Foolish is he who doesn't understand.

A legend tells of a gypsy woman
who pleaded with the moon until dawn.
Weeping, she begged
at the break of dawn
to marry a gypsy man.

"You'll have your man, tawny skin,"
Said the full moon from the sky,
"But in return I want the first child
that you have with him,
because she who sacrifices her child
so that she is not alone,
isn't likely to love it very much."

Moon, you want to be mother,
but you cannot find a love
who makes you a woman.
Tell me, silver moon,
what you intend to do
with a child of flesh?
A-ha-ha, a-ha-ha,
son of the moon.

From a cinnamon-skinned father
a son was born,
white as the back of an ermine,
with grey eyes instead of olive --
moon's albino child.
"Damn his appearance!
This is not a gypsy man's son
and I will not put up with that."

~

Believing to be dishonoured,
the gipsy went to his wife,
a knife in his hand.
"Whose son is this?
You've certainly fooled me!"
And he wounded her mortally.
Then he went to the woodlands
with the child in his arms
and left it behind there.

Moon, you want to be mother,
but you cannot find a love
who makes you a woman.
Tell me, silver moon,
what you intend to do
with a child of flesh?
A-ha-ha, a-ha-ha,
son of the moon.

And the nights the moon is full
it is because the child
is in a good mood.
And if the child cries,
the moon wanes
to make it a cradle.
And if the child cries,
the moon wanes
to make it a cradle.

((For you nuts that want to spoil some of his background for yourselves before it'spolished, here's what I've got so far. Fools. And it's small to conserve space.))

Foolish is he who does not understand...

It is said that those with all the luck miss out on happiness. Such was the case with a young Romni long ago. Mirella was the best medicine woman in all of the Kumpania, and everyone went to her for advice. She was respected and admired throughout the land, and was always surrounded by friends. Yet because of her status, no man tried to get close to her out of fear. They have heard tales of a woman scorned, and had no desire for revenge from a powerful, revered figure. And so they left Mirella to her friends and her medicine.

But Mirella, for all her power and admiration, was lonely. She longed for a man to share the long nights with, to love and start a family with, and eventually to grow old with. As the moons passed, the night's silence grew unbearable. One night she prayed to the moon to send her a man, for the moon was the dreamseer, and was believed to have the power to make dreams become reality.

The moon listened to Mirella's pleas unfeelingly at first. It was she who had created her own fate, and now she must deal with it. However while the night progressed, she began to sympathize with the woman. She too was alone, without anyone to love and cherish. When the sun began to rise, she struck a deal with Mirella. She would send the woman a man, yet in return she would take their first born child, feeling that if a woman gave her child to feel loved, she could not love the baby very much. Mirella agreed, and the terms were set.

A short time later, a man named Vedel, son of the Kapo of the Kumpania, asked to court her. She joyfully accepted, and after a moon, they were married. Mirella was happier than she could ever remember being, and was even more pleased when her new husband told her the same. They reveled in each other, and nine moons after their wedding, Mirella gave birth to a son.

Vedel was overjoyed at the birth of his son, yet when he saw the child he withdrew in shock. While the father was a tawny gold, with glowing olive eyes, the child was white as the snowfall, from head to toe, and sported eyes of dull gray. Enraged, the man went to his wife, believing to have been tricked. He demanded an explanation, and when Mirella could not give him one, he drew his knife and stabbed her. Moving to do the same to his newborn son, he was frozen by the child's innocence, and instead took the baby to the woods and abandoned him there.

Mirella, in her final moments, prayed to the rising sun to help her child. The sun was angry with the moon for interfering in the lives of humans, and took pity on the woman. In exchange for the last of her life's light, he found the child in the woods and cast a spell over him. While he couldn't change the boy's appearance, he made it so that he would be seen as a normal human during the day. At night his powers weakened, and the child would be seen as he truly was. The child's right eye turned gold, and the spell was set. Smiling, the sun set the baby on the outskirts of a nearby Romany camp, and went to deal with the moon.

