Character Name:Devlin - now D'lin
Age: 19
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Craft/Rank: Apprentice Metal Smith

History: Devlin grew up as part of a family where the father was defineatly the king of his own little castle. This wasn't necessarily a bad thing but he was certainly a proud man, proud of his family and proud of his work in the field of Smithcraft. Imagine his dismay then when his wife birthed two daughters - both petitie and completely uninstrested in a field such as smithcraft. After several years of unsucsessfully trying for another child he was finally granted a son.

He had great plans for his son and from a very early age attempted to push him in a specific direction. He wanted his son to follow in his footsteps - which was understandable and quite normal. Unfortunately Devlin had no intrest in this life - and while he learned smithcraft because his father forced it on him, he detested it. Allot.

The work was hard, hot and repetitive, it kept him chained to the forge when Devlin would much rather be enjoying his time elsewhere, but his father had no sympathy for his son's green thumb and adamantly refused to let him pursue work in farming. Devlin liked growing things but his father considered this a field for lesser people. There was no way his only son was going to become a farmer of all things. His older sisters were spared the pressure placed upon Devlin as they sought to become weavers and housewives like thier mother and it wasn't long before Devlin began to resent thier relative freedoms. It was absurd he knew because they could hardly be blamed for it and they had other limits placed on them - for instance whom they would end up marrying. His father was keen to move up in Pern society and Devlin knew he wasn't afraid to use his daughters to help build those proverbial bridges. Or his son for that matter - although in a differant way.

Devlins father was forever more boasting about his son's skill in the forge, about how advanced he was already and how he would surely walk the tables early once he found a suitible helper to replace him at home. Devlin knew this was mostly a lie - his work was...functional...but there was no heart in it, no extra care that set it above and beyond anyone elses work because he just didn't care about the field. It wasn't long before devlins apathy towards smithcraft would backfire on him. Once should always pay attention in the forge it was a dangerous place and when one misplaced tool caused him to trip while moving a hot bit of metal - Devlin paid the price with a nasty burn across his shoulder and chest. It was painful and left an awful looking scar...but it did allow him time away from the forge while he healed so Devlin couldn't find himself too sorry for the accident. In fact he pretty much considered the pain worth it.

His father on the other hand was appaled - it certainly put a stop to his boasting, how could he claim Devlin was extrodinarily skilled when he bore such an obvious scar proclaiming him to be clumsy in the forge? It did not however lessen the pressure put on him by his father. He'd justh ave to work harder his father told him to overcome this mark of shame and prove himself skilled. A 'learning expirience' his father called it and filled more and more of Devlins time with lectures and scroll reading to do with Metal Smithing as his burn healed to the point he would soon be back in the forge as the heat would no longer bother it.

Devlin was not looking foreward to this and if he was truthful would have to admit he'd been perfectly capable of going back to the forge for a while now...but had been stalling and just a bit untruthful about how well his burn had healed. He was starting to get desperate when the search rider appeared on the horizan. When Devlin was singled out as a possible candidate he seized the chance to escape the way a drowning man seizes a piece of floaing wood. A lifeline had been thrown to him and Devlin was going to make the best of it. Flying to Trine with the search rider was just the start he told himself of a life without forges.

Description: Devlin is well muscled with particularly strong shoulders and arms from his time working in the forge. His hands are worn with calluses and rather large but surprisingly light and gentle when tending to small children or animals. He's a bit on the tall side of average and can seem rather intimdating at first glance because of both his height and broad shoulders. His hair is a light sandy brown and while he tried to keep it short for comforts sakes (forgers were hot and now it's just habit) it has a tendency to curl up at the ends creating a rather rogueish or mussed look no matter how much he tries to flatten it down. He is typically well tanned from spending time outdoors and has pale grey eyes and a strong jawline.

Devlin would likely be considered 'imposing' or 'striking' rather then outwardly handsome and this impression is only punctuated by a scar that runs across his left shoulder and part of his chest.

Personality: Devlin seems to have two main goals in life - to free himelf from he envisioned enlavement life as a smith would be to him and to be seen as who he is rather then who his parents wanted him to be...to gain thier approval even if he dosen't follow the path they seemed set on him taking. Devlin wants to enjoy life for what it can be, he wishes to stop and smell the roses every now and then, not follow a path that was chosen for him - and for which he finds no love of. He is generally seems to be a calm person, outwardly cool and colleced about most situations but inwardly highly emotional and prone to being easily irritated when someone infringes on what he considers his privacy.

