Ah, this was more like it. The sun was shining, the area was quiet, and there was shade nearby for when the day got too hot. It was almost midday; Meleager’s morning had been taken up with business, and he had only just found time to himself. Time to eat had also been somewhat lacking, and so the herdleader had taken this opportunity to graze, in an area of D’ob relatively free of herdmembers who might bother him.

Free of distractions, the stallion was surprised to find that his mind drifted not back to the morning’s business, or to other matters concerning the herd, but to a couple of days previously – and a certain Ichsa mare. Kallisto… He wondered how she was getting on with her training. Of course, she’d only had a couple of days yet. She probably wasn’t even settled in. When a little more time had passed, he would find an excuse to watch the training, he decided, and happen to watch her group.

The dappled Reya sighed, chewing thoughtfully. So he was slightly preoccupied with her lately. Well, that made sense. She was a pretty mare, intelligent, friendly, and now she was going to become a warrior. There was nothing wrong with being attracted to her – she had even shown signs of interest in him. All in all, she was as close to perfect as was realistically possible. So why was this bothering him?

Meleager shook his head and took another mouthful of grass. This was going to take some time to figure out – and he’d best do that before he spoke to Kallisto again.

He was not a warrior, and did not pretend to be but that was no excuse to be lazy. Exercise, he had always found, kept the mind sharp, and it was for this reason that Castor was cantering steadily over the rich green grass. His long legs carried him at quite a pace, and he had to admit to being a bit proud of that. It was nice to be good at something physical even if his job didn’t require it of him. Still, despite being fast and quite fit, the Master Tactician was beginning to tire; the sun was quite hot and he’d come quite some way already. Time, he felt, to seek out a stream or failing that a nice juicy fruit.

This in mind, the crossbreed slowed to a walk and scanned his surroundings. Not water source, but just over there was a sweet-water tree. The pale-coated stallion made a beeline for it; the sight of the familiar plant had made him realize just how thirsty he’d become. Upon reaching it, the tall Nequus discovered that all of the fruits on the lower branches had already been plucked. Fortunately however, this was not an issue for him. Setting his eyes on the closest pink-skinned treat, Castor rose up on his hind legs and closed his teeth about the bottom of the vaguely cylindrical fruit before dropping back on all fours and pulling it down with him.

It was good, Castor decided as he bit the end off and chewed at the juicy flesh, to be very tall. About half way through this mouthful however, the blue-eyed stallion noted the detail of his immediate environment that he had missed on his initial scan.

“ ‘elegah alla,” he tried. On realizing that his attempt to speak had failed somewhat, the crossbreed swallowed his mouthful and gave his superior a slightly rueful smile. “Meleager hallah,” hurrah, success, “how are you today?” Hopefully the herdleader wouldn’t laugh at him; he disliked being laughed at.

He had been wondering when Castor would notice him. Smirking slightly, the grey Reya dipped his head briefly in greeting as he turned to the tactician. “Castor-hellene. I’m well, thank you. And you?” Meleager smiled, a little surprised to find that he didn’t mind the intrusion on his solitude. “Nice fruit?” he added, his smile widening to a grin with a hint of good-natured teasing in it. Such a thing could happen to anyone, but it was undoubtedly amusing.

Now he thought about it, perhaps the Ichsa-winged tactician turning up was fate – it was certainly something that could be made use of. He had no idea how much experience the younger stallion had with mares – he was certainly attractive enough to gain their interest – but in any case he was intelligent, and could perhaps offer a useful insight into the situation. He might feel a fool asking advice from Castor, but if he was honest with himself he felt a bit of a fool already for not knowing what to do.

Perhaps he was just out of practice. He hadn’t been in this sort of situation since… well, discounting Iris, who he had accepted as the one he would never quite manage to get over – since Leto. Helen’s mother had been an impulse and a mistake; their relationship had never been based on more than desire, until they had had a foal. And when she was gone… Well, the resulting mess had made him determined not to get into such a situation again. If he was going to go about finding a mate, he needed to get it right.