That evening a young woman found the boy, and took him back to the camp. He was brought before the Kapo and adopted into their Kumpania. The woman was overjoyed, for she finally had a child to call her own. She brought him to her husband, and the two embraced him as a part of their family. Yet they had no idea about the future incidents that would come with their newfound son.~

Imprisoned in a never-ending night by the sun for her insurrection, the moon watched over the child, when an idea came to her. The boy was not hers yet, but with careful planning his bond could free her yet. At night, the moon went to the new mother of the child, and gave her a warning. She was never to let anyone look upon her son after nightfall, not even the boy himself, lest a terrible fate befall them. Worried for her new son, the woman agreed, and from that day forth took careful measures to follow the moon's instructions.

Despite his exceedingly early curfew, the boy had a peaceful and happy childhood. He made friends, learned the ways of his clan, and in time started to walk, talk, and even work for the Kumpania. The only thing that set him apart were his dreams, in which a mysterious woman cloaked in silver told him stories of years past. Even as a child, he was fond of this woman, though he never told anyone about the dreams.

When the child was of an age to comprehend what the dreams said, he was told to ask to learn the arts of divination. Made curious by the strange woman, he went to his mother and asked her to teach him. She agreed, and together they explored tarot, casting, and crystallomancy, among other methods. The child was fascinated by everything he was taught, and absorbed each lesson with an almost unnatural speed.

One night the child was unable to sleep. Something inside was unsettled, and longed for the outdoors. Ignoring his mother's rule, he snuck out into the forest. The full moon guided him through the dense trees, until he came to a small clearing. There, he was greeted by the woman from his dreams. She embraced the child, and pleaded for his help. She was trapped somewhere far away, she told him, so far even she didn't know where she was. Only he could come and free her, and then he would know why he was different. Why he always felt sad or angry when the moon was waning, and happy when it was going back to full. Why he was never allowed out of his (Vardo) after dusk. And most of all, who his real parents were. The woman kissed the child on the forehead, and vanished from sight.

The child awoke the next morning as he normally did, except he had a strange, moon-shaped charm clutched in his hand. As he started to think where it came from, his mother entered and his day began, pushing the night's mystery from his mind. He shoved the charm under his pillow, and there it remained, forgotten.

His dreams grew more intense from that day on, showing images of light clashing against darkness, night fighting day. The woman showed up constantly, pleading for the child's help. A man in shining gold armor surrounded by an army of bronze circled the moon, aiming swords and bows at it. A black shadow seemed to slowly grow over the sun, blocking all traces of love and light. Each picture seemed to make him more and more distressed, but he still wanted to know more. And so he continued in his studies.

He also learned to fight, taught by his adoptive father. As with everything he has learned so far, he progressed quickly, and was soon able to beat some of the men in his Kumpania. Each victory brought him more courage, and the feeling that one day he would be able to rescue the woman in his dreams. As his body grew more strong and agile, his mind followed suit, and his other lessons came with increasing ease.

After a time, the sun discovered the moon's plot. Instead of punishing the moon further for her treachery, he decided to shop her scheme from the other side. One sunrise, just after the boy awakened, and the rest of the camp was still asleep, a figure clothed in golden fabric approached him. His message was a simple warning- that if he wanted to ensure the safety of himself and his family, and keep the natural order in check, he had to ignore any future appearances of the woman in siler, and go about his business. Once his message was delivered the sun left, but not before leaving behind a beautiful bronze dagger, a better weapon than any he had trained with. Confused, the child hid the dagger with the pendant he had recieved from the woman, to keep them both from his family.

The child had done as he was asked by the woman, and still no answers. Now he was to ignore her? He decided that neither stranger was to be trusted completely, and that he would follow both their directions to the best of his abilitiy. Still, there were many questions burning in his mind. Why did the two figures ask what they asked? Why were they asking different things? And most of all, why him? Why was he so important to both of them?

These questions repeated themselves in the boy's head endlessly, until he couldn't take any more. One summer evening, he packed both the pendant and the dagger he recieved from the strangers, and left the camp to find what he saught- answers, a clue, anything that would ease the confusion he had.

