“There are a lot of cars about,” said Xiu as he ‘sat’ in the passenger seat beside his guardian. Hazeline nodded. “It’s usually this way. Most of them are in a hurry to reach home or out searching for dinner,”

“Like us?” enquired Xiu as he watched a couple of pedestrians trying to cross a busy road.

“Yes,” replied Hazeline nodding. “It is unfortunate that Mrs. Bedievier isn’t feeling too well today and I am terrible at cooking,”

“I have seen you cook before Hazeline,” said Xiu as he eyed his guardian. “You were cooking over the stove,”

“Wha- you mean instant noodles? Oh Xiu, instant noodles do not count,” chuckled Hazeline. “Besides, they are unhealthy.”

“Why?”

“Because they generally contain lots of artificial flavouring and salt,” explained Hazeline as she eased the car into a parking slot. Turning off the engine, Hazeline opened her door. “Let’s go Xiu. The restaurant’s a little way away but we’ll have to leg it from here; preferably before the crowd comes,”

“Okay, Hazeline,” replied Xiu as he followed his guardian. After a moment of silent walking, Xiu turned to face Hazeline “Why are artificial flavouring and salt unhealthy?”

“Well, you see Xiu, in a human’s body, lots of things such as blood, fluid, cells and suchlike work together in a very controlled environment and when things such as salt and artificial flavourings are taken in excessively, the body might not be able to maintain its internal environment anymore and that’s when you get all sorts of problems,”

“That is interesting to know,” said Xiu. “But what kind of problems do you get?”

“Oh Xiu, you never do run out of questions do you?” laughed Hazeline. “Very well, let’s take high blood pressure for example…,”

And it was in that manner that Hazeline and Xiu made their way to Mr.Wang’s Chinese Cuisine; a rather established old eatery with lots of loyal customers.

Another evening of feeding, although this time Ethan and Vyn were out earlier than usual. Rather than their usual walk in the dark of night the pair were strolling down the street late evening. The shadows cast definitely seemed different to Ethan and he pondered whether they would taste different to the frei. He didn't ask though, he had long since learned that talking with Vyn should be avoided to prevent discomfort on both of their behalves. However, she may have been stating her hunger on these new shadows but his stomach was left pining for food - he had not eaten since lunch time, which had been a quick affair; just a sandwich and a cup of coffee before returning to work. Now with the scent of food on the evening breeze he began to salivate hungrily.

Vyn didn't notice the hunger of her guardian as she was indeed too busy tasting the evening's shadows. Her rune glowed brightly as she fed and pulsed gently to the beat of her music. Ethan had to clear his throat loudly and tap her gently on her shoulder to catch her attention she was so wrapped up in her own world. Taking her headphones out she pulled her coat closer around her - even though his touch had been brief she still didn't like it and gazed at him with eyes demanding an explanation.

"Vyn, if it isn't too much trouble can we pop into that take away?" He inquired, gesturing to the nearby Chinese take away - Mr. Wang's Chinese Cuisine. "I'm hungry... And unluckily I can't pluck my food out of shadows like you..." He smiled apologetically. He knew that the solitary frei wouldn't enjoy the atmosphere of the take away if it was busy but he couldn't prolong his appetite much longer without his stomach's groans becoming embarrassingly loud.

Sighing slightly Vyn nodded. She wished that she didn't have to stop her feeding - these type of shadows were a new experience to her, but neither was it fair to deny her guardian his food.

And so the pair crossed the road to the restaurant, unaware of the other guardian and raevan who shared the same destination.

“Yes, ummm…three duck noodles please,” Hazeline ordered when her turn came. “Two with bean sprouts and one without. Take away and oh, a dozen fried wantan please,”

“You still not yet learn Chinese ah?” asked Mr. Wang good humouredly as he dipped a handful of noodles into boiling hot soup stock.

“Afraid not,” smiled Hazeline. “Too old for one thing,”

“Aiyah, you cannot talk like that. Where got you old? Sure can learn if you try,” said Mr. Wang as he tossed the noodles with some dark soy sauce and a few other ingredients. “My father ah, cannot talk English at all but he learn. Now my son, wah! Speak English very good already,”

“I am sure he does,” replied Hazeline with a laugh “But I guess languages aren’t my thing,”

“You ah, remind me of that saying…about horse not drinking water when brought to the river,” said Mr. Wang as he handed over the ordered food and received money in return. “Take care of yourself Hazeline,”

“I will Mr.Wang and thank you,” said Hazeline as she made her way out of the busy shop and towards the waiting Xiu. “Sorry for the wait. The crowd’s already there,”

“No worries, Hazeline,” said Xiu giving his guardian a soft smile. “It is a pleasant night to be out,”

“Yeah but it won’t be so pleasant if we are late,” replied Hazeline as she entered into a brisk walk. “Let’s get home as soon as possible Xiu,”

“Hazeline, I believe that that is…Mr.Ethan,” said Xiu pointing towards a man making his way towards Mr.Wang’s Chinese Cuisine. “And he has a raevan with him!”

