Diedre and Shenja were born in Benden hold. Their mother was a holder married to a travelling trader. They rarely saw their father, but he would bring back tales of travel that facinated Shenja and tales of trade that facinated Diedre.
When Diedre was 13 (and Shenja was 9), their mother decided to talk to their father about him taking them with him. For one thing, Diedre was showing an aptitude for math and bartering skills, as well as a good head on her shoulders even at the tender age of 13. Her mother felt that she would make a good trader like her father.
Also, she had fallen on hard times and was finding it difficult to take care of two children, one of whom was incredibly adventurous and energetic. Since the two were inseparable- Shenja always pestering Diedre and Diedre constantly keeping Shenja in line- she figured that if she could convince their father to take them with him she might be able to have enough time and energy to get to a better place in her life.
Being both persuasive and offering liberal sex, she managed to get their father to agree. He was looking for new traders anyway.
So, one day without much more than a pack-your-bags, Diedre and Shenja left Benden with their father and joined the Caravan.
Shenja, being a charming, energetic, and helpful boy (at times) became well liked by the others. In particular, his natural flexibility made him popular at rest time as entertainment, and when selling wares, he proved himself useful as an attractor both with his acrobatics and his very good barking voice. Being clever, he often helped the caravan's 'fixer' – the clever and fast-talking guy who manipulated things to keep the caravan out of trouble. It was speculated that Shenja was his apprentice, but since 'fixer' is not a real craft and both parties were slippery as hell, it was hard to tell. He was also an annoyance to many, a prankster who got into more trouble than he was worth sometimes... but many traders have a good sense of humor so he did okay.
Their father, seeing Diedre's aptitude, began tutoring her further in math, bartering... Tradecraft. She started taking on accounting duties for him, managing his trades and reporting to the caravan leader.
This left him more time to... well...
Their father was actually a bit of a womanizer, and in their travels, they met a few half-siblings. The two they know of and keep contact with while in the area are Brennac, a Journeyman Smithcrafter at Telgar and Menndan, a very young boy (younger than Shenja) living at Trine dolfincrafthall (met after the route shift).
(possible future characters) Since they didn't stay in the same place for long periods of time, they dont know their half siblings very well.
But they know enough to be somewhat angry at their father. (Not too angry, though. Their mother DID toss them out.)
Thread's return proved troublesome for trading caravans, but being part of a larger trading company gave them some advantages in terms of warnings and resources. They also changed their habits, travelling quickly on the road and spending more time in holds. The trading company had just moved their caravan and their route to the Southern contident to reinforce it's trade routes down there when the revolution hit. They were picking up supplies by boat at Ista Weyr when they heard the news. The caravan was, for the most part, stunned by the whole affair. How could such a horrific thing happen? There was little they could do but continue their route.
They traded at the feast at Trine where the eggs were stolen, and returned to complete another trade cycle, hoping to ply their wares after the storm (when they were needed) and be back in time for the Feast after the hatching.
(Kappa Clutch, Shenja:14, Diedre:1cool It was of dubious fortune that Shenja and Diedre were Searched to Trine Weyr. Diedre, being a dutiful Pernesecitizen took to it with dignity, but Shenja was fairly blaise about it. He was there to keep Diedre company. Both were sad to see their caravan leave, though they knew it would return. They touched the eggs, both somewhat taken aback by the minds within, and generally let themselves integrate into Candidate life in the weyr. The hatching changed things forever, and not very far into it either. The second green to impress, Kalteth went to a very surprised and delighted Shenja.
Diedre did not take it so well. Seeing his impression to a Green as a sign of a lack of manliness on her brother's part (and a lack of ability on her part) she ended up having a fight with her brother. She left with the family after the feast, and the siblings did not part on the best of terms, something Shenja - then Sh'en - hoped could be fixed.
Sh'en and Kalteth grew up well, enjoying their new life together, and Sh'en found himself allied with one of the wingleaders, Kleos of Crimson Moriath. He grew up, Kalteth grew up, they did their drills, and life was good.
Diedre continued as a trader, moving around with her troop and feeling the absence of her little brother like a thorn in her side. She, too, grew into her own and, for two turns, she began to take on more and more functions of being a trader.
One day, though, her thoughts turned back to her brother, as her caravan made its way back to Trine Weyr...
Diedre is always concerned with her appearance. She likes to... look... responsible and reasonable. Her clothes, even on the road and dirty, are kept in reasonable condition.
