It was Bach that filled the quiet, spring morning at the Harroway stables that rest about forty five minutes outside the Destiny City limits. It was usually classical, they had an extensive collection, helped along by Delphine herself. Today it was Bach's violin concerto no.2, a lovely, upbeat piece that suited the neat layout of the stables, and those that were fortunate enough to have their horses kept there.

The dancer herself had two, currently. There had been a third, but she had sold the mare to young woman that had had her eye on the appaloose for competition. She had been Delphine's first project, and had been exceptionally pleased with the results. The mare had handled well, responding quickly to new orders and careful training. The two remaining were young yet, head strong. One a little more well behaved then the other, and it was the latter she was currently brushing down in preparation for the day.

This one, a male by the name of Darkest Hour(Here now at the Darkest Hour), was a stunning creature that stood a respectable seventeen hands. He was a hanoverian, black down to the fetlocks, with a small splash of white at the edge of his nose. It would be an easy day for him. A long ride, rather than an afternoon of whistles, calls, and repetition.

Ian had very little experience with the ins and outs of Destiny City and the surrounding areas, but what he did have was access to a vehicle and GPS on his cell phone. So he found his way to Harroway Stables fairly easily, drawing to a stop not at the office, but further down. His intention was to take a look at the stables and animals before he talked to anyone about renting one of the beasts...that way, if they were all nags that ought to be sent to the knacker, he wouldn't be wasting his time listening to flowery, undeserved, bullshit praise. I'll just cut out the middleman, now won't I?

Decent quality speakers played classical music overhead- Bach, but he couldn't place the piece and didn't really care to - and the stables themselves were smartly cared for. Things were promising already as the curly-haired blond walked the lines of box stalls, critically eyeing the shining beasts within. Clean, well kept...good stock so far.

Down the line, one stall didn't seem to be wholly closed - that often meant a person occupied the space as well as a horse - so he made for it; the beast was handsome, the girl working with it even more comely than the horse. Ian cleared his throat quietly, preferring to not spook girl or horse, and waited just outside the stall, arms crossed over the fine fabric of his button-down shirt. "Excuse me," he ventured after the beast had gotten a look and was unlikely to startle and smash the petite woman.

Dark was aware of the blonde before his trainer was, and the horse gave a small, responsive knicker at him before he was clearing his throat to get the dancer's attention. She turned, curious, to glance up at him before offering a polite little smile in greeting. Not someone she recognized around the stables, but that didn't really mean much. Delphine tended to to keep a rather narrow focus when she worked with her horses, and it wasn't outside the realm of possibilities for her to have missed one of the other owners.

Stepping carefully forward, she gave Dark a small pat before depositing the brush into the bucket hanging on the closest post, then slipped the dark gloves from small, delicate hands so she could drape them over the edge. "Good morning." It was polite, cultured, and patient, though also a touch curious. Was there something he needed from her, or had he just been wandering through and decided to stop.

How to ask without being blunt?

"I don't believe we've had the pleasure of meeting before now," or so she hoped. Wouldn't that be embarrassing. One small hand was offered out in greeting.

The horse greeted him with a low, soft sound, ears pricked forward even before the petite girl turned and smiled. "Morning." Ian had an odd feeling that he'd seen this girl - or perhaps someone very like her - in a photograph at Mrs. Hargrove's...but he had no idea when or why.

"Sadly, we have not as I only recently arrived to Destiny City." He took her hand with both of his, rather than giving her a plain, business-like shake. "Ian St. George. And you are?"

Her small hand disappeared in his own, but that didn't stop her from offering a steady shake. Her father had taught her well, made sure she knew the value of of a strong handshake. All manners and confidence. "Welcome to the city, then. I hope you find it as inviting and filled with opportunity as I have."

He looked familiar, but in that way where he resembled someone she knew. Close to make her wonder, but not quite enough for her to place it off hand. A family resemblance, perhaps, but to who? "I'm Delphine Rousseau, I have boarding here." Again that curious tone. Asking without asking what it is she could do for him. Of course, if it was company he wanted, she could provide that as well, at least for a short time.

Stepping back after he'd released her hand, she reached up to stroke her palm along the side of Dark's neck. The horse gave another soft whiny, shaking his large head before nudging the petite dancing in the shoulder with the top of his nose. "This is Darkest Hour."

