Was it the fourth day or the fifth since she’d arrived? Kallisto cropped at the grass under her hooves and pondered this question with a slight frown on her pretty face. Five, almost certainly... Yes; five or four and a half, depending on how you wanted to count it. Still, not very long, yet already she was beginning to feel that the members of the warrior her accepted her. She’d spoken to other civilians, a few of the soldiers and other Nequus of some position too. Though she had yet to do any real exploring, she liked the bits of the place she’d seen very well indeed.
The slim mare grinned to herself and took a pace forward. Better than the good food, better than the friendly people, better than the attractive stallions, the appreciative glances she’d had; better than all of it, she’d found something entirely inappropriate to do with her life.
This plan, so far, amounted to training up to be a warrior in one of the six marks, and taking several wholly inappropriate lovers; preferably some non-Ichsa in there, Gods knew there were enough toned, tall and charmingly smiling stallions of every breed to choose from. Maybe she ought to find herself a mare to court, too; that’d piss her father off like nothing else... Save perhaps the idea of her being a warrior.
Kallisto smirked and continued with her grazing, watching her surroundings surreptitiously with ice blue eyes. If anyone interesting happened by, she didn’t want to miss them just because she’d been eating.

It was the Ichsa mare's pale mane and tail that caught his eye, and her pretty face that held it, for a moment, before he realised he was staring. Meleager lowered his head to crop at the sweet grass, and wondered. Who was she? He didn't think he had seen her before; he would have remembered. What with the size of the herd, and new recruits that joined from time to time, it was hard to keep track, and it was quite possible she was new to the Hellenes. The stallion glanced up again, surreptitiuously sneaking another glance at her. She didn't wear any of the six marks, that he could see, and he didn't think she looked or moved like a warrior. She was pretty, though. Not quite beautiful - if anything, she lacked the flaws that would have made her really stand out - but very pretty all the same. He did need a mate. The dappled Reya sighed to himself. He needed a mate, he needed heirs, but he didn't want to start courting again... not while there was still some hope for him with Iris. She hadn't seemed interested in the past, but she also hadn't given him an outright rejection. But, he supposed, it couldn't hurt to see if there was any chance this mare was interested. Maybe the possibility of a rival would encourage Iris to act. Meleager paced forwards, drawing level with the slim Ichsa, seemingly casually. As he lowered his head to graze, he glanced across at her to see if he could catch her gaze.

Catch her gaze he did, and indeed her interest. Quite tall, built like a warrior, dapple grey... this had to be Meleager, the herd’s leader. Well well, wasn’t luck smiling on her of late? A chance to talk to the big stallion, the Reya in charge of the whole affair. Perhaps, if she played the game right, she could get something out of this meeting. A cordial acquaintance with the powerful Nequus, a chance perhaps to be taken under his wing and be trained, and therefore to be able to talk with him and of course flirt with him often. It was a long shot that he might be interested in a very new and wholly untrained member of his herd... but he was making eye contact.
The flaxen-maned mare raised her head from feeding and smiled at Meleager with just the faintest hint of coyness; too much of that, she suspected, would be out of place in this herd. “Do my eyes deceive me,” she began softly, “or are you Meleager hallah?” Simplicity and caution for now would be best, she needed time to take the measure of this stallion, of whether or not he really was interested in her and, if he was, in what way. This was a rare opportunity, and the beautiful mare was well aware of this fact. If she messed it up, she probably wouldn’t get a second charge at the target.

The grey stallion raised his head and returned her smile. "Indeed, I am," he replied, unsurprised that she had recognised him. "You have the advantage of me, I'm afraid," Meleager added apologetically, though he was now certain that they had not met previously, and there was no way he could have known her name, "I don't think we've met before. Are you new to the herd, by any chance?" He kept the smile in place, hoping to come across as more friendly than he had probably been portrayed. It wasn't that he wasn't friendly, of course, he could be, at times, and he rather liked meeting new people - it was more that he had a feeling that most mares liked potential mates to be nice.
Maybe not so much Hellene mares, though. Which was a good thing, since 'nice' didn't come naturally to the bulky Reya stallion. Certainly not as naturally as 'powerful', or 'imposing', or even 'irritated'. He could try his best, though, and hope to make a decent impression on the pretty Ichsa.
Now he looked at her more closely, permission granted by her choosing to speak to him, she really was very pretty. Especially her eyes - pale blue that stood out against her dark coat. The grey stallion's smile became less deliberate and more genuine, and he was pleased to note faint interest in her gaze.

