Sadness is but a wall between two gardens.
(K. Gibran)

MOOD: Unsure, reflective.
MOOD: Excited, nervous.

Vyn’s breath lingered visibly on the glass, clouding the view outside. She sighed, further misting the surface, before raising one slender finger and pressing it to the glass. The cold stung, yet she didn’t really care as she drew something in the condensation. A couple of quick strokes later a name was marked on the window.

‘Shuura.’

Dark eyes stared wistfully at it; observing the beads of water gathering at the bottom of the letters, threatening to roll downwards and distort the frei’s previous guardian’s name.

However awful the teenager had looked after her, the meals of greasy junk food and the occasional thoughtlessness, she couldn’t help but miss the raven haired human, who had not only acted as her guardian but as a friend too. She’d given her a soul and looked after her throughout the start of her life. She’d even shaped her likes and dislikes, introduced her to her favourite type of music; J-rock. She was listening to it right now, the fast paced Japanese lyrics playing through brand-new headphones in her sloped ears. The sound quality was perfect and Vyn could almost imagine that she was at a live gig, her rune pulsating to the beat, the band on stage before her. However, she couldn’t quite relish the enjoyment it gave her. The headphones had been given to her by Shuura’s replacement...

She flicked her wings in distaste - If the old man thought he could buy her allegiance, he needed to re-think. So far he’d been nice enough; taken her in, given her a room, a new portable music player and insisted that if she needed anything all she needed to do was ask. But she didn’t quite trust the old man; she was used to the vibrant, young energy of Shuura, however this new man, Ethan, was old. His slower, more paced movements put her on edge. Or perhaps she just mistrusted those intelligent grey eyes in the slightly withered frame – plants only got withered when they were ill or about to die. But the man still seemed fit and healthy, and it didn’t quite seem right to the rose frei.

In fact, he was in the same room right now, perched on a sofa, feigning interest in one of the several fish tanks that were dotted around the apartment, whilst in reality he was occasionally sneaking concerned glances at her.

Pretending to ignore the old man’s stares Vyn cranked up the volume, fixing her attention on the view outside the window.

The winter weather made the beach seem deathly cold, and the sea with small white capped waves seemed bleak and unattractive. She tried to find some sort of plant to look at, a familiar rose... A tree? Anything? She felt so cut off from everything she was used to, no Shuura, no plants. Yes, she had been born in Gambino around this time, when frost laced the beaches rather than tourists, but not long after she’d been whisked back to Durem by Shuura.

Gaze slipping from the gaunt scene the frei found her attentions diverted back into the room. Deciding not to continue with her sulking she turned and silently glided past Ethan. She might as well do something with her time and she was feeling the slight tang of hunger.

Her room was, like all the other rooms, spacious. There was a clean red bedcover neatly-made on the bed. That had presumably been done by the maid. That was another thing she was not used to - Shuura’s room was always in a state of chaotic mess, but here, Ethan had a woman do all the cleaning for him and so everything always seemed pristine.

She closed the door and flicked the light switch.

The darkness wasn’t perfect, a slant of bright winter daylight lanced through a gap in the curtains but there was enough for her to feed.

Shadows coiled and writhed and her amber irises gleamed as she devoured the gloom. She felt more at ease as she experienced the satisfying feeling of quenching her hunger. As she fed she considered her predicament again, through the less irritable, well-fed mindset she was in; There seemed to be little she could do right now, Shuura had been deemed unable to look after her needs and she was pretty sure the LAB wouldn’t go back on that decision. She chewed one crimson painted nail thoughtfully. The old man wasn’t that bad... At least he seemed to leave her to her own devices for now. Perhaps she should take him up on his offer whilst it was still standing.

Getting some more music on this new-fangled gift wouldn’t be half-bad after all... Maybe she could be bought over. Just for now..

