I'm not saying I'm homophobic.
I support equal rights fully. But I don't shove it down people's throats. That's how a lot of these fangirls treat people outside of the fandom, making people get into it, forcing their guy friends to dress up as the male characters. It makes a lot of people feel uncomfortable. And even for me it makes me feel slightly uncomfortable. I'm just uncomfortable with all of these pairings becoming 'canon' because a lot of fangirls take those hints and take them too seriously.
Even as a fan of many pairings in the series, I wouldn't want them to be canon like a lot of the other active posters in this thread. Not only is it fuel for these ADHD fans but it makes Hetalia look bad. It's supposed to be a historic comedy. Not a BL romance series. I have nothing against yaoi/BL fanwork made by any fans of the series. But it makes me feel that the producers are only motivating them to do that.
But back to the straight pairing deal, I've never, never seen anybody force any straight pairings into anybody's throat from Hetalia. It just seems like something only the 'hipster' part of the fanbase does.
In a nutshell, I was just stating my opinion. I'm not homophobic but I know people who are that watch Hetalia. And I give them props for having to deal with that fanbase. It just breaks my heart to see that Hetalia appears that it's starting to move to a more dramatic series. (Not that it wasn't already. But you all catch my drift.)
Not to be a rebel, but you can't expect every Hetalia fan being all for homosexuality. Even anybody who posts on this thread. As much as I love Hetalia in all of its glory, I have my reasons that it could be better canon-wise.
So, you're saying there should only be straight pairings as, what, a way to punish the fandom? If it's really because it's a historical comedy and not a romance then, as I've been saying, there shouldn't be canon pairings at all. But to say there should only be straight pairings is, in fact, homophobic, whether you think it is or not. You don't have to hold a picket sign and throw around slurs to be homophobic.
I don't expect everyone to be "all for" it because I know better, but I also don't support avoiding it to make those people comfortable. If insisting upon equal representation is shoving it down people's throats, fine, I'll do just that, and consider it a good thing. I will not defend oppressors.
I do agree that the amount it has turned into a "boy love" thing is bad, but that can really be linked to the uneven distribution of sexes among the characters. There should be more female characters, with more screen time. Simply saying "No gay pairings" accomplishes nothing but dealing a blow to equal representation in the media.
Maybe if there were more canon gay pairings in general, not Hetalia, people would stop frantically grabbing at and obsessing over any hint of gayness in everything. Have you seen fandoms like Sherlock, Teen Wolf, Merlin? Do you know why people grasp desperately at any hint of gayness? Count the canon gay pairings. You can do it on one hand. You might not even have to lift any fingers. The reason for this is because there are hardly ANY gay characters in the media, and most of the ones who exist are stereotypes, and their entire character revolves around them being gay. MAYBE people would stop obsessing over it if it was more commonplace.
So much for dropping the topic.
