The first day at Camp Larkspur had been very exciting for the ten year old. Although it had started off very bumpy when they first arrived, after everything had been settled and things had calmed down the child was able to relax. Introduction had been important and Ainsley had made sure to make those to the other girls in the cabin immediately, which hadn't taken much work since she had already been familiar with Istas and Ridley from the grade three class at school, but she'd been able to meet a new girl named Jenna who also expressed a desire in seeing a bigger animal. Maybe a big cat? Ainsley could dream but the child knew the only large cat she wanted to see was Big Kitty.
The tour of the camp had been interesting but the part she looked forward to the most was the Camp Fire Marshmallow Roast with Sam and the Sing-a-long. Sam had promised to roast her marshmallows, and in return she did enough singing for the both of them. It was the perfect snack and activity to tire out the children on the first day and send everyone to bed without much of an issue, at least it did for Ainsley. She fell asleep without even having a chance to read any of Redwall, sleeping without a sound.
On the second day at camp the child woke up full of energy as soon as the sight of dawn had pushed its way into the windows of the cabin. She'd barely been able to hold in her excitement as she quietly exited the cabin and then released it as she pranced her way down to the mess hall for breakfast. She wasn't tempted by their sugary treats, and instead she found the healthiest thing on the menu and had that with a glass of orange juice.
After breakfast and into the afternoon the child had snunk into Improv Lessons, and then took a peek into the Dance. She didn't take part but there was a small smile lingering on her face as she thought about December and her time with Gwenliana. Was Gwenliana here, dancing her way around all the children with her smile lit on her face, waving towards Ainsley to come join her? She certainly was, Ainsley couldn't see her but she felt like Gwenliana had snuck her way out of the freezer at home and latched onto her heart, following her to this very spot. The memories had been pleasant but tough and she found herself content watching and dancing by herself under the trees, feeling the cold touch of Gwenliana on her hand as she held it up into the sky. Small tears in the corner of her eyes went unnoticed as the child danced clumsily with all her heart.
As the day ended and the night began to creep into the sky Ainsley settled down in one of the bean bag chairs, cozy and eyes locked onto her book Redwall. She had gotten quite a few chapters in and before she knew it, it was already time for lights out. Hesitantly, she'd gone into bed and while staring up into the ceiling, she soon fell asleep with Octavian Oswald by her side. That night Ainsley had slept peacefully, at least until the creepers had crept creepily into the cabins. The creepers did a good job creeping creepily as they crept around the cabin, not managing to wake up the child that was sleeping peacefully in the single bed nearest to the door. She might have been their first target as they tested those waters. She had tossed, and turned but it wasn't the dreams that had caused her to do so. It was like she was begging to wake up, but her body unwilling to do so as her energy was slowly drawn from her.
She did wake up, many hours later after the sun had been in the sky for several hours. She was tired, and hadn't wanted to wake up but with Octavian Oswald unusually on top of her chest as if he had been trying to protect her, she forced her feet over the side of the bed, dragging them along with her clothes for the day. What a shameful sight it was for the senshi of sleep to be so tired! With as much haste as the child could foreigh, she made her way to the mess hall with Octavian Oswald in tow and found herself some breakfast. The sugary treats looked awfully tempting but the child managed to stay away from them, eating breakfast once again with a glass of cranberry juice. Her eyes couldn't help but linger towards the pancakes of another camper at the table across from her.
"Mmm," she said. They looked so good!
Did Octavian Oswald think so too? She looked around for him on the table but she couldn't find him there. Where had he gone? She hadn't noticed but he had been brushed off the table and on the floor in the direction of the camper with the pancakes. She'd finally found him and with more energy in her she found herself giggling. He definitely thought so! She'd given him a little tap on the nose and picked him back up into her arms. No pancakes for him! At least her energy seemed to have returned, readying her for the new day.

Ainsley had been more and more tired over the weekend than she ever had been ever remembered being before. It was strange, it didn't seem to matter how much sleep she got but every morning she'd wake up feeling weaker than she had been when she went to sleep. She couldn't believe camp activities were wearing her out so much! She had to assume that all camps were like this but now even doing something she normally enjoyed before, and something that required very little physical exertion, such as arts and crafts had been nearly putting her to sleep in the middle of the afternoon. She couldn't imagine what was wrong with her but she felt like she needed to try something new.
News traveled fast from cabin to cabin as it took over the camp and before the child knew it she was already walking towards the lake for the triathlon that was going to be taking part there. She only vaguely understood what a triathlon was but she certainly wasn't prepared for it. Although Lissy tried to teach Ainsley to swim, it probably wasn't going nearly as well as the other child had hoped. By the end of camp, maybe, she would be able to do the doggy paddle, or otherwise thought of as, the kitty paddle. The Cora Paddle. The child pushed her way through the crowd until she was able to find someone and inquire about the activity. She asked what it was, and what it required to take part in. Although the child liked the water, a race wasn't really her thing and she really didn't want to do something that might otherwise cause trouble for the rest of the children. She could barely manage to float. She'd just watch.
"Thank you," the child replied politely. "I will just watch."