.
The young frei felt a strange sense of accomplishment as they left the park. The cold didn't bother her and for a change one of her headphones hung loose - she wasn't blocking Ethan out totally, for about the first time since being adopted she wanted to talk to him. It seemed to be a bit of a miracle, almost unbelievably fortunate that such a chance encounter could send her emotions skittering out of their normal formation. She floated alongside the older man, and as they reached the entrance to the park where they'd move from the tranquil palm tree anvenues to the still slightly busy roads she coughed quietly.

"Ethan, can I ask for something?"

The girl's request didn't register at first and it wasn't until a few awkward seconds later that Ethan cocked his head, eyes eagerly resting upon the girl, curious to know what she wanted.

"Yes, of course."

Vyn bit her lip, nervously glancing around for the poster she'd spotted earlier. Of course she found it almost instantaneously, her keen night vision making an easy job of finding the advertisement. Ethan followed her gaze and strode over to it, a bemused expression forming. The poster was pinned to the park's gates, it must've been put up not too long a go - as it did not seem weathered at all, the shiny poster paper almost pristine and untarnished by weather.

"You'd like tickets?" He mused, tracing a finger over the details, skim reading them to make sure it all seemed all right. He was happy to say that she could go if all seemed well and good, money was no problem and if it made Vyn happy then he was willing to put himself up for it.

Just as Vyn had expected Ethan was keen to score some brownie points and had thrust himself into the idea, already she could see him figuring out the best way to get tickets - probably thinking about how to pull some strings to get her some special privileges, he wasn't satisfied with anything but the best. However she was finished yet and interrupted the spinning cogs of his brain with a muted throat clearance.

"Can Rivener come too?" She asked, dark eyes urging him to agree.

The businessman considered the girl's request for a few seconds before nodding. "So long as Aphismet is ok with him coming, then I suppose so." A wry smile coiled across Ethan face - this was a perfect opportunity, not only would he be able to spend some time with Vyn whilst she was enjoying herself, but he'd also be able to get to know who appeared to be her only friend.

Silence crept back over the pair, but it was a comfortable silence. As both went home they felt content with the way the feeding excursion had played out.

To create a little flower is the labor of ages.
(W. Blake)

MOOD: Exasperated, Tired.

It was difficult to know what to do for Vyn’s birthday, and Ethan was trying his best to formulate a day that the quiet raevan would appreciate.

There were evidently problems presented to all raevan owners when preparing an event like this. For a start, the lack of anything chest down meant cake was off the menu; Ethan couldn’t exactly craft birthday food out of shadows. In fact everything was off the menu, so the normal human birthday food, like cute little cocktail sausages, neatly made sandwiches and crisps, had to be excluded from the plans. Party games seemed pretty impossible too; they required a group of people. But so far, the only ‘friend’ that Vyn could invite round was Rivener and a game of ‘pin the tail on the donkey’ would be rather pathetic with only two players. Vyn’s dislike for bright lights meant that they couldn’t enjoy another traditional feature of gaining another year; there would be no blowing out of candles at this party. All in all, he was hard pressed for thinking up a good way of celebrating Vyn’s third year of life.

The aged business man sat down on a sofa, grasping a cup of tea in one hand – running the other through his thinning grey hair. “Who knew organising stuff like this could get my feathers ruffled when I can clinch business deals without batting an eyelid..” He grunted, clearly irritated at how difficult and vexing it was to think of something the shadow frei would smile at. If it wasn’t for his success at finding presents that he thought Vyn would love he would probably be fuming by now.

3 neatly wrapped gifts sat on the glass coffee table in front of him. They were all wrapped identically in black paper with a neatly tied red ribbon. Vyn seemed to like that colour combination, so Ethan had made sure to utilise that snippet of knowledge about her preferences as he seemed to be fighting an uphill struggle to please her, every little thing mattered. The first of the three was medium sized, rectangular and its outward appearance didn’t give any clues to what it was. He was quietly proud of this idea as he’d spotted it whilst in town and had snapped it up, knowing it would be perfect for Vyn. Inside there was a thick book on the front of which said ‘A step by step guide to beginners Japanese’. Not only a book, but inside the cover were two disks; One could be loaded onto the computer and transferred to Vyn’s MP3 for audio lessons and the other provided classes on the computer – since bumping into Rivener Ethan had seen Vyn trying to use the computer more and even looking up Japanese lessons online.