Kallisto allowed her smile to broaden a little and dipped her head respectfully. “My name is Kallisto, Meleager hallah, and you’re quite right; I only arrived her a few days ago. Captain Hades brought me in, though I must say I had been hoping to join your handrakai for some time now.” It was true, the moment she had first heard of the warrior herd of the northeast she had wished to make herself part of it.
Until lately, though, she had believed that you yourself had to be a fighter to make the cut. Kallisto was seldom glad to be wrong, but that had been one of those times. While just being a member of the Hellenes wasn’t deperatly inappropriate, it was fairly inappropriate and with luck, after a bit of time and a lot of training, she could become even more inappropriate and join one of the six marks.
“I didn’t expect it to be so big,” the dappled mare went on with another smile and a slightly embarrassed dip of her head. “Maybe I’m just naive and poorly traveled,” she went on, “but I’ve never known a strongly held territory as large as my fellow citizens tell me yours is.” Again, it was true that she was impressed; her family’s lands were positively puny compared to the rolling expanses of D’ob, the lush forests of Yisi and even the edge of the dread forests below Casa Tiner that made up the Hellene territories.
“I have yet so see it all,” Kallisto added as an afterthought, “but I think I shall make that one of my first priorities... Along with beginning to train with the hopes of making it into one of the six marks one day.” Thus far, the lightning force appealed to her most; speed and agility were two of her greatest strengths after all, but failing that the earth force might suit her well.
Still, time and the opportunities that presented themselves to her would tell. There no sense getting overly attached to one idea and neglecting another until she had a better idea of what would be expected of her, and indeed of whether or not she would even be able to turn her swiftness and grace to battle, rather merely impressing others with her dancing and her fleet-hooved gallop.

“Kallisto?” A good Hellene name, although Meleager was slightly surprised to hear it belonging to one born outside the herd. “Welcome to the Hellenes, in that case.” The Reya stallion smiled down at the slim Ichsa, and went on, “As herdleader, I’m flattered that you wanted to join us – new blood is always good.” And if she had been brought in by the Omega captain, she was sure to fit in and have potential to be of benefit to the herd. Meleager trusted the dark-coated captain’s judgement.
At her comment about the size of the Hellene territory he chuckled quietly. “No, the Hellenes do hold a large amount of land – but then it’s only suited to the size of the herd. And if it was weakly held before, surely the warrior who can take it – and keep it – is entitled to the land he desires? …We Hellenes guard our land well, in any case, and hold onto it once we have it. It wouldn’t do for a warrior herd to be seen to lose something so precious.” The dappled stallion was still smiling, but his thoughts had drifted to more serious matters than flirting with a pretty newcomer. They had not had to work to hold their territories, either, in recent times. What if that made them seem weak? …Although Kallisto didn’t seem to think so.
The dapple-grey stallion sighed to himself. He was not here to think of conquest and battle; he had been here to relax and graze, and now he was talking to an attractive mare who looked to make a good Hellene citizen in the future, given her aspirations to one of the six marks. He looked at her closely for a moment – it was clear that she didn’t yet have the strength of a warrior, but perhaps she was a swift runner, or more steadfast than she appeared. “Which of the six were you thinking of?” he asked. She would have to train, and he could perhaps introduce her to suitable teachers and sparring partners, maybe spar with her himself at some point in the future.

“Lightning or earth,” the blue-eyed mare responded easily with a nod of her head. “Speed and agility are my greatest physical strengths,” other than her looks, of course, “and I think I could serve either force well, once I’ve actually learned to fight of course... And I’m flattered that you’re flattered,” Kallisto grinned and shook her head slightly. “Until now I had a fairly poor view of herdleaders in general, but I’m beginning to think that judging all leaders from a sample of one is a poor idea... Although I suppose that should have been obvious, really.”
She had known, sort of, that it was unlikely that all herdleaders would be unbearable bores like her sire, but until now she hadn’t seen reason to change her view. As she had said, though, her views were rapidly adjusting themselves. She had heard that Meleager was a big strong warrior as well as a fine leader, but until now she hadn’t really believed it.
Flicking her beringed left ear, the pale-maned mare allowed her grin to fade back into a softer smile. “So... I don’t know if it’s possible for you to tell just by looking and speaking to me for a few moments but do you think I might have a chance to make it into one of the marks?”
As yet, she hadn’t found out how big the army was compared to the citizenry or what the army’s standards were come to that. Did you have to be just a bit above average, or did you have to be exemplary? Above average she was sure she could learn to be quickly, she’d always been a fast learner, but exemplary might take longer, might not even be possible. Some people, Kallisto supposed, were not cut out for battle and would never be much good at it no matter how hard they might try. She hoped that she was not such a person.