“Mr.Ethan?” Hazeline enquired and she followed Xiu’s gaze. “You have told me about him before haven’t you?”

Yes, but circumstances prevented the two of you from actually meeting one another,” said Xiu. “ Shall we?”

“I suppose it’s alright; just not too long,” replied Hazeline giving her a raevan a nod.

“Thank you Hazeline,” said Xiu as he floated towards the duo. “Mr. Ethan!” Xiu called out.

"Mr Ethan!"

Ethan cocked his head to the call, who was shouting his name? He frowned as he spotted someone walking towards them. No. They weren't walking, they were drifting. A raevan? His frown turned into a smile as he recognised the familiar white oriental figure. Xiu, the first frei that Ethan had met. He supposed this charming lad had been what had started the ball rolling, if it had not been for that chance meeting at the supermarket Ethan probably wouldn't have had continued interest in the wondrous beings and wouldn't have spotted Zul around Christmas and then he wouldn't have met Alex and as a result of that wouldn't have applied for the adoption of Vyn.

Perhaps he should express his thanks to the boy? But no.. That would seem a little bizarre to the frei as the last time they'd met he'd hardly gotten a grasp on the English language..

"Xiu, hello there. What're you doing out on the pleasant evening?" He smiled happily at the boy before guesturing towards Vyn who as per the norm was hanging behind him, averting her eyes from the new person. "This is Vyn. A raevan like you.."

Vyn watched the meeting unfold through her amber eyes. The boy that recognised Ethan was odd to her eyes. She'd not seen him before and unlike Rivener he seemed to be the total opposite to her - pale skin and white hair and clothing he radiated light from his blue rune. She wasn't too keen on him from first impressions due to this contrast but on closer inspection she was quite interested in the oriental style of his clothing and wings. As Ethan introduced her she nodded her head slightly in greeting before returning to examining the intricate stone patterning on his wings.

Xiu stopped before the elderly man and smiled before giving a polite nod in Vyn’s direction. “We- Hazeline and I, were out getting some dinner for the family,” said Xiu as he indicated to the approaching figure of Hazeline before giving a soft and slightly sheepish sounding laugh. “I guess I should have waited for her…,”

“You should have,” said Hazeline as she finally approached the group. “Unlike you Xiu, I am not exempted from the laws of gravity.” Seeing Ethan and Vyn, Hazeline then smiled and with some degree of awkwardness transferred the packets of noodle her right hand to her left before holding it out to Ethan in greeting. “Good to finally meet you Mr. Ethan. Xiu has mentioned about you a couple of times” Hazeline would have offered her hand to Vyn as well but Xiu seemed to have caught Vyn’s attention and Vyn herself seems to have caught the white haired raevan’s attention. “I guess Raevans will always be attracted to one another,” said Hazeline.

Xiu meanwhile was looking at Vyn with interest. She was probably as different from Xiu as any raevan was going to get. Tilting his head slightly, Xiu smiled and flared his wings a little. “Ummm…yes, my wings probably stand out a little don’t they? But…you have lovely wings yourself and errr…interesting eyes,” Xiu wouldn’t go so far as to say that he wished he had eyes such as hers but it was true that they were interesting. He had not any raevan with black scleras before.

Ethan chuckled slightly, evidently the boy's linguistic skills had come forward with leaps and bounds, when they'd first met he'd hardly uttered a word and at their second meeting the encounter had been brief.. But now Xui seemed to be as articulate as any regular human child that Ethan had seen and equally as eager to socialise too, judging by the fact he'd raced ahead of his guardian to speak with him. In fact the businessman felt a little pang of jealously towards the woman who caught up to her white-oriental raevan. Her charge seemed easy enough to handle - he was polite and chatty. The total social opposite to his quiet and somewhat moody Vyn. In response to his reason for being out Ethan waved a hand at the take away; "A meal, from Mr. Wang's I assume?" This observation was made complete as Ethan noted the food containers in the woman's hand as she arrived.

The woman who was holding the meal and standing beside Xiu, presumably the 'Hazeline' that Xiu had mentioned, seemed pleasant enough and Ethan took her hand when it was offered, shaking firmly. "Xiu has spoken about me?" Ethan was pleasantly surprised, "I cannot say I recall him mentioning you.. But then again, when we met he was rather short of words." The older man beamed. "Though I must congratulate you as he seems to have made astounding progress.. Some of it must be natural talent I am sure.."