But answers never come cheap, or easy.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. "Dmah" was one of the first Legends that Karan met, and they seemed to hit it off. Since then, they've become friends, and Karan's extremely fond of him.
I feel safe when Demare is around. I haven't seen him in a while, but he's still someone I really like. And trust. I should try to find him soon, but...

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. Karan liked Gyre's wings, and how she fluffed them, but for the most part this girl seemed to confuse him more than anything.
I don't remember meeting her. ((RP pending))

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. "Gwee," Aunty Pink's Legend, shared her toys with Karan and showed him about ear scritches. Despite some initial misunderstandings the two became friends.
I played with her a lot when I was little. She was nice, but really lovey-dovey. I haven't seen her in a long time.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. Keita has soft ears which Karan LOVES to scritch and pet, and he likes Keita for letting him scritch and being nice. So far, these two get along pretty well.
I remember scratching his ears, but that's it.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. At first, Karan was a little apprehensive around this Legend. But once Chandra showed him her moon pendant, he became a bit more friendly, even showing him his own moon.
I don't remember meeting her, but she gave me something pretty I wear on my belt.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. When they met once, Prana's unusually warms hands seemed to disturb Karan, even though she was trying to help him. But she has managed to help him, and is now considered a friend.
She's staying with us now while her mom does something else. I wish she wasn't so sad. All in all, she's not so bad. For a girl.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. Karan only got to see this legend for a few moments, and despite her short stay here the two never had much contact.
She was here? I don't remember.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. This Legend scared Karan, but I'm not sure why. He was very nice, but Karan keep muttering "hot." Maybe he doesn't like Loki's fire?
I don't remember meeting him, but I remember fire.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. Seven looked very interested in Karan, and the feeling was mutual. They examined eachother very closely, and even though there were a couple slight mishaps, they seemed to get along well. DS, however, is wary of him after the hot coffee incident.
I remember when the hot stuff spilled on everything. I think we played catch, and I know I had his goggles for a while.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. "Lei" brought out Karan's competitive side for the first time, and the pair engaged in an energetic game of ball.
I think I remember him. We played with my ball.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. "Kaii," a sweet girl who doesn't talk, caught Karan's attention mostly because of how she looks.
She had four legs and a bunch of tails! But I only saw her once.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. Despite this Legend's utter shyness, the two managed to interact a little. However, it seemed that trust would have to be worked up before anything else could happen.
He was with the dark kid. I liked his scarf.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. The self-appointed guard of Lafe also made an impression on Karan. The three played a little ball together, and there was a general sense of curiosity among them.
He was with the fox boy. He didn't seem to like me much.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. "Goo boy" was an object of fascination. He was yellow, and gooey, and he had fun looking things around his head that reminded Karan of his ball. Even though there was a spill or two, they seemed to get along very well.
He had cool planet things around his head! We played with Guin and my ball. I want to ask him about his planets now. ((RP pending))

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. This girl definitely confused Karan. Zita was reluctant to return Karan's treasured ball, which he didn't understand much. Perhaps she had yet to learn about sharing.
She liked my ball. That's good, right? I only saw her once.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. Waya's another one that ranks as "fluffy" in Karan's books. At first things seemed stiff between them, but they bonded over brownies and a coloring book.
Prana and I went to his house and we talked for a while. I think he has some kind of ghost wolf. He's okay, but it was tough talking. I think he likes Prana better, but that's fine with me.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. Karan met this sweet-sounding girl on a solo trip to the HQ. Apparently the two ended up attacking the girl's guardian! They have some wild theory about the house as well.
Mayu was nice, I guess. We talked and then ended up exploring the big house. We think it might be alive! But we jumped on her mom by mistake, and then it was time to go. I want to look more next time I'm there. As for Mayu, she's nice. Pink. A lot like the girls, but a little more sensible.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. Karan came across this unknown Legend in the kitchen of the Headquarters. Apparently he was alone! I wonder what of his guardian.
I saw him in the kitchen and gave him applesauce. He was okay, but that rainbow thing with him hurt my ears!

