Welcome to the original birthplace of Meleager This journal is maintained by Lucky Stone Lissi Height: 15h 3" Meleager's Stats Skill level: 50Power: 15 pts Strength: 12 pts Intelligence: 12 pts Wisdom: 7 pts Courage: 12 pts Luck: 11 pts Speed: 11 pts Agility: 15 pts Adaptability: 13 pts Stamina: 14 pts
Personality: Meleager is hot-headed, short-tempered, and prone to making snap decisions. In battle, this serves him well; outside of such situations it can be a disadvantage. Once he has made a choice, he will stick with it. It takes a lot to change his mind, and he hates to admit that he is wrong. However, when his temper does not get the better of him, he is also an intelligent and quick-thinking stallion who can hold his own in most conversations. He is a proud stallion, with great confidence in his own abilities and in his herd, but he knows his faults – he will freely admit that tact and discretion are not his strong points, and will take advice from those he knows to be more skilled than he is. Meleager is somewhat superstitious, but respects talent, perseverance and courage in any creature. He is loyal to his herd above all else.
Location: The Hellene Territories – parts of D’ob and Yisi
Meleager's Tree is located in the Northern Quadrant

Vitals:Name: Meleager Gender: male Age: stallion Height: 15h 3" Position: Herdleader of the Hellenes Family: single, parents deceased, no living siblings, one living daughter MelanthoPersonality: 'impulsive' Alignment: lawful neutral Coloration: Dapple Grey - dappled dark and light grey body, dark brown eyes Likes: victory, power, being right, beautiful mares (and stallions? ^_~), the herd being content Dislikes: defeat, being wrong, cowards, traitors and liars Strengths:Meleager is physically powerful and an excellent warrior. He is of reasonable stature and considerable bulk, making him rather an imposing figure. For the most part, the other Hellenes look up to him and will follow his example. He is reasonably intelligent, quick-thinking, and makes good judgements in battle. He genuinely cares about the Hellenes and will act in what he believes to be their best interests. He knows his faults, and will take advice from those he trusts and knows to be more experienced than he is. Weaknesses:Meleager may know that he is short-tempered, but he does nothing to control it. He is prone to fits of rage, and can be entirely unreasonable at times. He tends to judge by first impressions, and he holds grudges. Although he will take advice, he hates to be proved wrong. He is not always able to accurately read others or judge their motives. His pride means that he is not much good at admitting when he is in the wrong, or at expressing affection towards others. He also harbours a hatred of black-coated creatures that he is unable to completely justify to himself; this only makes him hate them more. Base Stats:Power: 15 Strength: 12 Intelligence: 12 Wisdom: 7 Courage: 12 Luck: 11 Speed: 11 Agility: 15 Adaptability: 13 Stamina: 14

