These were the Hellene territories; he knew it well enough. He did not, however, have any patience for the fact that a crowd of hyper-masculine muscle-heads thought they owned the place. This was where he currently wished to be, and so this was where he was. It wasn't as though they were short of food or water; he was not eating the last of the sweet grass-flowers that a starving foal might long to nibble on. This place was verdant, the weather was good and he had no intention of piking a fight. If anyone had an issue with his presence, well, they were quite welcome to take it up with him.

Lucius tore up another mouthful of grass and chewed it slowly. He would almost be glad of an altercation; since the loss of his mate and daughter his life ad been exceedingly dull. There was only so long you could train your body every day, and he already pushed that to the limits. What had he done with spare time before he had met Lydia? He hardly remembered; just kicked around and traveled he supposed. He was older now though, he had seen most of what the world had to offer...

And so here he was, wandering the territory of a herd he knew hated and feared those with black coats. His wonderfully morbid accouterments would of course only make matters worse. He hoped. Anything for a break in the monotony. Smirking a little to himself, the well-muscled stallion continued to graze; it was only a matter of time before someone spotted him.

This was supposed to be a routine border patrol - Meleager had come along just for a break, to see the outer limits of his land for once - but that was distinctly a dark-coated, and unfamiliar, Nequus below them. The herdleader frowned. There were a few unfortunates with darker coats among the herd, but he knew all of them by sight and by name, and this Aeri was none of them. He glanced back over his shoulder at the rest of the patrol. Half a dozen in total, all competent soldiers, if not the most experienced bunch. They were spread out, currently, but their nominal leader was close by. He waved the tall stallion over, pointing out the stallion below with a silent flick of his tail.

The other looked worried, but Meleager shook his head. "I'll deal with this. You gather the others, and land, in case back up is necessary." Without waiting for the nod of acquiescence, he began to drop.

He landed well out of attacking range of the dark stallion, but made no attempt at concealment as he walked closer. The Aeri looked a tough one - rather scary-looking, with that colouring and those bones he wore - the stuff of childish nightmares. Not his nightmares though. The bulky grey halted a short distance away from him, body language neutral for now, and called out, "You are not welcome here, stranger."

Lucius raised his head and regarded the dappled Reya steadily as he finished his mouthful in an unhurried fashion. "Really," he said placidly, looking the other stallion down and further down thanks to his advantage in height, "how surprising. I had been expecting a warm welcome and an honour guard you know. Still, I suppose things never turn out quite the way you imagine, do they?"

He was a fine specimen this Reya. Hardly a colt, but could be any age in his prime; could be older or younger than Lucius himself was. Good muscles, clean coat, bright eyes and a wicked looking horn. He was clearly in some position of authority or he wouldn't have been the one to come down here and pass on the warm welcome.

"In any case," Lucius smiled slightly, "let us be strangers not longer. I am Lucius, and I care not a stick whether or not you are glad of my presence, hellene." There were others circling above... a patrol? Had to be. Humm. Not excellent odds by the numbers, but he doubted all of them would be as unruffled by his appearance as this one was. Certainly whatever happened next would be interesting. Possibly terminally so for one or two of this dappled creature's retinue if it came to blows. Still, Luius Aeri would not weep for anyone foolish enough to tangle with him.

So he was one for sarcasm. Meleager was not impressed; his expression darkened to a frown. The dark stallion's attitude and expression were irritating. He was actually smiling. "Not 'hellene'," said, resisting the urge to spit the words at the other stallion. "Meleager-hallah, herdleader and lord of these lands."

He paused, muscles tensing. This wasn't looking good; why did he have the feeling that this Lucius was going to kick up a fuss and refuse to leave without a fight? Not that that was a problem; Meleager would have taken him on alone, and was confident of victory with the patrol to back him up. They could use the experience, actually.

He heard the sound of wingbeats and muttering voices, some distance behind him, and surmised that they had landed. Good. They formed a more impressive reinforcement on the ground and in closer proximity. The herdleader himself took a step closer to the trespasser, going through the motions of checking every muscle of his body in preparation for battle. It was almost subconscious; but it might not yet be needed.