She is well, if severely, formed. Not a beauty by most standards, but a-standardly beautiful, with an edge to her like a statue or a blade.
Her eyes are a stern grey, and her carefully tied up hair is a dirty blond. She has a very severe look to her, a maternal air. Shes the sort of person that many would instinctively not mess with, just on looks.
Personality:
Didi is a straight-backed, no nonsense young lady. She has always thought and acted like an adult, and radiates a sort of aura of experience that makes people look twice before dismissing her because of her still-tender age.
She has definite temper. It's a gradual escalation, not a sudden snap, but it results in loud scolding and shouting all the same. It sticks around, too: even after she's calmed down, she is usually prickly and sulky and annoyed and maybe a little snappish.
She will also, however, move on. Holding grudges is not in her nature, and if she is holding a grudge, it was built up over many episodes of frustration like sedimentary rock.
Diedre is industrious and will perform any job she is able to perform that needs someone to do it. She isn't afraid to get her hands dirty, and she doesn't shy away from any work. She prefers to manage, however, and has grown into such a role over time. She hopes to one day end up running things, in fact, she thinks she should be running things already. Finding herself distinctly not in charge is frustrating to her.
As a trader, she knows how to negotiate and deal like the rest of them, but her strengths lie not with outside customers but with the internal workings of the caravan and she knows it. Since Sh'en Impressed, she has had to become more of a people person to compensate for his absence and has grown cannier and more able at her duties as a result.
What she has not become is free-thinking. Diedre is very rigid and hidebound, believing in values usually found in the most ensconced holder, and not in a Trader. For example, she believes that homosexuality is a disease and can be cured, and actively holds out hope that her brother is manly and not as effeminite as his dragon would imply. Also, she believes that sex before marriage is bad, and that marriage should be between arranged partners. Basically, her views are not liberal at all. Living among traders and being a trader, Diedre has learned to keep her mouth shut about her views, but they are definitely there, and she is very obviously disapproving of things that don't agree with them.
She is very dissapproving of a lot of things, which makes her relate well with her 'cousin' Ulir and others like him.
Other:
On Dragons and color: After her brother Impressed and she did not, Diedre felt doubly cheated. She should have impressed, not him, and he should have impressed a more 'manlier' color and brought real prestige to them both. Over the years that the siblings have been separated, her attitude towards this has softened because she does love her baby brother and misses him and worries for him. If she stands again, though, she's got her eye on the shining egg and on the status it would give her.
On the Future: Diedre desires control and power. She is starting to have that as a trader, but she wants more. A being of the present, with a foot in the past, she feels the future is too uncertain for her. She makes plans that will hold in that uncertain future and keep people in the black. She does not, however, make plots that sprawl out over large spans of time. Shenja plots. She stays in the practicality of reality.
On Fears: Oh Diedre has her fears. She is very close to Shenja. Despite how annoying he is, he is her baby brother. He's always been there. She may not show it, but she loves him dearly. He knows this. She knows this. She's afraid that, in his mischeif, he will go too far. He'll miscalculate. He'll fall. He'll piss off the wrong person. He'll end up in the wrong place during Threadfall. She doesn't want to think about what would happen if he died.
Name: Sh'en Age: 16 Gender: Male Sexual Orientation: Homosexual Craft/Rank: Wingrider Entertainer of Dauntless Wing Description: Shenja's face is round and impish, only just starting to show the edges of adulthood. His eyes are a large and sparkling grey, and his hair is – as it has been since the apparent time immemorial – short, perpetually messy, pale, and blonde.
Despite some growth spurts, Sh'en is on the short side of average, with an athelete's body, all knots and no bulk. He tries to keep his clothing of a loose, mobile, and simple variety, but, being a rider now, sometimes he has to dress up.
His normal expression is a mischievous smile, except when he is serious. Then you know something is wrong.
Personality:
Sh'en is an impish and charming young man with a powerful desire for attention and a keen eye for things others may miss. He is a show off and takes great pride in his skills as an acrobat, and likes to ply others with those skills whenever possible, to the delight of his dragon and – sometimes – the annoyance of others.
Outwardly carefree and energetic, he does not appear to fully comprehend danger or horror. This innocence hides a clever and calculating mind who understands far more than he appears to, and is manipulating more than he ought.
Sh'en is very nosy, poking his nose into places it doesn't belong and eavesdropping if given the opportunity.. This has led to trouble (that he has attempted to charm his way out of) and to some very interesting opportunities for adventure and excitement. He finds this fun because he never knows what he might hear.