Lucky Stone Lissi The night was warm for the time of year. Perhaps that was why he couldn’t sleep. The dapple-grey stallion had wandered, restless, through the gentle hills at the borders of D’ob, far from most of his herd. Now he stood at the top of a small rise at the edge of the Hellene Territories, looking out across D’ob. He would have loved to extend the herd’s territory over that lush green land, but his tacticians had advised against it. He could simply have ignored them, but he knew that they were more skilled than he in such matters. Discretion was not exactly his strong point.
Meleager sighed and lowered his head to nibble at the grass. The wind rustled the leaves of the nearby copse, the cool air a welcome change in the still and muggy night. But above the whispering leaves, his sharp ears caught the distinctive sound of hooves, and the stallion was instantly on guard. He swung round towards the sound, certain that he spotted a flicker of movement amongst the tree trunks. “Show yourself!” the Reya called, with an impatient flick of his tails.
There was a moment of complete stillness, and he almost doubted that he’d seen anything – then the shadow in the trees stepped into the starlight.
Meleager’s eyes widened slightly, and he barely restrained the surge of fury that spread through him – the creature was black, black as the night sky above them. No wonder he hadn’t seen it earlier – save for a sprinkling of greyish spots across his chest, the Aeri stallion could have been a shadow himself.
The dark Nequus tilted his head to one side with an expression of polite enquiry. “Good evening.”
Meleager shifted position, pawing the ground in annoyance. How dare this dark stranger be so impudent? Had he no idea where he was? The grey stallion responded to his address with a long stare and then, in an icy tone, added, “Your evening is about to get a little less pleasant, dark one.”
The stranger laughed. “Says you. Now why don’t you back off, friend,” he continued with a distinctly unfriendly note in his voice, “and let a stallion enjoy his evening walk in peace.”
“Little chance of that, dark one, when your evening walk involves trespassing on my land and bringing your evil influence near my herd.” Meleager’s patience with the stallion was wearing thin. He would once have been content just to let him leave, but now the familiar desire for action was growing in his heart. The herd had too long been peaceful. It was unnatural – like the presence of this black Aeri, who would make the perfect first conquest of a new campaign.
“And who are you to claim the rights to this land?” the dark Nequus inquired.
Meleager let out a short laugh. “Truly, you are ignorant! This is the land of the Hellenes, the greatest warrior herd in all of Urin.” It was no idle boast, Meleager knew, and with a proud toss of his mane, he advanced on the black Aeri. “The Hellenes live here, under my leadership, and under my protection. I am Herdleader Meleager, and I will protect my people from the likes of you!” The stallion reared in challenge.
Behind him, the moon sailed out from behind a cloud, and he saw the Aeri’s eyes glint with malice. The black creature reared in return, one large hoof striking a glancing blow to the Reya’s shoulder. Meleager twisted away and dropped to the ground. He stepped back, making room to charge, keeping his eyes on the Aeri. The dark stallion, back on all four legs, was circling away from him. He edged closer to the shelter of the trees, but the movement did nothing to dissuade Meleager from attacking him.
The dappled stallion charged, turning as his opponent sidestepped, his horn scoring a long gash along the Aeri’s side. He pulled up sharply, finding his breaths coming quickly with the thrill of battle, and with the exertion of it. Almost instantaneously he swung round again, berating himself for becoming lazy and unfit in times of peace. The dark stranger seemed not to have noticed, too preoccupied with the pain in his side and the blood oozing from the wound. Meleager reared triumphantly, and came down with his hooves aimed at the other’s back.
The Aeri stumbled at the impact, and it was that movement that allowed him to escape what would have been certain defeat; he slipped sideways out from under the bulky stallion’s hooves, hauled himself to his feet again, and backed away.
Meleager advanced, bloodied horn lowered in readiness. “Not so cocky now, evil one,” he murmured, “not so ready to bring your bad luck on my herd. Prepare for your fate, dark one – this is the last time you will spread your evil influence across Urin.”
The black Aeri coughed, wincing as he lifted his head to look the Reya in the eye. “All this because I trespassed on your land – truly, the Hellenes are great warriors, to be so starved of opponents as to attack lone travellers,” he said, a note of bitter amusement in his voice.
The dappled stallion shook his head. “Were you merely a traveller, I would let you leave with a warning,” he replied, “but you are no innocent – a creature of such evil omen as you deserves to die. I must protect my people from your kind.”
Your daughter excepted? a small voice queried in the back of his mind, but he ignored it. Melantho was a different case entirely. Meleager stepped forward again, and the Aeri closed his silvery eyes, seemingly resigned. The grey stallion pawed the ground in annoyance. “Face me, coward,” he urged the other Nequus mockingly. “Face your fate like a Nequus who deserves an honourable death.”
There was a pause; the dark stallion didn’t respond, just stood still, waiting. Meleager moved closer, ready to rear and knock him to the ground. Possessed by rage, he didn’t notice the tensing of the Aeri’s muscles, the flicker of his eyelids – the first he knew of the stallion’s movement was as he was thrown backwards by the force of the taller Nequus barrelling into him. As soon as the dapple-grey stallion regained his balance, he turned in the direction the other had run – and saw nothing. The Aeri had vanished among the shadows he so resembled.
Meleager cursed. “Coward!” he called after the shadow, lashing out at a nearby tree in his anger. The sound and feel of splintering wood gave him a bitter kind of satisfaction, and his temper began to subside into simmering frustration. That stallion needed to be dealt with; he was a danger and a bad omen for the herd. His death was preferable, but Meleager would settle, if necessary, for him being far away. The dapple-grey stallion sighed, and with a last look around for any sight of the dark Aeri, he set off back to his herd at a swift gallop.
That stranger would be dealt with if it took him until midsummer. It was about time the Hellenes saw some action again.