"Thank you, Delphine. It is a charming place...I must confess, I am finding it more inviting by the moment." Ian released her hand in a manner that suggested reluctance, then smiled over at her horse. Clearly she was proud of the beast, and it was magnificent - but not as much of a thoroughbred as the girl herself.

"A beautiful animal, Hanoverian, yes? Warmblooded royalty, quite suitable for a genteel young lady such as yourself." Here he decided it was probably an opportune time to make his reasons for approaching her clear, she had hinted twice and also left a fantastic opening: they boarded horses, which often meant they could also let them, supposing there were any stable beasts - or private owners willing. "Actually, I am something of an equestrian myself and heard this was the best stable around. I wanted to talk to some of the owners if possible before seeking audience with the management."

"While I do not have a beast here myself, perhaps there are some that I could...borrow, for an afternoon or two." His English, lightly accented, said Paris, but his smile said sunshine.

Introductions were accompanied with a benign, friendly smile, but it brightened as he mentioned the breed of the stallion at her back. Grinning, she nodded, and again stroked her small hand along the animal's thick neck. "You are correct on all accords. He has been a delight to work with, obedient and calm from the moment he was brought into my care." They were not allspice me so highly of. Delphine has had a young stallion once that she had sought to transform into a jumper, but he'd been more than a handful. Rough enough that she wouldn't risk riding him, least she fall and hurt herself.

Ian's mention of sharing similar equestrian interests had dark eyes widening a touch, and she gave him another small dip of her head. "If you're looking for owners, ten touve found one. I've kept my bourses here since my family moved to the city a few years back." So he rode, but to what means? "You won't find finer accommodations then these.

"Tell me, what would you wish to do on these afternoons? There many horses here, with many skill sets and roles." Her head tilted gently towards the dark beast beside her. "For example, Darkest will be champion jumper when I'm through with him, but he makes a fine trail horse as well." Her own subtle accent was similar, but rather than Paris, she was old money creole. "Perhaps I could help you find the perfect match for you."

Ian nodded as Delphine spoke, smile never leaving his lips. "Never owned one myself, but I have had exposure to the breed, quite lovely." Her gentle intimation that he'd found an owner made the blond's smile grow so that the corners of his eyes crinkled up behind the boxy frames of his spectacles. "I was hoping you would say this."

"Generally it would be pleasure - trail riding, perhaps some jumping - it does get the blood going, doesn't it?" Was he saying this simply to appeal to the pretty girl, or did Ian actually mean it? Only time would tell, really. "Back home, I had a chestnut Selle Français hunter, lovely mare." Technically he still had her, as well as a Norman Cob that had been his first hunter and was now fat and lazy, but as the beasts remained stabled in France on his parent's estate...it was as though he did not have a horse of his own.

He moved closer to Darkest, reaching out with a confident hand to let the horse catch his scent before rubbing at the soft muzzle with genuine affection. "I would be most grateful for your assistance, it is hard to know what would be appropriate or untoward here."

"Lovely, and rather easy to manage, I've found." At least so far. Delphine had had a rather stress free time with Darkest. He responded to commands well, picked up on new ones easily, and had a very easy-going personality. Refreshing, having had some more stubborn and particular horses under her care. She leaned against the tall beast, the hand that had been stroking his neck stilling, and a small, pleased smile pulling at her lips as Ian spoke.

"If you've got the afternoon free, I was just about to take Dark on a ride, but if you wanted to join me, I could ride my mare instead, and we can see how you and Dark get along." She hadn't intended on doing much with Morning's Light today beside brushing the mare down, but a trail ride was an easy affair.

Besides, if the stallion got on well with Ian, then perhaps they could work something out to allow the young man access to him in leisure time. It wouldn't have been the first time she'd lent one of her horses out, and Ian himself seemed, so far, to be a rather upstanding, responsible young man.

The horse was not the only responsive one, Ian thought. Delphine was lovely, well-bred, and gracious...but she was also a woman. And young enough that flattery and sincere seeming attentions were like a skeleton key to her cooperation and affections.