For a moment, Castor smiled past the dappled stallion’s left ear. Then he remembered the bit about eye contact and smiled at his superior properly. “I am well thank you,” he said with a small nod, “and it is a nice fruit.” Now it was the crossbreed’s turn to smirk just a little. “Would you like me to get one down for you, Meleager hallah?”

He didn’t think the other stallion would take offense at the small jibe; it wasn’t as if the herdleader was a small Reya by any stretched of the imagination, he just didn’t have the advantage of Aeri blood, that was all.

Still, perhaps he might be wrong, people had never really been his strong suit. Hopefully he wasn’t; he’d so recently made a good impression on the horned Nequus that messing it up would be most embarrassing. Still, it had been a very small joke. Unless Meleager had an inexplicable sore spot about not being seventeen hands high, he ought to be alright.

The shorter grey stallion had in fact been eyeing up the fruit when he had first spotted the tree, but resigned himself to the fact that he wasn’t going to get to taste it. Now, a little surprised by Castor’s offer, and the fact that he’d made a joke – he hadn’t expected that of the young tactician – Meleager grinned and nodded. "If you would." He had no problem with the jibe at his height; he was taller than most Reya, he knew it, and in any case he had no reason to be sensitive about it. Perhaps he was too proud, the dappled stallion mused briefly, but he knew that his physique was enviable. He was well-muscled and had the power to go with it, tall for his breed, and handsome. There were few jibes that would really have hit a sore spot.

There was really only one thing guaranteed to make the herdleader angry, and that was nothing physical. No, just a mention of his daughters. Meleager knew his temper was his weakness, but it was also a strength. It served him well in battle, and since it had its advantages he saw no reason to try to change. He had the right to get angry about Melantho – after what she’d done… But Castor was certainly intelligent enough to avoid that situation.

Meleager crossed into the shade beneath the sweet-water tree, looking up at the plump fruits. They hung just out of his reach. Indeed, it was useful to have an Aeri around, even if Castor was only half-blooded. He had the height, and that was what counted.

The pale-blue stallion smiled, he had guessed right, and turned away to search for a tasty looking fruit. Before too long, a good specimen caught his eye and the tendril-winged stallion moved underneath it. Once he judged himself to be in a prime position, it was a little higher up than his had been so positioning was more important, the tactician rose up on his hind legs again. Spreading out his tendril wings for balance, Castor stretched his neck up towards the pink thing and closed his teeth around the bottom. Fortunately it came away just as easily as his had, apparently he’d managed to pick two that were just ripe, and the tall Nequus was able to drop back onto all fours.

Placing the thirst-quenching fruit before Meleager, Castor smiled once more before moving back to his own fruit and carrying it a little closer to the herdleader; close enough for proper conversation without invading any personal space bubbles.

“Mine’s just right,” the tall stallion commented as he lowered his head in order to take another bite, “I hope yours is too.”

The idea of pleasing Meleager pleased him. Awkwardly worded perhaps, but it did. Not only was it a good idea to be liked by the stallion in charge, he was more likely to listen to advice and such, but just pleasing him was... no not pleasing, pleasing had been used enough. Desirable. Ah, yes that was definitely a better word.

Pleasing Meleager was desirable.

Pleasing; Meleager was desirable.

Oh the different ways to form sentences in one’s head. Smiling to himself again, the white-marked stallion raised his eyes from eating briefly to take a subtle look at the well-made herdleader. Definitely both pleasing and desirable. He wasn’t sure of the Reya’s character as yet, but the brown-eyed creature seemed quite intelligent which was a good start, and it would be pleasant and desirable to be in his company often even if pleasant demeanor was not added to desirable exterior.

Chuckling internally at his twisting about of words, Castor took another bite of his fruit and chewed contentedly.

Meleager found himself watching the pale-coated crossbreed as he stretched up to get the fruit. Castor was more graceful than he had expected, given his height and slim build. His attention was taken by the task of obtaining the pink fruit, and the muscled Reya felt no shame in taking the opportunity to look him over appreciatively, his gaze lingering for a moment on the lines of the crossbreed’s body. He had been wrong in his earlier assessment, he concluded – although not classically attractive by Hellene standards, since they tended towards liking muscles, the master tactician was still a rather good-looking Nequus. And in any case he had brains, which was attractive in itself. The older stallion would be surprised if he was not experienced in relationship matters.

