Caleb had learned fast that if he'd wanted to be adopted, he was going to have to work hard whenever a prospective parent arrived. The first several months of his orphanage life, Caleb had thought that he was too good to have to be adopted. He'd been living just fine on the streets. That was, until he was caught and dragged along to this orphanage. The boy hated this dismal place. For one thing, the tall fencing and locked gates meant that he had little room to roam about. And the other kids were pathetic. Always talking about how nice it would be to have a mommy and a daddy. Or even just one of them.
The kid had scorned his fellow orphans. He was smarter than all of them, for he knew how to live out on the streets. He knew what it took to survive and that sometimes you just had to go to sleep with your stomach growling because you failed to find your own dinner. Caleb thought the other orphans pampered and unaware of what life was really like outside of this dreary place.
But, after several months of seeing other kids leaving with their new parents, Caleb's attitude was forced to change some. He figured that if he could get some sap to come and adopt him, he could then run away and join his old friends on the streets again. He didn't need the pampered life of a child. So the boy had started observing how the other kids interacted with the adults that came to the orphanage. He learned that it was often the youngest children that were taken away to live with the adults. Very few children Caleb's age ever left. And the few that did were always the quieter, calmer kids. And usually they were girls.
So the odds were against him. Caleb knew he couldn't just escape from the orphanage. He'd spent the first two months here trying just that every night. The fact that he was still here just went to show how well the security operated. So that meant he'd just have to put on an act. Maybe, if he acted like he was one of the quieter kids, he'd have a better chance at being adopted which meant a better chance of getting out of here and back to his home; the streets. Because it had to be easier to escape from some fancy house than from this prison.
The boy's first attempts were complete failures. A few of the prospects left without adopting anyone, but the rest had found one of the babies to be adorable and irresistible. Caleb had scowled as he watched them leave, little bundle of so-called joy in their arms. He'd had to fight hard to resist the urge to puke at the sight. This was going to be harder than he'd thought. Just being quiet wasn't working. Never mind the fact that none of the other kids his age were getting picked, he was the only one that mattered.
And so, when word got around of another potential parent walking through the gates of the orphanage, Caleb joined the crowd of kids rushing outside to see the man. He slowed down as the group of kids came to a halt a respectable distance away from the strange man. The older kids were starting to push their way to the front, more desperate than the younger children to be adopted.
Caleb took a deep breath and pushed his way forward and out of the crowd. The adults in charge of the orphanage frowned upon (and often scolded children for) approaching the visitors. But Caleb was feeling cooped up and hated it.
And so, the young boy walked up to Loremaster Catspaw, growing more nervous with each step that he took. The man had a cat-like creature with him, which meant that the man preferred cats. So Caleb's hope was already falling, what with his canine features. His tail drooped as he grew closer to the man. Taking a deep breath, Caleb gathered his courage. "Hello, sir."
Caleb held his breath in that long moment before the stranger replied. The boy exhaled with relief as the man seemed interested in him. Maybe this was his ticket out of here! He tried to keep his excitement to a low, afraid that his tail would give him away. Sometimes he cursed having that thing. While it was cool and all, it reflected his emotions all too well.
The next few moments were a blur to the boy and the next thing he knew, he was walking out of the gate with the man and cat and getting into the car with them. He'd done it! Escape was finally within his grasp. All he had to do now was wait until he arrived at this man's home and then run away as soon as it got dark. Easy enough, right?
Wrong! Caleb's jaw dropped as the car pulled up to Faction S. This place was huge! The boy could tell right off the bat that this wasn't a house. It was something different, he could tell. Though as for what it was, the boy had no clue. Caleb glanced over at Catspaw, rather frightened now. There was no way he'd be able to escape from this. The boy almost groaned. He’d gone from one prison to another. Now he'd never make it back to the streets.

 Riordan: This is who adopted Reese, who nicknamed him 'Da. He also was the one who called Faction S back when he was looking at adoption centers and thus led them (and Goldfur) to him and Kaden.
 Kaden: Riordan's partner. When he returns home and finds Reese, he and Riordan decide to have the boy call him 'Uncle'. Now with another boy in the house, they decide to keep the same nickname.
 Reese: The adopted son of Riordan (and by thus, also Kaden), this is now Caleb's brother. Reese is mentally challenged, so it'll be interesting to see their relationship.