Although Devlin likes to believe he's idealistic and believes in the better things in life, in truth he has a slightly pessimistic outlook and is far more prone to seeing the bad in a situation then the good, such 'bad' stands out like glaring flaws in his percieved perfection to his mind and he's never realy happy until such things are fixed.

He has a good work ethic as long as the chore seems to have a point to it, if he considers it a pointless or time wasting chore he has a tendency to become unmotivated until the point of the work is pointed out to him. With most decisions he is a fairly controlled individual, often thinking things through very carefully before he makes a move though he has a tendency to think most peoples are expecting him to fail and can be a little bit paranoid about that fact.

Despite his generally cool nature when it comes to others Devlin is a bit of a hidden knight - he's the unexpected rescuer someone might have if they were being pushed around as he simply can't stand to see someone run over by thier peer's and is incredibly stubbon when it comes to his beliefs that everyone should have a right to choose thier on path in life. When it comes to solving problems however he can be incredibly flexible.

Devlin can come across as a bit cold to those who don't know him as he prefers to keep mostpeople at arm's length and gather only a small group of 'true' friends. He seems to prefer female company which might stem from his lack of male companionship growing up in a female dominant family. He is ever the gentlemen when it comes to these females however and can be rather obtuse when it comes to any feelings they might have for him. He tends to be reserved in social situations like feasts and gatherings but is far more open and foreward when it comes to solving a problem of handling 'business'.

He has a distaste for sharing close or personal information, most people would consider him 'secretive' though he just dosen't like to air out dirty laundry when its jut not other people's business, most of the time he simply tries to turn such conversations around on the questioner or simply change the subject. His sense of humor could easily be defined as dry and sometimes cynical.

Devlin does have one small little proble however when it comes to life at the Weyr, he's afraid of heights - clearly this is something he'll have to work though but he's confident that he can overcome this irrational fear in time. In the meantime...he just handles it the best he can.

HP - 62 + 15 HP (Wingleader) = 77 HP
Wingleader bonus +5 to Burn DIce.
Dmg Mod - (-3)

Name: Plexith
Color: Bronze
Animal: Monarch Butterfly
Hatchling Image, Teen Image.Adult image
Personality:
Everybody has a routine, and he does mean everybody. For Plexith, having that reliable pattern to fall back on ensures that everything is as it should be. He’s a stickler for rules and rank and has a particular way of doing things. That’s not to say he’s a perfect gentleman, however, as this proud bronze is most definitely haughty. As a bronze, he’s at the top of the pecking order, plain and simple. He expects everyone to just accept that that’s how the Weyr runs – the greens and blues and blacks are really just to fill out the ranks. However, when it comes to the browns and crimsons… he sees rivals. These are the odd ones out, the wild cards, and the one with no preset path like the other chromatic colours. This upsets Plexith to no end – he doesn’t get much choice, the golds don’t get much choice, so why is it that the middleman has the most flexibility? It just doesn’t make sense. He’s got the head of a leader but he’ll always push browns and crimsons the hardest, constrain them the most – perhaps it’s his own way of dealing with the wildcard they present?

He’s a confident bronze, with an even temperament, an impressive wingspan and a subtle, beautiful marking pattern. Graceful would describe this one well, along with dependable and even predictable. Possessed of very little flexibility even from a young age, his ability to absorb and then apply rules will perhaps win him friends and followers as he is not deliberately abrasive and most genuinely interested in the betterment of his Weyr. Yes, his Weyr. You see, he’s determined to be the top of the top – to be a wingleader, to fly the senior queen, everything that is a bronzerider’s dream. And he certainly has the drive to do so.

That said, he’s also an incredibly picky eater. This can result in him not eating enough or frequently enough because he’ll turn his nose up at something. His rider will have to take great care in exposing this bronze to food as he prefers the richest cuts and most succulent delicacies, especially marrow and brain – both things many dragons quite prefer but in his case it’s his first choice.

In the end, Plexith is competitive, proud, and particular – everything a bronze is said to be.

Why Me!?