"I ask you once more, Lucius. Leave these lands and my herd. If you cease to trouble us, we will bother you no further." It was only fair. Perhaps he was not aware of the beliefs held amongst the Hellenes.

Lucius looked him down and further down again. "Oh? You're the heardleader are you? I had expected something more. Still, given your superstitious and thoroughly hypocritical beliefs I suppose I shouldn't have. 'No Nequus shall think himself above another because of his breed'," he quoted, running underwhelmed eyes over the patrol as they landed. "No Nequus shall discount a mare for being a mare, nor a stallion for being a stallion'. With all those noble and forward-thinking sentiments running around I find it a wonder that you are so ignorant as to hate black coated Nequus. Besides," he smiled again, "didn't I hear that you had a black daughter? Melantho, am I correct?"

He had never met the mare himself, but he did know her little Rit brother. Still, Meleager didn't need to know that. It was far more fun to pretend he's picked the knowledge up elsewhere.

"In any case," Lucius continued smoothly, shuffling his wings in a relaxed manner. "If you wish to see me off, do feel free to try. Goodness, with so many fine warriors supporting you I am sure you cannot fail to win the day, oh noble Meleager of Handrakai Hellene. Please. Give the order for them to charge and then watch from behind, or whatever it is you usually do." By the look of him this one led from the front, but Lucius was in the mood to insult, to point out how little honour there was in defeating a foe six to one. Even six to one it would hardly be a clean win. He had no intention of making this easy for the bigoted prig.

That was just downright rude. Meleager found himself torn between feeling anger at Lucius' words and unsettled at his knowledge of the herd - and of Melantho. The anger was winning, and he began to paw at the ground with one forehoof. Lucius was deliberately antagonising him, he knew that. He also didn't care.

"Melantho," he said through gritted teeth, "could not abide by the customs of this herd and live her life the way it was meant to be. She left. She had more sense than you. Now," he continued, shifting to stand foursquare on his hooves, facing the other head on. A twitch of his tails, a flick of a wing signalled to the patrol his intentions, and that they should stay put. For now. He had no idea how strong this Licius would turn out to be. "If you insist..."

A straightforward charge, head down, but with no real intention to attack. The bulky Reya stopped himself just short of the Aeri and reared at him. A split second later, his large hooves came crashing down on where the dark stallion's body ought to be.

Ah. At long last; something interesting. Lucius moved aside a little, almost enough to avoid the blow. Almost. As it was, the dappled stallion's forehooves clattered against the shoulder of Lucius' bone armor. It jarred both of them, but it had been a calculated move and the Aeri suspected that Meleager had come off worse. Giving a short laugh, he lashed out at the Reya and caught the heardleader a glancing blow on the chest with one forehoof. At least it seemed it would have a little time fore fun before Meleager decided to call for his reinforcements.

Having dodged back to evade the worst of the kick, Meleager was then free to lower his horn and charge again. The hellene made a slash at throat level with his vicious weapon, and Lucius lent back. The horn caught him a little, sliced through the skin to draw blood but it was hardly a worrying blow. Chuckling again, the boned Aeri pranced backward before spinning around and kicking out at Meleager with his back hooves. He hadn't had this much fun in quite some time.
PostPosted: Fri Apr 10, 2009 3:36 pm

That kick caught Meleager hard in the chest. He hadn't been expecting it at all, and he couldn't move in time to avoid it completely. It hurt - but not enough to indicate serious damage. He stumbled back a few steps, catching his breath. Lucius was probably, as much as it galled him to admit it, stronger and faster than Meleager himself. Worse, though...

...the other stallion was actually enjoying this. He was still chuckling as he turned back and advanced on Meleager again, this time kicking out with his front hooves at any body part he could reach. Most blows missed, but Meleager had to step backwards to avoid them. He was retreating, and he hated it, even if it did bring him closer to back-up. He didn't need that yet.