The second gift was more tell tale in its shape and had quite surprisingly stemmed from Ethan’s observations of Vyn on the computer. Whilst trying to use the computer in the office Vyn had seemed to become quietly fond of one of the two birds that Ethan had received at Christmas, The blue peacock – a mysterious rose, just like Vyn. Ethan had been told that Vyn had a small companion when she was with Shuura but he’d stayed with Shuura. It was a possibility that the bird could fill in the gap that ‘squirt’ had left and so another cage had been purchased so that the peacock could be moved into Vyn’s room as a present.

The third present wouldn’t be a surprise to Vyn as she’d personally requested it, but of course Ethan had taken it a small step further. The present was small and very thin, inside the wrapping paper was three tickets to the J-rock concert in Durem in a few weeks time - One for Vyn, one for Rivener whom Vyn had wanted to come, and one for Ethan so that he could supervise. However, not only would the tickets get them into the concert, but Ethan had arranged that they’d had ‘VIP All access granted tickets’. It’d cost a hefty price but it’d be worth it if it induced a smile onto Vyn’s face.

Ethan glanced at the clock...

2:00 am.

Sighing he finished his tea and stood up. He’d stayed up this late and still hadn’t constructed any reasonable plan... For the moment he should get some sleep – the day would hopefully bring an idea, but if not, at least he was fairly confident that Vyn would like her gifts..

Where you tend a rose, thistles cannot grow.
(Frances Barnett)

MOOD: Confused.
MOOD: Faintly pleased.

The day had arrived. Three years of existence..

Vyn reflected over her life as she lay shrouded in blankets. Her eyes examined the pristine white wall of her room as she lay in the half darkness.

She was trying to figure out the meaning of this celebration of her ageing that was called a birthday.

Ethan had explained the basics, that humans enjoyed the passing of the years and that getting older showed increasing 'maturity'; but all that Vyn could think of right now was the different stages of her life. Faded shadowy images flitted around her head. She was half smiling as she remembered pleasant times with Shuura - the place where her soul was collected, the faint tune of j-rock, her smiling youthful face. Then, like shards through the shadows her new memories and thoughts appeared. They weren't unpleasant, but neither was she used to them and shrunk back; recoiling from the new light. She screwed up her eyes, in an attempt to blink away the bizarre new feelings that had begun to cut through her life - severing the old shadowy ties.

Ethan's voice was calling for her to wake, like the memories, it cut through her thoughts and she uttered a little complaint to herself. She wasn't sure if she wanted to attempt this new experience, but just like her adoption she had no choice in the matter and she cast off her blankets. Now or never, time to face the music.

Floating to the doorway she made her way to the living room where Ethan was waiting for her.

He was sitting on the black sofa, legs crossed, and a cup of tea in hand. In front of him on the coffee table were three neatly wrapped gifts. Another Confusion. Apparently gifts were meant to be given on birthdays too. She could guess what one of them was - she'd asked for concert tickets, but the other two remained a mystery. She managed an inquisitive smile, he seemed rather haggard and dark rings hung under his grey eyes. In fact, his eyes seemed to lack the intelligent gleam that normally clashed so much with his aged appearance. She could not ponder the reason for this – although after late night feeding trips he sometimes got a similar appearance.. Tired.. However she couldn’t guess why he’d be so tired. Hadn't he slept last night?

“Hello Vyn. Excited about your presents?” Ethan inquired, patting one of the gifts.

She nodded, she didn’t feel an intense desire to open the presents, but now that she could see the neatly wrapped objects she had a tingle of curiosity in her that wanted to know what Ethan had selected for her pleasure. "Shall I open them?" She asked. Of course her voice incited a gleam of a smile on Ethan's face. He nodded eagerly, pushing the largest gift towards her.