Family: MelanthoMy firstborn daughter, and only living child, but she’s a self-made outcast. She left the herd after I tried to find her a mate. She doesn't like me. Herdmembers: CastorMy partner, and the Master Tactician. He’s very clever, and very good at what he does. He admits he’s not the best with people, but he has a good sense of humour, and he’s nice. And I love him <3 KallistoA pretty Ichsa civilian, new to the herd. I was impressed by her dedication to the Hellenes; despite being so new, she already knew she wanted to become a warrior. She was nice, although I'm not sure how much she was interested in me as a Nequus compared to as just a stallion or as Herdleader. IrisThe First Ambassador. Absolutely beautiful, and very clever, but she’s too formal. She doesn’t get close to people, and she has refused all my attempts to court her... not that that's relevant any more, anyway. I'm not that interested in her now. IgnatiusNew to the herd. he was described to me as odd, and he certainly is - he has scales, and spines, pointed teeth and a very strange tail. He's a good warrior and likeable despite the oddness. JocastaA tactician, quite new to it. She was helpful and answered my questions, and seemed competent at her job. Prospective mother of my children. Sanue Outlanders:ElsieA very short Bae mare with a strange accent. She seemed sweet, if not terribly bright. It was refreshing to meet someone with such a simple outlook on life. Unknown mare [ Siwa] A bae mare with a dark-green coat, black mane and tail, and a completely ditzy outlook. Didn't understand my questions, was annoying, showed no sign of apologising for interrupting my plans, but finally took the hint and left. One to remember - and avoid. Lucius Diego

I met the new Master Tactician today. Castor; a bright young stallion, which makes up for him being a rather unlucky crossbreed. He seems like he'll be good at his job. He gave me exactly the answer I expected when I hinted that I'd like to see more conflict.
However, we have similar views about how lasting this peace is likely to be, and about the complacency the herd my fall into.
He wanted to introduce me to his father. I wasn't busy, so, well, I went, and Diokles seems a good fellow, very proud of his son. The journey there and back helped get rid of some of the restlessness that was the product of talking about this damned peace.

That was a pleasant diversion from grazing. Kallisto; she's new to the herd, a pretty Ichsa with rings in her ear. I let her see that I was looking at her, and she did some looking of her own. She could be a potential mate.
She wants to join one of the six marks (lambda or gamma, she said), which I was surprised about since she's very new to the herd. Still, determination is a good thing, and I showed her to an appropriate tutor so that she could start training.
She's nice, and I think that mate potential or not, we could be friends.

Oh dear. No, really, oh dear. ...I seem to have acquired an unfortunate crush on Castor. Of all people. And he's male.
Well, actually, I can look at that in a slightly different light given the conversation we had today. See - he likes stallions. And I... well, I've always known that I like both, but I need an heir, so I never acted on it. Only he suggested, hypothetically of course, the possibility of one same sex couple finding a couple both of the opposite sex, and having foals with them. He said it could lead to breeding for good characteristics rather than love. It... seems like a very logical idea.
And he's nice. We agreed to be friends (makes this slightly more complicated), and not use the formal suffixes with each other in private. He has a sense of humour, and... I'm going to stop now, because I'm making a fool of myself.
Bother.

Some people are rather strange. Today, for instance, I met a Bae mare who called herself Elsie, who was short with a thick accent and appeared out of nowhere speaking to me as if she already knew me. Turned out she was lost, and wanted directions back to her part of D'ob.
At first though, I thought she might be a distraction for some kind of ambush by outlanders. Of course she wasn't, and I'm not sure whether I would have liked to see the action of an ambush, or been in trouble - since I was alone.
One thing she said to me that stood out was that if I didn't have enough free time, I should make some. I think I will actually try to do that in future. And go and watch the sunset sometime. Relax, instead of just hating this peace. And maybe... I won't watch the sunset alone.

This morning was a nightmare. Two stupid and very gay Ichsa apparently thought I could intervene with Iris or the other higher ranked ambassadors, who were being 'unfair', to get one of them a promotion. They just wouldn't listen! And the civilian one was fawning all over his lover, hanging on his every word - he had no pride at all. I hate that. He likes other stallions, but he's still a Hellene. Born one, or he would never have been accepted - he's weak.It doesn't have to be like that. Idiots.
If either of them had been a soldier, I would have challenged him and beaten him solidly - sadly, that was not the case, but I did find a rather good sparring partner. His name's Ignatius. He's new to the herd, but he seems like he'll fit in well. Apart from a slight dislike of taking orders. He said he'd get used to it - and I think I trust him, but it might be best to keep an eye on him anyway. I'll mention him to Castor at some point, and see what he thinks.
The other thing is - he's odd. Some kind of mutant. A Reya, but with one rather strange spiked tail... and he has scales, and spines in place of a mane. I have no idea what would make him like that, but he certainly knows how to use it to his advantage. he almost beat me - it was a draw in the end. He's interesting to spar with, and it's good practice fighting someone with such unusual skills.