Meleager chuckled. A bad experience with a herdleader? He supposed he should be pleased that she hadn't instantly disliked him because of that. "Well, I'm glad I've made a good impression on you," he replied with a smile. And he meant it. Kallisto seemed smart, was certainly pretty, and already showed a dedication to the herd. She was, on the surface at least, a perfect candidate for a mate.
"Hmm..." The grey stallion turned his mind to the brown-coated Ichsa's question. She seemed to be a good judge of her own abilities and how she'd fit in with the already established military system. "I can't tell how suited you'd be to the army, but in theory anyone can make it. As long as you're prepared to do the training, and to stick with it, you'll be fine," he added with a reassuring smile, and continued after a pause, "The standard for the marks is quite high - higher for the Lambda than Gamma. You need to be invited by one of the captains to be accepted into one of the forces, but as I said - do the work, and you're there."
The tall Reya paused, thinking back to his youth and his own training. It had been very different - but that was, of course, before Clytaemnestra and her reforms. He'd been impressed with her organisation; the army ran very smoothly, even when the Commandante herself was not present. As was the case currently... Meleager realised he'd been drifting into his own thoughts. He blinked, and shook his head slightly, then turned back to Kallisto. "Of course, it depends how well and how quickly you learn," he concluded.

The slim mare smiled and nodded, privately resolving to make it into Lambda force. Nothing but the best for her. “I’ve always been a fast learner,” she said after a moment, “and I’ve enough determination for five normal Nequus. Between you and I,” the mare went on with a chuckle, taking a pace closer to the herdleader to lower her voice conspiratorialy, “it’s ninety percent ego, but if it gets the job done, that’s what matters.” It was true, which was even better. She liked being able to be truthful and still further her own goals...
Speaking of goals, the flaxen maned mare looked Meleager over once more semi-surreptitiously, what about inappropriate foals? This stallion was strong, handsome and well placed to both advantage her and embarrass her father. One hitch, though, she had a feeling that if she were to go with the brown-eyed warrior, she would have to stay with him and, despite the advantages it would bring to be the herdleader’s mate, she wasn’t sure she was prepared to put up with fidelity and having children from only one father.
Well, no need to make a decision right now, and no guarantee that the dappled stallion even really wanted her; there was plenty of time for such things, rushing headlong into important choices was seldom a good idea, after all. Better to bide her time and see what she could see.

The dappled Reya laughed. "I think I know what you mean about that. Ego isn't all bad." His own pride had certainly been an asset to him in the past, and he'd known Nequus whose ego had served them well. In this case, it was a good thing. "Also, determination will help you with the training, from what I know of it." The stallion's subconscious noted that the Ichsa mare had moved closer to him, and showed no sign of moving away again, and it was rather pleased by that fact. "I didn't do quite the same training, of course, the system of the six marks is quite new..."
But of course, she wouldn't be interested in that. In fact, judging by the movement of her gaze, she seemed rather interested in him... Meleager smiled to himself, and allowed his gaze to drift over the slim mare's body, obviously enough that Kallisto would note his interest, whilst still being polite.
The grey stallion shifted and stretched, then turned back to the pretty Ichsa. "Kallisto-hellene, have you been introduced to any of the soldiers who oversee the training?" he asked. If she hadn't, he could introduce her to someone suitable - and so ensure that she had a good teacher, and that he knew where he was most likely to find her again. She was someone he would like to speak with again, he was fairly sure of that, although he hadn't yet formed a definite opinion of her.

Kallisto gave another nearly-coy smile at the attention of her superior’s eyes. “Not as yet, Meleager hallah, I must confess I haven’t really worked out who I should ask about things like that quite yet. As I say, I am very recently come to your herd.” And already come to the dappled stallion’s attention. That was most gratifying. Though for all she knew he could size up every mare she saw, it was still less then seven days since she’d arrived here, and already she’d met, spoken to and subtly flirted with the most important person in the herd. That was, in her opinion, quite impressive.
“If you’re not too busy with matters of state, Meleager hallah," the dappled mare went on after a moment, meeting the larger creature’s eyes and giving him a hopeful smile, “I would greatly appreciate your advice on where to start. As I say, your lands are so large I hardly know where I should start looking for people who know where I should go next, what I should do.”
In actual fact, she was quite sure that she could just have asked around the other Nequus she saw grazing and got information that way, but so far as she saw it it was far better to find out form the herdleader himself. If nothing else, it might well win her envy and awe from other citizens, and that was seldom a bad thing.

