Fort Weyr
Fort is said to be the largest Weyr on Pern, with a maximum capacity falling between 500 and 600 dragons. Partly excavated using the stonecutter equipment and as a result the walls are smoother then, the other Weyrs which are hand carved, it was the first Weyr built and occupied during the First Pass. It is located in the mountains of the Southwestern peninsula of the Northern Continent. Fort Hold, Ruatha, and South Boll Holds are beholden to Fort Weyr. Additionally Fort Weyr protects Healer and Harper Halls.
Fort Hold Fort Hold, located to the West of the Northern Continent, is Pern's oldest Hold. It is the location to which the Pern colonists evacuated upon abandoning the Southern Continent ten Turns (years) after arriving on Pern. In Pern's early history, the colonists established a College at Fort Hold which evolved into the Harper Hall during the Second Pass. The Masterhealer is located at Fort Hold as well. The hold itself is constructed as part of a cliff-formed palisade
Ruatha Hold Ruatha Hold is believed to be Pern's second Hold, although in fact it was the third established. It is located east of Fort Hold. Throughout Pern's history Ruatha has been known for its runnerbeasts. Ruatha also has a reputation for providing the Weyrs many famous dragonriders, particularly queenriders like Lessa.
Southern Boll Southern Boll Hold was the second Northern Hold founded, although this fact is not known to modern Pernese. It occupies the southern end of the Boll peninsula in the West of Pern, south of Fort Hold, with the Hold itself located near the peninsula's tip. Southern Boll is home to the Masterweaverhall.(Hold information lovingly plagiarized from The Atlas of Pern and Wikipedia.org).

More Details Its mountainous location makes Fort an unpleasantly cold place to be in winter, and still cool in the mornings and evenings even in summer. It is not a place to run about scantily clad, although those that do so are more likely to be viewed with astonished amusement than censure. Having both Harper and Healer Halls under its protection, the Weyr can hardly help but acknowledge that women are every bit as capable as men are when it comes to most things, and so as long as a person is capable of performing a task, they are allowed to do so - or try at any rate!
The Weyr's relations with its constituents are generally pretty good. The collaborative history of harpers and dragonriders has seen to this, and the universal necessity of healers to weyrfolk means that there is a preponderance of dragonhealers around the Weyr learning their craft before being posted elsewhere. It is also one of the places journeyman healers are sent to learn to study the treatment of special types of wounds like Threadscore during Intervals since this is a skill the Weyr never allows to lapse.
The present leadership at Fort Weyr are both relatively new to their positions, but they are not bad at their work. Weyrleader L'ki and his bronze Horvath have been in that position for the past two turns, leading alongside Weyrwoman Alaia and her gold Opreth. Both leaders were born outside of the Weyr and because of this they show a slight bias toward favoring others who were not born and raised in the Weyr when it comes to who they spend time with and listen to, although both are inclined to appoint weyrborn people to positions of authority because they assume that they will know more about the task. In other words, there is opportunity at Fort for everyone, really.
The greatest problem facing the Weyr recently is that there has been a distinct shortage of golds in recent years. The clutch Alaia's Opreth hatched from was the last one to contain a queen egg, and that was nearly twenty years ago. There have been concerns expressed about the ability of Fort golds to lay queen eggs anymore, but never where Alaia or Opreth might hear. Particularly Opreth. Some riders might grumble that this is because of all the Searching done by the Weyr, but it isn't as if there's a shortage of space in this large Weyr.
There is also the matter of Ailinsy, rider of gold Serith. Because of some personal relationship drama Lin has been made unwelcome at Igen, where Serith was hatched, and so she has been staying at Fort as a guest for the past four turns. She returns to Igen whenever Serith is near to rising, as part of the agreement worked out between the two Weyrs, but she does not care to stay there very long.