As Castor dropped back down with the fruit, Meleager blinked and pretended that he hadn’t been staring just a little. There was nothing wrong with that, but it might have been slightly awkward if the Ichsa-winged stallion had noticed. Flicking his tails absentmindedly, the stallion bent down to take a bite of the fruit. It was indeed good, and he nodded at his companion’s comment, swallowing and looking up to reply. “It is. You made a good choice,” he added with a smile.

As he took another bite, the grey stallion thought back to what he had originally intended to ask Castor about. Ah yes. Kallisto. He chewed slowly, framing a sentence ion his mind, choosing his words carefully. “Castor,” he began, looking up at the other Hellene after swallowing his mouthful of the pink fruit, “Did I mention when we spoke last that I was thinking of looking for a mate? Well… there have been certain developments.”
PostPosted: Fri Apr 25, 2008 3:04 pm

Castor chewed his way slowly through the bite he had just taken of the orange-fleshed fruit, casting his mind back to their previous conversation as he did so. “I don’t recall you bringing it up,” the pale stallion said one he had swallowed, raising his head and looking first past Meleager and then at him a moment later. “I’m glad to hear that there have been developments though... assuming they’re good ones?”

From the context it sounded like there was good news, but the herdleader was somewhat hesitant in his speech. Castor frowned slightly to himself, trying to work out why that might be. The only answer he could come up with was that the news wasn’t good, but he’d already decided that it probably was. People were so confusing sometimes.

“What sort of developments?” the crossbreed asked after a few moments of silence, deciding that a question such as this would probably get him an answer that would solve his confusion.

"Hmm." Meleager noticed the slightly hesitant eye contact; was he making Castor uncomfortable? He wasn't sure, but he couldn't really change the subject now. "Good... well." He paused, wondering if there was a way he could put across his concerns without sounding or feeling a complete fool. "I met someone - an Ichsa mare named Kallisto. She's new to the Hellenes, and she's just started army training. Since I put her in touch with a tutor." He smiled, and then continued a little less certainly. "She seemed interested - but I'm not sure if she was genuine or just being a flirt. Being new, she might have... just wanted to catch my attention, or something. I'm not sure."

The Reya stallion paused, smiling somewhat embarrassedly at the tactician. "I know it's not your area of expertise, but you are a tactician - what would you do if you were new and happened to meet the herdleader?"

There. That was probably the least awkward way of putting it. He hoped he didn't make the younger Nequus too uncomfortable; he was asking in a friendly capacity not an official one, although he supposed him acquiring an heir might count as herd business. Meleager wasn't entirely sure why he had chosen to ask Castor's advice, other than the fact that he was a very good tactician. The pale blue crossbreed was just one of those he liked almost instantly, he supposed, although as usual he doubted he could justify exactly why.
PostPosted: Fri Apr 25, 2008 3:55 pm

The blue-coated stallion frowned thoughtfully and allowed his eyes to drift away from Meleager’s once more. “That would depend,” he said after a pause, “on my reasons for joining the herd. If I had joined the herd for the sake of the herd, its reputation and so on, I would not doubt be somewhat awestruck to meet its leader. If I had joined hoping to somehow serve my own purposes; to gain power or powerful allies, I would no doubt be delighted that things were turning in my favor by allowing me to meet the stallion at the top. If I had joined the herd in the hopes of bringing it down, somehow happening to meet the herdleader would be at the top of my to do list...”

Having finished listing all the reasons for joining up that had immediately sprung to mind, Castor focused back on his superior. The question, he felt, had been asked in a friendly manner not as superior to subordinate. Candidness would probably be welcomed, in either event but less formality was needed if it was the former, which he believed it was. The tall stallion swished his tails and frowned thoughtfully to himself.