Taking it she ran her black painted nails along the domed shape. Surprisingly it was ridged and she could feel wire underneath. She couldn't help a quizzical expression forming on her face. "Open it." Ethan encouraged - taking another sip of his tea. Vyn untied the ribbon and peeled away the wrapping. Her head tilted as she examined what was inside. An ornate bird cage, similar to the one in Ethan's office. Confused Vyn looked at Ethan for an explanation. "You seem quite keen on the peacock in my office. So I got a cage so you can keep him in your room." Vyn liked that idea and she tapped the bars of the cage fondly. Ethan was right - she did like the rose bird and the prospect of having it with her to keep her company in her room made her lips twitch into a tiny smile.

Encouraged by her approval of the first present Ethan proceeded to get her to open the other gifts. She seemed satisfied with the Japanese book and he could almost sense a feeling of excitement in the shadow frei when she had the concert tickets in her hand.

.Ethan was a little bit disappointed.. But it took time to grow love. Small steps towards a big goal The remainder of the day was passed much like most other days since Vyn was adopted - no special ideas on how to celelbrate had truck the buisnessman. Vyn had disappeared into her room without really talking to him, but this time armed with the Japanese book and bird for company - atleast she accepted his gifts.. The goal was that tiny bit closer.

This was certainly a strange season for Vyn. Even more bizarre than the snowy period where presents were exchanged that Ethan had called Christmas... This valentines day seemed to be causing an even bigger stir around Gambino and Vyn wasn't sure what it was all about. Couples seemed to be increasingly common, they were snuggled up on benches in the evenings when she went feeding, little naked children wielding bows in shop windows and she did not comprehend why so many roses seemed to be popping up all over the place. However, rather than asking Ethan about it she'd turned to her new found informant - the Internet.

With a few taps of her black nails she'd got a good idea of what this unusual human celebration was about. Some weird occasion worshiping human love. People would go on 'dates', give chocolates as a sign of affection and exchange messages with each other telling them of their love. She pondered curiously what the point was... Why do it for one day only? The information she'd found didn't explain that.

As she pressed on in her search she sighed and gazed at the cage containing the albino crow that Ethan had. It seemed a little quieter now that it's blue companion had been moved to Vyn's room. Perhaps the bird wanted to send a valentine to his lost love. The thought made Vyn a little sad and she made a note to let the pair visit each other once in a while.

Returning to her search for answers Vyn decided to look through Ethan's emails to see if there were any clues there.. She had no qualms about looking through his emails and as she opened his account she skim read the titles. However, the titles were not what held her interest but rather who they were from. They were all from the same person, Julie Walters - Ethan's personal receptionist. A little smile tugged at Vyn. Ethan seemed to talk to this lady quite a lot and piecing this together with her new found knowledge of the season of valentine, she came to the conclusion that Julie and her guardian had to be in love.

She paused, then took it upon herself to write a little love note to the lady on Ethan's behalf - she was in a particularly good mood now and she was certain her withered guardian would appreciate her aid. The email read;

"dear Julie

i am in love with you
be my valentine
i can buy you chocolate

love Ethan"

She clicked send before shutting down the computer. After a while the email faded from her memory - it was only the next day when Ethan asked her about it that she confessed to the email, resulting in Ethan being slightly disgruntled at first (his secretary had sent him a baffling email declining his 'offer') before sighing and chuckling about her misunderstanding.. She just nodded quietly; a little miffed that he hadn't appreciated her rare turn of kindness. He normally jumped to praise her if she even so much as spoke.. From now on she'd give human festivities a miss if she could.

Getting his food didn't take long, the queue went swiftly and Ethan soon had a bag containing his order of pork trotters in vinegar swinging by his side as he and his raevan daughter returned home. The air was fresh and the late evening breeze ruffled Vyn's wine red hair. The meeting with Xiu and Hazeline had been quite refreshing for both Ethan and Vyn. He enjoyed the company of the polite young lad who had introduced him into the peculiar world of raevans, whilst Vyn had been reminded of an old friend as Xiu's intelligent and innocent nature echoed that of the green skinned boy she'd been so close to before her rehoming.

