"It is an odd case, Meleager hallah," the Aeri said with a bob of his head. "He was found wandering near the eastern edge of the herdlands... muttering. He talks about hearing and seeing things, and... Some of the things he mutters about are... worrying. He seems to know a lot, sir, an awful lot so we brought him in. I don't think he'll be any trouble sir, he's quite thin and weak." With another bow of his head, the Aeri retreated and signaled to a pair of Bae to bring in the prisoner.

Diego was not in good shape, not in the least. His coat was scruffy and matted with mud, his short mane and tail were in as much disarray as was possible for such short hair, and he was indeed thin. His blues eyes, however, were bright and wild. The dapple grey stallion had sprung closer just then, and the Aeri had vanished from view, it had been as if he was in front of the Aeri, or as if he was the Aeri. One voice had got louder too; mad, mad, mad, dangerous, get rid of it, his problem now, mad.

Yes, yes, yes; he got the message; mad. How tiresome to hear it again and again. He was not mad, he could not be mad! He was golden Diego, too brilliant to lose his sharp sharp mind. Well if he wasn't mad, what was he? Eccentric? That was what upper class crazies got called. Eccentric. Lovely.

Snorting and tossing his head, the disheveled Jala walked forward. No matter how bad he might look, his walk was just fine: the haughty way he carried himself made the pair of Hellenes either side of him look more like honor guards than captors. "So!" he snorted and tossed his head violently, rather spoiling the proud bearing, as did the momentary rolling of his eyes, "I suppose you must be Meleager, herdleader of the Hellenes. I am Diego." He didn't bother to give the name of his herd, not point associating himself with them just now, the warrior herd might try to make him go bad. He would not go back to them mad - eccentric even - no he would not. He would die first. He had been trying to die, but this ugly lot had caught him on his way to Casa Tiner. It really was most inconvenient.

Meleager frowned at the Aeri spoke, nodding absentmindedly at the border scout as he left, intrigued by his words. He stepped forward in readiness to get a closer look at this stranger. He sounded strange indeed... but, at first glance, he appeared no more than an unfortunate wanderer, skinny and unkempt. Maybe that was a sign that he was mad; maybe it was just a sign that he'd been through some trouble - he could be in shock. Meleager supposed that wasn't so far from madness. As he was about to greet the muddy-gold stallion, the Jala stepped forward and made him pause.

He walked like he was a figure of authority, and that surprised the dappled Hellene. The the way he tossed his head, eyes rolling - that did look mad. Meleager frowned as the stallion greeted him, for he spoke with pride, too. "Welcome to the Hellene territories, siry-Diego. I am indeed the herdleader here. Might I inquire what you were doing in my lands?"

The words and tone were polite, but with an undercurrent of possible threat. And curiosity, Meleager would be the first to admit that.

Diego snorted again - unfortunate, eyes rolling - and regarded the larger stallion carefully. "I was not aware I had wandered over your border until those ruffians accosted me, siry-Meleager. They were most impolite." Shuffling his wings, he cast around and shook his head again... Oh great, and how he was seeing himself again, not exactly a pleasure given his current state. Closing his eyes didn't make his sight go away, so he opened them again, and snorted again.

"Look'k'tim," Diego hissed as the words assaulted his mind, "look'tim there. Juskill, mad, mad, juskillit." Another voices flared up then, and Diego stamped a hoof. "Drekit, drekit h'won again. I'llget'm, get'm good."

...And he was looking at Meleager again. He'd been muttering, hadn't he? Oh how humiliating, he was always more vulnerable to the voices when his eyes went strange. "As I was saying," he shook his head, trying and failing to clear out the constant stream of voices running through his mind, "as I was saying, I didn't come here on purpose; I was heading for Casa Tiner as it happens. I hope I've not caused you any problems."

Casa Tiner? Well that just made him even more strange. That and the fact that he had addressed Meleager as siry - that showed either ignorance, which couldn't be the case, a lack of respect, or a belief that they were on the same level. The herdleader preferred the last one - the gold coated Jala acted, if not for the twitching and eye-rolling, like he had power. All the more shame that he had come to this, Meleager decided, wondering what exacly was wrong with him.

He let the honorific slip without comment, and shook his head. "No, no problems to me - the border patrol may not agree, but I suppose you were as unusual a sight to them as you are to me. Certainly different from the business I usually get..." He trailed off, wary of offending the strange Nequus by comparison. "If you could not refer to the border patrol as 'ruffians' again, I'm sure they will be much more kind when they escort you away from here and set you back on your way. But I'd like to speak with you a little more, if you don't mind. Why were you going to Casa Tiner? There aren't many Nequus who would go there on a whim..."