The herdleader halted for a moment, gathering himself under the barrage of blows. A couple hit, on his shoulder and chest, but he ignored the brief pain and leapt forward, throwing his full weight into a couple of kicks at the dark stallion's chest.

One of the kicks hit him, the next got tangled with his own offensive against the Reya. Both of them nearly fell, struggling to unknot their legs. When they managed it, Lucius danced backwards and tossed his head contemptuously. Was this all? He hadn't even got started yet! This was the leader of the 'warrior herd'? Ha! He should begin a herd of his own and bathe the grass in the blood of inferior Nequus. He hated to see the inferior rule. It was not their right; that privilege and responsibility ought to be reserved for the truly strong. For people like him.

"Well this is a pleasant diversion," Lucius said lazily as he watched for the dappled Reya's next move. "It would be a lot more interesting for me if you called in one or two of your fine recruits. Right now, Meleager, I am just going through the motions. I could pummel you in my sleep, lord warrior, so please do make this a little more challenging for me. You are outclassed, and you know it. Get over yourself and stop pretending!" How many could he take at once? Three? Four?... That would be a push. When numbers were that much against you things were bad no matter what your skill, no matter what their incompetence. Humm. He was going to come out of this with one or two aches, it seemed. Well, at least he would get some excitement out of the day, he supposed.
PostPosted: Fri Apr 10, 2009 4:06 pm

Well, that was undignified. Partially successful though; it seemed to have gained him a break, for now. Meleager took the opportunity for a brief glance over his shoulder at the patrol. They had moved no closer, but even at this distance they looked concerned. They probably weren't close enough to hear what was passing between the two, either. He himself was only half listening. The Aeri's words would make him angry, he knew that, whatever they precisely were. His tone was lazy and disrespectful, and Meleager was determined to prove him wrong.

Lucius was heavier, certainly, being taller than Meleager and as well-muscled. He was powerful, as his kicks had shown - those bruises would ache for days. And he was fast, too, but Meleager was certain that that was the area where they were more closely matched. This was where tactics came in, and in this situation, it was best not to get too close to his opponent. It was, however, safe to circle - the rest of the patrol blocked the way deeper into the herdlands, and one Nequus would not get past them, even this one.

Meleager sidestepped with care, moving slowly. All he needed was a chance to find a gap in the other's defences. Those bones made it more complicated, but he good still get in a quick slash to the flank and then away. If he had the opportunity...

"You seem to underestimate me, Lucius," he said calmly. "It's not quite at that stage yet. My troops will only need to finish you off once you've seen the best of me," he finished with a mirthless grin.

The black stallion nodded almost affably, watching Meleager carefully as the Reya searched for a chance to attack. "I am sure I shall be amazed, Meleager... You know, I have wanted to ask this of you ever since I heard of your handrakai," Lucius said thoughtfully, "I suppose I may as well take the opportunity now while you're here. The prejudice of many folk against crossbreeds is based by and large on the erratic behavior of a very few of them. Your herd, thanks to its origins, has overcome the foolish notion that all crosses are mad or evil or both. However, so far as I have been able to gather, your herd's hatred of black Nequus stems from the black Bae who used to be at large in the world; the foal killers. Nobody has heard of Attia Shade or Brakrin for many a turn of the seasons, and yet your hatred remains..."

Frowning, Lucius shook his head slightly. "Given your willingness to accept that crosses are alright based on the proof before your eyes, why do you cling to your hate of those coloured like myself? Is it truly mere superstition, or are you a very clever stallion who knows that everybody needs good enemy?" It was true; having enemies kept you tough, alert, kept you striving to always best them. Lucius pawed at the ground lightly, letting Meleager know that taking thinking time and initiating further conversation didn't mean he was off guard. He had no intention of getting spitted because he had allowed himself to be distracted by his own musings.

"The black Nequus I have known have brought misfortune upon the herd," Meleager said shortly. And the crossbreeds, exactly the opposite... "And aren't you just a prime example of that?" he remarked.