Intrigued to what his charge thought about the white boy, Ethan attempted a conversation despite probably being blotted out by the girl's music. "So, that was Xiu. He was the first raevan I ever saw." He stated, hoping that she might take interest in how he first got involved with the LAB, and thus how he came to be her guardian. Luckily for Ethan, the song Vyn was listening to had just reached it's quietest point; a murmured spectral whisper of Japanese before an impressive guitar solo, and she heard every word that he said - reluctantly she removed the headphones.. As much as she preferred to avoid discussion, it was rude to outright ignore someone.

"What did you think of him??" Ethan probed, hoping to find out how she'd reacted to the encounter.

She mused over what had occurred. She neither felt very gripped by Xiu, but neither did she have any dislike towards the boy. She told this to Ethan.. He sighed and tapped in the key-code for the apartment - the journey home had been short and sweet, just like the raevan's opinion on Xiu. Maybe after a bit more interaction she'd be able to form a view.. But it was rather frustrating to receive such an uninteresting reply.

"He did remind me of an old friend." She added, after noting his disappointed expression. She knew any mention of the word 'friend' would surely captivate his attention and she was not disappointed; Ethan cocked his head slightly and stared at her inquisitively. Last time he'd met an old friend of Vyn he'd very much approved - the strapping young Rivener had been able to produce a moderately animated conversation out of her. Who was this old friend??

"His name was Gage."

Ethan pressed her for further details however, Vyn did not elaborate on her lost friend ((stating she couldn't remember him too well, a white lie to avoid a monotonous explanation and slightly painful memories of the loss of contact with the boy who could've been considered her best friend being dredged up, she had enough to deal with at the moment)) and Ethan was left pondering for the rest of the night as he chewed on the trotters.. Perhaps if she met up again with Xiu some sort of friendship would spark between them?? It'd happened because, so there was a chance of it happening again he supposed..

Consciousness is like a flower with many petals.
(Seth)

MOOD: Confused.
MOOD: Determined.

The untouched piece of paper stared accusingly up off the table. The pen also sat beside it, like a piece of evidence in a murder case - telling the tale of Vyn's apparent confusion. The paper wasn't actually plain, there were some confusing numbers on it, with complex squiggles in between them. Primarily stunted 't's and little dashes... But even though Ethan watched her with an expectant gaze Vyn still stared blankly at the paper through her amber eyes, totally perplexed and not aware of what he was expecting her to do.

Ethan sighed and moved from the seat where he had been watching to the couch she was sitting, a peculiar shine in his eyes as he approached - like he was eager to accomplish some sort of challenge. It made the rose frei slightly nervous.

She frowned as he perched on the couch and slid away from him slightly, she was still not comfortable with being in close physical contact with anyone really, especially not him; his withered appearance still played on her nerves. Not bothered by her inching away Ethan picked up the pen and paper and pointed the nib at the first jumble of numbers and symbols. "This is maths." He stated, a serious expression on his face. "It's quite important that you understand the basics because it plays a big role in many everyday tasks." He continued, ringing the first number and clicking the pen confidently. "Do you know what this number is?"

Examining what he had circled Vyn's brows twitched into another minute frown as she recalled the name of the lumpy number.. "Three?" Her reply was muted, but Ethan seemed to hear it well enough and nodded, satisfied that she knew the correct number muttering something like 'good good, she knows basic numbers'. Vyn winced and played with a tendril of her chaotic ribbon as she awaited the next question. This thing called 'maths' had never been introduced to her before. Shuura had taught her the basics of reading and writing and Vyn could quite easily scribe out a small story in her spidery handwriting. (The task that had been presented to her before this 'maths'.)