Excellent. Meleager smiled to himself, and then down at the dappled mare. She looked sweet, with that hopeful expression. He wondered at her following words – she wasn’t shy, she had spoken to him after all, and he was sure she could have found the right people herself without much trouble. But she had asked for his help, instead. That was probably a good sign; it meant she was interested in him rather than just thinking he was attractive. At least, Meleager hoped that was what it meant. He wasn’t entirely confident in his ability to judge her motives. There was no real way to tell if she was interested in Meleager the Nequus, or Meleager the herdleader, in any case. There never was.
The grey Reya shifted restlessly, and paused briefly to gather his thoughts before speaking. “I would be delighted to help you, Kallisto-hellene. Matters of state are not so pressing in these times of peace that I cannot spare you some time. Now…” he paused thoughtfully. “The Commandante and the captains are in overall charge of the trainees, of course, but it’s more the more experienced soldiers and some specialist tutors who do the actual teaching. I suppose introducing you to one of the tutors would be the best way to start. What do you think?” The bulky stallion turned to his shorter companion with a smile, pleased to be able to help her. Now she would certainly remember him.

A line of thought appeared on the pale-eyed mare’s brow, and after a moment she nodded. “Yes,” she clarified with a smile, “I don’t know anything at all about fighting beyond seeing the odd scrap between rivals here and there, so I think if I was introduced to anyone who expected me to be any good I’d just embarrass myself.”
The muscled stallion was actually quite nice, which was a refreshing change; though he was obviously interested in her appearance, that didn’t seem to be all he was interested in. Perhaps, Kallisto considered, she would have to set aside any plans to charm him and pursue a friendship instead. She didn’t actually have any friends anymore, and she missed it.
There wasn’t anything wrong with being attracted to your friends, right? Well, it was a path worth considering in any case; if she was just his friend, she was probably free to go with whoever she chose. Whilst crossbreed children with a mighty herd lord would indeed be inappropriate, if given the choice the blue-eyed Ichsa had to confess that several less important stallions would be more inappropriate than just Meleager. Besides, he almost counted as a good match.
“Thank you, Meleager hallah” the flaxen Ichsa said after a moment or two of silence, “I don’t think I’ve said that yet. I’ve no doubt that even in times of peace you’re very busy, and have countless people vying for your attention but you’ve still taken time out to give the new girl some help so... yes, thank you.” She wasn’t really used to saying things like that, but hey, she meant it and didn’t really mind so it was alright in the end.
“So... which way then?” the dappled Ichsa asked with another smile to Meleager and a glance at the lush land around them. Wherever it was he decided to take her, Kallisto decided, would be just fine by her provided he didn’t leave too soon. She wanted to make an impression on the tall Reya that he wouldn’t soon forget.

“Hmm… this way,” Meleager said, gesturing with one wing. He would take Kallisto to where some of the younger Hellenes sparred, he had decided. There would be at least one tutor there, watching and giving advice, and some of the trainees the newly-arrived Ichsa would be learning alongside. As he began to head in the direction he’d indicated, he added, “ It’s no problem, truly.”
Glancing back at the blue-eyed mare, the Reya smiled. “I want all the Hellenes to be happy, of course, and if I myself can do anything to help that, well…” He shrugged. As herdleader, it would have been easy for him to lose touch with the Hellenes as Nequus, too easy to become caught up in politics and warfare, and to forget about their lives. Times like this, rare as they were, were his way of staying connected, of remembering that the individuals of Handrakai Hellene were as important as the herd as a whole.
“Oh,” he added after a pause, recalling her comment about her lack of experience, “Don’t worry about the fact that you don’t know much of fighting – even those born into the Hellenes won’t have seen much before they begin training, so you’ll be on a fairly level footing with the others.” Possibly better than some, he considered. All the Hellenes at least started the training, but there were always some who were entirely unsuited, who dropped out and became tacticians instead, or joined the ambassadors, or simply lived as civilians. Kallisto, he was sure, would not be one of them.

The dark-coated mare relaxed somewhat at Meleager’s words and set off beside him with a smile on her lips and her ears perked eagerly forward. “Well that’s good to know,” she said with a soft chuckle and a shake of her head, “I’d hate to be the dunce of the class until I caught up... and if today is anything to go by, Meleager hallah, you do very well indeed.”
So, she was on her way to beginning training and she had some degree of rapport with the herdleader, who was actually a nice stallion. A good day for sure then, yes, as good a day as the one she’d met Hades. So far as she saw it, Kallisto smiled to herself, all she had to do was decide if she wanted to become a warrior first, or a mother.
Each so far as she saw it had pros and cons, but perhaps it would be good to get some very basic training first at least. That would give her a chance to ‘interview’ potential fathers, and to make friends and connections to other members of the herd. Once that was done, if she’d found a suitably handsome and inappropriate stallion, foals could be considered and if not, she could continue with her training.
Pleased with herself for formulating a game plan so quickly, Kallisto gave another smile to the Hellenic warrior at her side and moved onward, setting her hooves on the path to becoming one herself. The future, the pale-eyed mare considered as she turned her eyes forward once more, looked bright.