With the just appropriate amount of excitement and gratitude fed into his words and manner, Ian accepted her offer. "It so happens that my afternoon is quite open today." Truly, the thought of riding the handsome stallion was an appetizing one after being grounded for so long, and if he could manage to charm Delphine further ...well, so much the better. "And I would love to ride with you, if you are certain it is not too much of an imposition, that is."

That he were hardly dressed for a trail ride was of no true consequence, Darkest Hour seemed biddable enough, unlikely to cause an experienced equestrian issue. Besides, how could he - a gentleman - refuse a lovely young woman the pleasure of his company? "There is nothing quite like a a good ride with excellent company."

Delphine's delight in his acceptance of her offer was rather obvious, despite her careful, prime appearance. There was a notable brightening of dark eyes, the twitch of full lips, and the tell tall straightening of the young woman's posture that spoke volumes. She was used to Stroud's flattering attention, but other's, handsome young men, were another story altogether.

"Not an imposition at all. This way both animals will get an afternoon's worth of exercise, and, as you say, there's the matter of excellent company to bare in mind." The dancer wasn't nearly as practiced with charm as Ian, but that didn't keep her from trying, nonetheless.

"I trust you know your way around saddling a stallion." She made a light gesture to the saddle that lay over the edge of the stall wall, as well as the reigns hanging beside them. "If you wouldn't mind, I can go get Morning's Light, and we can get on our way." The mare in question was in the same bare, just down the way. It wouldn't take her more than a few minutes to get her trail ready for the afternoon.

Had he been a normal sort, Delphine's obvious delight might have been infectious, putting him into a delighted mood over the simple joys the promise of an afternoon riding with a beautiful woman could afford. But Ian was not normal - genteel or not - and though his very body language were suffused with pleasure and what could be read as attraction, most of his pleasure came from having gotten precisely what he wanted. More than, actually, as he'd only hoped to speak with someone about the viability of his patronage at the stables.

"Then I shall, of course, accept your generous offer." His smile, at least, was mostly genuine - though Delphine might have been less pleased with it if she could see the machinations that made it so. Yes, this afternoon promises to be quite enjoyable. "Not at all, I'll have this fine fellow kitted out in no time." Ian gave Darkest another fond pat; he didn't anticipate any issues saddling Delphine's mild-mannered stallion while she tended her mare. It really was a mindless chore, though he worked slowly enough that he and Darkest would be ready to leave the stable just as she and the mare were - it was friendlier if they exited together, after all.

And once they were outside he could give her a hand mounting up, not because she'd need it, but because Ian knew doing so would please her refined sensibilities and it would give him a chance to put his hands on her in a manner that was wholly appropriate but would likely give her heart a bit of a skip. "Now then," Ian stepped to the stallion and swung up into the saddle with a practiced ease, finding his seat and reining the beast in closer to Delphine and the mare expertly.

She hadn't been idly bragging about her skills nor the quality of her horse: Darkest took commands like a dream - the slightest pressure of leg or rein brought smooth results. He was impressed with the responsiveness of the stallion and his estimation of the young woman and her abilities rose.

"As you are familiar with this area and I am not, I shall follow your lead."

Oh yes, Ian was a very charming individual. Delphine found herself quite pleased by that returned smile before she had left him with darkest so she could go and tend to her mare. It was, as always, simple work. Her horses were well behaved creatures. A combination of desirable genes and a skilled hand to train them. She'd learned from an uncle back in Louisiana, and had expanded on his teachings since their move to Destiny city. Dawn stood complacently, patiently, as the dancer tightened the belt of the saddle and gave it a testing tug.

When she lead the mare from the stall she was pleased to see Ian was just finishing up as well, and they left the stable together. Outside, he lent a hand to help her mount the mare before climbing onto Darkest. "And they say chivalry is dead." She chuckled as he reined the stallion around closer, smiling up at the tall blonde.

He indicated she should take the lead, and with a nod she'd give Dawn a little tap with her heels to get the mare moving, wheeling her around towards an opening in the trees off to heir right. The path itself wasn't a terribly tricky one, and it was wide enough, in most places, for them to ride two abreast. she'd wait for him to come up beside her again before flicking jade eyes back in his direction.

"So tell me, Ian. What sort of things strike the fancy of someone such as yourself?" She was hoping for hobbies of refinement and culture. "Perhaps I could be unofficial guide to the city, if you haven't found yourself one already."