“The last I don’t think is likely,” he said with a nod, “but it isn’t unlikely enough to ignore. If you like this mare and believe she likes you in return, I see no harm in pursuing a relationship if you think you might want one with her, but do be careful until you know her a little better, and until other people know her some as well. If she has come here with evil in mind for you, I doubt she’d be able to keep up an act of pleasantness for very long. The second of the two possibilities is more likely, but not I think as likely as the first... Yet I must take this chance to tell you if you don’t already know Meleager hallah that I am not exactly the best with people.” Castor gave the other stallion a smile and flicked his wings in a shrug. “I was blessed with great talent in my field, but I have a tendency to be too logical and literal when it comes to people in every day situations. Still, I hope my opinions on this Kallisto have been of some use to you regardless of that. Perhaps you’ll be able to use them as a basis for your own ideas, which I’ve no doubt will have a better grounding in how people really are than mine.”

It was best, he felt, for Meleager to know of his faults. They didn’t affect his work after all; good tactics were good tactics and he didn’t have trouble getting his mind around bluffs, double bluffs and Gods knew what else in the context of battle. It was probably a good idea, however, for the dappled stallion to know that so far as social situations went he could be a bit of a clod. If the Reya was not made aware of this, after all, ignorance or misunderstanding on his part could be mistaken for rudeness or some such and that was the last thing he wanted.

Meleager paused for several moments, considering the alternatives Castor had laid out – the least likely first. If Kallisto had joined the herd in order to bring it down, she would surely have to be more experienced than she had appeared. If she was hiding that, she wouldn’t have let him introduce her to a tutor and other trainees. Or she was much less intelligent than she’d seemed, and thought she could bring down the herd despite her inexperience. The grey Reya dismissed that idea, leaving the two far more likely possibilities. Kallisto just wanted to be a Hellene – or she wanted power…

This was the point where he was forced to admit to himself that, like Castor, he wasn’t always the best at judging people – although so far he hadn’t noticed it in the younger stallion. The muscled Reya nodded slowly. “Thank you. I agree, the third possibility is unlikely, but I’ll be careful.” He shot the pale-coated crossbreed a brief smile before continuing, “As for the other two… I don’t know. I couldn’t read her; perhaps because I don’t know her all that well yet, but…” Meleager sighed absentmindedly. “My tendency to make instant decisions serves me well in battle, but outside of it I sometimes find myself blinded by first impressions.”

As soon as he spoke, he realised that perhaps it had not been wise to admit his weakness to the other Hellene. A moment after that, he also realised that Castor was unlikely to take advantage of it, if he was as inexpert at dealing with people as he had implied. Shifting position somewhat awkwardly, the dappled stallion avoided his subordinate’s eyes and added, “Time will tell, I suppose.”
PostPosted: Sun Apr 27, 2008 9:47 am

Castor nodded thoughtfully. “Yes, I suppose it will... I hope it works out for you though Meleager hallah. It would do the herd good to see you with a mate again... and I think I like you as well as respecting you as a leader, so I would like you to have a mate and be happy, too.” He did like the dappled Reya, so far. He was honest and quite kind, and he’d taken the time to come and meet his father. He hadn’t even put it off until another day, and that pleased the Master Tactician greatly. It would be nice for Meleager to have a mare he loved again, and for him to have foals again too.

Giving the other stallion another smile and not quite knowing what to say next, the tall crossbreed lowered his head and took another bite of his sweet-water fruit. Should he be trying to find himself a mate? Maybe. It would be nice to have a companion, and maybe once he found himself a mate, the two of them could search for a pair of female lovers to solve the obvious problem with foals. Was he too young for it? It was hard to tell; he’d never spent much time with Nequus his own age and wasn’t too sure of how many of them already had mates or foals even. Perhaps, the blue-eyed stallion pondered, he ought to find that out at some point.

“Her being an outlander could be good, though,” Castor said after a moment as more conversational words popped into his head, “fresh blood is always good after all even in a young herd like this. Your taking a mate not born in these lands might well make it a popular thing to do, might lead to expansion of the herd which would be good too.” Maybe he should look for an outlander to court or something... No. No he remembered now. People outside the herd often hated his kind. He was safer, much safer looking for a good stallion who was already a Hellene; either born or part of the herd for quite some time.

