Full Name: Asadaki Name Meaning: He Sacrifices
Nickname(s): Asa
Pack/Pride: ....... Rank: ..............[Misc]:
Mate: Ylva ....... Flings: N/A
Parent(s): ? x ? ....... Grandparent(s): (? x ?) & (? x ?)
Aunts/Uncles: Sibling(s): Dabiku
Offspring: Ainran, Kumo, Adjoa, Dabiku
Sexuality: Bisexual Companion(s): Seer?: No
Personality: Asadaki is EXTREMELY protective of his younger sister. Since he has rescued her from being sacrificed, he sees himself as her 'white knight' and worships her as though she were his Goddess. She is quite sacred to him. Asa is quite a gentleman, very knightly and good-natured, however he does have a darker side. Because he is so protective of his sister, he will dismiss, or VERY physically harm anyone who ever tries to touch her. And that's a literal touch... or possibly attempts to move within the same area where she resides... He sees everything in what can 'hurt' her, and what will not. This means Dabiku is always ahead in his mind, and he will always put her safety above his own. However, he is a gentleman, and very gracious and noble.
Or he was. Nearly murdered and left for dead by a conman who kidnapped his sister, Asa does not know what happened to her. Now he lives on, a broken creature, though slowly growing stronger with his family every day. ....... Quirks: (natural state), (nervous tick), (lie tell)
Biography: To every generation in the Marakoma Hyena Tribe were born a pair of twins, one dark and one light, and these twins were to be named Dabiku and Asadaki. Dabiku, the fair twin, was to be raised sheltered by her family, pure of mind, body, and soul. Asadaki, the dark twin, was to be made to be active in every way possible, to be familiar with every individual in the tribe, to participate in every ceremony and event; in such a way, Asadaki would come to represent the will of the tribe. These twins were the most important individuals in the entire tribe until the next set of twins came along. Even the twins themselves were raised with complete understanding of their purpose and fate; on the first full moon after the twins reached adolescence, Asadaki, in the name of all the Marakoma, would sacrifice his twin Dabiku to be the bride or groom to the fickle god Kiruhu. This and this alone would ensure the god would be content to continue bringing the herds back for the rainy season, in accordance with a prophecy made long in the tribe’s past. For countless generations this tradition continued flawlessly. Every Dabiku gave their life, and the herds continued to come and nourish the Marakoma.
Until Asa and Biku.
Asa was a perfect Asadaki in every way. He idolized his father, the previous Asadaki, for his dedication to both family and tribe. Asa wanted to be alike his father in every way, and so did everything asked of him with great enthusiasm, and came to be a friend to all. His sister Biku, in turn, was the picture of an ideal Dabiku. Quiet, obedient, and cheerful, she always listened to her mother, father, and brother. She learned all the tribe’s stories and songs, ate all the right foods, and never forgot to bathe in the sacred spring each sunrise. Not once did she complain about her lot in life, and not once did Asa question what he was to do.
Finally, their given night came. Dabiku was dressed in all the finest furs and flowers, decorated for her waiting groom. Asadaki donned the feather headdress of his father and was given the anointed blade. Only the two of them could perform the ceremony, the ceremony they’d been raised and trained for their entire lives; it would be disrespectful to the god to crowd the hill, and they could risk tainting the bride with their presence. And so when Asa arrived on the hill, his sister was already there waiting for him, practically gleaming in the moonlight. She sang to the stars in her warbling soprano, like a bird. Beaming, Asadaki stood back and watched her a while as she made her dance, her tail and garments trailing in the breeze. This was not part of the ceremony; this was just Biku, as he knew her.
From the corner of her silver eye she saw him, and came to a neat stop on all fours, perched upon the great flat rock where she would meet her groom. “Well come along then!” she called, her voice gilded with laughter.
Asa nodded once and approached. As was customary, she bowed her head low to him before rolling over, exposing her belly and throat. Asa bowed back, then turned his head to look down the hill, down on the sleeping Marakoma and their dens. This was for them, he had to remember. This was for all of them.
“I am ready,” Biku said, snapping Asa out of his daze. He blinked rapidly, then turned to face her.
Deep in his throat, he began to recite the chant to wake the god and call him to his new bride. It was all in old, archaic words that Asadaki didn’t really understand, but he’d been made to read them over and over again as long as he lived, so they came to him as readily as breathing.