He raised a brow at the comment on raevan's being drawn together. Certainly there had been a string of chance encounters on his behalf that'd thrown him into the process of becoming a guardian and the lucky streak did seem to be continuing as Vyn and him had bumped into two other raevan and owners.. "Mmm, they do seem to go to each other like moths to a lamp.. I am sure Vyn and I have many encounters still to come.." He mused, before turning his attention back towards Hazeline, striking up a friendly conversation - drawing on business skills to create small talk out of the situation.

"We were also heading to Mr. Wangs. Not for Vyn obviously, she finds all her nutrition in the shadows.. I can see you've just been there. I'm no familiar face there... So I don't suppose you could perhaps suggest something especially good?"

Surprised by the raevan's comment, Vyn couldn't help but gawp slightly and stare at him as he flared his wings. His response made it clear that he didn't seem to mind her looking but she was embarrassed none the less at his comment about her eyes. Yes, it'd been intended to be nice but she wasn't keen on people looking at her - another reason why she ventured out almost exclusively in the night. However, it seemed only fair for him to examine her when she'd been doing precisely the same thing.

"We are the same in the fact we both are different.." She replied quietly. A tiny flare of amusement rose in her that twitched her stubbon lips into a tiny smirk. They contrasted in almost all aspects, but there was a few tiny similarities - they were kin; both raevans..

“Well, Xiu is a rather bright student,” admitted Hazeline with a little hint of pride in her voice. “He learns fast and he does not mind being corrected; it has been a treat to educate him but that is a little beside the point I guess. If left unchecked, I could probably go on and on about Xiu,” said Hazeline letting out a chuckle “However, in regards to what is good at Mr. Wang’s, most people are rather partial to the fishball soup while some find the stewed pork trotters in dark vinegar a treat but if you are looking for something more manageable while walking, perhaps some fried dumplings or a meat bun?” suggested Hazeline. “Those are pretty popular too,”

We are the same…in the fact we both are different?” said Xiu with some puzzlement. “Same…in the fact….different… Oh! I get it! Same…as in, we are both raevans aren’t we? And umm..different…I guess we are pretty different,” said Xiu letting out a soft laugh. “Would that be the meaning behind that riddle like sentence Vyn?”

Nodding slowly Ethan thought over how intelligent Vyn was.. It was unknown to him just how far her vocabulary stretched, he had not heard her using particularly elaborate words - but unlike when Xiu had an obviously stunted vocabulary because it was obvious he didn't know the words (due to his young age), Vyn could very well have a large variety of words on the tip of her tongue but the lack of conversations meant she didn't regularly utilise her knowledge. She seemed to be doing quite well at reading the Teach Yourself Japanese book - already her book mark was about a tenth of the way into it... But if she wasn't firm with the basics of English how could she learn a whole new language in a predominantly English speaking environment? "Mmm, I haven't started with Vyn's proper education yet.." He replied, eyes flicking to the two raevans who appeared to be striking up a conversation, "I've been allowing her to settle in first."

As for the food suggestion Ethan thought it over. He was not a connoisseur of Chinese Cuisine, but being a businessman he'd been to a couple of meetings which had been coupled with an expensive Chinese meal afterwards and luckily he could recall that he'd tried stewed pork trotters before and had found them a delight - although Hazeline had a point; they would not be easy to eat on the move. "Pork trotters in vinegar.. Exactly what I need." He shrugged slightly at the dilemma of actually eating them. He and Vyn could always head home after buying them, and a portion of prawn crackers could off put his hunger for the mean time - he was sure the meal would retain it's heat till they got home.

The white raevan seemed to be amazed that he had unravelled the meaning behind Vyn's words and the rose frei's brows twitched into a little frown.. What she'd said hadn't been that cryptic, had it? But then a phrase twigged in her head, causing a minute smile. "Yes, that's correct." Simple minds, simple pleasures. It seemed to apply to the other frei. She did not think him stupid, but he did seem young - but once the world had been a marvellous and new experience to her too, although she had a hard time recalling those memories as they were too shrouded in the shadowy cobwebs of Shuura to remember comfortably...

Dredging up memories was a double edge sword, easily bringing sorrow as well as contentment, and it seemed as though Vyn had been stung somewhat by recalling her past as a tiny frown of displeasure crossed her face. However, she quickly straightened herself out returning to her stare, devoid of any hints to troubles that might've be churning beneath.

Hazeline smiled “They are a favourite of mine but I try not to overindulge. Heaven knows that I have not been working out all that often,” said Hazeline shaking her head. “And settle in? I guess Vyn must be new then; Xiu hasn’t met her before and I take it that when he last saw you, Mr. Ethan, you were without a raevan or Xiu would be sure to mention it, right Xiu?”

“Yes, Hazeline,” replied Xiu chuckling softly. “I seem to tell you everything don’t I?”