This is, perhaps, one of those hot-meets-cold pairings you hear about. Plexith is a stickler rank and rules and prestige, believing strongly in the traditional methods of running a Weyr and Devlin doesn’t want to be caged by expectations. These opposite approaches will likely lead to clashes but when they work it out – and they will, it’s hard imagining the bronze remaining so rigid when he envies the freedom of the browns – there is so very much potential there.

There is much about Devlin that compliments Plexith, among which is the boy’s desire for things to have a purpose. His good work ethic, while not perfect, is another thing this bronze was drawn towards. They say every dragon finds a rider to complete them and in this case, Plexith’s devotion to the rules will is complimented by Devlin’s desire for actions to have purpose – breaking the rules, after all, couldn’t possibly serve much positive purpose could it?

Still, Plexith can be social in his quest for top-dog and will garner much attention for his ambition… attention that will be brought into Devlin’s life. That His dislikes sharing personal information is perfectly fine! The trick is in getting people to like you without really actually knowing you and this fringe approach also resonates with Devlin’s want of core friends and many acquaintances. Plexith needs to learn the value of friendship and Devlin already knows the wisdom of quality over quantity – hopefully it’ll rub off on the bronze!

Another clutch has come and gone since the one where I impressed Plexith, it certainly seems like it has been longer but I suppose that's the way time flies when there is so much going on. So much in fact that I haven't had time to write in here since then. I'm not even sure where to start to be honest...Plexith says to start at the beginning but that's easier said then done.

Seems easier to start with the more recent news and just work my way through the rest. I'm happy to say that this more recent clutch was a far more happy affair then the last one, everyone remembers of course the poor crimsons death but as with all things people move on, that's just the way of life. Even happier a friend of ours named Lilias impressed to a rather striking looking green - it will be nice to watch them grow together. The Weyr gossip also managed to impress to a green - I expect the two of them will be the source of more then little trouble as time goes on. Plexith on the other hand is not at ll happy with the arrival of another bronze..well he says he is happy to have another bronze, the weyr can use them..but I don't think he's pleased with the added competition to his ambitions.

Speaking of ambitions Plexith managed to win a flight, and on only his second try at that...it was a green of course but for a young bronze he can still be proud and Zaybreth and hers - a women named Raelae - were a nice couple, they even painted picture of Plexith and I've hung it in my weyr alongside the shelf with Lilias carving. Plexith gets all the fan art. Perhaps next time he will fly a gold...he seems to be sure of it.

That same women happened to be our guide on a time mission, I'm pleased to say we timed it well and arrived home easily enough, our mission went far more smoothly then some of the other riders - its hard to see the scars on some of them but I know its something one must get used to in this day and time. Everyone is talking about the Red Star and whats its arrival means, flight practices have been increased in response to this and I'm fairly certain that Plexith and I will soon be placed in a wing along with the rest of his hatch mates. Plexith of course thinks he should lead a wing...but I've convinced him that some practice in a wing should come first....thankfully.

Plexith's distress has kept me awake tonight longer then normal. I have heard the rumors of course and I knew what would happen once the Benden clutch hatched but even being prepared for it Plexith's keening and statement of 'Gold Yirath is no more' was hard to hear. I can only give thanks to the fact that he will soon forget as all dragons do, as a bronze I expect it is especially hard for him to feel the demise of a Queen. Thankfully the distance from the event seems to have lessened the trama somewhat.

What a terrible thing for someone to have done - I simply can't believe that it was Malvren, even if they Weyrs are not getting along killing a weyrwomen and her gold seems like an extreme I don't think the Malvren leaders are capable of. But there are others in this world who would go to great lengths to gain power, I would not necessarily put it past another rider to do something like this. Had Benden a Jr. Weyrwomen I might have placed suspicion on her but last I heard Yirath was the only gold they had - excluding of course the egg from this hatching. Perhaps a bronze rider then? Thinking it might be easier for his older bronze to catch a younger more inexperienced queen when the time comes? It is a thought, but one that sours my gut, if it does turn out to be a bronzerider I will be quite shamed on behalf of my fellows.

I have not heard the results of the hatching - no doubt the results will make their way to Trine tomorrow at some point, such information has a way of getting around - even in the face of such tragedy - but I wish the new riders and their dragon's well regardless, even with all the suspicion and anger floating between the weyrs...we're all drgonriders in the end right? Surely someday we'll come to see that.
