Autumn knew she probably shouldn't drink the cola. She stared down at the cup and tried not to think about what might be in it. It was just that she was so thirsty, and the cola was free.
It was always free, wasn't it? The cola at casinos. Offer you refreshments so you'd stay longer and be comfortable. No need to leave if they gave you stuff.
Though this place didn't have to do that. They simply didn't let you leave. But they did offer free soda-pop. It had to be soda-pop. Right? There was no way to fake that, was there?
Autumn just didn't know. And so, she just stood there by the soda machine, staring at the bubbling drink in her hand.

"I'm guessing you're not too taken with this gambling for our lives either, correct?" Matilda walked up to the girl and gave a tired smile. Pushing the button for her own soda, she popped open the can and took a sip before continuing.
"I'm Matilda. So, what exactly brought you into this mess? It was pure curiosity for me. I should have followed my gut when it told me this place was bad news, and now I may end up paying for it."

Autumn looked up with a bit of a start. Embarrassing, maybe, but she didn't jump so much as to lose any soda. "Ha, No. I'm not." She gave her own sad, tired smile back.
"I'm Autumn." She sighed. "I'm here because I was looking to scavenge up some nice things for the group I was living with." A bitter laugh. "You know, I was blind yesterday. Hit on the head and couldn't see. I thought this place was something of a blessing when I saw it the first time. My sight came back and this wonderful place showed up. And now..." She fidgeted at her collar and stared into her soda again.
She let out a very tired sigh. "I'm sorry you didn't listen to your gut. None of us deserve this, do we?"

Matilda gave a nod of her own. "Guess I got off lucky with an arm injury. It still feel a bit sore, but I can move it now." She rotated her right arm a bit to test it once more. It seemed so silly that she was worried about an arm before...
"No one deserves this. Being treated like animals. The ones running this casino are nothing but selfish monsters," she commented bitterly. "There was a boy earlier. They asked me which one I wanted to save. He reminded me of one of my students. I was a teacher, you know. He tried to run when they started untying him... you can imagine how that ended," she finished with a pained expression.

"Oh, that's good," her smile was a bit more real as she nodded at Matilda's arm. Even if their lives were on the line... It was the small things that made all of this bearable.
"Right? We are nothing but cattle here," Autumn agreed. Animals. Her gaze unfocused, even though she was watching Matilda speak. A boy.... Imagine how that ended. Autumn shuddered. "I can imagine it. I don't want to, but I can."
Her eyes focused again, looking at Matilda. "A teacher? One of my friend's from the prison was a teacher, too. I can't imagine what it's like to have seen...that happen to someone that reminds you of a student." Autumn had always been of the impression that the best teacher's were the one's that cared. Caring was something that would cause you a lot of pain in a place like this.
"Did...did you see what they did with him...after?" Autumn swallowed the lump growing in her throat. Images of what had been done to the girl she'd tried to save flashed across her mind. Autumn half wished she was crazy.

"And I'm glad your eyes got better," she added with a smile. It didn't quite reach her eyes, but she certainly tried.
"The whole thing makes me wonder whether they're even going to bother keeping their end of the bargain if we actually do manage to make the proper payment." She certainly wouldn't put it past the people behind this hoax to turn around and attempt to kill them anyways.
"When I decided to become a teacher, I always told myself that at the end of the day, there was a line that a teacher couldn't cross. Becoming attached leads to favoritism, which leads to bias. I swore to never let bias affect my teaching or who I was. I'm beginning to think it did, despite my best efforts," she whispered, taking another sip from her can.
"No... they led me out of the room too quickly to see anything after... gunning him down," she choked, fighting back the want to cry. Crying would solve nothing! "But considering the speech that was given prior, I have a pretty good idea of his fate."

"Thanks," Autumn said, the same sad smile still on her face.
She nodded, in full agreement with the idea that they were probably going to die here no matter what they did. She didn't like thinking that, she wanted to hope they had a chance, but it was hard.
"We're human," she said quietly. "Human, and I think that always tends towards emotions and some sort of bias." She gave an encouraging not to Matilda. "You were aware that bias exists...I'm sure that helped make you a good teacher." She really didn't know what else to say, but she did feel that was true.
Autumn shook her head. "I saw... there was a woman. They, um," she swirled the soda in her cup, "They cut her up. They packaged her, I think. Unless I was hallucinating." A chill ran down her spine. "No, I don't think they plan to let us leave."
She almost laughed. "The world goes to hell, zombies appear, and now this? Are we sure this isn't just a dream?"

"True... it is human nature to form an opinion. I like to think that I did a decent job, even if my students didn't always appreciate it," she smiled. How she wished she could go back to the times when grading papers and giving lectures was the bulk of her day.
She grimaced as the girl explained what she had seen. "God... I honestly don't think i would have been able to hold my stomach if that happened before me. I'm no stranger to blood, but that...," she paused, trying to find the right words to say and finishing lamely, "it's just so wrong. It somewhat makes me glad they carted me out before I could see more."
"Oh, if it were a dream, that would be absolutely wonderful."

"I'm sure you did," Autumn said. Matilda seemed nice and level headed, from the few minutes they'd been talking. Surely she had been good at her job.
Autumn sighed. "Yeah. I... I'm glad not everyone had to see things like that. All death is horrible. But other things..." She shuddered again, and then shook her head, trying to force images out of her mind again. Pretend everything was normal. She took a drink of her soda.
"Right? As a dream this place could be amazing. More fun that the prison I've been living in." She looked at Matilda again. "Have you had any luck with the cards?"

Autumn's mention of cards prompted her to dig through her bag, "I've managed to find a few." She pulled out the three cards she had managed to procure form her fights. "How about you?"

Sad sighs were plentiful that day. "Yeah. It's beyond shocking sometimes." Another shudder.
"One, myself," Autumn said. "Nice work on three. I've had more luck with potatoes, but I suppose that's okay." She had to laugh a little. "What a world we live in, to be excited over cards and potatoes."

"As long as luck shows up when you need it," Autumn said with a happy shrug.
"It's funny the things that used to matter, and what matter's now." She did have to chuckle at that. No more stress about being late to work because of traffic. Neither one existed anymore.
"I don't know. I guess I'll see if my group at the prison is still together, and continue helping them out. What about you? Any plans?"

"Oh! That sounds like a good time. Drinks and relaxation." Autumn couldn't help but laugh. "I imagine it will do you all good after this," she waved a hand indicating the casino. "Celebration will be in order when you get out. I think it's a great plan."
She eyed the jersey Matilda was wearing. "Ah. Okay. I had wondered about those. I've seen a few. I suppose it makes sense you all are from the University, and wearing jerseys. That's nice, though. A nice sense of... being a group. Someone to go home to."
Autumn had another sip of soda. "I hope we all make it out of here okay. I mean, we all have a chance, right?" Of course, their hosts could be lying, but Autumn didn't want to think about that again.
