The bright midday sun hung lazily in the middle of the sky, while several slow-moving clouds rolled across the otherwise clear blue sky. Blue-purple eyes shifted away from the heavens and instead turned towards her chocolate hooves as the appaloosa mare studied the rocks at her feet. Two piles of rocks, about the same size, sat about a foot away from each other.

She furrowed her brows a bit as she studied the rocks, then with a delicate, practiced touch she prodded the left pile apart with a hoof. She carefully placed each rock, each one symbolizing some number or object, until every rock in the pile had been placed somewhere. A muscular tail snaked forward with several sticks in its grasp, and she dropped all but one on the grass. With the last still held securely in her tail, the muscular appendage carefully stuck the stick in the grass to symbolize a forest or group of trees or some such. She continued to do the same with all the sticks in random places, even using leaves in some areas.

Once done she sighed contentedly, looking over the complex map of rocks, sticks, and leaves she had created. Doubtless it would look strange or confusing to anyone else, but she knew what each object symbolized, and understood her game completely. She then turned to the other pile of stones and repositioned herself, and set about to studying the map she'd created. With a practiced touch, she gently pushed an opposing rock into position with a chocolate hoof.

...So this was where the tacticians did their training. Meleager paused, feeling rather out of place, and took a look around. It was much quieter than the warriors' training areas; it hardly seemed like the place to plan a battle at all, to his eyes. And there was no sign of Castor. He sighed. His business would have to wait, then, unless one of the tacticians who were present knew where the pale-coated crossbreed was.

The dappled stallion trotted over to the nearest of them, intending to interrupt as politely as he could, and then leave this strange place. When he halted beside her, though, she was intent on the ground, and the movement of the rock caught his eye. Meleager frowned at the arrangement of stones and leaves, his question forgotten for the time being. What was it supposed to be? One of the tacticians' games they played, as their form of practice? It looked like nothing he could fathom, and was certainly nothing like the games he remembered playing as a colt. But then, it wouldn't be. This 'game' was far more serious than that. Even if it looked like a collection of rubbish, it must mean much more to the mare who had created it.

She had heard his hoofsteps nearby, and figured he was looking for someone else. Castor, in all probability. Even as he approached her, she did not take her eyes off the map of warriors she had created. It was of the utmost important to recreate any sort of situation the Hellenes may find themselves, so that they may have the knowledge to deal with any situation, no matter how dire.

She pointed with a hoof to the pale rocks, which represented the Hellenes. "We are outnumbered two to one, even three to one in some places," she explained, still not taking her eyes off the rocks. "There are only a few ways to deal with such a situation."

She carefully pushed the white rocks - one by one - in between particular gray rocks, either lone or grouped rocks, until there was a maze of lines formed by white rocks, separating the large group of gray rocks into a number of smaller sections. "Divide and conquer," she murmured, studying the map a bit longer, "is one of them."

She lifted her purple-blue eyes towards the dappled stallion before she bowed respectfully, dipping her muzzle as she did so. "Meleager-hallah," she murmured before rising again, shuffling her wings more comfortably against her sides. "What can I do for you?"

Meleager watched closely as she rearranged the rocks, realising a moment after her explanation that the paler rocks were supposed to represent the Hellene forces - and in that case, the darker rocks were the enemy, and the twigs must stand for trees or the like. Once he knew what each part stood for, the game, or map, or whatever it was, made more sense. The Hellenes-rocks were indeed outnumbered, but with the darker rocks split off into small groups, their numbers were of little benefit to them. If the different groups couldn't communicate or send reinforcements to each other, they would be far easier to defeat. He smiled, realising the shape behind the map. Perhaps there was some merit in this form of practice, as alien to him as it was.

He looked up a little belatedly in response to the appaloosa mare's question. "Ah, I was looking for the Master Tactician - do you know where he is?" he asked, "...It's nothing urgent, though, and if you don't mind I'd like to stay here and watch a bit longer," Meleager added with a smile. He was intrigued as to where she would go from there, because while he could see the advantage of dividing the enemy, if he was in that situation in battle he would be a little uneasy about the way his forces were also split. Still, that was what tacticians were for - to think a way out of unfavourable situations. It could be interesting to look at a battle scene from their perspective for once.