The businessman pointed to the next two parts of the equation, one of the weird 't's and another 3. "And what about this bit? Do you know what this bit means?" Of course, the symbol was a mystery to Vyn and she floundered, mouth opening as she tried to formulate some logical response, but she could find none and slumped into defeat; shaking her head.

"This here," Ethan ringed the 't' shaped symbol, "means plus." The shadow girl made a quizzical expression, "Plus what?" Tapping the 3 Ethan smiled, "Three, so it reads three plus three." He drew three dots on the page, then a space, then another three dots. "These three, plus the other three equal six." he explain, receiving a slow yet assured nod from Vyn. "Hw about you try another one?" Hesitantly giving the pen back to the girl..

She nodded and proceeded to look again at the questions with a new understanding.. Perhaps this wouldn't be that hard. It was only maths.

"Ethan.. What does that mean?" A minus. He sighed.. She understood the numbers, but not the symbols.. The basics might be a little tedious but he was sure she'd pick them up. But he was certain that by the time they got to algebra they'd both be tearing their hair out. Although, this thought provoked a smile; just like any other parent and child..

Pale eyelid shielded black eyes as the frei slept; Vyn was curled into a ball in her seat, head pressed gently against the glass of the window. Quite frankly she was exhausted. Whether it be because of the peculiar occurrence earlier that had sapped energy out of her, or simply because she had been battered and beaten by a hoard of crazy moshers - it wasn't clear. But now she was certainly sleeping off the strains of the concert, whilst in the Delaran house Ethan explained to Aphismet about what had happened and why his raevan son might be under the threat of assault charges. She had been left in peace in the car.. However, her 'peace' wasn't quite a tranquil as it appeared. Her eyelids flickered slightly and her thin brows knitted into a petite frown, the only signs of the nightmare plaguing the girl.

People everywhere. Moving, lurching, crushing. A sea of flailing limbs and bodies, the tide rushing in and engulfing her. Undercurrents of anger. Sneering faces. Cat calls that stung at her like angry hornets. "Freaks!" The startling rifts of music. Leaping, jumping, crashing. Rivener punching the air in excitement. Punching people. Lurching backwards, getting punched in the face. Stinger. Flashing lights. Contorted shadows. Petrified eyes. Crazed glares. Yelling. Confined between people. A cage of living bodies. Snake-like vines whipping up, coiling around her. Shielding her? Confining her. Tightening, heart throbbing. Contracting around her chest. Chinks of light. Rivener's face, Ethan's face. Gaps closing, shrinking, gone. Alone. Trapped. Darkness.

Her face scrunched up, and her lips parted to allow a muted, "no," to escape.

She squirmed, black painted nails clawing across her chest, trying to pry at the shadowy bonds that were present in her dream. "Get off, go away. Stop." She groaned, clearly distressed as she emerged from her slumber. Not for the first time that evening dewy tears were beading in her black eyes. The coil of darkness across her chest, it was too tight, strangling her. Was it happening again? She panicked. She couldn't control it - just like at the concert. Only this time there was no Rivener to save her. No Ethan to use his knife edged tongue to defend her. Where were they?! Her rune flared in her panic and she lashed out with one arm - balled fist cracking against a cold hard surface. She was stuck again. Enclosed and unable to get out. A nightmare come real for the rambling rose and living shadow.

There was a click that made the raevan practically jump out of her skin. Then the lights of the car flicked on. She blinked rapidly, pupils contracting suddenly with the sudden change in brightness. "Ethan?" She mumbled, looking at the wrinkled face through the gleam of the car's glass window. Her racing heart slowed as she glanced around.. Yes, she was in the car. Ethan must've been dropping Rivener off. And the constricting bind across her chest? The seatbelt. She exhaled, she was safe.

Although..

In that moment when the locks had clicked open and she'd felt her heart jump she could've sworn that she'd seen a shadow coil in the foot well.

Every delicate rose has it's thorns...

Shuddering Vyn wrapped her arms around herself. She never would've thought that the prospect of going home to Ethan's flat would be so inviting... But at least there the shadows were familiar and didn't have a life of their own.
