Dear Devoted Reader,

Something is "canon" if it's considered an irrefutable fact of the Harry Potter universe - generally, something that Jo Rowling either wrote (i.e. the books, including "Fantastic Beasts" and "Quidditch Through the Ages") or stated to be fact (for instance, in the 2005 interview with Melissa and Emerson from Mugglenet, she said "Ron's Patronus is a small dog, like a Jack Russell").

Material offered in the films, however (in particular, material that's either new or that contradicts something from the books), is not considered canon, unless Jo Rowling has specifically confirmed a point to be true or if we know that she was consulted on a particular detail. So, chalk it up to artistic license that Seamus tends to make things explode when he attempts a spell (Film 1) or that Draco steals unclaimed presents (Film 2).
