Out with the Old and In with the New (Ellie Spectre) Had a year really already gone by? It seemed like just a month ago she had written out New Year's Resolutions and sat around the Dining room table, sharing them with her parents. Yet here it was, January 1, 2011.
She set her head against the table, looking bored as could be as she waited for both her Mom, then her Dad to come down the stairs with their lists. It would have looked like the blonde girl was absolutely lethargic, if it weren't for her feet shaking about the ankles in an effort to just get some of her extra energy out.
"It's 'bout time, guys!" the teen almost seemed to scold her parents as they pulled up their chairs and sat down.
"Ellie, you don't need to be so impatient! You'll have plenty of time to do whatever it is you want to do today!" Mom seemed to glare at the teen as she scolded before scooting her chair in.
Her dad smiled toothily and then patted his wife's arm. "Both of you, cool your jets! Let's not start the New Year off like that!" The woman sighed at his touch, but the teen didn't even seem to budge her head from where it was laying. The man leaned forward and simply flicked his finger against the teen's skull. "Come on, you know who goes first every year!"
The tomboy rolled her eyes and mentioned "Do ya think that even hurt... seriously, that was weak!"
"It wasn't supposed to hurt, kiddo!"
The girl picked up her paper that had been underneath her head, turned it so she could read it, then began:
"My New Year's Resolutions. First and foremost, I plan to try harder in everything I do. I know I started of my list like this last year, but I find it really important. Everyone needs a reminder to do things at 100% every now and again. Secondly, I will try to be safer. I am sorry that I messed up so badly with my motorcycle. I could have done so much to prevent any of that from happening, but I didn't take the necessary precautions. I plan to do better with that this coming year. Last, I plan to get a job this year. Right after my birthday I will join the work force and start to pull some of my own weight here. I appreciate everything you have done for me all these years, whether it has been funding my hobbies, or simply just dealing with giving me money for extra food. It is my turn to be responsible."
The man nodded and the woman simply lifted her glasses up to her face and positioned them just perfectly on her nose. She followed with her own New Year's Resolutions, which honestly hadn't been much different from the year before either. Cleaning up the house, learning to cook, diet, spend less time at work. All of the usual things. Since there was less trouble towards the end of this year, Mom didn't really need to un-ground a certain Ellie this time around.
Dad's list was practically identical to the previous year too. He hadn't managed to keep up any of his resolutions from the previous year. He had spent more time at work without becoming the top salesman this past year, and he didn't even use his vacation days like he said he would. And that man never even bothered to help out around the house. Some things never changed, and in all honesty, neither of her parents had changed much.
It was vaguely comforting for Ellie. Even if her life had been turned upside down thanks to Kurma and ********* and all the other Sailor Scouts and Negaverse idiots out there, her parents would still be the same people they had always been. As the blonde excused herself from the little gathering and made her way to the garage, she felt a smile lifting the corners of her lips.
Maybe, just maybe, this would be a good year.
Maybe.
