• I sighed, watching Fujita go around on the merry-go-round from a nearby bench. “Geez, you must be a little kid if you like those things.” I teased as Fujita stepped off the platform.

“I am not a little kid!!” She said, crossing her arms.

“Seems like it to me. Now then, what now?”

    “Bumper cars!”

“I expected you to say the merry-go-around again.”

“Hey!” I laughed and led her over to the bumper cars.

“Two.” I said to he vendor at the window before stepping onto the bumper car platform.

“I’m so getting you back for calling me a little kid!” She proclaimed, climbing into a car.

“Yeah right!” I called back, climbing into another car. The bell rung and we were off.

“I so totally kicked your but!” Fujita proclaimed as we sat down on a nearby bench.

“What are you talking about? I kicked your but!”

    “No, I won!”

Just as I was about to reply, Fujita’s friends appeared, smiling and thinking, Aw! I knew those would end up together! I sighed and shook my head slightly at the sound of that.

“We didn’t think you two would be here!”

“Of course we would! I wouldn’t miss the Summer Festival for the world!” Fujita proclaimed, smiling. I glanced over at her and concentrated hard in order to read her thoughts.

Nothing. I heard absolutely nothing coming from her head. I could hear everyone else’s thoughts, but not Fujita’s. It’s always been like this. I could never read her thoughts since the day I met her. Her mind was blank, with no thoughts I could access. I grew angry and tightened my grip on my soda, crushing it a little.

“Is something wrong Rez?” Fujita asked, breaking my concentration.

“Nothing’s wrong.” I lied. Nearly everything was wrong. To make matters worse, a strong gust of wind came by and blew the sweet scent of Fujita’s blood towards me. I stood up abruptly and proclaimed, “I’m heading home,” before walking away.

“Okay. See you tomorrow Rez.” Fujita called after me with a worried tone of voice.

Throwing my soda away, I climbed up onto the roof of my house and stared at the asphalt tiles. “Why can’t I read her thoughts?” I asked myself angrily. “Everyone else’s comes so easily.” I sighed, lying back and staring at the quarter moon. “Why?” I asked before falling asleep.

I awoke to the sensation of cold water against my skin. Sitting up, I realized that it was raining rather hard. I also noticed that my clothes were soaking wet. Sighing, I swung into my room through my window, grabbing a towel as I landed. “I’ve got to stop sleeping on the roof.” I said to myself, coming out of the bathroom in different dry clothing.

Sitting on the bed, I stared out my window into the dark and gloomy morning. Next thing I knew, my cell phone went off. Looking at the caller ID, I saw “Fujita.” The corners of my mouth curling into a small smile, I opened my phone and said, “Hello?”

“Hi Rez! I was wondering if I could come over to your house for a bit. My parents are out and I don’t really want to be home alone.”

“Come on over. I don’t mind.” I replied in a calm, cool voice.

“Great!” She hung up and immediately, the door bell rung. I sighed and went downstairs to get the door.

“You were already here, weren’t you?” I asked, opening the door to see Fujita.

“Yep!” She said before stepping inside. “Thanks for letting me stay over!”

“No problem. Take a seat. You hungry?” I asked, stepping into the kitchen.

“No, not really. But thanks anyways!” She said, sitting down on the couch. I walked over and sat down next to her. “So whatcha want to do?” She asked.

    “I don’t know.” I said, turning on the T.V.

Two hours later, Fujita’s parents had returned and she had left, leaving me on the couch by myself. Thinking of that past after noon of conversations, watching T.V., and showing her around my house, I had finally come to a conclusion as to why I couldn’t read her mind.

“I’m an idiot. I swear. No wonder I can’t read her thoughts. I love her.”