Unless it was the whim of a madman. Meleager took a step or two closer to the other stallion, searching for some outward cause for his madness, but all he saw were symptoms, no obvious injuries. Maybe he was juat insane - that would be a shame, his conversation was rather civilised when he wasn't muttering.

Diego grinned lazily, of course he didn't think he was an equal, he knew; equal at the very least, probably superior. No need to say that though, he had enough sense not to make this stallion angry. "Sight-seeing. I've heard the sights are quite spectacular - what'did'y'say? - and some peace. It's very loud around here, don't you think?..." Hold on. What had prompted him to think that of course he was an equal? Just an educated guess? Strange. Very strange indeed.

"So have you ever been to Casa Tiner?" he asked, making smalltalk automatically as his brain frowned at itself. "Maybe you could suggest a few particular bits to go to. I hear the forest is lovely this time of year." Oh not again. Now he was seeing himself from behind. This was really, really annoying; bad enough being crazy, but being crazy and trying to control your body when your eyes were in the wrong place was even worse. Why had this happened to him? He was Diego, brilliant Diego, crazieness and jumping eyes should have happened to somebody else.

"Loud?" Meleager was puzzled. It was certainly not loud here; the guards and the few Nequus who liked to hang around and observe his meetings were all quiet, watching the strange gold stallion. "I don't think it's that loud... There are many Hellenes, but our territory is plenty big enough for them - there's no reason for it to be crowded."

And what had he said? He was going to Casa Tiner sightseeing? Meleager had indeed been there a couple of times, but he hadn't stayed long. There was nothing he liked about the place: it was cold, the mountains too steep to climb easily, and the forests too tangled to permit easy travel. He supposed there might have been some spectacular views, had there not been quite so much mist to obscure them. And it was so dark - dark all the time, he was amazed that anything could live there. Shaking his head, he looked up at Diego in puzzlement. "I have been, but I would not recommend it. The forest is dark, dull, and maze-like. Even in summer, I doubt any light touches the ground there. Further up I hear it gets so cold that snow stays on the mountaintops all year round. I myself did not care to continue my journey that far."

It had been both dull and disconcerting; he had been looking over his shoulder constantly while he was there. And yet he hadn't seen any other creature. "...Peace, though, peace you will find in plenty there, if no sights to see," the heardeader added half-heartedly. Casa Tiner would be a fine place for the Jala, if he was mad as he seemed. You would have to be mad to want to stay there for long.

Mad? Mad? How dare he! "I'm not mad, thank you so much," Diego said with a snort and a toss of his head, "I'm just suffering from a minor rebellion of the brain. I'm sure it will sort itself out presently, once everyone stops shouting in any case... Hold on," the golden stallion frowned, and shook himself as his vision snapped back to normal. "You... didn't actually say I was mad, did you?" No, his ears hadn't heard it. That had been a voice in his head, but it had been the bulky Reya's voice without a doubt. "You didn't say you were looking over your shoulder either," he added, scowl deepening. "I don't know why I thought you did. It sounded like you, but you didn't actually... didn't actually say it."

Voices. One of them was speaking the words that lay around what the herdleader was saying to him. Some of them... some of them wondered how long this crazy stallion was going to take up Meleager hallah's time. There were a multitude more, all jumbled and confused but he could pick these voices out, focus on them, think about them. Think. Thoughts. Thinking thoughts.

...Hearing thoughts?

Of course. Haha. Of course! Golden Diego was not mad, and nor was he suffering from brain rebellion. He was hearing thoughts, golden Diego was a Seer. Possibly. Part of him doubted, wondered if he was just trying to comfort himself... Perhaps Meleager's next reaction would tell him one way or the other. A Seer. That would explain so much, and was far more like something that should come to him. He had a brilliant mind, and now it was becoming even more brilliant. He should have suspected this before really, knowing himself to be as bright and sane as he was.
PostPosted: Mon Aug 31, 2009 9:21 am

The herdleader was taken aback by that; on the one hand the outburst was both strange and rude, on the other the strange stallion seemed calmer than he had previously. "No, I did not say you were mad, although I must admit I think you've been acting rather oddly. Neither is anybody shouting - at you or anyone. And I..."

