metal bars of the fences as Lian leaned against the barrier. A quick glance to the side informed the young man that there was only one or two others staring at the primates like he was. Mute and stoic, Lian returned his attention to the tamarins and watched, standing still for who knew how long. It seemed he had been observing for a while, because the next time he looked around he realized that it was only him and a girl watching the habitat. Lian noticed her shiver before he faced forward, eyes locked on the monkeys. “Cold?”

Lian had never been much of a conversationalist.

Selena hadn't noticed the people standing around her - somewhere like this she much preferred to view the animals. They were fascinating, especially the small monkeys. Like miniature trapeze artists - she found herself briefly wondering if people had ever considered using them instead of people at the circus. She was interrupted by the voice of a boy standing not too far from her - a quick glance around revealed that they were the only two people around.

"A little," she replied, beginning to smile before realizing that her face was obscured by the scarf in question. She reached up a slender hand and pulled it down so her lips were visible, not wanting to seem rude or intimidating. "Aren't you? It's freezing!"

Maybe she just got cold easily.

Lian’s expression was serious, but when was it not serious? Sometimes it got confused or annoyed, but there was always a mixture of serious in it. His face seemed stuff as he nodded at her answer. “I see,” he murmured as he temporarily returned his attention back to the primates. He wasn’t completely sure why he had called out to her, a complete stranger of all people, but it was only them and it was freezing. Lian preferred to be alone, but being by himself on a cold day at the zoo got pretty tiring after a certain point. He glanced down at his current attire, then back at her. When Lian pulled his arms out from his pockets they were rather pale and he swore they were close to turning a purple-blue. “Yes, and it is.”

He was pretty sure he had packed some gloves somewhere. Lian felt around his pockets until he pulled them out, black and woolen. His gaze switched between his gloves and the woman. “Do you want them?” He didn’t need them. Really. Honest.

Really.

This was a little...awkward. Selena was a chatty girl, but even she struggled to keep a conversation going where there was no effort from the other participant. As the boy turned his attention back to the monkeys, so did she, a smile twitching the corners of her mouth as she watched one swinging on a branch. They didn't seem to feel the cold at all, but then that could be something to do with the fluffy coat they had.

He seemed pretty cold too, and his hands were horribly pale as he fetched a pair of black gloves from his pockets. Huddling into her scarf, Selena quickly shook her head when he offered them to her, "No no no, your hands must be freezing!" It was a lovely thing for him to offer, and she was grateful for his chivalry - but there was chivalry, and then stupidity. Glancing around, confirming for the second time that most people had retreated to somewhere warm, Selena turned back to the boy with a smile. "Do you fancy going somewhere a bit warmer? There's the zoo's little cafe the other side of this exhibit."

She wasn't sure why she offered, since he didn't seem very talkative. She figured it was the polite thing to do.

Lian stared at Selena for a few seconds, observing her expression as she refused the gloves. Then he looked away and moved to slip them on. “Okay then.” He flexed both of his hands a couple times each. His hands were still freezing, but at least now there was some warmth. Perhaps in a few minutes his hands wouldn’t feel so cold. Stiff fingers gripped the railing as he mulled over her offer. He knew about the café she was referring to. Lian had been there plenty of times and the food they served were pretty decent. “Sure.” He uncurled his fingers one by one and stuffed them back into his coat.

“Since we’re going there together we should introduce ourselves. I’m Lian. What about you?”

She was glad that he wasn't the sort of boy to force the gloves on her. He could clearly see sense, despite being a perfect gentlemen, which was a combination you didn't often find in today's men.

Already thinking about the warmth of the cafe and the moist lemon drizzle cake she'd eyed earlier walking past the window, a bright smile graced the blonde's lips when her offer was accepted. He peeled his now-gloved hands from the railings and Selena turned slowly to begin walking in the direction of the warmth, keeping her pace casual enough so that he had time to catch up and walk alongside her. "Selena." Lian was an odd name, and she pondered briefly whether it was a shortened version of something. Liam was a more common name, but then she supposed the novelty of taking an ordinary name and making it 'unique' was something celebrities had coined and that was now filtering down into ordinary citizens.

"Are you still at school?"

If only Selena had known Lian’s full name. What kind of parents named their son after a mineral most people weren’t familiar with? Besides, Carnelian was a mouthful to say at times. Lian was shorter and quicker to say. He would have glared at his mother if she had decided to name him Lian rather than Liam. Liam was a normal name. It was a common name filled with less trouble, but beggars couldn’t be choosers. Carnelian-slash-Lian had to do.

