His eyes weren’t deceiving him, right? While the professor began to drone in the background—no offense, but this course on Ancient Mythology had gotten dull pretty quick for the lad—Lian turned his head slightly to glance at the seat next to him. It was Aithne’s seat and it was empty. His expression remained blank when he angled his head forward again, pencil twirling in his hand. Gradually, a rare smirk tugged at his lips and Lian began to slowly lean back into his seat. It wasn’t everyday a certain Aithne was absent, but he would definitely make the most of this respite of peace. For all he knew, the dreaded woman would arrive the next day. He would savor the moment while he still could. Lian didn’t even bother to waste even a brain cell worrying over Aithne’s health. She rarely missed class, so perhaps this was serious, but he felt no remorse over his belief that Aithne should fall terribly ill and never come back to school. Yes, that would be lovely.
The door opened and he kept his sights focused on the professor and the notes scribbled on the board. It wasn’t going to be Aithne. There were other empty seats other than hers.

She'd woken up with a headache, a sniffle and a sore throat. Still not enough to keep Aithne out of school, as far as she was concerned. The cold had snuck up on her from nowhere, maybe she'd caught a chill watching meteors? Aithne wasn't a morning person, being sick didn't help at all. She glanced at the clock. 8 o'clock.
8 o'clock. 8 o'clock. 8 o'clock.
s**t.
Aithne hurriedly threw on her coat, grabbed her bag and ran. She was lucky enough to live close enough to DCU that she could walk to it. Most days, she appreciated it. Aithne didn't need a car, she could walk or take public transport around Destiny City. But sometimes, for example today, she cursed her decision. It was a fifteen minute walk to the school and class started in ten minutes.
She walked into class late. The professor didn't seem to take any notice, but several students glanced in her direction. She sank into her seat next to Carnelian and took a deep breath. And then proceeded sneeze to her right, where an unfortunate boy was sitting.

And then she finally came. His eyes darkened with frustration. There went his moment of peace, shattered for the next hour until the lecture finished and Lian could escape the classroom and her infuriating presence. His gaze flickered toward Aithne for less than a second before he turned back to his notes. Her light footsteps echoed louder with each passing second, causing the young man to slightly hunch over his things. Lian forced himself to ignore her presence so he could pay attention to the professor. It appeared to have worked. He heard the familiar creak of someone sliding into her seat, her deep breath before she sneezed.
All over him.
His stoic expression twisted with disgust as he glared at her. He wiped his arms dry and sent Aithne a sneer. “Why don’t you watch where you sneeze? You should be at home anyways.” It wasn’t that Lian actually showed concern for her health, but it was common sense to not attend class if you were ill.

She felt bad for sneezing on Carnelian. A little. A tad. Just a bit. Just a tiny bit. After all, if someone had sneezed all over her, she'd probably be displeased too.
Though, any pity she might have felt for the boy quickly melted away when Aithne saw his expression of disgust. The sneer he sent him sealed the deal. And despite her sore throat, and her headache and the fact that she'd been late, the girl could not bite back a sarcastic reply.
"Oh? Worried about me Carnelian? How unusual."

Lian had attempted to stare forward again after he released his retort, but he had ignited a miniature war between himself and Aithne. It wasn’t going to end anytime soon. He imagined he wouldn’t be able to jot down any decent notes this lesson either. What a pity.
He sighed. “It’s Lian. After so many years of being stuck together, I’d have thought you would have remembered,” he grumbled in a low voice. He turned his head toward the woman. “I’m only worried about your level of stupidity. I assumed that even you would know that there’s a flu going around and it’s incredibly contagious.”

"I don't recall us ever being on nick-name terms even after 'all these years' as you put it, Carnelian."
Aithne lifted her head to see what the Professor had written on the board before turning her attention back to her notebook. Unlike Carnelian, she was more than able to concentrate on the task at hand. If she was surprised to hear about the contagious flu going around, the girl didn't let that show on her face. What was more shocking was the fact that Carnelian almost seemed to care that she was sick. Was this a joke? Was he mocking her?

Lian glared. As much as his mother was fond of the name, it was too unusual for him to live with for the rest of his life. It was easier to call him Lian versus Carnelian, anyways.
“It’s less an affectionate term and more what you should call me by regardless of our...feud.” He shot her another glare for good measure. Only Aithne would stubbornly refer to him as Carnelian for so many years when everyone else had easily complied with his request to call him Lian instead. Grumbling, he reluctantly returned back to his notes, turning to a fresh page—what a waste of paper—and edging away from the woman. “If I get sick I will completely blame you.” It would only be more of a reason for him to hate her.
