Hobbies: Hawkeye, eat your heart out -- From a young age, Ian has been interested in archery. It started with watching old samurai movies with his dad and kind of expanded from there. Back home, there is an entire trophy case full of awards and ribbons he’s gotten for various things - but the bulk are archery related. He’s not the
best, not at all, but he’s
good and has gone on many hunts with friends and family members, utilizing his skills to participate in the kill.
He’s well aware of Hawkeye (he enjoys the comics quite a bit) but the movie version of Hawkeye is - in his estimation - the
worst archer in the history of archery. Not only is his
form wrong, there are so many little things about the way he functions that just piss Ian off endlessly.
Ian is pretty sure he’s a
much better shot than the MCU Hawkeye and spends time shooting videos for Youtube that show the difference between MCU Hawkeye and a
real archer.
A hunting we will go! -- While this hobby is one he’s fairly uncertain he’ll be able to entertain whilst living in Destiny City, it
is a big thing for Ian. He doesn’t hunt just to hunt, however - his father taught him better than that - so it’s not something he can indulge in as often as he’d like, even when in suitable environments. Ian’s father and grandfather were ‘big game’ hunters and as a child he would get to go on safaris with them, which is where he first learned to shoot both bow and firearm; they taught him to not waste a good kill to rot - either he makes use of it or someone
else does.
Otherwise there’s no reason to shoot something not actively trying to kill you. [This will be wrapped into Order hunting, once he’s in the Negaverse, thus it being logistically sound to have as a ‘current’ hobby.]
Without which we repeat our mistakes -- History is something that fascinates Ian. The way it’s cyclical, the way people don’t learn when they
could easily do so by observing past events. Ian believes that the best stick to measure future events/behaviours is by checking the past. He love for history started on one of the safari’s he went on while young where they used a native tribesman as their guide - in three months he’d managed to not only learn the language (children as sponges), but also discover the richness of their culture and history.
He was
hooked and since then has devoted himself to scouring History and learning what he can from it - thus his B.A in the field. Also, the job opportunities in having an undergrad degree in History are numerous and varied as all get out, so he feels it was an all-around good idea. Currently his plan is to teach for a bit, save up some money while figuring out what he
really wants to do.
Virtues: Adaptable -- Just as it says, Ian has the ability to process, parse, understand, and react to people, situations, ideas, and
things in a manner that generally allows him to better survive/deal with said interaction. It seems to be a family trait, as many of his cousins/family members
also benefit from this elasticity of self and ability to roll with the punches. For Ian, it allows him to be comfortable almost anywhere he goes, with anyone he’s with - it also means that in a survival situation, he’s likely to hang in there longer.
Likely he developed this trait during his childhood going on safari with his father and grandfather - a small child that will eat only one or two things will
not do well in far off places where ‘gourmet cuisine’ often means
cooked insects.Inquisitive -- A keen mind is a terrible thing to waste. As much as possible, Ian likes to keep up on current events, new discoveries in his field (and those related to it), research, languages, new teaching methods. Changes in text books. You name it, he’s interested. He would likely be happy being an eternal student, if not for his parent’s having insisted that he
not do that, and he selected teaching as his preferred occupation largely in part to the nature of the position: it meant he could always be learning new things, researching others. Feeding his mind and furthering his education with relevant bits of knowledge that fanned across a very broad spectrum - all while knowing it could - and likely
would - be applicable at some point.
Rather, that’s what he tells people. When really, he just likes to learn things so that he can know something [you] don’t, and lord it over [you].
Plebian.Precise -- In writing, working, archery, dress, and manner - in
all things - Ian tries to be as precise as possible. It’s a trait he decided he
wanted and as such worked towards having - so there are times, such as when he is overly tired, stressed, or just pushed to his limit(s), when he devolves from this and shows more of the person he might have been without it. He only uses “gutter” talk under those circumstances, much preferring to utilize a more formal tone and affect as much as possible. This shows in the way he dresses, in how organized his living and working spaces are, and also in his teaching methods (which are quite by-the-book and possibly ‘stuffy’) where/when it feeds into his stubborn nature.
Flaws: Changeable -- Moods, thoughts, ideas, and actions. As adaptable as he is, there
is a flip side to this - not only does Ian come across as moody (and sometimes unsettling) with the way he slides from one thing to another erratically. Whether this is a product of exercising self-restraint to an absurd degree, or simply a function of the varying chemical balance(s) in his brain at any given time, Ian is hard to pin down. He can seem entirely engaged in a topic or person one moment, only to shut down completely a moment later. For him it’s often all or nothing, as though the inbetween stages of being/doing/thinking were lost down some strange rabbit hole during his formative years.
Due to this, Ian sometimes finds it extremely hard to stay on task, though years of disciplined training have given him some measure of control over this, it still makes for some rather unfortunate problems in his life.
Stubborn -- To the point of stupidity, sometimes. Precision can be a boon, but when one is also a stubborn, moody person, it can often run right over into the absurd. This happens with Ian - when he has decided he is correct, or that his path is correct, he will not listen to another’s input; when said input comes from a superior, he struggles greatly to hold his tongue and apply the correction/information and has been known to mouth off when pressed too hard.
Personal and professional relationships suffer from his inability to accept that he may be wrong, and Ian has learned that the only person’s opinion(s) that he can rely on/trust to be
right are his
own. It’s a problem, he knows it is...but he just can’t seem to accept that he might need to work on
changing this flaw of his.
Distant -- Surface relationships only plz. There are
many ways that Ian can separate himself from his peers and those around him, but generally speaking it’s just a wall of “I am Better than You”. He’s a bit of a snob - a self-styled intellectual - and prefers to keep most people at arm’s length, especially emotionally. Physically he’s learned to use his presence to further his goals, but an actual
emotional connection is something Ian often finds difficult to forge - if he even wants to at all (usually, no.)
This separation works well for him in his teaching career, but not so well for long-term, lasting peer relationships. His changeable and often times mercurial nature help him to keep people at a distance. Very few people know much of anything beyond surface traits and niceties where Ian is concerned, and he rather prefers it that way.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION

Ian is something of a clothing snob.