Dabiku had only to lie and wait, which she did with a smile on her face, tail lashing.
Asadaki couldn’t help but watch her as he chanted; he’d always been watching over her, after all. It seemed to him she hadn’t changed since they were little, not a bit. She was always smiling, patient… The old words trickled to a stop in Asa’s mouth, and he drooped.
The perpetual smile fell off Biku’s face, and she tilted her head to the side. “What is wrong, Asadaki?” she asked. “Have you forgotten the spell?”
After a long pause chewing on his lip, a million thoughts at once trying to penetrate his mind, Asadaki shook his head. “No, no I’ve not,” he sighed. “It’s only… I’m just scared is all.”
But Dabiku just laughed at her brother, pressing a paw to her chest. “But why? This is our purpose, Asadaki. You can do it. I believe in you.” She grinned and laid herself out straight again, encouraging him on.
Oh, and she just didn’t understand at all. Asa couldn’t blame her; she lived her whole life under their mother’s watchful eye, hidden from the world and its ways. This, this was all she knew. And Asa, who knew the world in all its beauty and wonder, found pity rising to his throat, choking him. Dabiku would never know the world as he knew it. Certainly she’d never know what she was missing, but that didn’t make Asadaki feel any better. Why did it have to be them, just because they were born in a matching set? Why did this particular fate have to be theirs, out of all the fates in the wide world? Once again Asadaki turned his gaze on the sleeping tribe below them, and his eyes narrowed, his heart racing, all his muscles clenching. And all along the whole tribe had asked them to go along with this like there was nothing wrong with it at all. “It’s not fair,” Asa told the village below.
“Pardon?” said Biku, perking up a little.
Asadaki swiveled on his heels, turning to her. “It’s not fair!” he said. “You shouldn’t have to die! I shouldn’t have to kill you! We should have a choice!”
“But I do not mind,” said Dabiku, sitting up so she could lay a paw upon her brother’s shoulder and soothe him. “I was always ready for this night. I am happy to give my life if it means that you and our tribe can continue to live.”
And she was still smiling. How could she keep smiling like that in the face of death? No, Asadaki wasn’t going to have it. For once in their lives, they were going to have a choice. Taking his sister by the paw she laid on his shoulder, he pulled her up onto his back.
“Wait!” she cried, flailing, trying to wrestle her way back to the altar and the only meaning her life had ever had. “What are you doing? Asadaki!”
“Either someone else can wed Kiruhu, or they can find the herds themselves!” Asa secured his sister on his back before bolting off, forcing her to cling tight or fall off and hurt herself. He knew she’d never allow such a thing; a single bruise would make her impure. “There’s no way an entire pride’s fate can rest on just our shoulders! No way! That wouldn’t be fair!”
“But,” Dabiku breathed, huddling against her brother. “But… where will we go? What will we do?”
Asadaki continued to run at a steady clip, all the way downhill and then along the stream bank, into the forest. “Anywhere,” he said. “Anything. I want you to see the world, Dabiku. I don’t want to live without you.” And that was all it really came down to, wasn’t it? More than anything, more than the apparent foolishness of the ancient ritual or the sense of betrayal, Asadaki just didn’t know how to be anything else other than part of a set. Despite all his socialization, the only constant in his life was Dabiku.
And Dabiku would not argue with her brother, because she didn’t know how to do that either. She only sighed and laid against him, hung onto him for dear life.
And Asadaki kept running until his legs gave out beneath him.
And the Marakoma didn’t know how to exist without their traditions. As the rainy season rolled in, so did the paranoia. With each day that the herds did not show, another claw was pointed, another harsh word shouted. It didn’t take long for the panic to consume them. Enough blood was shed to stain their lands in a way that could be seen and smelled for miles.
Sure enough, the herds did not return to the Marakoma that year.

Personality: Morpheus is a quiet kind of hyena, who would much rather keep to himself and his learning than deal with other people. But when he does deal with others, it is always from a logical and pointed stand, where he rarely allows his emotions to get in the way. After all, emotions make a person weak and unobjective, as far as he's concerned. So looking at anything from the eyes of an unobjective person isn't really worth it, now is it? .......