User Image
DS is the matriarch of the family, and a very strange one at that. She hates responsibility, but finds herself with more and more with each passing day. She tries to keep the world on her shoulders so that her loved ones can live freely, but this causes her to snap at times. A born drama queen on the outside, despite her mild demeanor, she is usually nervous and worried about one thing or another. Most of her life before Gaia is a mystery, and most of her life on gaia has revolved around baked goods. DS (both IC and OOC) types in indigo.

Aunt Olivia is something of a mythical figure in the Saturne household. She hasn't been seen yet, but she has written to DS regarding strange goings-on. Supposedly she is the one who set DS up with her houses (the one now in Port Gino and Vi'domi), as well as her bookstore. A sorceress, she is extremely powerful, but also very absent-minded, not the best combination. She tends to dote over her family, including DS, but their relationship is distant at best.

User Image
DS hasn't seen Raven or Glen in years, but they have both come up in conversation recently, and have been mentioned in letters between DS and Olivia. They are both her cousins, whom she lived with when she was younger. Their relationship has been strained for several years, so they tend to keep their distance. Recently Raven has come to Gaia to search for her cousin, a disturbing fact of which DS is blissfully unaware. Raven's speech is in
,teal.

User Image
Kiyu has been with DS for years, ever since she was a child, and acts mostly as an aid. She manages most things at DS's other house, Vi'domi, which houses stray creatures she picks up during her travels (and some her aunt finds as well). She is usually at Vi'domi, but travels to DS's other home on Gaia whenever she needs some extra help. These two seem quite close.

User Image
A rather confusing and drunk New Year's Eve introduced DS to Naita a bit forcefully. After a night neither remembers too clearly, DS invited the suddenly pregnant woman to live with her. Naita lives on the upper floor of the house, which can sometimes seem like another world, so that even though the two women live together they can sometimes go days without even seeing eachother.

User Image
Eriol is the oldest of DS's wards, physically at least, and in spite of her not wanting to play favorites, the one she is closest to. He loves adventure, and while he is content to read about it, would much prefer living his own. Though he doesn't always act it, he likes most of his family, even if he thinks it's too big and sometimes gets lonely. His rough and tumble attitude can seem uncaring, but he's really a softie on the inside. He has a fiery temper that matches newfound powers, a fact he is stil uncomfortable with. Eriol's speech, actions, and writing will be in
green.

User Image
Yeine technically isn't a ward, more like a boarder; she is staying with the Saturne family while training at the Gaia Jedi Academy. She is intensely shy and usually keeps to herself when at home, though she is somewhat more social with fellow apprentices. She hates being touched by others and will lash out at any who approach uninvitied, but other than that it is difficult to get the gentle Cathar angry. Still, her gentleness hides a quick mind and an agile body, both of which are being trained so that she may become one of the galaxy's finest. Yeine will be using
magenta.

User Image
Neither Naita nor DS is exactly sure how Bob came to be. Their daughter resembles a fish more than either of them, and a rather strange fish at that. While her name makes DS cringe, the young fishgirl is certainly loved by both her mothers. Bob's actions and speech is in a color yet to be determined.

User Image
A long and troubling night in a mysterious library was only the start of Eriol's new adventure. A strange book he came upon somehow became a young girl he was entrusted with. Viviana and her counterpart, the whale creature called Outcry, are both quiet and obedient- usually, at least. Vivi and Outcry's actions are in
indianred.

User Image
Xue came to DS's house under nearly as strange circumstances as Karan. However, instea of her adopting him, he adopted her, and wouldn't let her leave without him. Xue is a Porcelain, a race of beings who, while similar to humans, are smaller, built differently, and speak mostly through mindspeech, a fluid, empathic form of communication. Nearly always happy, he adores the company of others and will try to recruit anyone and everyone into a game. Xue will be using
light green.

User Image
Ying came from a stone DS picked up during one of her more recent travels and sent home to her godson Eriol. One of the Jumi, a race born from mysterious cores which reside in their chests until death and are key to preserving their life, Ying is a little skittish around unknowns. Rather than hide however, this courageous girl will look strangers in the eye and not back down. Thus, she is usually a good judge of character, and likes nothing more than helping others when she can. Ying speaks and writes in
dark pink.