Meleager frowned. "I'm not surprised you accused me of saying you were mad, but... what do you mean, looking over my shoulder? I didn't say anything about that..." Say it, no, but he had thought it. Just like he'd thought the stallion was mad... Well, maybe he was less mad than he looked. Maybe he was mad but also very clever, and very good at reading people. Maybe... The dappled Reya stomped one forehoof in frustration, exchanging glances with the guards on either side of Diego, warning them to be ready just in case he tried anything. What he might try, Meleager was not sure, but it was better to be safe than sorry when dealing with such an unpredictable possibly-mad stranger.

Diego glanced over his shoulder at the guards. He wasn't afraid of them, but he was aware that he wouldn't defeat them in a fight. He might be skilled at sparring, but his actual combat abilities were more or less untried. Every Nequus in this herd was warrior so far as he knew, well bar a few. He didn't want a fight. He didn't want to seem like a threat, which unfortunately he would if he let Meleager know what he was... Unless he convinced the stallion he wanted to be allies. Did he? Yes, it would be good if he could make his handrakai allies with this one. The Hellenes were powerful, and their territories were not so very far apart.

Diego shook his head as, for a moment, he saw himself through Meleager's eyes. It was getting easier to think like himself now: the voices were still loud, distracting, distressing but he knew he wasn't mad... or he thought he did anyway. He thought he thought he wasn't. Drek. His thoughts were still spinning like that, he was repeating himself almost, thinking silly phrases. It was probably to distract himself from the voices, that made as much sense as anything did right now.

"I'm not sure," he said after some moments of silence, keeping his voice low so only Meleager could hear him. "Maybe I am just mad. I don't think I am though... Alternatively - whats'he'saying? - sorry; the alternative is that the voices I'm hearing are your thoughts; your inner voices as it were. What do you think?" Meleager seemed a reasonably bright stallion, he would need to be to run this herd. He might be shiny gold Diego, but that didn't mean he couldn't value other people's opinions. If he actually wasn't mad, he didn't need to think quite so much of himself, right? He knew he was smart and brave and strong and all that, so he didn't need to keep reminding himself. If he really was a Seer and not crazy. Of course he wasn't crazy, that didn't make sense!... And magical powers did? Neither made much sense to him right now frankly.

Meleager leaned in closer to hear Diego, and his eyes widened at the suggestion the golden Jala made. "You think you're-!" he started, breaking off halfway through the sentence. Wait. Diego was speaking quietly; so should he. This - true or not - was not something for the guards to hear, not something to become a rumour around the herd. The herdleader beckoned Diego forward with a gesture of one wing, and finished his sentence in a softer voice, "- a Seer?"

It sounded just as mad as everything he'd been saying up 'til now, but Meleager had to admit that it might make a little more sense if considered properly. "It," he started uncertainly, "seems you may... seems you have some knowledge of what you shouldn't know, but whether that is hearing thoughts - I don't know." The dappled stallion shook his head. "I suppose you could test it. Can you tell me what I'm thinking of now?" he asked, his thoughts immediately jumping - of their own accord - to Castor.

Damn! He'd been intending to think of fruit, but, well, Castor was a nice thing to think of. And this Diego probably couldn't tell what he was thinking anyway, so what did it matter if he thought of his lover? No one would believe Diego if he said anything anyway - they all thought he was mad.

Diego blinked; this time it wasn't voices, he was seeing... not the world around him. A tall slim blue crossbreed whose name he somehow knew to be Castor... No he was seeing fruit? No, Castor... the herdleader's lover? Well, he hadn't thought him the type! It was refreshing though, some herds could be so uptight about that sort of thing. Knowing this particular accepted crossbreeds could have made him expect such an open attitude, but knowing what they had to say about black Nequus had made him less certain. He had a daughter who was black, all over save her golden eyes. Little Sabina, just a foal, her sister, all her sisters, her brother, her mother... He'd just left them all without a word. He had to go back. Once he had this under control, he would go back, and he would explain. He hoped they could forgive him.

"You were thinking about Castor," the golden Jala said, shaking himself out of worrying about his family. "He is... maybe a hand taller than you, blue with white markings, Ichsa wings, Reya tails, no horn. He's your lover too, isn't he? Oh, you were thinking about fruit for a moment there too, but mostly this Castor chap." In a moment he would know. He felt he already did, but right now he knew well how the mind could play tricks. If he had confirmation from Meleager, he would know for sure. Not mad, a Seer. If he really was, Estavan's herd was going to move up in the world before long. One way or another, this magic - if it really was magic - would benefit them.
PostPosted: Mon Aug 31, 2009 10:12 am

Meleager swallowed. "Quieter, please." Although he didn't think anyone had heard, he couldn't be too careful now... drek! So this stranger really could hear his thoughts. He supposed he'd have to be more careful about what he was thinking. "And I'd thank you if you kept that information to yourself," he added in an awkward murmur.