The dappled stallion had taken the opportunity, while the other Nequus was speaking, to take a bite of the fruit at his feet. He chewed a little more slowly than was absolutely necessary as he considered the crossbreed’s words. Of course, he was right about the situation as it would affect the herd; but that was only to be expected. Meleager already knew that he needed to find a mate. It was not that that he was considering as he delayed his reply. Castor liked him? That was certainly a good thing, given the amount of time they would be spending together as members of the High Council. And pleasing, too, since he liked the younger stallion himself. It was nice to be liked.

He believed Castor was genuine, as well. He thought he could read the crossbreed, unlike Kallisto, and he could detect no hint of untruth in his tone or expression. Meleager swallowed, and was about to reply with something suitable when the tactician spoke again. He took another mouthful of the juicy sweet-water fruit as he listened, and nodded in agreement.

“Indeed; that would be a good opportunity for expansion without annoying any of our neighbours. I don’t think that so many of the herd would follow my example as to make a significant difference, though.” Truth be told that was not the method he would prefer to use to increase the size of the herd, but Castor was probably well aware of that. Glancing across at him, his Reya tails and Ichsa wings, Meleager frowned slightly, and added, “There is always the problem of finding outlanders who share the Hellenic values – equality for stallions and mares, no discrimination against crossbreeds, the true warrior spirit…”

Surreptitiously running his gaze over the other stallion’s handsome form again, Meleager wondered idly if he had a mate. The tactician had said nothing about it, and it might be too pushy to ask, but he couldn’t help being curious.
PostPosted: Sun Apr 27, 2008 1:06 pm

Castor gave a snort and a nod. “Indeed, so I’ve heard at any rate. I’m fortunate enough not to have experienced the intolerance it is said many feel for people like me, and indeed I am fortunate enough never to have had too much to do with true cowards.” Save for his thrice damn sister; that b***h. He didn’t doubt that she’d be planning some way to get back at him in the sharp but ultimately unhellenic mind of hers.

Perhaps he should consider getting himself some kind of guard for times when he wandered close to the borders of their territory; he wouldn’t stand a chance against Ambrosia in a fight, let alone anyone she might have recruited to ‘kill the evil crossbreed’. She herself, of course, could quite easily pass for Reya, and was probably doing just fine wherever she was.

“I’ve heard that we’ve had quite a few new members sworn in of late,” the tendril-winged stallion commented after a moment with a slight smile to Meleager. “Perhaps I shall be as lucky in meeting an attractive one as you have been.” And maybe one that either shared his way of thinking or didn’t mind it. He was respected by almost all the Nequus he knew, or so he thought, and though he was liked by many as well, he believed, there was never anything more than casual friendship.

Perhaps, the blue tactician considered with an internal sigh, there would never be any more than that. Maybe he wasn’t made for such things and ought to keep himself to his duties. Not an option worth considering until he’d at least tried to find a mate, but a worrying possibility nonetheless. For all that he knew he was different to other Nequus, Castor was aware that he was still the same in many fundamental ways. Nobody liked to be alone, after all.

Meleager himself had never seen the problem with crossbreeds that some people had. Often the combinations of characteristics they inherited were advantageous, and even if some, like Castor, were less fortunate, they generally made up for that in other ways. The Master Tactician had his intelligence, and his height – his height was definitely useful, the grey stallion thought with a smile to himself as he took another bite of the sweet-water fruit. It was a shame that the trees that such fruit grew on tended to be too tall for anyone other than those with Aeri blood to reach them. Perhaps he would have to keep the other stallion around more often. Although, of course, he had better things to be doing that fetching the herdleader fruit. Maybe not.

He certainly wouldn’t mind spending more time with Castor, though. Since the pale stallion had shown a sense of humour and, more importantly, hadn’t made him feel foolish for asking for advice about Kallisto, Meleager had begun to like him more than his first instinct had been. He hoped that they could be friends, or something close to that. He had been fairly close to Phaedra before her death, and although it was hard to strike the right balance in relationships with his immediate subordinates, it was definitely good to be friendly with council members.

The dapple grey stallion swallowed, and nodded in response to the tactician’s comment. “Yes… If I meet any other outstanding newcomers, I’ll be sure to point you in their direction,” he added with a grin. By that remark he guessed that Castor was single; a pity, the muscled Reya thought. He would certainly have to look for someone suitable to set the other Hellene up with.
