Zone 1: Objective #4 - Day Zero Log
Autumn couldn’t exactly write. Maybe if she’d had enough time being blind, but this was a relatively new condition for her, and she was coming to realize just how dependent on sight she really was.
Luckily she found someone willing to transcribe for her.
“Well, uh… You can leave that part out. But. The night it all happened, you know the one, I had been setting up for a volunteer event at the prison. One girly, Joy Ann actually, had just been by and left me with some cupcakes. And then the power went out. I noticed some folks in the hall…I now know one was an undying- and so I tried to run outside. It was worse out there, so I went back inside. I found a tiny office and hid under the desk.” Autumn laughed. “I don’t think I slept that night. I sat and listened for the tiniest hint of anything. It was the longest night of my life. Felt like a nightmare.”
She sighed. “The next morning things seemed quite enough. So I left the office. It was horrible. So quiet and so… The world basically ended that night, didn’t it?” Another little laugh. “I found others, and we all agreed to stay at the prison. It was safe, you know. Still is.”
Her hands rubbed together. “Since then it’s been pretty simple. Checking supplies, finding a bed, settling into a sort of routine. Training, cleaning, eating, sleeping. Making a life out of what is left. We have to pull the bodies off the fence…but that’s just… well we have to do it.” Autumn paused to swallow, and to change the topic.
“Things were pretty boring, well as much as they could be, until today. We went out to see about a weapon, and got shot at. I can’t see. Totally blind. Which is why I’m telling you this, instead of writing with my own hand. I hope my vision comes back.” She didn’t feel like voicing her concerns that they might kill her if it didn’t. Dead weight and all that. “The doctor that checked me out said it probably would. Though the headache might take another day or two, as well. It hurts.”
Autumn shrugged. “But that’s about it. It’s been…uneventful until today. Strange and uneventful. Is that all you need? Okay. Thanks.”
She was done talking about it. She didn’t want to think about it. Autumn just wanted to go home and get some sleep, and pretend the world wasn’t this hellish place it was.