She wandered away and found the best seat she could manage, placing her bunny plushie Octavian Oswald on top of her lap so he could see as well. She looked around as they divided up the children into teams. She seen a bluenette being divided into one of the teams and waved, hoping it was her new friend Lissy. Oh. She wished she could swim as well as Lissy could! Lissy was so good at swimming! Ainsley could barely manage to float, and she still didn't feel very comfortable in the water without her little inner tube to keep her feeling safe and above water.
It wasn't as if participating was the only way to enjoy the activity though and in another way, even though she wasn't in the race, she was still participating. Her eyes were moving with the race just as their bodies were and her voice was pushing itself just like their muscles. Even the thrill of the race was boiling in her blood as she watched it unfold, eagerly hoping to see who would win and cheering for everyone she knew who was competing. It had become a game of her own to see just what would happen. Just how would the end of this story turn out to be?

By the time Ainsley had woken up on Wednesday morning, it was already pouring out. She could hear the water as it dropped against the windowpane with force and she could only smile as she listened to it. The sound of rain was beautiful, wasn't it? It had such a relaxing ability and if Ainsley hadn't been tired enough, she managed to fall back asleep as she listened to the sound of it hitting the window. It was a peaceful sleep and it seemed to allow Ainsley's body to produce a bit more energy from it until she managed to wake up promptly around 8:30, feeling much more awake than she had previously. She was much more hungry though too, her stomach growling as she sat up off her bed. Normally eating when it was raining wouldn't be very difficult when there was a kitchen in your house, but the only place Ainsley could get food was outside of the cabin and down the long path to the Mess Hall.
Most of the child who braved the weather were forced to find whatever they could to cover themselves from the downpour, but not Ainsley. She had come prepared with an umbrella and after retrieving it she stepped outside with it, opening it up and covering herself as she made her way to the Mess Hall. Who would have guessed that an umbrella that you brought to protect yourself from the sun would have such a handy double use? Ainsley certainly had thought it would rain at camp when she packed it, and that's exactly why she packed it!
She wasn't completely dry when she go to the Mess Hall, but what could you do? She was certainly dry when you compared her to all of children sulking inside about the activities that were canceled, and the fact that they were soaking wet. She kicked her feet off on the step before she went inside and found herself finally giving in to the pancakes on the menu, but only because today there was actually strawberry sauce to put on them and that was the final temptation. Oh, how the child loved strawberries. That was healthy after all, right?
It seemed like a lot of the children, after getting to the Mess Hall, decided they'd rather not go back out in the rain and instead worked on crafts. Ainsley didn't want to be coped up all day though and using her umbrella to keep her protected from the assault from the sky, she went outside and headed straight back to her cabin. Lissy wasn't there when she got back, and Ainsley managed to pass most of the morning by in the cabin by braiding hair. It wasn't enough to keep her occupied the entire day though and by the time she finished lunch she wasn't ready to go back to the cabin to be coped up the rest of the day. Instead, she used her umbrella and went for a walk. It was so peaceful out, listening to nothing but the sound of the rain bouncing off the top of her umbrella.
She spent the most time by the lake, watching the rain patter off the top of the surface. She thought about her mother and her father, wondering how they were doing. Did they miss her like she missed them? Had they gotten her e-mail with her grades? Were they happy with it? Would they reply to her e-mail this time? Would she see them soon? Maybe they would reply to her e-mail, ecstatic about her grades and offering to let her come home! She hoped she would be able to see them soon. Although she missed them, she was even missing Bell and Xavier back in Destiny City. She'd taken Cora with her so Bell might be lonely! Ainsley hadn't thought about it when she'd taken Cora with her but now that she and Cora was gone, was Bell alone? Xavier would take good care of her, right? She knew he would, he always took good care of her! He wouldn't let her get lonely.
There was a small sigh escaping from the child's mouth, and a slow spin on her heel as she danced under the rain. What about Senri? She was beginning to miss the fact she couldn't just go sneak up on him and visit! Did he miss her? She hoped he did, but at the same time she hoped he didn't miss her too badly! She didn't want him to be all sad about it. Maybe she would make everyone something in arts and crafts while she was here. Yes, that seemed to be a good idea and that's exactly what she did. She went back to the Mess Hall and joined in on the activities for the rest of the afternoon, trying to make something everyone. She continued to do that until they began to serve dinner, and after dinner she went back to the cabin.
It was still raining and the sky was so dark. All the usual evening activities were canceled and instead Ainsley got comfy on one of the beanbag chairs and read more of her Redwall book. She was so close to the end of the book, the excitement of finding out how the story would end was building. There was a bit of sadness that lingered with the idea that the story would end, but Ainsley knew she had the next volume of the series with her in her bag. She was off in her own world for the entire evening and into the night until she finally finished the book before crawling into bed and falling asleep.
It was a peaceful night as the patter of rain fell onto the roof and windows. There were no creepers this night and the the child woke up really early, something she hadn't managed to do since the first night at camp. She did her morning rounds, including getting dressed and setting out food for Cora. She looked for Cora, looking to give her feline companion some early morning loving, but she couldn't find Cora anywhere. How strange, maybe even stranger than the fact the child could have done jumping jacks with all the energy she had. Who knew a day of rain could be so beneficial?