"I know very little about the tacticians' craft," he explained, "but it looks very... interesting." Confusing, too, but he suspected that the tactician's would think the same or similar about the sparring he did with the other warriors.

"I must apologize, Meleager-hallah, I do not know of Master Tactician Castor-hallah's whereabouts," the appaloosa explained, returning her purpleish gaze back towards her little game. If the herdleader wished to watch, that was fine; she just needed to figure out how to regroup the Hellenes while still keeping the opposing herd separated, that was always the fun part. "Feel free, if you wish," Jocasta offered. As long as he didn't interrupt.

Now, how to regroup... She wished she could remove some of the gray rocks, but her job was to find as many ways as possible to conquer but not kill. Removing rocks meant those removed were killed. That was reserved for the Omega force, not the other forces. "So," she thought out loud, her muscular tails playing over one another as she wracked her brains, "both groups are scattered, but the Hellenes are at least still in a line and can make contact, unlike the opposition, so we have the advantage."

That said, she carefully moved some of the pale rocks towards each other to make thicker lines, allowing the single or tiny groups of gray rocks to regroup. After a bit of strategic rearranging, the white rocks were in a circle around the gray rocks, with two intersecting lines within the circle, separating the opposition into four groups of roughly the same size. "At this point," she explained, setting her hoof down and studying the map of rocks and twigs, "the Hellenes have quite an advantage over the smaller groups of herds. Most of them are disorganized to begin with, and know how to work in a vast group, but split into smaller groups they tend to become confused and aren't sure what to do anymore. Usually whenever that happens, confusion brings panic and panic brings recklessness, and the disorganized herd falls and surrenders. However," she paused, tilting her head a bit as she continued to study the map, and prodded several of the gray rocks around, "some herds are more organized or determined, and will try to destroy any and every Hellene they can. That is when we send in the Omega force," the appaloosa explained, pushing over a group of pale rocks with one hoof that had thus far been sitting off to the side.

Meleager smiled. This mock-battle didn't seem to be working out too badly. "I see," he said with a nod. "Bring in unexpected reinforcements... and it's the Omega force, which means they'll have no idea what hit them..." He trailed off, considering the rest of the arrangement. It made sense: if they could surround the enemy, while still keeping them in small groups, then they would cut down on the number of active assailants they had, since those trapped in the centre of those groups would be unable to fight.

"We're lucky to be properly organised," he commented, then corrected himself. "No, not lucky. Well-prepared. And Commandante Clytaemnestra is to thank for that." The army had flourished under her command and with the structure she had set out. In a battle situation, it would be her job, as well as his, and that of the captains, to make sure that the soldiers followed the plan that had been set out in advance by the tacticians. As well as improvising if necessary, of course. Meleager grinned wryly to himself. That was what he was best at - improvisation in the midst of battle, not all this detailed planning and modelling. He would never be any good at it, no matter how much he watched.

Still, it was interesting, and perhaps he would learn something he could impress Castor with later, once he found him. There was no hurry for him to leave, for now, since if he couldn't find Castor here he didn't know where to look.

The appaloosa mare nodded her approval and smiled a bit as she lowered her muzzle to remove a large portion of the gray rocks. "Correct, Meleager-hallah. You are quite knowledgeable, as always." She hoped he'd take the compliment as it was meant to be taken; she'd always heard of his temper and was in no hurry to incur his wrath. He'd be fine with how she worded it, she was certain, but it still worried her a bit. Having her skull pounded in would be a bit of a hindrance to her newly-assigned role.

"Yes; we are lucky to have such a brilliant Commandante as Clytaemnestra-hellene," the violet-eyed mare agreed as she re-positioned the white rocks now that a vast number of gray were removed. Oh, how she loved her job. "We are also lucky to have such magnificent leadership, too." By this, she meant in Castor and Iris as well as Meleager, but let him think it meant just him if he liked, she wouldn't tell him otherwise. That would certainly set him off.