“Yes, but that is a good thing,” said Hazeline. “It shows that I need not worry about you falling into bad company,”

“Can’t even if I wanted to,’ said Xiu with good humour before shrugging and leaving the two guardians to talk amongst themselves. Turning his attention once again to Vyn, Xiu regarded her curiously. He was sure that for the briefest of moment…an unfathomable expression had crossed Vyn’s face; something that was probably beyond his understanding no doubt but that made him all the more curious. Tilting his head slightly and floating over so that Ethan and Hazeline wouldn’t be able to overhear, Xiu asked softly “Did…something happen or are you…truly younger than I am? Logic and…general assumption would lead to that but…there is something about you that is…different,”

Floating back a little so that he would not arouse Ethan’s and Hazeline’s attention, Xiu then let out a soft laugh. “Of course…I could be mistaken; being new to this and all…,”

Admittedly the older man was a little bit envious of the close knit relationship that the guardian and frei appeared to have. He would never dream of Vyn updating him like Xiu seemed to do to Hazeline... However, he could hope that someday their relationship would sneak closer to that of the pair in front of him, some improvements could already be seen in Vyn. Occasionally she'd ask for something or other; a new music track or something of the like. With more time and effort he'd make some sort of breakthrough - and to share something special like the glow of the happy relationship in front of him he'd quite willingly invest all his energy into it. Hazeline seemed as pleasant as her charge and Ethan politely corrected her mistake on Vyn's age. "Vyn is quite an old raevan actually. Three years of age.." He explained, "you most liekly haven't seen her because I believe she was taken away and was being held at the lab around the time that Xiu was born."

Allowing her guardian to explain Vyn nodded, confirming to Xiu that what Ethan had said was the truth. "You're... clever. She murmured, setting the boy's worries of wrongly assuming aside. She did not wish to oppress the boy's youthful nature with the constant trouble of being put down or corrected. Gage, an old friend, had always been hesitant despite his impressive intellect - flowers should be watered not pruned in the shadow frei's opinion. Shuura might well have been slightly neglectful but at least she did not have the shaming tongue of Julien that had resulted in her burning friend's quiet nature.

"You are young." She attempted a smile, warming to the conversation at the memory of her green skinned companion - something about the boy's innocent nature seemed to further remind her of the radioactive unicorn. "How are you enjoying the world?" Perhaps it was a little bit of a deep topic for light conversation amongst humans, but to the fairly new life it seemed fairly normal.

“Oh my…,” said Hazeline as she cast a sideway look at Vyn. She could not help it. Hazeline had never thought that…that raevans could be rehomed but well…if one thought about it, why shouldn’t it be possible? Children could be rehomed if their parents weren’t right for them and a raevan is no different from a child, right?

“I’m sorry…,” murmured Hazeline as her eyes flickered from Vyn, to Ethan and finally settling on Xiu. The white raevan seemed silent as well, as though contemplating this latest bit of news in his own way.

Realizing that his guardian was looking at him, Xiu turned from Vyn to his guardian and gave her a reassuring smile. The piece of news did give him quite a start but it did confirm his suspicion and was definitely worth thinking over…

Having reassured his guardian, Xiu gave a soft laugh before answering Vyn’s question. “The world is…I don’t know…interesting? Fun? Confusing? Exciting? There are really too many factors involve but for now…for now I am enjoying it, I truly am,” said Xiu with a soft but genuine smile. “I would not…have it any other way…,”

Hearing her raevan’s reply was truly heart warming but just as Hazeline was about to speak up, her phone rang. Picking it up, Hazeline smiled. “Guess the folks back home are beginning to worry,” said the young woman as the ringing changed into a missed call.

“Perhaps we should meet when time is not a factor, Mr. Ethan and I would appreciate it if I could get your number,”

An even more heart-warming confession was made by Xiu as Vyn inquired to how he was enjoying the world so far. Ethan smiled fondly again, Xiu was such a charming young lad. He half hoped that if they met again somehow, Vyn would spark up even more conversation - he'd make a good friend for the quiet rose.. Not loud and intrusive, but considerate and intelligent. The businessman respected those qualities in a person; it was a pleasant release from the confident and sometimes rather obnoxious business people that he had to work with. Plus the noble yet modest attitude that the frei had been graced with was a relief too, the man really gave Hazeline credit for bringing him up so well so far.

"That's good.." Vyn responded, glad that the boy was enjoying himself.. His guardian certainly didn't seem to be anything like the clipped scientist her green skinnmed companion had and she doubted that the boy would have any problems with Hazeline.

"Oh, well, I won't keep you any longer." Ethan laughed cheerfully in response to the woman's ringing phone. He slipped his hand into the pocket of his coat at the mention of exchanging numbers and retrieved a business card with his details on it. A good businessman is always prepared, he thought to himself. "Feel free to give me a call any time. My phone is on almost all the time. He reassured, pressing the card into her hand. "I'll go get myself some dinner now." He stated, turning on his heel, before smiling back at the pair.. "I'm sure those pork trotters will be lovely."
