Carydis

User ImageName: Carydis
Age: 16
Gender: female
Sexuality: straight
Craft: none
Rank: weyrbrat/candidate
Appearance: Average height and chunky, Carydis isn't someone to whom the adjectives lithe, slim, lissome, slender, or willowy could be accurately applied. She has unremarkable brown eyes that she adorns with too much kohl and brown hair that is so tangled it is basically matted solid close to her skull. Don't worry, she'll shave it all off when she gets around to it. Her lips are full and pouty, but that could be an illusion created by her chubby cheeks. She doesn't bathe nearly often enough, or mend her torn and stained clothing. She re-wears outfits until someone else hides them and washes them. She thinks that her generally slovenly appearance makes her seem like she doesn't care because she's badass, but really she just looks sloppy.

Personality:
Accepting, except when she's not: Good-looking boys can come around but will be met with behavior that vacillates between too-friendly and hostile. Whether this is the cause or the effect of good-looking boys rarely coming around, it's hard to tell. Weird boys are welcome, too, and weird girls as long as they're not prettier than Cary is. Or if they're prettier than her, they must be a lot more weird, like, freakishly so. Generally the less popular or appealing people of the Weyr are her type of people, and she is proud of her too-cool-to-be-cool friends. She is also very possessive when it comes to her friends and new people that she doesn't invite into the group are viewed with suspicion. On the other hand, Cary is welcoming toward people who are new to the Weyr and unfamiliar with its ways, even when they prove too cool for her weird little group. Additionally, she is truly prejudiced against anyone she thinks might think they're better than she is. This has nothing to do with what they actually think and is all about her perception of these people.
One of the guys: Cary fits in well with guys. She is rude and crude and bawdy and lewd. She will laugh at their fart jokes, remark on the hotness of chicks, and get into trouble drinking with them even if she has no head for wine. Then she won't understand why the go for the pretty girly-girls she holds in such disdain. Secretly she might want one of them to wake up and realize he wants to be more than bros with her, and doesn't get that her behavior is okay for a friend who is a girl, but not for a girlfriend. Her circle of guy friends does not usually overlap with her circle of misfits, and it is unclear whether she's actually friends with these guys or if they tolerate her and she imagines that she's one of them, but however it works out, Cary has a lot of masculine attitudes and mannerisms which she frequently uses at inappropriate times, apparently just so that she can prove to everyone how much she's not like everybody else while simultaneously demonstrating to the guys she wants to befriend and impress that she's just like them.
High maintenance and delusional: Cary would deny up and down that she's high maintenance. Just look at her! She is obviously not some fussy, frilly, hysterically little lady who has to be complimented at least twice every hour, and she's definitely not obsessed with clothes and makeup like those shallow girls are. She's as low maintenance as they come. Except she's always there, tagging along, showing up without an invitation and lurking until someone notices her, at which point she'll protest that they're only including her to be nice. Much reassurance of her importance is necessary, and if it isn't forthcoming she sulks. She doesn't call it that, of course, but it's what she does and only hours-long talks in which many declarations of friendship and devotion are made will lure her out. She is a show-off and one-upper willing to do anything to keep all her chosen peers' attention (and approval) on her.
Loyal to a point: Insults to Cary's friends will see Cary jumping down the offender's throat. She will defend her friends, against anybody and anything, even when the things being said about them are true. She is especially protective of the weird ones. It is very simple to her: these are her friends and if you talk s**t about them, you will have to deal with her. She sees it as her prerogative. Within her circle of friends she is a judgmental gossip who cannot keep a secret if she thinks telling it will make her seem more important and interesting. Given her somewhat two-faced nature, you'd think no one would tell her anything, but it can be fun to verbally rip someone else to shreds without their knowledge. People outside her circle of friends can expect no mercy, and even people inside it will probably be discussed behind their backs with one another. She just can't help it.
Innocent and ignorant all at once: You wouldn't think so. She doesn't think so. But the fact is that Cary has no idea what it's like to be in any kind of romantic relationship. She's never been in one. She's never been kissed or held hands with a member of the opposite sex outside of childhood creche games like Charging Wher. She doesn't know how to flirt or tell when others are flirting around her. No one flirts with her, and if they did she wouldn't notice. She doesn't really get the social cues that say when someone likes someone else, and so she'll occasionally be the awkward kid standing around, watching you make out and asking when you want to hang out. She just doesn't get it. What's more, because she doesn't get it she tends to imagine interest where there is none and works herself into unspoken crush based on innocuous words or deeds. Once she's done that she will jealously stalk the object of her affection, turning up wherever he is and staring silently, as if the force of her stare will win him. She hates the girls her crushes go with instead of her, even though she won't admit it. She tries to be extra nice to them in a "look at how selfless I am" sort of way (while talking about them behind their back, of course).

History

Born to two rider parents, Cary never knew her father and barely knew her mother. She was fine with this until she was old enough to be a candidate and learned some people live with their parents until they start a family of their own, at which point she became obsessed with her own parents. She guilted her mum into letting her live with her in her weyr, but her mother was no caretaker and thus began Cary's grunge period. She thought it would get her mum's attention and make her fuss over her like the creche workers did when she got dirty or said naughty words. Eventually her mum suggested that she ought to live with the other candidates and Cary moved out with a hurt butt and hasn't spoken to her mum ever since, though she plans to Impress a queen and be in charge of everyone, including her mum, someday. Life got better in the dorms. She found a group of (weird) people to fit in with. She's an indifferent student and a lazy shirker of work and punishment but she isn't seen as irredeemable. Yet.