Shenja is also highly social. No fear of strangers at all. Sometimes, he spends some time doing something else, like chores or some other unobtrusive menial task near a person he wants to approach, observing them from afar. Sometimes, though, he will walk right up to a person and speak with them, trying to draw them out with sheer brashness.
Of course, this lack of fear can be problematic when he screws up and approaches someone he shouldn't have, or approaches them the wrong way. He usually will try to talk/weasel his way out of trouble should it arise, using the trader art of fast-talking and the entertainer art of lying. Or, if the situation demands it, fleeing.
Whenever he has a chance to show off his acrobatic abilities, even when he is in danger, he will. He knows he is dextrous and nimble and can do some amazing things with his body, and he's proud of it.
He works hard to keep himself in shape. Even if nobody is around, he gets fancy with his moves... he just enjoys the feel of the complexity, the pride and knowledge of how good he is. Of course, showing off on an unplotted course, especially in a situation where he is running from something, can be problematic. Things happen, objects aren't where they are supposed to be, or he trips up. Things like that.
He is not normally a gullible kid, but he has a noble streak that dictates that when someone he sympathizes with tells him something, he feels almost compelled to trust it.
Sh'en is a dragonrider now, and though he never dreamed that he would be one, he doesn't know what life would be like without his Kalteth. Other than that, he's neutral towards the concept of dragons and riders and colors and all that baloney. Thats all it is to him – a lot of nonsense in a world full of nonsense.
On hopes and dreams and... Stuff:
Sh'en as a dragonrider, hopes that he can stay as cheerful and happy as he was as a candidate. He also hopes to get lots of gossip.
Generally, he wants to live a good life, and has no further ambitions up the social ladder beyond that.
Fears:
Sh'en fears the darkness that lurks in mens hearts, the monsters inside every person. He fears death and harm done to his family and friends, and his own failure to protect them.
Name: Kalteth Size: Average Build: Below Average Personality: Kalteth is a green who is comfortable in her own skin. She doesn't clamor for attention or demand a higher status than tradition is willing to give her, but is instead comfortable and confident in her role as a quick and agile defender of Pern. There is no room for envy in this dragon's heart, whether it be envy of rank or of the ability to clutch. She is Kalteth, she is green, and those are both awesome things to be! Why would she ever want to be anything other than what she was shelled to be? She has a difficult time understanding why some greens (or blues, or blacks, or anyone else) would resent their lot in life, and will not hesitate to discuss this with them in an effort not only to understand, but to convince them that there's nothing to be jealous of or complain about. As far as she's concerned, it is easy being green, and she loves it!
Kalteth was born to fly. She is at home in the air – it is her element: after all, why else would she have wings? From the moment her wings were large enough, she has been airborne, sometimes for too long for her health. Still her rider manages to get her to land when she should, and she has grown up with powerful wings. For her, flying is her delight and passion: from turning acrobatic tricks to racing full-speed ahead to fighting Thread - it doesn't matter what she's doing, as long as she's on the wing she is happy.
Fortunately for her passion, Kalteth can stay in the air a bit longer than one might expect for a lightly-built green, thanks to her sheer joyful energy. She sincerely loves what she's doing, and will draw out every last moment of exhiliration that she can before exhaustion (or Sh'en or a dragon convincing enough) can bring her back to solid ground.
As enthusiastic as she is with flying, Kalteth is equally so with everything else she enjoys, and she enjoys many things. Flying may be her first love, but she also thrives on social interaction. After all, what good is having fun if you don't have someone to have fun with? Preferably a lot of someones!
Happy and guileless, Kalteth has a way with both people and dragons (and anything else susceptible to the charms of innocence and pure, enthusiastic cuteness), and makes friends with ease. She has no concept of self-consciousness, and will speak to anyone about anything regardless of rank or hide color. If she has something to say or a question to ask, she won't hesitate, though she never says anything with intent to offend or hurt. She is relaxed and perpetually pleasant (though not polite), even in situations where others might become frustrated, and is unfailingly optimistic about her, the world, and life in general.
She has a persistent cheerfulness that may grate on the nerves of some. It's as though she doesn't know how to be sad, or even just ambivalent. There's always a reason to be happy, you just have to find it! She can help, if you want!
In addition to possessing a boundless energy, she is highly inquisitive as well, and always very conscious of her surroundings. Nothing in her vicinity escapes her notice, which, unfortunately, is not always a good thing: Kalteth is very easily startled by unexpected noises, sudden movements, and the like. They don't frighten her exactly but they do result in a momentary shock that completely disrupts what she was doing, and once her focus is broken, getting it back proves to be very tricky.