"Now that a large number of the herd has been cut down," she explained, wanting to get back to her little strategy game, "most opposing herds surrender here. I haven't encountered any that would fight until their whole herd was massacred, but I'm sure some do." She wasn't entirely sure how to show that, however; surely they would send in soldiers from other forces, horns preferred, or would they stick to just the Omega force doing most of the killing? A question to ask the Commandante, to be certain, she figured, as she rearranged more white rocks to reflect the other herd's surrender.

This one really was going for the compliments, wasn't she? Meleager smiled. Well, he wasn't going to complain about that. "Thank you," he replied, turning his smile on the appaloosa mare. "Although I must add that I do not run the herd alone." That would be a daunting task. The council had always been a great source of assistance to him, even in the early days when he had been young and foolish enough to ignore their advice. "The First Ambassador and Master Tactician have their parts to play, too. As to that matter - really, I know little of how you go about deciding strategies.

"So," he added with another smile, "please continue. What are you intending to do now?" Tilting his head to one side, the stallion considered the new arrangement. The Hellenes were now much closer to equal the numbers of their enemy, perhaps even outnumbering them in certain places. They definitely had the upper hand. But, Meleager concluded, that meant little. The mare beside him had shown that a smaller force could still be successful, and he knew from his own experience that soldiers who had just seen their friends and herdmates slaughtered were likely to become even more determined. He would question the tactician on that, he decided, if her next move seemed to him to be too hasty in assuming their victory. It was not worth bringing it up now - he didn't know enough about how this worked to risk making a fool of himself.

She smiled and bobbed her head in agreement, figuring she should lay off the compliments, lest he assume they were all meant for him. While he did deserve many, there were others that deserved them too. She wasn't going to correct the herdleader, however; it would be on her head if she did.

She kept her violet-hued eyes on her little game, studying it carefully. "Well, here," she began, pointing at it with a hoof, "the opposing herd has decided to avoid more losses by surrendering," which she had already displayed there. "I think it's fair to allow them that chance, if they so choose."

She tilted her head to the side a bit, studying it more. "But, let's say they did not --" she said, pushing the rocks back to where they were before the surrender-display, "-- surrender. Instead, they wish to fight until the very last." To show that, she pushed more of the gray rocks together, some of them breaking through the thinnest white rock lines. "And we let them, as we are fully prepared to do the same." At this, she pushed more of the white rocks into position, and began moving the 'dead' gray rocks off to the side, until only a few remained. "At this point, the rest are either taken prisoner, absorbed into the herd as Ambassador Iris-hellene was, or killed, if they refuse either other option." At least, she thought some would be taken prisoner - she hadn't ever seen anyone taken prisoner, so that would be another question to ask the Commandante. "And that's it," she concluded with a smile, peering up at the herdleader. "Roughly, anyway. I still need to work to improve my skills and knowledge."

Meleager watched closely as the appaloosa tactician went through the final motions of the mock battle. It seemed reasonable to him; he was glad she hadn't assumed the surrender of the other herd. The final victory of the Hellenes-rocks pleased him, as well, although he wondered if the tacticians ever played out battles in which they lost. It was an option that had to be considered, but surely that would defeat the object of their occupation. Not for the first time since he'd started watching the game, he was glad that he didn't have this job. He wouldn't have had the patience or the logic to make it work. The simulation of rocks and twigs was too unlike a real battlefor him to take it seriously.

Still, what the tacticians did was necessary. He knew that, even if he didn't understand what it was all about sometimes - most of the time. And this one seemed like she was good at it. Turning to face her, he nodded. "That seemed to follow my experience of real battles pretty well. I'm not much of a judge, but you seem to be good at this," he added with a smile, deciding to make the exchange of compliments more equal. "I should go now, and keep looking for Castor-hellene, but thank you for letting me observe you... ah, I never found out your name," he admitted, looking at her questioningly.

Names were important. Address people by name and they believed you showed an interest in them. Even if a name was all he knew, herdmembers were generally flattered that their leader knew anything about them. It was one of the first things he'd learnt - that names had power. He would be sure to take note of this one; the mare had after all done him a favour, and that was even more important to remember.