Damn him. Meleager didn't have the time to think about why right now. Black-coated or not, this Lucius was a nuisance, and needed to be got rid of. His coat was no longer the issue. In any case, such things were not suited to discussion on a battlefield, or by warriors. It was time to get back to business. A flick and twist of the dappled Reya's tails told the patrol to be ready. He waited until he was sure they were in position - spread out behind him to block all flight into the herdlands, and one flying tight circles above - and only then made his move.

It was the slightest of chances, but it was enough. The black stallion's guard was almost impenetrable, but he thought he had a seen an optimum angle of attack. The bulky grey pawed at the ground impatiently, opened his mouth to speak, and then charged. Horn down, he aimed for a slash along Lucius' flank. Behind him, the other four soldiers rushed in.

It was the slash of Meleager's horn or the stab of an Ichsa's. He opted for the slash; puncture wounds were dangerous. Twisting around, he managed to dodge the long sharp weapon, and then kicked the slender stallion in the side of the face. Meleager's strike was painful, made him grimace but the wound did not end up as long as it might have; the Reya's horn caught on a blood red rib and Lucius quickly jerked away. He met the offensive of what looked to him like an Aeri cross swiftly, dodging the intended blow to his face and kicking the large mare viciously in the knee.

She went down, and the Ichsa seemed to be out of action too although Lucius could not see him at present. That left Meleager and two other immediate threats, plus the one in the air. Not good odds. Snorting, Lucius kicked out at one of the warriors and began to move backwards, keeping his eyes moving rapidly from one assailant to the next. Well, this certainly was breaking the monotony. He realized belatedly that allowing himself to be engaged by all of these hellenes was foolish. They might not wish to let him live. He might might escape, but possibly only with serious injuries.

Ugh, melee fighting. Ugly, messy, and often dishourable... as this was. Five on one, even when the one was as strong a fighter as Lucius, was impossible odds. Not to mention the Bae scout still in the air, who would up those odds to six if she were to land. Meleager sighed, exchanging glances with the patrol leader. This was the closest to battle he'd been in a long time, but it wasn't the sort of fight he enjoyed.

Off to one side, he heard the tall Aeri snapping orders at the two Hellenes who had been taken out by Lucius' attacks, telling them to move back. The herdleader made a mental note of that; he was bright, even if some of his soldiers were rather inept. Still, he supposed, it was valuable experience for them all.

With those two out of the way and feeling sorry for themselves, the three remaining closed in on the boned Aeri: the bulky dappled herdleader, Aeri patrol leader, and horned Jala-cross. Lucius wasn't attacking any more, but Meleager wasn't in the mood for talk, and he wasn't going to give him the opportunity to regroup. At a nod from him, the trio charged once more. One for the throat, one with forelegs, and one with rear...

He ducked, deflecting the blow that had been aimed for his throat with the blood-red bone masked that covered his face. At the same moment he lashed out with his forehooves to meet the blow aimed for his legs; the impact jarred painfully. There wasn't much he could do about the hooves coming down towards his back, but perhaps the hit was less brutal than it would have been if his aggressor hadn't needed to avoid slamming down on his armour.

This was getting stupid; he was going to get himself seriously injured if he didn't break away pretty soon.

Snorting, Lucius lashed out backwards with a vicious double-hoofed kick and felt a satisfying crunch as he struck something. Another blow landed on his left shoulder, but he was able to feint around one coming in from the other side. The warrior behind him still didn't seem to have recovered from the kick he'd just dealt. Right; this seemed like a good juncture in which to make a strategic withdrawal. Well, alright, to run as fast as he could away from this pack of dishonorable, rock-headed idiots.

He wheeled about, kicking out with his back legs to keep the heardleader and his remaining warrior back for long enough to gather himself and take off at a dead sprint. He was sore, annoyed at the drek-headed Hellenes, but he had to admit that this interlude had at least broken the monotony a little. Laughing to himself, Lucius raced onward.