If she gets distracted in the middle of one of her races (or her own Flights!), well, that's that - she probably won't recover quickly enough to make a comeback. It's good, then, that she approaches all competitions as friendly ones; sure, she loves to win as much as the next dragon, but she is as gracious in defeat as she is in victory. As long as she's having fun, it's all good with Kalteth.
Inspired by the Swedish Hare!
The Swedish Hare and the Elfin Rabbit were developed simultaneously in Sweden and the United States, specifically for outstanding performance at sporting events for rabbits. Rabbit hopping and Rabbit Agility have become popular and a more competitive animal was desired. In Europe and the United States, breeders began to organize and working standards were in development by 2008. In 2011, the Elfin rabbits in the United States officially became Swedish Hares.
In Sweden, the landrace breed called the Gotland Rabbit, although rare, was admired for its good temperament and strong bodies. The Gotland rabbit also comes in all colors with many individuals possessing an athletic arched body type. With these qualities in mind to develop the Swedish Hare, good jumpers were bred to the European Polish, the Belgian Hare and other breeds that were good jumpers and easy to handle.
In the United States several breeds were used in developing the Elfin Rabbit. All breeds were considered, using an outgoing temperament and an arched, athletic body type as a guide to individual selection. Large, arched American Rhinelanders were bred to the small Polish breed to reduce the size. Belgian Hares, Tans, Harlequin, Mini Satins, and Britannia Petites were other instrumental breeds. Now that the Elfins have been included in the Swedish Hare population, an international exchange of breeding stock is possible.
Selection for the Swedish Hare is based on criteria directly related to the ability to jump and compete in jumping competitions. Color does not affect jumping ability, so there are no disqualifications for color or markings. Color does help to tell the competitors apart, so wild and unusual colors are encouraged. The standard selects for the ability to jump in competition and avoids animals that might be hindered by extreme body type, coat, or ear length. Almost all the standard rabbit breeds have individuals that do well in rabbit sports, but Swedish Hares should excel in rabbit sports.
Kalteth is named for the moon goddess Kaltes-Ekwa, who is often depicted as a hare.
Why Me? Kalteth found in Shenja a soulmate. They are both sociable entertainers with joy in their hearts and she wants nothing more than to share her wonder with Shenja. His flexible nature – in form and thought – means her own relaxed personality can blossom in a time where rank and status have taken center stage. But don’t worry! Shenja’s competitive, curious nature will ensure he and Kaltheth get the credit they deserve and they will deserve much if he is able to guide her through the fledgling age and into the sky. Just watch out for those unexpected turns life can take! As neither is very good with surprises, graceful shows can turn into unintentionally hilarious disasters is such surprises crop up. Competitions, play, and adventure will all call the energetic pair into the sky in defense of home and hearth.
Shenja: He's mine and he's the best ever! We're going to have so much fun! Wheee! Shenja is my little brother, and I worry sometimes about that boy. Will we be separated now? I'm not looking forward to such a thing. Green Kalteth I can't believe she's... mine. I don't ever want to leave her. I hope I never have to! We're going to have many adventures together, I can tell! This is going to be great! Me! I'm green, I'm happy about it! Green is great for me! Black is great for others, and blue, and bronze, and gold, but everybody is what they should be! Why be anything else? -----
Diedre: My sister. I love teasing her, but I'm honestly worried. Shes got her moments of weakness and fear. But don't worry sis, Kally and I will help you, okay? -----
Menndan: I got to say, out of my half siblings, he's got to be my favorite! I can't wait for Kally to meet him! Then all three of us can go off on advantures! This is going to be great! ---- Its like having two Shenjas, except one actually runs off while the other pesters me. Its hard to believe I share blood with this one.
Ulir: He's a bit like Diedre. Hard to believe we aren't related to him at all. He doesn't like me, and I don't really like him all that much. I can pester Didi because shes my sister, but I dont do that so much with him. I get the feeling it would be a bad idea. Can't wait to tell him I'm a rider, though! ---- Its hard to believe he's Menndan's half brother. He's very calm and rational and traditional. I can appreciate that. I know he doesn't like us much, and- considering father- I can understand that, but I try to at least be cordial to him. DOLPHIN Vikkik: Dolphins? DOLPHINS. Vikkik is hilarious. ---- -----