She enjoyed her new position very much; even before she was bumped up to a full tactician, she had played these games before. The rocks and twigs and such were not merely rocks and twigs in her mind, no; each rock on the ground before her was a full, life-sized nequus fighting fiercely in battle, eyes full of spirit and determination. Each twig was an enormous tree, towering over the hoofed creatures and offering shade or serving as a shield from an offending nequus. No, they weren't merely rocks and twigs to her, and never would be. It wasn't a game, what she did. No, it was life, it was real, it was what they had to do to survive, should anything happen. It was not something she, or anyone else, could afford to lose.

She offered him a full smile as she dipped her head in respect and thanks, not quite expecting any sort of compliment for her little 'game.' "Thank you, Meleager-hallah. I do hope you find Castor-hellene soon. Actually, I myself would like to seek an audience with him at some point, to discuss a few things. I've not quite fully settled into my new tactician duties as yet, and I have a few small questions to ask him." She needed answers as soon as possible, and as the Commandante was away, the new Master Tactician seemed like an even better option than 'Nestra.

Oh, dear; names, she'd forgotten. Everyone knew the leader's name, she'd forgotten to give him hers. How awful she must seem; the newest tactician forgot to give her name to the herdleader. Wonderful. "Jocasta," she offered the dapple gray stallion with a polite smile and a respectful bob of her head. "I apologize for not giving it to you sooner. I suppose I was a bit too wrapped up in my little strategy game to offer it before. My apologies." There, hopefully that would be acceptable. She'd hate to offend him by being so careless, just after she'd achieved her new position, too.
PostPosted: Fri Aug 01, 2008 2:13 pm

"Don't worry, Jocasta," Meleager smiled, "That's perfectly understandable. I would expect no less dedication from any tactician," he added with a faint grin. That would probably surprise her, he realised - most Hellenes didn't expect even the slightest hint of humour from their herdleader. It was the only proper reaction here, though. He couldn't be annoyed or offended. After all, he had been so absorbed in watching her game that he hadn't asked her name until now.

He nodded, mostly to himself, and continued in a more serious tone, "I'll mention you to Castor-hellene - I'm sure he'll be happy to meet with you and answer your questions." The new Master Tactician was busy, but not so busy that he couldn't do that favour, and if he did refuse - which Meleager thought unlikely - he might find himself on the receiving end of some advice from an unusual source. If there was one thing the dappled stallion had always had to do by himself - and been good at by himself, too - it was leadership. Since Castor was still new to his position, Meleager wouldn't feel too presumptuous giving him advice on that, if it was needed.

He smiled at the appaloosa tactician - Jocasta, he reminded himself - and waited for her reply before he went on his way.

Thankfully he hadn't been offended by the appaloosa mare so carelessly forgetting to offer her name to the herdleader, and he even made room for levity. She offered him another smile before bobbing her head once more in agreement. Yes, she was very dedicated to her position. Her strategies and games were her job, her duty to the Hellenes, and her top priority. Keeping her body in top physical condition was second on the list, and usually was what she did with her early afternoons, after a morning of devising strategies.

At the mention of Meleager telling Castor of her questions, she couldn't help but grin. "That would be wonderful, Meleager-hallah," she said, dipping her muzzle in respect and thanks. She'd feel awkward searching out the new Master Tactician, but if he was previously told then that might make the whole scenario go a lot smoother. "I just have a few, to ensure that I'm doing everything and thinking correctly. I don't want to charge ahead in my duties, only to find out later that I was doing something wrong." That would be absolutely terrible. Something she wanted to avoid at all costs.

From his expectant pause, and the conversation winding down, she figured he would like to go find the blue stallion, so she bowed her head deeply and offered him a gracious smile. "Thank you very much, Meleager-hallah. I wish you luck in finding Castor-hellene as swiftly as possible, and good day to you. Feel free to find me if you need me, for whatever reason." He obviously would do so anyway, being the herdleader and all that, but she wanted to make sure he knew she wouldn't mind in the least if he did. Some nequus were irritated when the herdleader came for some reason or another.

With that said, she offered him another smile before turning to her rocks and twigs once more, pushing some aside and arranging them in a completely different manner, before setting out to study them and move them around in another battle plan.