He hadn't really thought Diego would be able to do it, but he had. He could read others' thoughts. That power frightened Meleager slightly, but he pushed it away. Yes, it was the thing of legends, yes it was undeniably a great gift, but it didn't seem like Diego had a good grasp on it just yet. He doubted the golden Jala would be able to use it to any great advantage... not yet, anyway. In the future, however... he could be a fine ally to have.

With that in mind, Meleager smiled at the other stallion. He was thinking that he had a definite physical advantage over Diego, that if the other tried to say anything he shouldn't he would regret it, and he hoped the golden Jala picked that up as a background to his words. "It seems you can tell my thoughts... if this is real, it is a great gift, and I would offer you any hospitality the Hellenes can give, and help along your way. I know nothing of your background, but many would be grateful to have the Hellenes as allies, and we would be pleased to count you amongst ours."

Deigo nodded slowly; not a chance he was getting into a fight with this one. Maybe once he got a grip on his powers they'd be of use to him in a fight but right now he was in no state to do battle. Come to that, even if he was fit and thought he could win fighting Meleager would be foolish. A herd as small as his could never normally expect to be offered alliance with a herd like the Hellenes.

"I shan't tell a soul," he said softly with a slight smile, "you're quite a lucky stallion though; he's handsome... I think for now I still need to get away, but maybe not all the way to the ice mountains. The edges of your territory are by the forest, aren't they? if I could stay there a while, where it's less populated I might be able to get a grip on these powers. I would be grateful for the chance to be isolated but safe, and my herd would be more than grateful to be counted an ally of yours. We are small... but it seems that these days we have something unique going for us. If your herd is willing to help protect us should anyone try to take our lands, I would be happy to lend you my abilities when you have need of such a mind reader."

Somehow Diego had a feeling that his father at least would be swift to forgive him for vanishing if he managed to make a friend of the Helenes. Warrior herd of the northeast, friendly to Estavan's proud but small and decidedly nonmilitary herd; even their border guards were just big lads who could calm down an average disagreement. Should someone seriously try to take over their lands, they wouldn't stand a chance. Not alone at any rate.
PostPosted: Mon Aug 31, 2009 10:37 am

That sounded reasonable; a small herd was unlikely to be a target for any enemy that the Hellenes couldn't easily deal with. If they ever did come into some trouble, it would provide a welcome chance for some of the newer soldiers to get some practical experience. At the same time, he couldn't think of a time where he might be in need of a mind reader, but for the time being he would much rather be on the same side as Diego that against him. That settled in his mind, the herdleader nodded slowly. "Agreed. That sounds most satisfactory."

He chose to ignore the comment about Castor, but let a little of his relief out in the smile he turned on the gold coated stallion. "I can have one of the guards or scouts direct you to the forest border, if you wish, and you will be left alone there as long as you desire. The usual scouting parties will pass every so often, of course," - because I'm still going to want to keep an eye on you - "but I imagine that won't be a problem. You'll need some company to practice on, yes?"

He hoped the Jala wouldn't get any ideas about disappearing as soon as he was left alone. Hopefully he was telling the truth about his herd, and the promise of an alliance would be enough to keep him on the sensible path. Meleager made a mental note to find out more about Diego's origins, and to investigate them if possible.

Good, he had hoped Meleager would be satisfied; a golden opportunity that surely a reasonable Reya could not ignore, having a Seer as an ally would surely be beneficial to him and his herd... He was doing that strange alliteration thing again, hopefully he would stop before he started doing out loud and managed to embarrass himself. He did not enjoy being embarrassed.

"Good," he said aloud, nodding to Meleager's words, "I would appreciate being shown the way, and I understand that you need to keep an eye on me. I know I wouldn't be too comfortable if somebody who could read minds waltzed into my herdlands. It's a good opportunity, but a risk as well." He had no reason to betray these people though, he would have to be a damn fool to do so. Whatever harm he did them, they could return tenfold against his own herd; you didn't need to be a Seer to work that one out, and he was pretty confident that Meleager would know he knew it. The Reya had reason to be cautious of him, but not outright suspicious.