User Image
Linnea is DS's oldest ward in terms of age, and another terribly shy one. Her fins make her very self-conscious, and they will start to tremble if she is feeling emotionally charged. She prefers staying in her room with her dolls to playing with other children. Born of a mysterious flower, she has an unusual connection with water that unsettles everyone, especially herself. Her speech and actions are in
blue.

User Image
Another garnet somehow found its way into the house roster, this one bonded to Ying. This shadow fiend, known only as Tsavorite, is snarky and a tease, and gets no greater pleasure than from a scheme to scare her bond. The two garnets are often at odds, and it remains to be seen whether they'll be able to stand eachother. Tsavorites actions are in
limegreen.

User Image
Melete is an exchange student from Neilan, a planet whose race is similar to humans, but highly empathic. Sent to Gaia against her wishes by her older brother, Mel is highly distrustful of most people she meets, and tends to avoid anything Gaian whenever possible. Melete's writings will be in
orange red.

User Image
A strange eggu began hanging around the house, and was taken in by some of DS's older wards, now being hidden in the attic. It's very energetic, hates being alone, and is rumored to contain a mytical creature called a Tsubasa inside. The kids dubbed it Quyen after doing some research. Qu uses
periwinkle.

User Image User Image
After seeing DS's self-made family, Kiyu decided to adopt a child in need of a home. She ended up with two- the twins Halcyon and Hestia. Well-bred young neko ladies, these two have conflicting opinions about many things. Despite this fact they complement eachother well and are the best of friends. Halcyon speaks in
lightblue, Hestia in pink, and when the two are together they speak in mediumpurple.

Holiday gifts from me, shortly after Karan's arrival. I'm saving the wand for when he's over, but he absolutely loves the ball.

User Image User Image User Image User Image
Some wonderful gifts from Lu-san and Gyre! Both dragons are a little worn now, from all the playing he's done, but he doesn't seem to mind. The bell and lantern hang in his window.

User Image
A delicate pendant from Huni-san, which I'm saving for when he's older.

User Image User Image
Plushies from a Secret Santa! Karan especially likes the snowman one.

User Image
A holiday present from Keita and Aureli revealed two neat little koi! At the moment they're nameless, as I'm hoping Karan will name them himself.

User Image
Another gift of a pet, this one from Demare. I'm calling the little one Dusk for now, and he seems to be Karan's favorite.

User Image
A package from Chandra contained this beautiful looking pendant. The note that came with it worries me, but Karan seems to really like it. ((The silver one is his, and the gold is Demare's))

User Image
I'm not sure where this came from, but Karan is fiercely protective of it. It's certainly pretty, whatever it is.

User Image
Yet another animal, this one from Prana. I call her Dawn for now. I'm afraid of letting her loose, so Karan hasn't seen much of her yet. She lives in the same tank as the fish, and so far they get along alright.

User Image User Image
Valentine's Day gifts from Pink and Guin. The window's getting crowded, but the candy sure didn't last long.

User Image User Image
A start to what may be a collection of astronomy paraphrenalia. I found these appropriate, but I'll have to wait and see.

User Image
Something else that just appeared in Karan's room. Since it hatched all it's been doing is sleeping under the bed. How odd... another pet that's unnamed for now.

User Image User Image
More gifts from Demare-kun. The journal has quickly become Karan's favorite coloring book. As for the new additions to his menagerie, now both beds have animals underneath. Luckily Xue doesn't mind.

User Image User Image
While out shopping, I picked up a couple trinkets for Karan. He especially likes the pendant.

Even more shinies, picked up on a family trip to a new store. Karan picked these out for himself, and they make the best mobile in the world.

Legend of the Tale is copyright Cheshire and Xaria. All the amazingly glorious are is copyright Cheshire, unless credited elsewhere. The banners used in this diary were made by the wonderfully talented Wren (azuredreams). Thanks to them all. heart

DS would also like to remind people that, except for the song (which was my inspiration), Karan's concept is hers. She will find out who wrote the song soon, but the story is all hers.

Lastly, she would like to thank everyone who supported her in her quest for Karan. Luff to all!