He nodded his head. “Nice to meet you.” The phrase tumbled out his mouth without a second thought. Lian didn’t even think he was truly pleased to have company to converse with during his visit to the zoo. He walked forward, temporarily lengthening his strides until he was by the woman’s side. His eyes darted to the side to stare at Selena before they were looking straight ahead again. “Yes, I’m still in school. I’m studying to become a veterinarian.”

There was a small pause before he tentatively asked, “Are you?”

Small talk. It was not his friend.

Once he'd caught up Selena resumed a standard walking pace - being tiny herself she often found herself having to walk a bit quicker in order to keep up with everyone else. She didn't mind terribly, it was more an observation she'd made. Especially Leon. Leon and Theo were giants who loved nothing more than to mock their baby sister by walking ridiculously quickly so she was practically jogging just to keep up with them.

A vet? Selena's eyebrows raised and her eyes widened - a noble career path indeed. She'd thought about becoming a vet once, but then quickly realized that her bitter hatred for chemistry meant it was unlikely she'd ever achieve such a goal. She'd been alright with it back then, since performing had always seemed like the obvious career choice for her. She glanced down to her ankle briefly, letting out an inaudible sigh. How things had changed - she'd certainly never have thought she'd be an assistant secretary trying to scrape together any spare cash to afford her own flat. She didn't really have a career path now - she didn't want to be a secretary for the rest of her life.

"No, not at the moment. I went to Meadowview a couple of years ago but then had to move out of state."

Maybe she could start taking night classes or something. "I'm working at that posh boys school at the moment - Azure Valley?" She only realized her mistake after she'd spoken, and silently prayed that he wasn't a Valley boy...or that if he was he didn't take offence.

Lian still held his gaze forward, only sometimes darting to the side to glance at Selena before he returned his attention back toward the café as it drew closer. The man hadn’t expected the woman to remain silent at his answer, but it didn’t make him uncomfortable per say. He was alright with it, appreciated it even. Most of his own friends were talkative, though he didn’t understand why. He couldn’t understand why he had this magnetism for chatterbox friends. It must have been some hidden talent, one he wished someone could take a way. It was comforting to hear only the sounds of his boots against the pavement until he heard her sigh.

The sigh caused him to turn his head. He managed to catch Selena looking down, though he didn’t know what exactly she was looking at. Was it the ground or her feet? He wasn’t sure, but he didn’t care so he looked back at the café. “Not at the moment?” repeated Lian. “So you plan to go back someday.” Lian nodded curtly. He had heard of Meadowview. He had also heard of Azure Valley. The young man had attended neither. “I’ve heard of Azure Valley. I’ve never visited it, but my friends tell me it is posh.”

Considering she was planning to go back to school, Lian assumed she wasn’t a teacher. “What do you do there?” He walked past the café’s tiny gates and looked around for free tables. Considering the chilly weather, the zoo wasn’t crowded and there was plenty of space. “Where do you want to sit?”

There must have been a questioning tone to her voice, or something she hadn't intended, because he seemed t jump to the conclusion that she was planning on returning to the education system. It was an interesting concept - at least she could get qualifications that way, get a better job. Ever since she'd been tiny her dream job had always been a professional dancer, she'd never given any thought to any other career. Now she thought about it...there were quite a few things she fancied trying.

Of course, money was going to be the real problem.

"It is pretty posh," she commented on her workplace, tucking a stray blonde strand back behind her ear again, "They wear, like, suit jackets and everything. Some of them have proper british accents and everything." They arrived at the cafe and she scanned the area, not surprised to find it mostly empty. Lian asked where she wanted to sit and she indicated the doors that lead into the main building, where central heating hopefully existed. "I'm an assistant secretary. I'm just trying to get the cash to get my own place at the moment - I don't really know what I want to do."

Since there were numerous empty tables inside she joined the small queue to get herself a coffee, assuming Lian would join behind her, "I assume you want to be a vet? That's pretty cool."

“British accents.” Lian actually scoffed. He could handle the suit jackets. The young man was confident there were multiple private schools than required boys to wear suit jackets or something similar, but British accents? Ridiculous. Once Selena pointed to a table, he nodded his head. “That’s understandable. Since I’m in college, my mother is paying for my tuition and other basics, but once I finish I’ll have to start looking for a job as well.” He paused. “But becoming a vet will take a while, so I still have a few more years after I get my bachelor’s.”

He followed after Selena, gloved hands in his pockets. “Yes. My mother is also a vet, so I’ve been with animals for most of my life.” His normally hard expression took on a softer quality. “I can’t imagine doing anything else.” Then his expression turned back to normal. "What do you plan on ordering?"
